What makes you think they can obtain any such knowledge of the intricate workings of politics? These people are just living their lives, and the affairs of nobles matter not to them. Not only that, but they have no easy way of obtaining information. Back in the feudal days, priests would make public speeches and that was the "news", other then that, they only have rumours and superstition to go off of. They act 'unthinking' because they are ignorant and incapable of being informed unless nobles wish it so. Your blaming them for a crime they are not in control of.
