We came second in 1998, third (or 4th, depends on who you ask) in 2002 and 5th in 2009. Not winning isn't necessarily bad. You can pin that on not "muh political voting", you can pin that on the rule that allows the countries to sing in any language they please.

Also with the increase of countries actually trying now, one can argue that any time you get on the left side of the scoreboard, it's doing well.

I heard something really funny a few days back apparently according to someone the reason we keeping doing badly in Eurovision is because of Brexit.

Maybe it's contagious as we don't seem to do Brexit well either.

possible solution? leave the dancing to Theresa May and put her on a 40ft pole?

I still have faith in the UK. I know the BBC won't have ever quit it - it's cheap entertainment (very, very cheap) you know. What can the BBC put on television to perhaps beat Britain's Got Talent in the ratings (like it did last year?). I saw an article the other day about why other countries are good. The article mentioned that the UK was has the record for the most consecutive participations. Bless, that's what we have to resort to now for glory.

Participations to the festival as a whole, or participations on the Saturday?

I guess participations to the contest as a whole but since the UK hasn't ever missed a final, I guess it holds the record for the Saturday only show too.

I guess what I can say is, if your song is good enough, it should be able to win (or do well) regardless of how liked or disliked the nation is. You're going to have to ask mainland Europeans, but my guess is that 1. They don't really care about Brexit as much as we think and 2. The UK doesn't live up to the expectations of Europe's best music industry.

Anywho a peak of 7.7 million watched Eurovision in the UK and the BBC not only has to not worry about hosting next year, but the contest is as close as The Netherlands. All round good night for the bureaucrats at the top!

The beeb can be guilty of repeatedly falling into the same mental traps. Grasping at the same straws time and time again- 1. they want a celeb- wheel out an off the peg Engelburt and pack him off with a box standard song
- 2- go the x-factor route and pack them off with an off the peg x-factor type song
- 3 - variant of 2 - but written by some eurowizz.


My solution give Jools Holland the elimination show.
He goes around the best songwriters amongst his muso mates and others and ask them to knock up songs. They could then choose their own proteges, do it themselves(possibly with some mates) or whatever.

elton john and taupin's entered before so should be amenable - they've been known to knock up the odd good tune
elvis costello
paul weller
etc etc
before finishing off with Adele- who I wouldn't be surprised if she'd want to perform it herself as she couldn't give a monkeys about street cred.



It's a pity that over the past few years we might have had contributors such as Bowie and Amy Whitehouse.

What do you think NS? If nothing else else the show to pick our song should be worth seeing and if delivered Hootananny style would be fun party which we could be proud of.

your putting words in their mouths before they've even been asked. Never dismiss the power of a Jools Holland inspired by a bit of mischief making.

More likely with these stringent budgets they dont want the expense of hosting.
