Their influence dissipated once independence was achieved. Ireland is free from control by the very socialists who fought for it.

What cultural differences? The vast majority of Irish people speak English, Northern Ireland is filled with ethnic Anglo-Scots, many of the famous Irish nationalists were Anglo-Irish (W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, etc.) southern Ireland certainly has a right to independence, but the idea that there is some sort of cultural war between the two countries is stupid and one reason nobody likes Plastic Paddies. Because believe it or not, Irish Catholics aren't revanchists waiting for the day they can goosestep into Ulster.
