Hello world! - astoriatoday launches online news hub

by @astoriatoday at 07:40pm, 01/02/2019

Since starting from a small, province-wide regional news magazine in the early 50s, we've been moving from strength to strength - reaching the capital in the mid 70s, to getting a million-reader viewership, to expanding to other countries, far outside Astoria's borders. Our goal is to bring Astoria to the world, to people who may otherwise have not heard of it, and also to give people the latest and hottest news happening within Astoria.
Therefore, with all that said, welcome to the new-and-improved astoriatoday news thread!

Astoria’s tourism sector soared to new heights in 2018, budget presentation says

Footscray, ACT | by Jay Eason (@jeason) at 09:17pm, 02/02/2019

According to figures presented at a budget presentation at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Footscray on Friday, chiefly presented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Neil Gamble, 12.647 million tourists visited Astoria in 2018, spending about 5.89 billion pounds - with 1.6 billion pounds being spent within Footscray alone. These tourists also booked 793 million hotel stays last year, almost doubling the number of total hotel stays in 2017. However, despite these advantageous numbers, there are signs that tourism activity may decrease this year, with the slight slipping of new hotel constructions all over Astoria. But officially, the outlook seems to be quite positive, looking forward to seeing millions more tourists within 2019.

Weather warning: another round of snow hits Metro Footscray

Footscray, ACT | by Kent Myers (@kmyers) at 04:19pm, 15/02/2019

As signficant snowfall comes down across the central half of Astoria, many are wondering how bad this round will be. The snowfall also puts transit systems under pressure. With snow and freezing rain in the forecast, FTrains says that it's already taking steps to reduce the impact to riders.

The next winter wallop is heading for Central Province, with some areas at risk or freezing rain as well as snow. Another round of snowfall began over Metro Footscray this Thursday, just in time to turn the afternoon commute into a rather messy affair.

Image
Snow falling over the Sudbury residential area on February 14th

The Met Office is forecasting that much of Metro Footscray and parts of neighbouring provinces will see another 5-10 cm of fresh snowfall over the course of the day. City crews have shifted their focus to clearing secondary routes such as streets and hills, plowing snow and laying salt.

The city council says that hundreds of staff are working around the clock to clear the roads ahead of the next storm. Police have been urging drivers to make sure they have snow tyres, to clear the snow off their entire car before heading out, and to give the drivers in front of them extra room on the roads.

Major Footscray rail bridge hit by a truck for a third time this year - impressive

Footscray, ACT | by Rachel Watson (@rwatson) at 02:39pm, 21/02/2019

The Napier St rail bridge in Footscray has been hit by a truck for a whopping third time this year.

The collision happened about midday yesterday, affecting road and rail traffic. As a direct result of that, the bridge will now need to have to undergo a structural assessment.

Image
The scene just a few minutes after the accident, on February 20th

This is the seventy-ninth time that the bridge has been hit by a truck since 2011, and just last year, local transport authority FLTA splashed out more than $1.3m on an early warning and safety system. The bridge was struck seven times last year, an increase from five times in 2017.

Aberdeen, NP | by Catalina Henderson (@chenderson) at 03:49pm, 23/02/2019

Seventeen people have escaped injury after two hot air balloons landed next to a motorway and a backyard in Aberdeen's eastern suburbs this morning.

The Western Ambulance Service said one balloon was carrying nine people when it landed near the intersection of Tyrell Av / Thompson Hwy in Bakersfield about 8:00am.

At the same time, another balloon carrying eight people landed in MacKenzie Park in Abbotsford, with part of the balloon also falling into a neighbouring backyard.

Paramedics have assessed people who were on board the balloons, and have said that nobody was injured in either landing.

Parliament abolishes Capital Act after long delays

Footscray, ACT | by parliamentary correspondent Nicolás Rodriguez (@nrodriguez) at 11:21 am, 28/03/2019

Astoria’s parliament has passed into law the Capital Repeal bill on Wednesday evening,

The bill which, is meant to allow citizens access to interact and trade with people and governments from countries that use capital punishment has been the subject of a series of protests, especially from the media, and civil society groups.

They accused lawmakers of deliberately delaying the passage of the law because of their own selfish interests. On their part, the lawmakers have argued that the bill needed fine-tuning in areas, especially bordering on national security.

In March 2018, the Capital Repeal bill was placed before Parliament. The current passage means that it has taken a year to see the light of day. It will now await Prime Minister Robert Paisley to pass it.

According to a recent survey, Astorians largely believe that the passage of the bill into law will make their work easier, especially in the area of accessing other nations, and trading with them.

Correction

Footscray, ACT | by astoriatoday (@astoriatoday), 29/03/19

In our last article, we mentioned that the Capital Act was abolished by Parliament. Unfortunately, this statement has since been proven to be false by both Parliament & the Department of Justice.

The actual story was that the Capital Act had its scope of powers significantly removed: ie. it allowed Astoria to freely trade with people, and governments from nations that still use capital punishment.

However, the Act still blocks access by Astorians into entering nations that either: 1. recently continue to execute people, 2. are known for committing human rights abuses, and / or crimes against humanity, or 3. are considered a threat to the safety and security of Astoria.

We hereby apologise again for potentially misleading our readers.

Police hold off on pursuing stolen car driven on wrong side of the road north of Varemssum

Esterpine, WA | by Michael Robertson (@mrobertson)at 07:59pm, 14/04/2019

A young driver in a stolen vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road north of Varemssum, a southern suburb of Esterpine this afternoon.

Police confirmed they received a number of reports of a car driving dangerously in the College View, Thompson and Lyall areas early this afternoon, but they did not pursue, due to the nature of the driving.

A witness told astoriatoday that police first tried to deploy spikes to stop the driver between Thompson and Lyall, and that the car was driven into oncoming traffic at times.

Image

The car was later seen in Felton, and a police vehicle activated lights and sirens, but they wouldn't pull over, so police did not pursue them.

About 04.20pm, police managed to get in front of the car and deployed road spikes successfully.

The male driver was taken into custody, and will be referred to Youth Aid.

First look at pedestrian friendly 'SeaPath' connecting Houston's Harbour Bridge to North Shore

Houston, SA | by Casey Willingham (@cwillingham) at 08:10pm, 14/04/2019

Detailed artist impressions of the proposed 'SeaPath', connecting Houston's Harbour Bridge and Takalina on the North Shore have been released by the SA Land Transport Authority (SALTA).

The new pedestrian and cycle friendly path will hopefully ease some congestion in the notoriously busy traffic area.

LTA Director for Regional Relationships for the Upper North Island Steve Mutton is excited about the plans.

'SeaPath is a critical part of the walking and cycling network and a key project for the Transport Agency.

Image
Artist's impression of the SeaPath proposal

'We are meeting the federal government’s goals around providing people with a choice in the way they travel; and a way to get from A to B that contributes to their health and good environmental outcomes.

'When we spoke to communities about this project late last year, the clear message was ‘get on with it and build it’. We’re delighted that the Detailed Business Case has been approved and that detailed design and consenting can now get underway,' Mr Mutton said this evening.

CP town first in Astoria to accept Bitcoin for property tax

Innsmouth, CP | by Nick Walsh (@nwalsh) at 08:40am, 15/04/2019

Residents of Innsmouth, CP can now pay their tax using cryptocurrency, in a move that’s made the town the first municipality in the country that accepts Bitcoin.

The town entered a one-year pilot project this month, partnering with Coinberry Pay, a Footscray-based cryptocurrency company to process bitcoin payments for property taxes.

While a quiet lakeshore town of about 36,000 people may not seem like a hotbed of cutting-edge technology, it’s just another step forward for the Central town.

'We developed a bit of a reputation for not being afraid to try new things,' said Innsmouth mayor Lynn Hill.

Image
A bitcoin, as seen in this file photo

The town has previously partnered with ride-sharing company GoTaxi to create a tax-subsidised, on-demand transit system for the town, saving the town an estimated $8 million annually in transit costs.

The payment system developed for Innsmouth has the town not actually holding any of the currency, and as a result they don’t take on any of the risk of a constantly changing market.

While it’s unknown whether any of the town’s residents have taken advantage of the new system yet, it’s a move that has Astoria and the rest of the world watching.

Do you avoid swearing in public? 2 in 5 Astorians change the way they speak: poll

Footscray, ACT | by David Sexton (@dsexton) at 12:40pm, 15/04/2019

Two in five Astorians say they change the way they speak to avoid swearing in public, according to a new poll.

The National Research Centre asked people across the country about their speaking habits. Overall, 38 per cent of those surveyed said they always alter the way they speak in public, including 37 per cent of those in Southern Astoria.

Forty-eight per cent of respondents admitted to sometimes changing how they talk so as to not swear in front of certain people. Only 14 per cent said they never change their speech and aren’t concerned about using foul language.

Image
People arguing, as seen in a file photo

By comparison, just over half of Astorians said they use curse words “frequently or occasionally” when talking to friends, and 68 per cent of those polled reported hearing curse words at the same frequency from friends. A majority also said they heard swearing in conversations with strangers (55 per cent), relatives (53 per cent) and co-workers (52 per cent).

“There are some differences across the country when it comes to listening to co-workers swear,” NRC president Bill White said in a statement. “Southerners are the most likely to report hearing curse words in the workplace (52 per cent), while Westerners are at the bottom of this list (44 per cent).”

The results come after another NRC poll last month that found that swearing was the most commonly observed etiquette faux-pas, with a majority of those polled saying they’d witnessed someone use foul language in public in the month before taking the survey.

How WA is on track to have Astoria's most advanced weather forecasting system

Esterpine, WA | by Michael Jarratt (@mjarratt) at 02:02pm, 06/05/2019

Astorians are famously fond of talking about the weather. The topic serves as both a great unifier and obsession — particularly when a cold snap or wild storm strikes.

Even if you aren't a weather nerd, if you use your phone to check the forecast after a rumble of thunder or find yourself subject to endless talk about the chilly weekend ahead on TV and radio, all of the information is drawn from Astoria's extensive national network of over 75 weather radars.

Now, forecasting is about to enter a new era as the Met Office brings the next generation of tools online.

Image
Inside a Doppler radar ball, as depicted in this file photo last week.

'When you look at the coverage of radars across the south-west of WA we will have more radars in the south-west than other state's have in totality,' the Bureau's WA spokesperson Neil Bennett said.

The technology, which detects the intensity of rainfall within a 150-kilometre radius, can also help those on the land prepare for severe weather events.

Although the Met Office is a federal entity, the WA state government committed $23 million to speed up the upgrade of its own network.

'I guess there was a view in Western Astoria that we weren't getting the sort of investment that was really needed for our farming community so the state has stepped up,' State Agricultural Minister Kelly Prestwick said.

'We're very export focused so our farmers really do need to be able to be very cost effective - and having access to Doppler radar really does rein-in costs.'

ACG saves group of migrants
Aberdeen, EP | by Scott Edwards (@sedwards) at 12:16pm, 11/05/19

A group of 86 migrants was saved off Astoria after their boat was reported to be in distress.

The Astorian Coast Guard said its rescue vessel was dispatched to a location where the wooden boat was reported to be in trouble.

Mulkua flyover project set for another milestone as first massive beams arrive
Esterpine, WA | by Michael Kivod (@mkivod) at 11:07am, 12/05/19

The first 24 of 70 beams that will form the deck of the first flyover at the Mulkua junction project were unloaded at Esterpine Harbour, a short distance away from the project site, this weekend. The $70 million project will be finalised by end of 2020. Each concrete pre-stressed beam is 26 metres long, weighing 36 tons.

The other straight beams of this and other flyovers will be produced by the contractors in a temporary pre-stressed beams plant being set up within the project site. These two connected flyover structures will form the new direct link between Camden Rd and Byers Rd.

Image
An artist's impression of how the junction will look when finished by September next year

A third flyover structure will eventually be connected to the first structure as well, to link Byers Rd with Lucia Av, forming the tallest flyover in the province.

The project will see the end of traffic lights waiting times, and related congestion emissions, for over 100,000 road users who travel through this junction every day.

Last ten minutes of programme interrupted due to fire alarm evacuation
Footscray, ACT | by Helena Pritchard (@hpritchard) at 12:20pm, 14/05/19

The last 10 minutes of 7sharp failed to air tonight due to a fire alarm evacuation at ABC's Footscray CBD headquarters. An ABC spokesperson says around 7.20pm tonight, during 7sharp's second ad break, a fire alarm triggered the evacuation of the building.

'We advised ABC 1 viewers on screen about the interruption to our live studio programming, and in the meantime we aired a repeat of Astorian Living,' the spokesperson said. 'The safety of our people is our first priority in this situation. Fire and Emergency attended the scene and cleared us to return within about 15 minutes.'

7sharp's Katrina Marshall and Barry Wells with a fire truck outside ABC Footscray, after the programme is taken off air over a fire alarm.

It appears a kitchen appliance in a tea room overheated - it generated smoke, but there was no fire, the spokesperson said. 'At 7.30pm we returned to our scheduled programming on ABC 1, fittingly called Emergency Call. We'll review what happened so we can learn from it and take steps to avoid a repeat. We apologise to viewers for the interruption to their viewing.'

Two fire engines attended ABC headquarters, and staff waited outside until the all clear to return was given.

Astorians are 'drunk' on hot cross buns
Footscray, ACT | by Bryce Anderson (@banderson) at 05:50pm, 15/05/19

Once the video of a traffic officer taking a breathalyser test after eating hot cross buns hit social media , and the result of it registering a false reading, it wasn't long before Astorians started finding the humour.

A man in a traffic department uniform, identified only as Mr Williams, is seen blowing into a breath testing device in a video. His alcohol level is measured as zero.

Image
Some hot cross buns, as seen in this file photo yesterday.

He is then offered hot cross buns and after consuming just two bites of the spicy treats his breath is again tested. This time it registers an alcohol level of 0.21. In Astoria, a breath alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1 000ml, or a blood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml means that you are legally drunk. Once the news hit Astorians, the memes quickly followed.

Pilot lands plane on I-4 ramp near Maitland
Footscray, ACT | by Patrick Myers (@pmyers) at 03:28pm, 19/05/19

A pilot made an emergency landing on Friday afternoon on an Interstate 4 entry ramp in Maitland, damaging one car in the process, police said. The plane remained on the shoulder of the road on Saturday morning surrounded by crime tape and cones. Crews removed the plane's wings and loaded the plane onto a truck that same afternoon.

'I was 11 miles north of the airport, and I just ran out of fuel in one tank,' he said. The pilot landed the plane at about 05:30pm near the entry ramp from Kemp Dr to westbound I-4. 'Mayday, mayday! Going down!' Garcia said. The plane struck off a car's rearview mirror during the landing, but no one was injured.

Image

'On I-4, you think you've seen everything, but not planes,' one driver said. Police said that the Federal Aviation Administration will determine if the pilot will be penalised for the landing.

Avdor Council encourages 15km/h speed limit for e-scooters in busy areas
Avdor, CP | by Dylan Wetmarsh (@dwetmarsh) at 12:42pm, 20/05/19

The Avdor Council is asking e-scooter operators to make it impossible for their vehicles to go faster than 15km/h in busy areas. Avdor Transport chief executive Thomas Ellison said operators were being encouraged to introduce "slow-speed zones" via geofencing, which automatically reduces speeds in busy use areas.

The zones can only be encouraged but not enforced by the council, however, all three operators had agreed to them. 'We were heartened to see that each operator proposed geo-fencing in their applications. Slow-speed zones in high use areas make it safer for e-scooter users and pedestrians to share footpaths and for riders to use road and cycleways,' Ellison said.

Image

'Lowered speeds are also a reminder to scooter users that they are in an area where they must take extra care, always on the lookout for others,' he said. The council had taken on board feedback from disability groups, including the vision impaired, when recommending slow-speed zones, which include the precinct around the Blind Foundation centre in Attard.

There will be a maximum of 1875 scooters licenced to operate in the new trial, 175 more than in the first. The new trial begins on June 12, and runs until the end of October.

Green lung over I-7 to be completed in four years
Foorscray, ACT | by Michael Jarratt (@mjarratt) at 08:41pm, 21/05/19

A $20 million project that will see 13,000 square metres dedicated as a green area will be completed within three to four years, announced the Federal Highway Authority on Tuesday.

The project will see the roofing over of a stretch of the I-7, beginning from just after the St Venera tunnels and leading up to Square Barrier Rd. The second phase of the project will see the area from the tunnels to Blue Rock Rd also roofed over.

Preliminary studies into the project have been completed and development applications should be submitted by year's end.

'Once the project is completed, we will be joining the urban landscape and the residential area - which had been separated because of the I-7 project - together,' the FHA added.

Image

Noise pollution in the area is also set to decrease, he said. The FHA said that the project could also serve as a blueprint for other areas that required greenery

Local residents had welcomed the proposal when it was first announced, however, they warned that adding a roof over the I-7 would not in itself solve problems of excessive car use.

Foundations laid down for $6.2 million housing project in Balkal
Balkal, WA | by Nick Walsh (@nwalsh) at 06:50pm, 22/05/19

Foundations have been laid down for a 'massive' social housing project in Balkal, the Parliamentary Secretary for Housing Kerry Brown said. Brown was speaking at a site visit for the project, which will see 73 apartments being built in Bell St.

Over 80% of the apartments will have access to balconies, internal gardens or terraces, Brown said. Four hundred square metres of the 11,000 square metre project will be dedicated to open spaces.

Image

If authorities wanted to cut out the waiting list for social housing, it was clear that more housing stock was needed, he said. The problem of housing has been there for over 20 years, and almost 3,000 people had been on the waiting list when he took helm of the housing secretariat, Brown added.

Visiting the site on behalf of Projects Astoria, Tourism Minister Conrad Leith said that people had a right to decent housing and social mobility. 'These projects address specific needs, but are not permanent solutions,' Leith said.

Local man reprimanded for cleaning cars without a permit
Footscray, ACT | by Darryl Lynch (@dlynch) at 06:34pm, 23/05/19

A South Footscray man, who wished to remain anonymous, was issued a written warning earlier today after reportedly cleaning 6 parked cars down Wakefield Road in the city centre.

Witnesses claimed that the man was simply continuously washing each individual car parked on the street, before coming into confrontation with the owner of the 6th vehicle whom, according to the owner, 'did not want his car cleaned, thank you very much.'

Image

Police released a simple statement on social media stating that 'whilst there's nothing wrong with wanting to maintain cars in a tip-top shape, he should have at least asked the owners before acting.'

As the vehicles have not been shown to have suffered any damages. However the 'reverse-vandal' has been warned that further action without a permit or consent may result in detainment, and potentially even a fine.
