EPISODE ONE - WELCOME TO THE SHOW

September 27th, 2021

They said there was no rest for the wicked. But much of the time, it also seemed like there was no rest for the people who did something to stop them. The local authorities, the ones on the frontlines with the Guild, fighting demons or vampires or Xenofront or whoever. It seemed like every week there was another anti Xenofront operation, or some investigation into another group like the Black Circle, or some attempt at diplomacy to keep some mage house from stepping out of line, or even simpler things like having to come down to the suburbs and deal with reports that there was a vampire in the area feeding on the locals.

None of it was overwhelming on its own. When all of it was combined into a series of events that was constant and consistent, however, it could be crushing.

“There’s a lot of bodies stacking up in this case,” remarked Caine Rayden, one of the main field instructors at Mittlerstadt Academy, while looking over the report that had just been handed to him from across the desk by Radovan Belyokov. “Which is a bad thing for multiple reasons… Both because of the losses and because it’s going to end up in the news. In the other world outside of our own.”

“Yes, they are stacking up. And too fast, on both sides. Even doing damage to the enemy contributes to what you just said, with things spreading into the regular world. But, Cell Five is one of the oldest Xenofront cells to date, it’s not surprising that they’ve proven to be a menace when it comes to taking them out,” Belyokov replied, with a shrug, while Rayden went over the report.

“Right. They’ve only gotten better with time, and all that. Every time we go to war with them, we give them what they want and make things more public…”

Rayden’s voice trailed off as he stretched and set the papers down before looking back to the man across the desk. “Why are you showing the report to me? Am I getting sent off to deal with this or something, or do I get to kick back and relax a bit more before getting back on the road?” he asked, genuine curiosity in his voice.

“Just showing you what we’re dealing with on the outside since,” started Radovan, gesturing towards the map that had been printed out along with the report. “This is all happening too close to home and Divisions One and Two are going to get pulled into things for sure if this escalates anymore. Central Europe is our backyard. That doesn’t just go for the Academy, but for the Division that’s based not far to the south and for the Guild in general around here. Things go hot with Xenofront and we can expect this-”

Radovan gestured to the general area around them. “To become the frontline. The Guild knows that, too. I actually received a directive from the Board of Mages this morning and that’s why you’re here. Because you and Nico are going to be a part of what they want, even if what they want might not be the safest option per say.”

Nico Lucius, who was leaning against the wall in the background and mostly saying nothing, finally spoke up. “What, are you having us rush out a bunch of recruits because Division Two needs more bodies to send into the grinder?” she asked, more cynical than her more successful colleague.

“Not quite, and I wouldn’t put it so pessimistically. We’re not rushing out a class but we have been told to get them ready earlier. Things aren’t going to go slow for them just because it’s their freshman year. And for the ones already in the ranks of this academy, they’ll be pushed more. But I believe you two have been assigned to deal with the freshman, and so, I’ve brought you here to tell you about the order. Which you can read the paperwork for here-”

“Don’t need to read it. I know I’m not rushing out a bunch of initiates to send them into the fight against Xenofront. I of all people would know what they can do, and a bunch of newbies aren’t going to be ready to deal with one of their more… Aggressive cells. Some of the vets are having a hard time handling them after all, I believe the first report you printed out was a matter of that.”

The report had, of course, been about a failed operation against Xenofront, where little had been gained despite the high cost of the operation, with a few Guild agents dying during the failure and much property being damaged or destroyed. Sometimes, that was just the way life went. Especially when dealing with species who were stronger than humans in most areas. These weren’t the random vampires or demons the Guild was sometimes called out for. They were a lot more organized, and that helped cut the advantage the Guild had on them.

Depending on how you looked at it, you could say the Guild hardly had an advantage at all.

“We’re not moving the class ahead or throwing them into the meat grinder. I’m just saying that we can’t afford to go easy on them because this class is going to have, ahem, higher expectations than the ones in the past did,” Radovan replied. “And based on manpower, they might end up being involved in more things sooner than their predecessors did. I want you both to start off right away with intermediate training and assume they know the bare basics. They should, if they made it in here in the first place. Get them involved. If they can succeed in the more active training, I’m sure they’ll do better when they get involved for real with things in the field eventually.”

“You don’t have to tell me that, I don’t go easy in the first place,” said Rayden, nodding. “Let’s just hope that we’re able to keep the intensity of things down to, well, training and not have the fight come here. I’m sure this place looks like a nice big target for Xenofront to make a statement, and I know they’re not the fondest of demons and angels and vampires that end up in these ranks.”

“We can’t control whether they try to make that statement or not,” Radovan sighed. “All we can do is get the students ready for when they have to face that enemy for themselves. It’s not really a question of if. It’s a question of when and whether or not we can beat them when they come.”

The actual students themselves wouldn’t know anything about whether or not they were being pushed. All they knew was that this was one of the biggest days of their lives. The day when they were moving into the place they’d call home for the next four years. Well, some of them would spend all of the time there, anyway. The ones who were competent enough might get out early and end up promoted directly into the Guild. But this wasn’t the time to think that far ahead, they had to perform competently first and before they could do that, they had to get settled into their new place.

Just about everyone had been brought into Germany and had spent the last night or so in a hotel where they would have their first chance to meet each other, but because of their late night arrival, most of them wouldn’t have talked very much and met the entire cast of other mages and spirits. That would come during the introduction. There were a couple of buses pulling up on the outside, and when they stopped, the students were now at the gates of the academy that would shape them into mages that would have a shot at real and important careers.

Assuming they met the high standards of the place and succeeded both in the classroom and in the more active and physical training.

There was already someone waiting for them when they stepped off the bus and in front of the gate, which was a large arch in front of the main footpath through the campus, connected to the metal fence which went around the entire perimeter. It was quite large, but well, the Guild had spared no expense on this campus. And the one that was waiting for them was distinctive in appearance, too. Female, but not human. Blue skin, green eyes, and four horns on her head. Not a demon, most likely, but one of the spirits around here.

“Ah, there you are,” she said, gesturing towards the gate after noticing the students. “I’m sure you won’t recognize me, I’m not that famous. My name is Endriel and I’m the spirit that works with the Dean around here. I’ve been assigned as the Manager of Spirit Personnel, which basically means that I’m responsible for keeping you spirits from burning the place down or doing anything too illegal while your masters are studying, training in the field, or doing other things. I’m also the one that decides the training schedules for the spirits here.”

“But,” she continued, looking back to the students as she stepped through the gate. “I’ve also been sent down here to pick up the new students and explain where everything is. The apartments that you’re going to live in for the next years are located on the northeast side of the campus, and while we could have driven there, the Dean thought it would be a better idea to let you see this place a bit more by walking. The walk across the campus is also a decent chance to get introduced to your fellow mages and spirits, who you may not have had the chance to meet last night.”

Endriel paused and turned back to the group as she walked. “Just one quick word of advice about your time here. Get along, and learn to lean on each other. There’s enough damn problems around here if you just take a look outside. We don’t need any more coming from the inside.”

Ikki Arinaga, scion of the Great House of Japan!

The trip from the hotel to Mittelstadt was uneventful to the Ikki and Enrir pair, who had chosen to take the seats at the back of one of the buses. During the entire trip, Ikki's gaze remained fixated either on the passing scenery through the window in front of him, or the pages of the book in his hands, all while his Spirit couldn't stop chatting and trying to break its mage into a conversation. Enrir pointed out the clothes everyone was wearing, that quite a few of the spirits looked either abnormally cute or demonic, that a few of the passengers on the buses were clearly not either human nor spirit - but, aside for a few brief retorts, Ikki's well was completely dry.

This was, after all, a time of focus. The reasons why his father and the rest of House Arinaga opted to send him to Mittelstadt, instead of the many respected magical schools in Japan or even just hiring private tutors, were still not entirely clear to him, but now that he's here, he's got to show diligence and dedicate as much as he can to improve his skills to their highest possible point. And that means, as little of Enrir's nonsense as possible.

As soon as the bus pulled up to the gates of the Academy, Ikki closed his book and pushed it into his bag, pulling it over his left shoulder and stepping out alongside his Spirit, where he, as well as the rest of the fresh-faced students, were met with Endriel, the Manager of Spirit Personnel - which meant that Enrir immediately started listening to what she had to say while his mage only barely kept attention. At least until she explained that she was here to pick up the new students and show them where everything is, at which point Ikki hastened his pace to keep up with the Spirit.
I have a severe case of addiction to writing. At least 3k words every day is my fix.

Gabriella Sara Bianchi-Costa

She'd been to Mittelstadt before, once or twice. Maybe more. Family business, normally, given they had quite extensive ties in to the Mage's Guild. She'd never found the actual business that interesting, and normally she'd been dumped on some subordinate to keep entertained for the day. She didn't particularly like the bus either, it was just... Well, for someone quite used to being chauffeured everywhere, it was different.

She sat next to the window, near the front of the bus, but her attention was locked on the piece of paper in front of her, resting atop a closed briefcase as she drew lines across the paper. Infusing runes with magic was easy; drawing the runes correctly, leaning them, that was the hard part. She'd always found herself comparing it to the algebra or chemical formulae from her mundane education in terms of execution, but the most important thing was memorization. How each rune was formed in terms of brushstrokes, what they did, how they interacted with other runes... It was far more academic in nature than most other forms of magic, but she didn't mind that.

Less chance of killing or injuring herself trying to perfect new orders of runes than with more active techniques. Plus it meant she had something useful to practice during more quiet periods, like now.

And then they were finally there, the bus coming to a stop in front of the Academy's gates. She let out a small sigh, neatly folding up her rune-covered piece of paper and sliding it into her jacket pocket along with the pencil she'd been using to draw before shifting her briefcase that she carried all her rune-related equipment and notes in onto the floor of the bus so she could stand up before picking it up, making her way off the bus and emerging outside. She listened to Endriel in silence; most of it was stuff she could have inferred or found out by herself later. She followed at an almost relaxed pace as the Spirit walked, occasionally turning her head one direction or another if she spotted something she recognised from her previous trips or it just stood out to her.

Lucas Deccan & Adrial Elysium | Mittelstadt Academy

Flipping through his deck of cards, Lucas paid little attention to the others on the bus. His cards were just a bit larger than standard playing cards, made of rare metals and intricate magical carvings, then topped off with a unique language his family had designed. He didn't want to be here, of all the places his family could send him, it had to be the most prestigious and uppity place around. He'd been trying to move out of home for ages to get away from all the high class political droll everyone else went on about, but a mystical military academy was the last place he expected to be semi-forced to attend. Especially since the only magic he knew was Card Magic, which if anything, was more akin to arts and crafts. He loved his parents, and he'd definitely seek ways to improve the family magic, but sometimes they just didn't listen.

The bus came to a stop, drawing Lucas' attention to the window. He knew of Mittelstadt Academy, occasionally visiting to see siblings and whatnot. Feeling a hand on his shoulder, Lucas turned around to see Adrial, hiding under a metal weaved hood and mask. Unsurprisingly, she wasn't allowed to come aboard in full-plate armour, using her abilities to manipulate her suit and weapons into a solid-metal suitcase; toting it around like nothing despite weighing 60kg in the least.

"Alright Lucas, everyone is getting off the bus, lets go," she said, gently lifting him out of his seat with ease.

Stepping outside, Lucas shoved his deck back into its metal container, glancing at the others before stopping over the current speaker Endrial. A clearly non-human woman and Spirit to the Dean, someone Adrial certainly won't approve of if her groan told him anything. She'd never admit it, but Adrial had a severe dislike of the demon aesthetic, something about the horns serving no purpose and the colours being too flamboyant. The chances of the all too prideful Adrial calmly letting someone fitting that description to a tee... well, it just won't go over smoothly. The very thought of them bickering made him chuckle, quickening his pace as Adrial shot a knowing glare his way.

Candace

Candace was one of the first ones off the bus and was accompanying Gabriella pretty closely. Of course they were close. While most wouldn’t be sure who was quite in control between the more proper but weak in combat master and the more aggressive and physically domineering spirit, Gabriella tended to have a metaphorical leash on Candace all of the time. She kind of had to. Candace wasn’t only reckless in battle, it wouldn’t take much for her to get in some kind of trouble if she was left to her own devices.

In a way, that was what was good about the relationship between spirit and master. While the spirit could typically do more in combat, they didn’t always have the same overarching direction that mages had. Mages, on the other hand, knew how to work with a spirit to accomplish some kind of goal. One was the muscle most of the time and the other one was the strategist. Alone, either one of them could be defeated. Together, they were much tougher. And Candace and Gabriella were an example of a spirit and mage who were closer together than most.

“So, I’m hoping there’s something more interesting in store,” she said, walking next to Gabriella with her arms folded across her chest, already looking like she wished something would happen. “This place looks nice and all but if we just wanted to look at nice buildings we could have just stayed at your place,” she added. She’d already been around this kind of thing as Gabriella’s spirit, and it didn’t really do much for her.

Maybe some could appreciate the nice style of the buildings, something of a combination between traditional German and modern university style, but she was looking for something else that would be more interesting to herself personally. Something like fighting, chatting up someone attractive, pissing off authority, that kind of thing. The things that tended to land her in trouble.

Which was why it looked like Gabriella would have to use a bit more pull on the metaphorical leash if she didn’t want problems.

Juno Helena Kunze / Arios

Juno Kunze wasn’t in any rush to get off the bus. She watched some of the others leave, kept her eyes on them for a bit as she silently observed, and then she offered a wave to her spirit as she stood up and moved to the steps of the bus, hands in her pockets the entire time. This place was nice but it wasn’t something that’d impress her that easily. She had been in Schwer’s Landing. She knew what high profile mage locales looked like, this one actually had less luxuries than the one that she had spent much of her life in before her exile. Not that she had possessed any of those luxuries for herself. Her stepmother was simply a cleaner, working in the service of the mages who owned the place.

And maybe living in the shadow of the Schwer family and their associates was the reason she felt a bit restless now, her eyes glancing around before settling on the path in front of her, her ears not paying much attention to Endriel’s speech as she focused on other things. She already knew what these places were like. Knew how you could get ahead not by merit but just by ties. It made her wonder if that was how this academy was going to be. There wasn’t anyone here that could outwork her. She knew that even before meeting them, because they didn’t have the experiences she did. They didn’t have the drive she did.

But would she come out ahead in the end or would it be some of the others who had stronger ties? Some of the ones that weren’t bastard children from families where that was a very real and very bad label which could screw someone’s life over as soon as it began? There were some advantages to mage families and being from one, but there were also plenty of disadvantages. One of them being that circumstances like that just couldn’t be helped.

All the magic in the world couldn’t change the fact that you’d be looked down upon as a bastard in the Great Houses. Nor could all the determination in the world. She could only try, and hope that the powers that be didn’t favor anyone else too much because of it.

But regardless, she expected some favoritism one way or another. One thing that she had gotten through her head early on was that the magic world was not fair. Expecting it to be fair was an easy path to a quick downfall career wise as others took advantage of that unfair system. Until someone reached the top and broke the system, it would be like that. Maybe it would be her. But if she did reach the top of the system, there was little chance of her wanting to change it. And she supposed it was like that for most others who had the power to, also. If there was even anyone strong enough to handle the Great Houses and their agents in the Guild.

“Come on, Juno,” said Arios, her towering spirit who had been forced to duck while getting off the bus. Arios was a bit more relaxed, carrying a large blade over his shoulder rather than in the bag on his back. Something of a message to everyone else, showing off his… Strength. Of course, one couldn’t judge magic strength from physical skill, but it never hurt to be both an athlete and a mage. Those who could combine physical aspects of fighting along with precise and lethal magic tended to be the most dangerous ones on the battlefield.

Hit a weak person with a magical attack and there was a chance they would go down with no more incident. Hit someone strong enough with the same one and you might just have them get back up, close the distance, and strike back with an attack of their own. It was an edge that Arios would have over some, and a part of his fighting style that even tied into his choices in magic.

Perhaps more importantly, though, it was easier for Ario to be the calm voice than it was for her. Another important part of being a mage was knowing which fights to get into, what moves to make, and all of that. All the fighting skill in the world couldn’t help a person that made bad decisions about which fights to get into, even strong magic couldn’t bail someone out who went down a path that just wouldn’t work for them. Arios was good at keeping Juno on the right path.

And this was one of those times.

“No point having anxiety about this, you’ve had weeks to prepare and we’re here at this point,” Arios continued, slapping her on the back as they walked near the rear of the group, Juno looking up occasionally to check out the others. She tended to have the presence of a General or an Admiral but not yet. She needed to know this place, know what she was working with, and then she would be able to act as that. She was, however, a quick learner. It wouldn’t be long before she was in her element.

“Right. Just wondering how hard I should expect to get fucked by the administration around here,” Juno said, offering a shrug. “Because this place sure feels a lot like Schwer Landing and while you haven’t been there before, I have. Spent most of my life there. I know that this feeling in my gut isn’t a good one.”

“You’re never in a good position, you make something of it anyway. Just have to do that again,” Arios said, and they fell silent as they followed after the group of others.

Archie and The Witch King | Mittlerstadt Academy Grounds

"Guess we can finally enter this place, huh? I've been looking forward to this!" Archie could barely contain his excitement as the bus pulled over in front of the gate of Mittlerstadt Academy. He had been waiting to enter the academy for a year, after all. Archie received his letter of acceptance the previous year, but as he had applied during the off-season, he wasn't immediately admitted into the academy. It didn't matter to Archie, though. He spent all of last year honing his magic, practicing various techniques together with his Spirit, The Witch King. He felt somewhat confident, but he knew full well the dangers he was getting into.

Mittlerstadt wasn't just another academy, but one of the most prestigious around the world. In here, students were trained to become agents of the Guild, after which they would be sent around the world in various assignments. Ranging from simple tasks to dangerous quests, life as a Guild agent wasn't going to be easy, but Archie knew what he was going for, and applied anyway. This was his golden ticket after all, the silver bullet for the proverbial gun of his life.

If I can show those bastards back at California just what I'd be able to achieve, then perhaps they might accept my choices. But even if they didn't, I'm not changing my course. This is what I want, and I'm going to get it!

"Aren't you excited, WiKi? You are, aren't you?! I mean, we're at the Academy now, man. You should perk up or something, maybe take a chill pill, dude."

WiKi, of course, was Archie's nickname for his Spirit, The Witch King. It might seem like a grave insult to a dignified Spirit to have his title shortened into what seemed to be a silly nickname, but apparently The Witch King didn't mind. He didn't give any other name when he was summoned, nor did he ever dissuade Archie from calling him that. Then again, he wouldn't have been able to stop Archie anyway, not without cutting his head off.

"Now, settle down, Master Archie. There are proper protocols to follow for our arrival here in Mittlerstadt. Also, I believe silence would be in order. You're disturbing the other passengers. Now, let us disembark from this vehicle and proceed to the gate. It would seem someone is waiting for us." At that, The Witch King simply picked up his mage's bags and carried them, exiting the vehicle at a quick pace while following the others. Archie, not wanting to be left behind, followed immediately behind, and both soon found themselves listening to a short speech from the person, or rather Spirit, who was waiting for them.

"Cool speech, eh? Truth be told, I wasn't listening to most of it. Give me the quick rundown, WiKi!" Archie whispered silently to his Spirit, hoping that Endriel hadn't noticed he was paying attention. Having meticulously listened to her speech, on the other hand, The Witch King was able to condense it into a short version his mage would be able to understand. Archie wasn't stupid by any means, but rather he was rather prone to doing his own thing when coordination and teamwork wasn't needed. By this, it meant that rather than listening to Endriel's speech, Archie was checking out his surroundings, looking at the various sights the Academy had to offer.

"Hmmm, make friends, eh? Well, I suppose that's something to do. I'd rather explore right now, though." At that, Archie let his mind wander, while The Witch King simply followed his mage, though he had to reel in Archie every now and then when the mage began trying to wander off on his own.

Ikki Arinaga, scion of the Great House of Japan!

"So Ikki, how many of these people did you get to introduce yourself to before the bus trip?" Enrir spoke up in the middle of gawking over the pristine architecture surrounding the group as they went forward, trailing behind the group. For a Spirit which was used to a more traditional Japanese style as well as the hyper dense and modern Tokyo panorama, this was a very welcome change of pace. Ikki, however, did not pay much attention to the details - his eyes were instead focused on the people in the group before him. "There's some really interesting people you'll have to study with, perhaps you've-"

"None. I've introduced myself to none." Ikki responded, laconically. Not that he wasn't interested in finding out more about them - he's going to be competing with every single person here, after all. Hell, if he was able to, he'd probably be taking notes right now - unfortunately, writing while walking wasn't easy when your right arm was wrapped up in bandaged and suspended as if the bones inside had gotten shattered in some unfortunate incident. While trailing after the group, Ikki was quick to catch a conversation taking place just a few steps away from him.

A black-haired girl was talking to her Spirit about anxiety, worries about getting screwed over by the administration and trying to push those thoughts aside. Really now? Unless this girl was being an outlier, Ikki expected a lot more resolved people to end up invited, considering that just getting to Mittelstadt was far from an easy task.

Whatever.

"If you're already worrying about the administration's spanking, then you're half-way there already." Ikki muttered, his gaze not even fixated towards Juno and her Spirit, before he finally turned his face towards her and stretched out his left hand towards the woman. It's only fair to start getting to know these people. "My name's Ikki. Ikki Arinaga, by Western name order. What's yours?"

Gabriella Sara Bianchi-Costa

"There's always something more interesting in store, Candace." Gabriella rolled her eyes, looking over at her spirit as she walked next to her. It was always difficult when she got like this, since she had to reign her back in, prevent her doing anything... Too stupid, either that or point her at something else to distract her for a while.

"It's just been a while since I've been here, you know?" She added, turning back to face forwards as she walked. "Besides, it's not really the buildings that are interesting. I'm just making sure I know what they look like, where they are. Wouldn't do to get lost in this place, after all. You'll have something that's more to your tastes to do than wandering around soon enough, don't worry yourself about that. Just let me get to my room and unpack my things before you decide to do something stupid like chatting someone else up or punching out a wall or deciding that one of the other spirits looked at you funny or me funny or whatever excuse you're currently thinking of right now for starting a fight so their face needs pulverizing. Please?"

She wasn't entirely confident it'd work. No, that was being generous. If anything she was more confident that it wouldn't work than it would, but she had to give off the appearance she was at least trying to restrain Candace, but if she decided she was going to do something and she truly set her mind to it, then there was quite honestly little she could do to actually stop her from doing it. Most of what she did amounted to little more than damage control most of the time.

Candace

“What? It’s what we’re meant to do,” shrugged Candace, picking Gabriella up quite easily and holding her overhead, spinning her around slightly as she continued walking down the path where they had been sent. It wasn’t hard for her, she had the extra strength as a spirit and Gabriella was lighter than a lot of humans. It might look like an impressive feat to one, with Candace not really being the biggest spirit, but it was just natural to her.

“You don’t give a car a Lamborghini engine and then expect it to sit around like a Toyota,” she added, rolling her eyes at the fact that Gabriella didn’t expect her to start a fight or get into some kind of trouble. And there were already so many possibilities about what she could get into. There were plenty of other spirits around here, who could probably raise hell with her, and an entire place she had never been before. And she had the strength to raise hell as indicated by her analogy and the fact that she was lifting Gabriella overhead right now.

“But for you, I guess, I’ll stay in line. For now. I expect entertainment eventually, unless you feel like having me make some,” she said, moving to put Gabriella on her shoulders.

She shrugged and continued walking. “Somehow, though, I feel like you’re going to say that I shouldn’t.”

Gabriella Sara Bianchi-Costa

"Yes, I'll have to say you shouldn't go and make trouble I'm afraid." Gabriella looked down at Candace, crossing her arms and resting them on Candace's head. She'd grown used to being manhandled like a sack by her spirit, but that didn't mean she liked being manhandled, especially not in public. It was undignified, unbefitting of nobility, but, well, Candace was Candace. It kept her from doing more... Damaging things, and it kept her around.

"But thanks for not starting anything just yet." She patted Candace lightly on the head. "You'll get to kick someone's ribs in sooner or later, don't worry about it. I'd offer to let you fight me after I've unpacked, but, well..." She let out a laugh. "We both know how that'll end, so there's not really much point in it." Normally she wouldn't admit she'd lose a fight for certain, but it was a simple case of mathematics. Spirits beat mages. Candace was more powerful than her, and perhaps more importantly, Candace knew her. Rune magic depended heavily on variety and pre-combat preparations, since your arsenal was limited by what you brought. And Candace knew her arsenal in full, knew her usual tricks, knew how rune magic worked, knew its weaknesses.

Or, at least Gabriella hoped she did. She had to have picked something up over time.

"Or you can go out and challenge someone while I unpack my things, if you want since you'd probably just get bored while I do that, just try not to make everything explode and be on fire if you do since it's the first day we're here, you know? I'll be able to find you when I'm unpacked by following the sounds of violence, so don't worry about me."

The group had finally managed to arrive at the northeast side of the campus where the apartments were, some people already walking around the area which was slightly closed off from other parts of the campus by trees around the walkways and apartment blocks. “We’re here. The northeast side, otherwise known as the place you’re going to be staying for the next years,” said Endriel, stopping in her tracks before pointing to a certain apartment block that didn’t look as busy as the others.

“You’re in that building. Should be mostly empty, it’s a pretty new one that we haven’t filled up yet after all. And you, freshman class, are going to live there. You should have already been assigned your room numbers, but in case any of you forgot them, you should be able to head to the desk and figure that out,” she continued, before stopping and pausing with a chuckle. “Oh, and you’re all staying with your spirits, so while the apartments are generally the size of a standard one bedroom one, you’ll have to deal with having two people around. We might be rich, but the higher ups didn’t want to spend the extra cash to house the spirits separately.”

“I’ve been told however that each bedroom should have two beds at least,” she added, before starting to walk towards the building.

“You’re going to paint all over the room as soon as we show up, aren’t you?” Candace asked Gabriella meanwhile, sticking around despite her desires to go off and cause trouble. For now. If she felt bored enough she could go off and cause a ruckus at any time, but for now, she listened to Gabriella’s judgement. She could at least do that some of the time. It was the times that she didn’t that ended up concerning.

“Maybe if you learned some kind of real magic we could actually spar.”

She pouted slightly, going back to the earlier conversation. They both knew that Gabriella wasn’t going to spar with her, at least not for very long. Most of the time, the mage was the brain and the spirit was the muscle. But that was doubly true for them. Gabriella, well, didn’t really offer much muscle at all while Candace brought all of it as a tank who relied on heavy armor and a hard hitting fighting style.

But she was fine with it that way. Just raised her value, meant that she was needed since she tended to do all of the work in battles unlike a spirit who worked with a more balanced mage.

“All the time you spend painting you could spend doing other things, you know.”

Gabriella Sara Bianchi-Costa

"Why wouldn't I paint all over it?" Gabriella seemed almost confused by the suggestion, leaning forwards so she could tilt her head down to look at Candace's face as they walked, ducking whenever they encountered a door. She could just ask her to put her down, but most of the time that was just an exercise in futility. If Candace wanted to carry her somewhere she got carried to wherever the somewhere was. "My 'painting' as you so eloquently describe it is a perfectly legitimate form of magic, just because it doesn't have direct combat applications doesn't render it any less real than you setting everything around you on fire, I just have to paint things before I can set them on fire."

Gabriella tilted her head slightly. "I guess I could paint the substantial parts of the runic arrays later when you've found somewhere to raise hell in a more controlled fashion, but I want to get some of the basic components down immediately if you don't mind, and then I'll do something else. You remember what happened back home, I'm not taking any chances out here either. I'm sure you'd prefer to discover we're being attacked from an alarm than before a blizzard or something sweeps into our room while we're sleeping, no?"

Nadia Tiernan/Éadaoin

Nadia avoided most of the rest of the group for now. She had plenty of time to get to know all of them, plenty of time to sort the interesting and boring. Plenty of time for her to figure out who knew how to have proper fun. Nadia would find her way to her room easily enough, Éadaoin in tow. Éadaoin for her part watched everyone, trying to figure out what was what. She wouldn't wait the same way Nadia would, but neither would she make a move. She wasn't....really the one that wanted to make any moves unless she had to. Éadaoin had other tastes, and so far only Nadia had ever known how to help them. Once the pair got to their room, they started unpacking, hiding away their more private items first, and then dealing with things like clothes, and other personal effects. They'd be unpacking for awhile, if only because they'd be....distracted more often than not. Whatever, so long as it got done.

Rosalie Morrigan/Autumn

Rosalie hurried to her room, as many of her bags clenched under her arms, and in her hands as she could manage. Autumn followed behind, carrying the rest. Many of Rosalie's bags made loud clanking noises, she'd packed every project, every work in progress, every prototype she could. All of them forged, enchanted, and manipulated any different ways. Tests, attempts to increase efficiency, or strength. Some were good, and useful to anyone that knew how to use or wear it, others were near useless, more a failure than anything else. But one could learn from their failures. Rosalie dumped the bags on the floor, flinching as she heard one of her brittle failures crack. She'd had to destroy it eventually, but she didn't like breaking things on accident. Autumn for her part, rolled her eyes, and moved to start unpacking Rosalie's actual important stuff. Clothes, and other such things, as the often single minded mage focused on the rest of her stuff.

Vatnar Eldursson

"So this is what Mittlerstadt Academy looks like, I thought the place would be... bigger somehow". Vatnar thought to himself as he walked to the apartments. He had stayed quiet, silently looking around the campus as they walked. He had heard good things about Mittlerstadt Academy and he hoped that what he heard was true. He got a good look at his fellow students and wondered who among is friendly and who is not. Better stick with the people that he can trust and talk while he was here. He turned his head to the side as he watched Thava looking around the campus. This was their second-time leaving Iceland and he can bet that Thava has all sorts of questions about this place. It was good to get outside of Iceland and away from the house politics, he just hopes that this trip does not turn into what happened the first time he left Iceland. He shook as the thought of what happened in Wales. House politics at their worse and he does not need another incident like that again.

When it was time to get a room for himself, he walked away from the group and went inside. Thava followed and Vatnar choose a room on the second floor and the two went to unpack their things.

Candace

“Okay, okay, so maybe it is a form of magic and I’ll admit that even if it’s grudging. But it’s just not the same and you know it. There’s a big difference between being able to do something with runes and being able to do it instantly because you put more actual effort into learning magic and figured out how to do it the direct way. The difference between spending a bunch of time painting something to set something else on fire and just, you know, doing it. I can act at the snap of a finger because of my style. You? Let’s just say you’re fucked if you ever manage to get caught out without me,” sighed Candace, pursuing the argument about which style of magic was better.

“I guess if you were born with it no one could really complain, but it’s not like you’re an angel or a demon or a spirit. You weren’t born with a specific type of magic, you looked through all of them and you went into this one as the one you wanted to study, which leaves me a little concerned,” she continued, her voice more serious than it had been before. Candace didn’t take everything seriously but she did take fighting seriously. And magic was a key part of fighting for both of them, the master and the spirit.

She couldn’t choose her master but that also didn’t mean she had to approve of her tactics. “If someone burst into the room right now you wouldn’t be able to do anything since you haven’t been able to paint just yet. Just saying that. You know, shock and awe is a commonly used tactic for a reason.”

Right, shock and awe. One of the tactics used famously by the U.S. military in their wars in the Middle East. It tended to be pretty successful, at least against competition that was of a lower status when it came to conventional war. It was somewhat surprising for Candace to throw out a term like that in a debate, but again, she took fighting seriously. So it made sense that she knew a bit about the kind of tactics that had worked.

Then again, they weren’t fighting with nations here. Mage battles were closer to individual affairs and they tended to happen in the shadows unless someone was fighting an abnormal threat such as Xenofront, who didn’t bother with hiding themselves for example.

“God forbid you find out something and need to change the plan on the battlefield,” she added. She was pushing for this partly because, well, she was the one that had to do the actual fighting rather than Gabriella. The one that had to rely on support from a mage to do her job against any other competent spirit who had support from a mage. So she hoped their styles could align well when it came time to actually use their skills.

And that time, knowing that they had just arrived at the academy, was going to come soon.

Gabriella Sara Bianchi-Costa

"And you wonder why I dislike you wandering off so much." Gabriella rolled her eyes. Granted, that was also to stop Candace causing whatever form of trouble she decided would be most entertaining, but she could have multiple reasons for wanting one particular thing. And she knew full well the assorted weaknesses of her particular style of magic; she needed time to prepare for any given battle, time to draw runes and to set herself up.

"And believe me, I know full well how my magic works. I get more dangerous the more time I have to prepare and the more information I have." She added, poking Candace lightly in the forehead. "You're just as fucked facing any water mage or spirit if they burst in right now or if you have a week's worth of preparation. I'd also be screwed in the former, but I'd fare fine in the latter." She paused. "Probably on all counts." You could never ever quite be sure with battles involving mages and spirits. There were always too many variables to take into account.

"Just it means I need to have a sufficient quantity of pre-prepared runes before any fight, plus I have my armour and weapons and you of course. Most problems can be solved through a sufficient application of enchanted grenades and/or bullets or you just stabbing them through the chest. Also, uh, can you put me down now?"

Endriel had stepped out into the main hallway when most of the students had finished with getting their bags into their rooms. They would have to unpack at length some more later, but for now, most of them had gotten everything into their rooms and were ready to either finish unpacking or check out the rest of the campus. And for those who wanted to check out the campus, there was a good chance to see one of the places where they would spend quite a lot of time. That place was the central training center where they had gym facilities, sparring areas, and the firing range.

“If any of you want to come with me,” said Endriel, moving to the hallway where most of the rooms were located at for this group of freshmen. “I’m heading down to the training center. Or the place with the gym, the range, and just about everything else you need to improve the physical side of your fighting skills. I suggest that you spirits all check it out and get familiar with it. Just because you don’t have a human body doesn’t mean you don’t need to think about getting stronger if you want an edge over serious enemies someday.”

She turned to head out, briefly waiting to see who was going to follow her as she started out of the apartment block and towards the training center, which was located to the south and was somewhat between the main campus and the apartments on the far northeast side of the place. Not too long a walk from either, which was why it had been positioned there.

“Endriel, I see you’re bringing the freshmen here already.”

She looked up to see Caine Rayden, one of the instructors around here and someone whose last name spoke for itself. “What are you trying to do, make them starstruck already by showing up here?” she asked with a chuckle, teasingly.

Caine just shook his head and gestured back towards the inside. “Nah. Was just working out a few minutes ago, Nico’s still in there too. Hard to be an instructor if your students are stronger than you, after all.”

“Somehow I don’t think you’re in need of a workout to be stronger than them,” Endriel said with a roll of the eyes. “I suppose your formal introduction to them will be another time,” she added, opening the door to the complex and gesturing to the students that had followed after her. “That, everyone, is one of your combat instructors, Caine Rayden. And this is the training facility where both spirits and mages work on their physical skills. I believe if we look around enough, we might bump into your other primary field instructor, Nico Lucius.”

“I have more flexibility when dealing with a water mage than you have in general, considering you flat out can’t fight without your precious prep time and your fancy pre planned moves. You would end up frozen without anything to do, I would be able to take the head off the enemy with my sword. Not the easiest thing to do or the first option but like I said, I’m a bit more flexible than you. Even a water mage isn’t going to have a one trick solution to beating me once they’re staring down this armor, water magic or not,” Candace said, slightly annoyed in her tone as she started towards the edge of the room.

She set Gabriella down before opening the door and stepping out of it and back into the hallway. Before she went fully out of the room, however, she paused.

“So go ahead. Do your paintings. Just don’t let me down when it comes time to actually need it…” she started, stepping out and looking over her shoulder for a moment before continuing down her path out of the room. “Because if my magic is subpar by most standards, I don’t really know what to call yours.”

She was irritated, and she didn’t stop as she continued walking, heading towards the stairwell to go back down to the lobby and see what the other group had been up to. She’d heard the noises of multiple people leaving. It had to be because of something interesting, so she planned on following them. Better than just hanging around here and waiting for Gabriella to finish painting their room.

Not that she even preferred that it happened at all.

Gabriella Sara Bianchi-Costa

Gabriella didn't say anything in response to Candace, just remaining silent, lost in thought as Candace set her down and left.

Part of her wanted to go after Candace, but, well, she didn't know what she'd even say if she found her. Yes, she knew full well the weaknesses of her particular brand of magic, but it had its advantages too. Sure, maybe it was taking being a jack of all trades, master of none to a bit of an extreme in terms of capabilities, and yes, without time to prepare properly she was little more than a sitting duck with nothing more to rely on than her enchanted weapons...

But she was far more flexible in what she could do, but again, that all came down to being given time to prepare for any given engagement. Which, as Candace had pointed out and as she'd learned back home in Rome, she wouldn't always get.

That just meant she had to make more general preparations further in advance. It was quick to infuse a rune with magic; it took longer to paint one.

She let out a small sigh as she set her case down and opened it, removing the pots of paint and brushes that she used for painting her runes. She wasn't going to give her room the full array of defensive runes she knew, that would take too much time and would likely be a waste of it nonetheless given the rest of the building wouldn't be anywhere near as fortified unlike her family's mansion was with runes. But a few to prevent forced entry would likely be enough, and a few others that just made it a bit more livable.

She hummed to herself as she began to paint, still slightly distracted from her argument with Candace and wondering what form of trouble she was going to find herself in before she was done while simultaneously trying to figure out how she'd apologise to her. Happy spirits were loyal spirits, after all, and she needed Candace to stick around.

Edge of the Future, Chapter One

【KNIFE'S EDGE】

Collaborative post between Forest State and Lunas Legion

The passenger in the back of the Bombardier transport jet that had just touched down at the private Mage’s Guild airfield in Mittlerstadt was a number of different things to a number of different people. To some, she was a series of numbers without a true name. Not even human. To others, she was something of a... Special subject. Someone to be watched. Someone to be appreciated even. To herself, and to her brothers and sisters, she was Lyvia, someone not just with a name but with a reputation for standing up for those who she thought worthy of protecting.

All of those definitions didn’t matter. She was in Mittlerstadt right now. She was supposed to meet a couple of others and they would be turning her loose here. That was the only thing that mattered, and yet, she wasn’t here because she was fighting under the banner of some nation, even if her task was definitely going to involve fighting. No, she had no nation. No real name. No recognized face. She was here on the orders of the Guild and they could bring her back at any time.

And those orders were the only thing that mattered at the moment.

“We’re letting you off here,” the handler said, hovering over her for a moment to unlock the cuffs around her wrists. “But turn feral or otherwise kick up a ruckus and you’re going to end up right back in the pen. Wait in the lounge, we’re still awaiting another arrival which should be within the hour.”

Lyvia stretched once the cuffs were released. “And that would be?”

“Chelsea Bianchi-Costa. Your next master.”

“Oh.”

The door at the side of the jet was opened and Lyvia climbed out as the sole passenger in the back, walking alone across the tarmac as the plane taxied off and cleared the runway for landing in the distance. Freedom. This was what it was like. Not having a handler following her, having her wrists free. Although she knew deep down it was only an illusion of freedom. She still was a soldier for no nation after all, attached instead to the organization that she owed most everything to.

She pushed her way through the exterior doors that led to the lounge part of the small airport and sat by the window to watch for the next flight. The one that was carrying her master, or at least what they called the master. Taming her was harder than it seemed from the reports. “Chelsea Bianchi-Costa...” she muttered under her breath, taking in the name as she reached in her pocket for a phone, deciding to do a little bit of research. “Let’s see how long it is before I either break you or send you back off to where you came from...”

Chelsea wasn't a fan of flying. Oh, it was convinient, but that didn't mean she had to like it. Her family's private Learjet touched down with a light bump.

"We're here." She said as she stood, her white-haired spirit following soon after. Iona was short, shorter than her, but that just made people underestimate her. There was some grumbling from her other 'spirit', Ash, as he stood up. He wasn't really a spirit, but given he followed her around like one, it was an apt description. He was a bodyguard/retainer/teacher with occasional assassination on the side, and he'd been a friend of her family for what seemed like forever. He was getting on in years from his grey hair and scarred, weathered face, but there was no one else she truly trusted to have her back if it came down to it. His spirit, Maya, followed after him, her eyes shut and a seemingly empty expression on her face, but she didn't stumble once as the group of four disembarked onto the runway.

Chelsea had stopped at the bottom to let the other three catch up, Maya and Iona walking side by side behind her, Ash lazily strolling along behind them, whistling to himself. They entered the airport in silence, navigating their way through it to the lounge where the others were waiting with practiced ease from making the same trip several times before.

Mittlerstadt, Germany, is home to the headquarters of the Mage's Guild as well as the Mittlerstadt Academy responsible for training new agents. The city has long been recognized as one of the most important locations for mages in general and isn't far from Schwer Landing, the place where many of the most important magical relics reside. In recent years, however, the city has become a battleground both for mage families and for enemy organizations such as Xenofront and the Black Circle.

"I'm assuming you're the one we're here to meet?" She asked as she approached. "I'm afraid they only gave me your appearance and designation, but I'm assuming you have a name?" She didn't like how little she knew. It meant something was off. And things being off, well. That was universally never a good sign.

Lyvia looked at the person approaching her with contempt, some of her messy black hair casting a shadow over her face as her lavender eyes met Chelsea's purple eyes. "Lyvia," she said, but she didn't offer her hand or any other friendly gesture such as that. The only thing she did was pull her shirt off and over her head, leaving her standing there in a sports bra - a peculiar move but the reason for it would become clear in a minute. She had done so to make room for the wings which quickly emerged from her back.

As soon as she did that, she put the wings into action and sprung forward, using them to propel herself into the group at rapid pace and extending her hands as blades of shadow materialized in them and were quickly sent in varying directions. Well, the first two were sent in the directions that could be expected - towards the second member of their group and his spirit, while the third one that was formed shortly after the toss remained in Lyvia's hand as she went for Chelsea's spirit, gripping her by the neck with her free hand as she drove her to the wall.

It wasn't because she wanted a fight. It was because she wanted to assert herself.

And being someone from a world where violence was the way of things, this was the way she knew how to do so. After all, her master having another spirit that was above her in standing would be... Unacceptable. And so she would prove her superiority in the only way she knew how to, like this, as she moved fast as lightning and carried both her and Iona into the sky slightly on her black wings, which could sent her quite high towards the ceiling after one strong thrust of them.

Chelsea frowned as Lyvia didn't take her hand, but what happened next caught her and the others completely off guard. Ash was already moving when he saw the blades and wings materialise, leaping to one side as the blade impaled itself next to where he'd been standing, narrowly missing his leg. Maya's eyes shot open, flaring a brilliant pink briefly before she simply stepped just so and the blade sailed past her, cutting her clothes so short the distance between it and her.

Iona was not so lucky, panicking as Lyvia gripped her by the neck, confused by what was going on, trying to mentally process it all and figure out a counter even as she was slammed into the wall, wincing in pain before they shot upwards.

"Lyvia, explain yourself!" Chelsea shouted as she turned around, Ash pushing himself up to his feet, Maya standing there impassively with her blazingly bright eyes. "And set Iona down." She added, calmer this time. She had no idea what was going on, since she hadn't been attacked yet everyone else had which made the situation... Confusing. And as difficult as it might be, she had to remain calm.

The warning only served to make Lyvia increase her grip as she spun around to face the group but kept Iona in her grasp, able to squeeze down some more and snap her neck if they forced her. They were, after all, dealing with a demonic spirit, someone with enhanced strength compared to a less exotic one. "You shouldn't have come here and brought another spirit, that was a mistake," she growled towards Chelsea as she increased her grasp.

"An insult, I would actually say, something that you shouldn't have done if you care about the wellbeing of that spirit..." Her voice trailed off before she started to continue. "Because fact of the matter is, I'm not anyone's number two," she continued, as she flung the third blade down towards Chelsea herself using her free hand.

Chelsea stepped aside, old reflexes flaring back to life as the blade flew towards her. She flicked her eyes down towards the blade before staring back up at Lyvia and Iona. "And a mage going anywhere without a spirit is a mage asking for an untimely death." Chelsea shot back, Ash raising a hand to signal Maya not to make any aggressive moves. "Whatever offence I may have inadvertently caused you by bringing Iona here, I apologise for. You've more than proven your point about not being anyone's second, so let Iona go, and neither I or the others shall hold any of this against you. You're stuck with me and the others, so we may as well all try and get along or at least tolerate one another's existences."

Lyvia didn't just set Iona down, she threw her back towards Chelsea. She could either catch her or get out of the way of the throw at the expense of her spirit, Lyvia didn't really care which option ended up happening. She herself remained where she was, the thrust of her wings keeping her in the air as she looked down at the others that had been sent for her. "Her mere presence is a problem. But I'll let her go on this instance because going further would create problems with the Guild," she said, making eye contact with Chelsea directly. "Next time I feel provoked, however, I might not hesitate."

Chelsea didn't move to dodge Iona, instead raising her arms to catch her, dropping down to one knee as she caught her. Iona said nothing, as she stood up, brushing herself down, glaring up at Lyvia.

"Then tell me what might provoke you, so it won't happen again." Chelsea said, meeting Lyvia's gaze, not flinching. "We're a team, we're used to working together, and that includes you now, which means we look after each other and don't annoy each other. But thank you, for letting Iona go." She turned her gaze away from Lyvia, back towards Iona, her gaze hardening. "She's going to be... Mildly angry with you, but it won't come to anything, now will it?"

A noticable pause followed, before Iona shook her head, saying "It won't," in a quiet voice.

"You've got guts, new girl." Ash added, chuckling to himself as he stood back up. "And I can respect that. I'm Ash, the annoying airhead of a spirit is Maya." He gestured vaguely towards Maya, who now had her eyes shut again and gave a small wave in the vague direction of Lyvia.

"I'm used to fighting. I'm sure some would be intimidated by the likes of you all but I can handle tougher. I was born to handle tougher," said Lyvia, finally dropping to the ground as she allowed her wings to disappear, shifting fully back into the human form that she had started off in. Although, she was still missing her shirt and instead showed off a decent amount of muscle. She wasn't bulky, but she made the most of the weight she had and much of it was muscular.

"That's in her court, not mine," she replied to Chelsea. "Just don't get too much in my way in spots where it matters and I'm sure we can work out a decent relationship. I'm not exactly too fond of being put under a master but hey, Guild orders. Step on my toes, however, and I'll make you regret being assigned to deal with me."

It was a matter of independence, really. She wanted it and the the Guild wouldn't give it to her. So she would push her master into giving it to her unofficially.

However, there was still one person that had yet to show up, and the conversation would be interrupted by that car pulling up not far from the lounge and someone getting out and approaching the building. The last member of their party and another one who had been assigned to work on this... Special case. The young Asian man was a bit rough around the edges in appearance, closer to Lyvia than to Chelsea in terms of style really. And yet, he was obviously looking for that group, and there was no mistake about it. He had been assigned to them.

"Hayato Miura, reporting in for duty," he stated upon entering, although his own eyes seemed to have the same contempt that Lyvia's had earlier when she had first seen Chelsea. As if they were two different crowds that wouldn't mix under normal circumstances, and were being forced to in this situation.

"And I'm not fond of having you assigned to me based on how you've acted so far." Chelsea shrugged as she talked.

"As far as I'm concerned, the same applies in reverse. Do as you wish, don't get in the way of me and mine unless you can justify it afterwards. I don't particularly like the idea of spirits being assigned to masters either, so as far as I'm concerned, that's merely bureaucracy for the Guild." Chelsea fell back into silence, internally wondering why she'd bothered to come back into active service if she was going to be greeted with a situation like this.

There was a very good reason she would've preferred it was just her, Ash and a select few others that'd been unavailable that she knew and trusted. And then the final member of their team arrived, and he gave off the same vibe that she got from Lyvia, rough, ill-tempered, barely concealed contempt for her in his eyes. It took a great deal of effort not to sigh. They were just saddling her with the problem cases at this point, weren't they? She paused. She looked from side to side, as if double-checking herself.

"Where is your spirit, Hayato?" She asked, her voice cold. She had no taste for pranks.

Rosalie Morrigan/Autumn

Autumn watched the time carefully, giving Rosalie fifteen minutes to unpack and sort. If she didn't keep her on a schedule, there was no telling when Rosalie was done. At the end of the fifteen minutes, Autumn walked up to the taller mage that summoned her, and grabbed her, pulling her away from her things. Rosalie opened her mouth to protest, but Autumn shut her down before she could finish.

"I gave you plenty of time, now it's time for something I want to do. So we're going to go spar. Don't give me that face, you know full well we both need to practice."

Rosalie crossed her arms and sighed, pulling free of Autumn's grasp and following behind her. Rosalie was subdued, for now. There was no telling how long it would take for her to put her foot down again, and reassert control. Not that either really fought for control. It was more of a back and forth between them, with each taking turns being in charge, though Autumn usually deferred to Rosalie in times of stress. Social stuff may be hard for Rosalie, but many other things were not.

"Autumn, sometimes I swear you think of yourself as my caretaker."

"Well you don't take care of yourself, so someone has to."

"Shut up...."

"Never."

Field Instructor Nico Lucius was indeed in the training center when the group showed up, although she largely missed the fact that they were there because she was busy with her own things. More specifically, she was busy in one of the fighting rings within the large open area that made up the largest room on the ground floor, the one that had plenty of training equipment of all types as well as areas for the students and others to practice their skills through one on one fighting. She’d gotten there before they did. Training was always something important for her, but even moreso now that she was alone without a spirit.

No one was going to act as her shield. If Nico Lucius wanted to survive, she was going to have to do it herself and not rely on someone with superior ability to fight for her.

She was blocking a number of blows and rolling from others to avoid them. Light on her feet and not staying in one spot for too long, she quickly moved back into blocking position each time she threw any attack of her own. Unlike her opponent who was stronger, she couldn’t afford to just eat blows. No, the energy from them either had to be lessened and redirected to places where they would be less painful, by making them land a certain way, or they had to be avoided entirely.

And Nico was doing a good job of accomplishing those two tasks and perplexing her enemy.

“When are you going to do something?” the spirit across from her asked, a smirk on her face. She was indeed confused that Nico wasn’t attacking, but she wasn’t complaining either. She was just waiting for the one opening it would take to deliver the finishing blow.

“Soon enough.”

Nico ducked as soon as she made her reply, slipping to the right and getting on the outside of her opponent. The one across from her, the spirit who was also clad in black but was considerably more athletic, with a pair of demonic horns sprouting from her head, her skin also standing out because of the red hue. By all means, Nico should have been losing to an opponent like this. But she knew the right things to focus on. She’d been in this spot before, and had experience her opponent didn’t.

Which was what she based her attack around.

She slipped to the side of a kick and struck out with a hard counter of her own, a hard crack echoing through the immediate area as her shin slammed against the side of the knee of the opponent, dropping her when she went off balance. Before two seconds could even go by, Nico was already on top of her opponent and had her by the collar, raising her hand to deliver a punch to the face but stopping once her opponent stopped struggling. It had been a long spar, and yet it had been ended by her within a couple of seconds once the right window opened up.

“If that was a real fight, I’d have a weapon in hand and it would have came down on your neck,” Nico warned, brushing herself off as she released the demon’s collar and sat up.

“If we were fighting with weapons I’m sure you wouldn’t have gotten that advantageous position in the first place,” the demon remarked, rolling her eyes while Nico stood up off of her.

Nico extended her hand once she was up, leaning against the ropes while holding her own side. She hadn’t realized it in the moment but they hurt more than she thought. Turns out the adrenaline had been pretty good at suppressing it during the fight, but now some of the pain was starting to come out. “Hey, I’m not saying it to pick on you. I’m saying it because if you don’t run into things like that out here, you aren’t going to realize them when it’s time for a real fight. Don’t make the same mistake again… And you’re still making progress. I used to kick your ass every time, you know.”

The demon took her hand, pulling herself up and also leaning against the ropes, reaching down to rub the side of her knee where she had just been struck. “You still tend to do that pretty often, even when it seems like I’m winning…”

Nico shrugged. She slid between the ropes and climbed out of the ring, reaching for the towel she had placed next to it and patting herself down with it, including her arms that were exposed from wearing a black tank top to train in. “You have the bravery of a real hero, Night. Just not the smarts of one. Keep working on that and I’m sure you’ll find yourself doing much better against me,” she stated.

Lucas Deccan & Adrial Elysium | Mittelstadt Academy

Adrial didn't mind sharing a room, dropping her large duffle bag on the ground before finally unfurling her large wings. Staring at the back of Lucas', who was removing the contents of his own bag, she ran one down his back causing him to writhe and jump away. It was at the behest of him that Adrial had to stuff her wings onto the bus in the first place, an uncomfortable experience she'd pay him back for. While the two certainly spent plenty of time together, sharing a room would be a first; Lucas likely realising he'd have a hard time keeping Adrial in check. Prior to leaving Adrial expressed that she wanted to speak with one of the instructors, changing the subject whenever Lucas questioned further.

Finishing up quickly, the two decided on following Endriel to check out the academy's other facilities. The training center interested Adrial... Lucas, not so much. He wasn't exactly sure what his Spirit wanted to do so he couldn't help but feel anxious. With hurried steps Adrial suddenly jogged ahead of Lucas, going directly passed Endriel who had just opened the complex door, "Oh shit, she isn't going to..." thought Lucas, spotting the woman who had just exited the ring. It was Niko Lucius, a renowned metal mage that could handle herself even without a Spirit.

As Adrial neared the instructor her dense metal suitcase liquified, running over her body to form her usual armour, the handle elongating into the form of a trident and her wings fanning out her wings. Stepping closer she pointed her weapon towards Niko and calmly spoke, "Excuse my disrespect, I'm Adrial, also a metal mage and... uhh," she paused, noticing the woman had just completed a round of arduous sparring. Lowering her trident, Adrial uncharacteristically stuttered out the rest, "Y-You see, I was going to c-challenge you over whose metal magic was better... which I know sounds rather childish..." she stopped, looking away awkwardly and swirling the end of her trident in little circles.

With an audible slap Lucas facepalmed, berating himself for not noticing earlier, "Of course she'd try this," he thought, making his way over to the two Lucas tried to clear things up, "I apologise for my Spirit's strange actions, she was just a little bit too excited over the prospect of challenging you. We'll just come back another time seeing as you've just finished up."

Nev Hurn
Mittelstadt Academy

Nev was already pretty much set in his room within the first few minutes of arriving at the Academy, his military discipline was rather handy when prepping a room that you would be sleeping in for the next four years. Wearing his Navy fatigues, anyone could tell that Nev was in the service for a time, and the name tag on his right breast pocket provided relatively easy identification for people who didn't know him. Of course, Nev did have regular clothes, but he always found his fatigues to be comfier than anything else. Of course, he wasn't the only one sharing the room.

"Man, this room is so drab, not enough color in my opinion..." A voice came behind him, one that he was all to familiar with. He turned and confirmed his suspicion that his spirit was tagging along, snow white hair, modest clothing, and a face as innocent as a child's, but he knew better.

"Well it's all ok with me Jani, and I don't plan on changing anything too much, I'd rather not waste the time rearranging everything." He remarked, giving her a cocked eyebrow, a reaction that did annoy the spirit a smidge. But she knew how to get what she wanted, and started to pout.

"You meanie, I don't wanna have to spend every morning looking at these boring colors. Let's just change the colors a little, pretty pretty please?" She said, changing her voice to be more childlike, and letting her magic work into him. Nev knew what she was doing, but her voice was a bit hard to resist, nonetheless, he had to if he was to have enough time to check out the rest of the Academy.

"Ugh, I'll think about it, but keep whining about it and I'll paint it all black." Nev replied, prompting a squeal from Jani as she danced around. While she was busy doing that Nev slipped away, now wanting to find his way around, putting on a pair of sunglasses that, within seconds, shifted its shape into that of a pair of wire sunglasses, minus the lenses. At an efficient pace, Nev was able to make his way to the training center. Though everyone else was watching someone, so he wandered his way to the firing range, now that was some good fun.

Archie and The Witch King | Mittlerstadt Academy Grounds

"Isn't this room, like, drab and ugly and boring and stuff? I'm thinking of giving it a splash of paint here and there, perhaps some murals over there. This place could use some more amenities, like a jacuzzi, yeah? Or maybe a bigger TV and a PS4 and a gaming PC, yeah?"

"I believe I know what your planned course of action is, Master Archie, and I must advise against it. You had to pay an immense amount of money just to placate that Parisian hotel's management, after all. And you were nearly taken to court after that last stint of yours in New York..."

Archie and The Witch King, having arrived on their assigned room, were currently unpacking the belongings they had brought to Mittlerstadt. Though Witch King actually had no luggage of his own, having all of his possessions within his person, Archie had brought 4 duffel bags and a massive suitcase to Mittlerstadt Academy, most of which contained either expensive designer clothing or various magical trinkets of dubious value. It also contained various gadgets, Archie's weapons, and several books. Much to Witch King's annoyance, Archie had insisted on bringing all of these to the Academy instead of selling them, and now they had a cramped room full of knick-knacks and other stuff.

And worst of all, Archie had been doing nothing to help. His master, instead of unpacking his own stuff, had basically decided to plan out his "preferred designs" for the room, most of which were very terrible ideas. Though Witch King had already gotten used to his master's laziness, he wanted the young boy to do more. And thus, an idea formed in his head.

"Master Archie, perhaps instead of lounging about, you would care to go instead to the training center Endriel had mentioned? I know of its location; I sighted it when we were on our way here."

"WiKi, that is a very incredible idea! Lead the way!"

"Master Archie, perhaps you would go there yourself? As you can see, I still have not finished unpacking."

"Oh, forget about the stuff for now, WiKi! Take me there already!"

The Witch King, knowing he could not change his mage's mind now, decided to just go along with it. He was thinking of doing some training anyway, but had thought it better to unpack first.

Intent on training, the mage and Spirit duo then made their way towards the training center, where apparently a sparring session had just ended. A woman and her Spirit stood inside one of the nearby training rings, surrounded by a small crowd of onlookers.

Archie didn't care about that, though. He was looking for something else.

"Hey, instructor! Is there a swimming pool around here? Or a large body of water like a pond or a lake or something?", he yelled towards the woman in the ring, waving his hands around. He didn't actually know whether or not she was an instructor, but he thought it better to call her that to avoid provoking her. He wasn't in the mood for a scolding right now.

Nico Lucius

Nico took a good look at the spirit approaching her, but she didn’t back away even though she had just finished training and even though the master was apologizing for the actions of his spirit. She didn’t mind, really. She’d certainly been more brash when she was younger and she hadn’t shied away from challenging others in situations like this. And yet, at the same time, she knew it would be a bit of a pointless challenge if they did it. While metal magic was supposedly her forte, it also… Wasn’t.

“She’s fine. But I have to say that a challenge wouldn’t have much of a point right now. We already know which one of us would be stronger and believe it or not, it wouldn’t be me. I’m not saying I’m weak, actually. Just ask Night here about that,” she started, gesturing to the spirit who was climbing out of the ring. “But I’ve never been one for raw power. I might not be able to say I have the best metal magic per say, I just know how to use it well.”

She shrugged casually, reaching for a bottle next to the ring and taking a sip of water. “That, and I tend not to rely on magic itself too much. I guess I’m just weird like that, or in the wrong place, but I think mages rely too much on well, being mages. There’s more ways than just spells to stop a vampire or a demon, after all,” she continued. “Or that could just be my outlook because I don’t have a spirit. Hard to rely on magic when any mage and spirit pair can easily get one over on you.”

She looked to the one that had just asked her a question. Archie, she thought his name was. She had read through the files for the incoming students but hadn’t matched every name fully to every face just yet. That’d come in time. “Yeah, in another building. Check for the long one around here, it’s not far I believe. Although I have to say, swimming isn’t going to get you very far when your teammates are sparring or lifting weights.”

The spirit behind her moved to slip an arm around her shoulder, something that Nico ducked away from easily. “Don’t pay too much mind to her, she just likes to rain on parades-” Night started, before Nico moved with lightning precision to put her into a headlock.

“What? I’m the one around here that tells you all the things that Caine doesn’t want to…”
