First woman to become leader of your nation

Postby Kavaliers » Wed May 08, 2019 2:29 pm

Describe your nation's first female leader(s).
- Who was she?
- How did she become leader?
- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history?
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders?
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader?
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?).

Kavaliers is a monarchy; the oldest child is the first in line to the throne. Traditionally, only men were eligible for the throne, so if the king's oldest child was a daughter, the heir would be the second, third etc. child. If the king had no male heirs, his oldest brother would become king, then his next oldest brother etc, then his grandchildren.
Later (about 100 years ago) the order of succession was changed, allowing women to become the monarch. A male preference was retained though, so the king's daughter would only become queen if the king had no sons. A few decades later, the male preference was abolished, so the first heir to the monarchy was the king/queen's first child, regardless of gender.
The first two kings after this law was changed, Nigel VI and LeBron VIII, both had no female children, so there were no real opportunities for a female monarch. However, the oldest child of LeBron VIII's son (and successor), Kyrie II, was a daughter named Anna-Lucia (pronounced looseeuh). When Kyrie II shockingly resigned just five months into his reign, his eldest child, 28-year-old daughter Anna-Lucia became the nation's first ever queen. It was relatively uncontroversial, as the nation's culture is one of the most egalitarian with respect to gender.

Being a constitutional monarchy where the king/queen has very little real power, Kavaliers also has a head of government known as the Governor, who is elected by popular vote. There has never been any law requiring that the governor be male, but traditionally many Kavaliersmen (and even women) doubted the effectiveness of a woman governor, or even whether it was morally right.
The first female governor was Malison Lawley, who was elected in 1975 by a relatively wide margin. By then, women and men were mostly equal in Kavalierian society, but a few people still had traditional beliefs and/or lingering reservations about women leaders. Although Lawley was a very popular candidate based on her political positions, there was speculation before the election that her gender would hurt her in the election. In the end, she comfortably prevailed over her unpopular opponent, Theodosius Neumann, who was a very traditionalist conservative. Since then, negative attitudes towards female leaders have almost entirely disappeared - almost 40% of the country's government is made up of women - and several other women have since been elected governor, most recently the nation's current governor Silence Gaeta.

Our current Prime Minister, Johanne Kjeldsen, was the first woman to enter into a number of roles, including:
  • First Female Labour Party Leader;
  • First Female Shadow Secretary of Justice;
  • First Female MP in the legal profession
And most importantly;

  • First Female Prime Minister

She started her political career in 1990 as a city councillor, entering parliament in 1994. While Akrafjall is a very progressive and inclusive nation, Johanne experienced some gender discrimination when she started working in a law firm in 1985, so when she entered politics she was ready. She has worked extremely hard as an MP, losing her seat for only one term, and gaining it back straight after. She is seen as a ambitious and hard-working woman, even receiving a Award of Excellence from the Akrafjall Woman's Society. Johanne's election as Prime Minister was a milestone for equality in politics, which was a predominantly male profession, much like her legal work.

In terms of the modern Democratic Republic, the first woman to be our nation's leader was Alexis Johnson, who served as Prime Minister from 1958 until 1964 as a member of the Gandoor Communist Party. In addition to being our first female Prime Minister, she was also the first female leader of the Communist Party (being elected to the position in 1953), the first Prime Minister born after the Gandoor Revolution of 1900-1902 (being born in 1911), the first Prime Minister born in the 20th century, the first Prime Minister to serve under the limitations of the Third Amendment to the Constitution of Gandoor (which limits Prime Ministers to only two terms of six years, if they otherwise maintain the confidence of the Forum), and she had the longest post-Prime Ministership of any of our nation's leaders, living for another 40 years after leaving the office until she passed away in 2004 at the age of 92.

In terms of the overall history of Gandoor, the first woman to rule over our nation was Nzarina Rebecca I, who was our nation's sixth monarch. Rebecca I reigned from 14 February 1741 until 19 September 1817, a total of 76 years, making her the longest-reigning monarch in Gandoorese history. (For comparison, the second longest-reigning monarch, Frederick I, only reigned a total of 38 years from 1648 until 1686) During Rebecca I's reign: she replaced the non-decimal Gandoorese pound with the decimal gdyn in 1779, which remains Gandoor's currency to this day, and abolished slavery in 1783, freeing the estimated 11,000 people held in bondage at that time.

- Who was she? Galeria Divi Filia Augustus Dominica
- How did she become leader? After proving to be a masterful commander and orator in the Senate, she was selected as heir by the preceding Praesidis, Julius Jefferson Divi Filus Augustus Dominicus.
- Was it a significant milestone, or has your nation had female leaders all throughout its history? While she is the first female leader, she is the the nation's third Praesidis so there hasn't been a history of exclusively male leaders.
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders? It did prior to the establishment of Americanism.
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader? No
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?). Galeria grew up in a rural Christian community that espoused traditional values regarding the place of women in society. However, she left at the age of 17, joined the military, and converted to Americanism which placed women as equals to men.

Prime Minister Iseabeil Doherty

It was just like any other election
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders?
No
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader?
No
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?).
Not internally, but we were criticised by certain nations for electing her because they did not believe we had a "legitimate" leader.
The North Sea People's Republic, colloquially known as Northaria, established in 1421 A.D. (current constitution: 2022).
A multiethnic Northern European nation with strong democratic and anti-feudal traditions, now building socialism.
We use NS stats, with the exception of tax rates and the related stats. The Northarian population is roughly 88.5 million as of last census.
Member of the Atlantic Defence Agreement and the Arctic Council, current president of the Western European Union.
I reject anything and everything political that I posted on here prior to 2019. She/her, please, I am not a guy.

She is still Minister of Education as well.

- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history?
Female leaders have always been common.

Excluding our Queen, since she is an artificial intelligence that was specifically programmed and designed to serve as our head of state, the first female leader of Aikoland was Zhao Lan.

Zhao was our second Prime Minister who served from 2002 until 2009 under the 2nd Parliament. In addition to being the first female Prime Minister, she was also the first Taiwanese Prime Minister. Zhao was born on 13 April 1956 in Taipei, Republic of Taiwan and died on 6 October 2043 in Taipei, Taiwan, Aikoland at the age of 87.

- Who was she? Sarah Vale
- How did she become leader? Like every other leader, she was chosen by the Assembly of the Allied States
- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history? It was a significant milestone.
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders? No.
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader? No.
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? There have been accusations of her being a lesbian, which emboldened her opponents during her term.

Her name was Khalifahtul Najwa Ahmad Al-Mufakir or Calipha Najwa the Thinker. She was the first and only female caliph throughout the history of Khalifah Nawwariyah, reigning from 1905 until 1920. Even though being the eldest sibling, her younger brother, Khalifahtul Wasiq Ahmad Al-Hajj Syuhada succeed the throne in 1900 after their father demise from illness. However, his reign was short-lived an in 1905, he along his crew died during the pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca. Without suitable suitor for the throne, Calipha Najwa succeed the throne.

It was not consider normal during the time - and even considered a bad omen - as women were expected to excel in house-work duties instead of ruling an entire caliphate. Because of this, she received backlash from her own court, especially those from the Hassan Dynasty. Though, she was loved by her people. Unlike her predecessors, she was delicate and kind to her people. So often, she brought people in into her throne room where she hear people complaints and dissatisfaction. Even though she did not had the support of her own court, at least, she had the support of her people, further solidifying her position as a leader.

The event of Calipha Najwa succeeding the throne is an important event that shaped the nation as a whole. Throughout her reign, she made efforts to bring women, the lower-classes, and even the disabled to education believing that everyone have rights to it. She even taking the time to teach them about it. She also repealed a law which forbid women from continuing to higher education, a law which forbid women from succeeding as representatives, governors or leaders as well as repealing the law which forbid women from pursuing a career as an educator. Her efforts carved the path for feminism in Qasheer.

Apart from giving more freedom to women, she also had united the people of Khalifah Nawwariyah. During her reign, the Khalifah Nawwariyah was broken. Broken into Muslims and Christians who not only hated each other, but the hatred they had caused mass suicide from both groups. By enforcing law which protects both Muslims and non-Muslims rights, giving speech about the awareness of unity among the people, as well as removing political figures that pose a threat against her efforts, alas she had ended the long feud between them.

Calipha Najwa was promising, having potential, and unique. But her reign only lasted for 15 years. On the late of April, 1925, she fell sick. Making the most time she had, she made a will which told the court to give the throne to her nephew, Jamalludin Thadhari, as she deemed him to be most brilliant and wise. But the problem was the one who was rightful to the throne was Ahmad Bahrin Salam. The court did not consider her will. After four months suffering the illness, she met her demise in early of August, and Khalifatul Ahmad Bahrin Ar-Ghabi succeed the throne.

Khalifatul Ahmad Bahrin Ar-Ghabi was oblivious and an idiot. He, not only demolished Calipha Najwa's effort in bringing the Khalifah Nawwariyah a better place, he also demolished the efforts of her predecessor. Insecure about people's thoughts about him, he openly support the Islamiyah Komunitas Parti, a branch of the Democratic Movement, which were responsible to the 1931 Monarch Massacre, killing 109 people including himself from the Royal Bloods.

Describe your nation's first female leader(s).
First recorded female monarch
- Who was she? Queen Nakhta I de Renaud
- How did she become leader? Vullish succession has almost always been based on agnatic-cognatic primogeniture. However, this was purely theory until, in 1559, King Gattrem IV, his queen, and his four eldest children perished in a storm at sea while traveling abroad, leaving only the youngest child, Nakhta (just 19 at the time) to inherit the throne. Though many at the time were suspicious of her, no evidence was ever found that this was anything but a natural disaster, and Nakhta herself seemed devastated.
- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history? There were many at the time opposed to a female monarch, citing the lack of experience of war, the difficulty of finding a matrilineal marriage, and the perceived tendency of women (Vixens in particular) to scheme and plot. To be fair, this was true of Nakhta, but to be doubly fair, her attention to her father's court did prepare her for the task of juggling many factors at once, and it was she who established the ancestors of the SIS (OI-4) which were to prove so useful in modern wars.
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders? Aside from general sexism, there is no real reason that a woman cannot lead politically, though of course she is forbidden from full membership in the clergy of the Anoch religion.
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader? No formal laws existed beforehand, as it was merely considered highly unlikely, and there were none who would have dared to suggest such during or after the momentous era of the first Nakhta.
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? Nakhta did indeed face all of the above privileges and more, not to mention snide suggestions about who was really pulling the strings, given the nobility which, while in slight decline, was still very powerful at the time. She managed to put those to rest, despite a few small skirmishes between private armies who felt themselves more fit to lead, which took place largely off of Vullish soil proper.

First female Prime Minister
-Name Eleanor Hemsworth
-Species Robin
-Elected 1979

Eleanor Hemsworth remains a controversial figure, given her three consecutive terms and the divisiveness of her farther-than-usual right-wing policies. Still, it is a commonly held truism among modern historians now that a great part of the difficulty she faced stemmed from her being both a woman and an Avian. There were those who, mockingly, called her flighty and even went so far as to suggest that she would be puppeteered by the dominant male leaders of the continent. She silenced the detractors by an indomitable will, however.

The first female President of the Federation:

Who was she?
Henriette Rostrup.

How did she become leader?
Like all Presidents ever since the founding of the Federation in 1981: chosen and appointed by the Meritocratic Council. She only had a short presidency, though, from 1987 to 1989.

Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history?
Female leaders, especially monarchs, were normal most of the time in the Federation's predecessor states.

Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders?
No.

Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader?
No.

Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?).
Not really, mostly due to female leaders having been considered normal most of the time.
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Describe your nation's first female leader(s).
- Who was she? Waleska Serrano Vieira
- How did she become leader? Elected by the population in the 2004 General Elections.
- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history? She was already the first female governor of the state of Corola, longtime considered as a springboard for national politics, though not the first female governor––that honor goes to Millie Van der Heusen, of the state of Suárez del Norte (1956-1960). Serrano was, however, the first female political leader to successfully run a bid for president. She was also the first Pentecostal president, which galvanized evangelical feminists in Achaean politics.
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders?
Machismo unfortunately played a part in the development of the Serrano government, more so at the height of many progressive social issues (same-sex marriage, abortion, sex education) that were being discussed at the time.
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader?
Yes, albeit not explicitly; in 1912, rules preventing minorities from being elected in government were struck down as racist and discriminatory, but participation on these fronts was lacking for several decades afterward.
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?).
Besides machismo, Serrano had to tackle the unfortunate growth and visibility of femicides and gender violence, as well as the burgeoning drug trade and worsening security in the country and contention with the religious right over social issues. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer on February 2006, and died on March 11, 2017, leaving her husband Josué Uribe Frías to become president in a very controversial move that detractors insist was reminiscent of a coup d'etat.

- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? - Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history? She became the first ever women to become ruler of Saint Arsenio/to replace the King

- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?) Yes. Queen Jane Glennwood wasn't seen as a Monarch by some of the Older Citizens of Saint Arsenio, but rather a "substitute" because of her brother's death. Some of the Royal Family staff even resigned as a result of Queen Jane's rise to the throne, because some of them believed that only a Male could hold the title of Monarch in Saint Arsenio.

- Who was she? Madelyn Kaczmarek
- How did she become leader? Elected under the Democratic Party, a cherry on top of a huge Right-wing surge in the Islands.
- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history? No, not really.
- Does (or did) your nation's culture have any taboos against female leaders? No.
- Has your nation ever had laws preventing women from becoming leader? No.
- Did your first female leader face additional obstacles because of her gender alone? (e.g. laws giving preference to male heirs if your nation is a monarchy, cultural beliefs that women don't belong in leadership roles, or just plain old discrimination?). No, she was a terrible leader who supported an increase of taxes against her party's manifesto and was responsible fot stagnation of the San Carlos economy. This cannot be attributed to gender as she was replaced by a new female president from the Nazbol party recently who seems to already be doing a much better job in power.

Describe your nation's first female leader(s).

- Who was she? Erma Pendrake

- How did she become leader? She was the leader of a revolutionary army that successfully overthrew the government of the time.

- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history? The nation has history of female monarchs being in power. During the period of "democracy" about 60% of leaders were female.

No (in Miilaria men actually aren't allowed to be monarch.)

Current Executive Secritary Édorie Montclair is the first female leader in Mayolagne, she was also the third Leader of the Opposition, and the 31st female in a cabinet position. She served as Secritary of Culture and Historical Preservation from 2009 to 20012, and as Chief Ambassadorial Delegate from 2012 to 2015 in the Faurcou Government. She was delegated to a Shadow Minister after the Faurcou coalition broke down. After Faurcou stepped down from coalitional leadership Édorie ran in the Leadership Election. She faced off against Marc Zargoskin the former Secritary of Defense. She eventually won after 17 different votes. In May of 2017 the Green Party and Social Union Movement left the the governing coalition of Maxwell Gaëtan. President Shcherbina called for early election.

Montclair's Democratic Union Party came out as the largest party by vote share with nearly 21% of the vote. She then formed a coalition with the People's Party (Conservative and Protectionist.), New Democracy (Technocracy, E-Democracy), Free Liberal Alliance (liberalism, Russophone minority intrests), Social Union Party (Christian democracy, trade unionism), and the Blue Green Alliance (Eco-Capitalism) into a governing coalition. She was sworn in as Executive Secritary on the 4th of October 2017.

- Who was she?
The first formal leader of Iciaros was Empress Illyria.

- How did she become leader?
She took the title of Empress over 600 years ago after unifying the disparate tribes left in the wake of the destruction of Iciaros' preceding nation, founding the current iteration of Iciaros.

- Was it a significant milestone at the time, or were female leaders considered normal throughout your nation's entire history?
Founding a nation was a pretty significant milestone, but her gender wasn't a part of it. The majority of Iciaros' sovereigns through the ages have been female.

Nope.
