The Socioeconomic Development Index (SEDI)
To accommodate all conceptions of development, in the present essay a new indicator is proposed, the SEDI (Socioeconomic Development Index), which measures the degree of development of societies and territories considering alternative variables, such as the number of network users. social, environmental welfare, happiness, the cost of living, the export of high technology products ... etc.
Through the evaluation of the countries with the SEDI, results appear that reflect that the world is not polarized between a developed Center and an underdeveloped periphery, but that the nuances are much more complex, and the gap between degrees of development is not so great . Everything depends on what conception we use of the term 'development'.
In addition to the differentiation between traditional and alternative indicators, it is necessary to remember that in this proposal for a new index, two dimensions are being managed: social and economic. In this sense we also try to keep both parties balanced, and use the same number of variables that describe the social dimension and the economic dimension. Thus, and after a process of reflection that is reflected in the explanations that accompany the following section, we have decided that the SEDI will consist of eight indicators or variables, which will try to describe the development from a different perspective to the other indicators that are used nowadays.
