Former Australian PM Bob Hawke passes away

Postby Turbofolkia » Thu May 16, 2019 3:13 am

Thought I'd start a thread on the death on Bob Hawke - Australia's third longest serving PM. Definitely one of the greatest PMs in Australian history. His passing is even more profound two days out from the election.

As the saying goes, any boss who sacks a worker for not turning up to work tomorrow is a bum! I'll be having a beer for Hawkie tonight.

R.I.P. from Northern Australian Colony

IF YOU THINK WE'RE FOUR DIMENSIONAL, YOU ARE MISTAKEN. THIS IS JUST AN OLD NAME, A PLACEHOLDER NAME. I WILL /STILLME YA IF YOU MAKE CRAPPY ANSWERS SO DEAL WITH IT VADIM
TETRADIMENSIONAL OVERWORLD isn't my IC name. This nation is pure unadulterated nostalgia, deal with it. Did you know that I wasted 400 million plus seconds of my life and you wasted more? Well, if I could go back to any age, I'd go back to the time when I was 11. Great times indeed. I'm an anti-communist, but I do love me some Soviet music.
Late childhood is the best part of childhood -- change my mind. People below 10 are in blissful ignorance so I'd rather avoid that. Blissful ignorance is not true happiness

Guinness book of records 1954 , 2.5 pints of beer in 11 seconds.

Surely his greatest achievement.

I'm pretty sure most non-Australians know him more for this than for his political achievements.

He had no problems sculling a beer well into his 80s. Absolute unit.

Quite saddened to hear about this. Hawke was one of the many Australian PM's I enjoyed learning and studying about (such as Menzies, Whitlam, Fraser, Keating, Howard, etc). He was definitely quite the charismatic leader, in my opinion. His beer sculling, wit, and even his white Australia shirt are something that is just a part of Bob Hawke. It is a shame to see him go. He will be sadly missed.

Love me a man who can get universal healthcare passed and drink like Andre the Giant.

Seriously, rest in peace, legend both on the political front and personality-wise.

BBC reported he gave up drinking in the 1980s, perhaps they just meant his 80s, period.

He was a teetotaller while he was Prime Minister, but stetted drinking again when he left office. He was also a regular cigar smoker. Amazing he lived to 89.
