NSW Drought Discussion

Postby Australian rePublic » Wed May 15, 2019 7:45 pm

So, NSW is currently experiencing one of its worst droughts in history. A town has already run out of water, and Sydney is expected to reach the 50% mark by August. Water restrictions will come into play if the dam falls to 50% or less. In my opinion, this is silly, there should always be water restrictions in play in Australia, except for times of flood. Whilst water restrictions are good short term solution, Australia needs a long term solution (fix climate change- too long term, we need something now). My idea would be to transport water across the country, in fact, I have created a petition to do so here: https://www.change.org/p/the-australian ... -australia

Anyways, farmers are also suffering from lack of water. This is where charities like Buy a Bale come into play. I would support such charities if I could afford to do so, but sadly, I cant. With no sign of rain any time soon, I fear that the drought will worsen. Let's all prey for rain!

Australia needs more desalination plants. I know they have 30 or so but they obviously need more.

Nuclear desalination

Zombie Ike/Teddy Roosevelt 2020.

Novus America represents my vision of an awesome Atompunk near future United States of America expanded to the entire North American continent, Guyana and the Philippines. The population would be around 700 million.
Think something like prewar Fallout, minus the bad stuff.

Politically I am an independent. I support what is good for the country, which means I cannot support either party.

Our population is less than 25 million, and most droughts occur inland

Your population lives in the most arid continent in the world. The water can be moved inland.

Which goes back to my original petition. Unfortunately, that won't happen, as our politicians won't ever do it. Unless you sign the petition, that is. The pollies are attracted to petitions, kind of how birds are attracted to shiny things

I thought the most arid land would be the middle east, the sahara, or Pakistan in August.

I'm an American, I'm not sure me signing a petition is either effective or right. I wouldn't want you petitioning my officials, after all.

But yes, action needs to be taken. Unfortunately, politicians are feet-draggers.

Don't the Mojave Desert in the Southwestern United States during the summer or the Atacama desert in Chile

Move everyone to the coast, build desalination plants, invest on improving cloud seeding and other ameliorative tech, plan for the ridiculously long term with regards to climate change, urge your neighbors to the north (namely that otherwise useless ASEAN) to wise up and band up for a concerted response with regards to climate change, because dammit, this will keep on keeping on.

Record-breaking droughts and storms are going to be the norm moving forward; better face that shit with more people.

You would think with have two warm oceans on your eastern and western coasts, y'all would have a decent amount of rain.

Up until about autumn 2017, it used to piss down frequently in Sydney, FREQUENTLY. The it just, myteriously, stopped

You'd think that, but you'd be wrong these past few years. But at least you'd kinda expect Australia to be drier -- elsewhere's gotten hotter too --

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!
