Still it made for bad optics. But I was not talking about Lusitania, she was not an American ship.
Just because something might be legally justified does not necessarily make it a good idea.
The tiny advantage Germany gained by sinking her was outweighed by the massive diplomatic cost.
But she did not cause the US entry. It was the sinking of 5 American ships in March 1917 that caused it.
The Zimmerman telegram was just unforgivably stupid. Especially when Zimmerman admitted to sending it. And the Germans should have realized the Mexican Government was not stupid enough to go for it before sending it in the first place.

If they're too dumb to know things about cows, they're probably not smart enough to remember to vote often enough for it to be a problem the other 80% and 93% are doing most of the deciding
