Hip Hop/R&B Music Discussion Thread

Postby Augustan America » Wed May 08, 2019 2:11 pm

Surprised there wasn't already a thread for hip hop discussion on this forum, but also not really surprised at the same time given the demographic of this site tends to lean much more heavily to metal and rock listeners. Hopefully there are other hip hop heads out here on A&E.

This thread is dedicated to discussing anything related to the music genres of hip hop and R&B of all kinds, whether it be Grandmaster Flash, 21 Savage, Cardi B, Rage Against the Machine, or Frank Ocean; all discussion falling under the broad umbrella of the aforementioned genres are welcomed here.

Only rules are no trolling, flaming, or any form of toxic behavior. Additionally, try to avoid too much off topic discussion.

I like some hip hop!

Most notably A Tribe Called Quest, who are one of my top five artists of all time, and Kendrick Lamar - who released one of the masterpieces of this decade in TPAB. If RATM even counts, they're also one of my favorites.

With those two as exceptions (amongst a few others like Deltron 3030 and Digable Planets), I have a hard time getting into entire hip hop albums and tend to just have a few individual songs I really dig by various artists. Generally I like the more artistic styles with tags such as "conscious", "alternative" or "jazzy" rap. That said, I don't enjoy the super experimental styles of, say, Death Grips.

Chance the Rapper's Coloring Book brought me back to God. I'm going to love that man forever and I can't wait for his first album.

Yeah I felt that. I like some Death Grips songs but I really can't get into them, its just not for me. If you like alt and jazzy rap I def recommend you listen to Tyler the Creator, especially his stuff from Cherry Bomb, Wolf, and Flower Boy. MF Doom, Chance the Rapper, Injury Reserve, and Late Registration by Kanye also fall into those categories.

I absolutely adore the oddity of the new Flying Lotus single, and it's easily my most anticipated album of the year so far.
Slowthai's debut Nothing Great About Britain comes out this week, which also seems promising.

I listened to some of his singles after hearing "Ultralight Beam," but was disappointed that it didn't share the same energy. Ought I give Coloring Book a listen? I did enjoy at least one of the songs.

There's some great "jazzy" stuff coming out of the U.K. at the moment.

Watched Samurai Champloo years ago, and recently felt the urge to listen to the theme tune again. Which has led me to listening to a lot of Nujabes' music lately.

Igor by Tyler the Creator and Injury Reserve's self titled debut studio album both dropped today. What are your thoughts on them? Personally I really enjoyed both, though I was disappointed by Frank Ocean's lackluster feature on Running Out of Time, I was hoping he'd have an actual verse like he did in his 2018 features in Astroworld and Testing.

Also dropping today was DJ Khaled's Father of Asahd, Duckwrth's THE FALLING MAN, Wu-Tang Clan's Of Mics and Men, and Slowthai's Nothing Great About Britain, though I haven't got the chance to listen to these yet.

Nothing listed is interesting in the slightest, but I'm following Logic pretty closely. He's one of the best of this era.

So, does anyone here like Necro, Ill Bill, The Weathermen, MHz or similar?

MF DOOM is always a good choice. Don't forget his other work, like Madvillany, DOOMSTARKS, etc.
