President Wengu dead, Party Leader Nikolai Varbanov to assume Presidency.

President Wengu was declared dead today after a faulty gas line at his Vinhinese estate exploded, destroying the entire property. The Asterian Government is currently not looking for reimbursement from the Vinhinese government. While citizens of Asteria mourn his loss, the ADK has been swift and emotionless in its replacement of the president. Acting President Nikolai Varbanov, and Party Leader of the ADK, will be sworn into office later today at 5:30 PM. The decision was unanimously decided by the Executive Council of the ADK. While some citizens are outraged at the fact that the government has not yet released a motion for the mourning of President Wengu, others have rejoiced that the charismatic Varbanov has taken office. We can only wait and see what happens next. We here at The Athens News mourn the late President's loss deeply, and we give condolences to the family.

EC Dispatch on the energy production clause in the EC-Landersvich Trade Agreement

Wishing to clarify the contents of the second Landersvich-EC bilateral trade agreement with regards to energy production, the EC exercises it's right to call an Imperial Diet under the first EC-Landersvich agreement and does so. To discuss the contents of the second EC-Landersvich trade agreement. While Landersvich seems to claim that the agreement gives them the exclusive right to supply energy to the EC, this is hotly denied by all of the EC’s members. Songjiang F-16 Pilot in Hot Water Over Noodles







Songjiang Republican Air-force Pilot Lt. Su Tai has reputedly been placed on report for using military assets to smuggle food from Hong Kong into the Songjiang Mainland without paying the extra sales taxes. According to prosecutors they have evidence that the pilot has made at least 12 trips transporting at least 10 boxes of noodles at a time were he then gave them to his cousin who sold them at his noodle shop at lower prices than other noodle shops could afford.
Authorities claim they were tipped off after a photo of Lt. Su Tai's plane surfaced with a box of noodles in the cockpit window, initially it was a safety investigation but it was soon discovered that the pilot was carrying more noodles per trip than he could possibly need for himself.
The exact ammount of noodles he smuggled into Songjiang without paying proper taxes is unknown at this point and Lt. Su Tai is still on active duty pending completion of his investigation. Military officials state he will likely be forced to pay the back taxes, and have his flight status suspended for 6 months as punishment but no official criminal charges will be pursued. Non military authorities do not seem to be happy with this stating he should be made an example of.

As many know, Yahel has seen a large increase in immigration. Terrorist Attack at Frijestad International Airport




Police Preparing to Take Down Suspects



A few minutes ago, Frijestad International Airport was bombed and shot up by members of the notorious Populist Party. According to the one suspect who was captured alive, they were attempting to murder Stiaan Kotze, a core member of the Minority Advancement Movement, and a Tumbu white. Police estimates say that between 10-30 people were injured, and 4 confirmed dead. Stiaan Kotze survived the attack, however, he is in critical condition, his back being filled with shrapnel from the bomb. The weapons used in the attack were 1911 pistols, which, although illegal to have without a valid license, are easy to get illegally, as well as an improvised bomb, with nails in it, which flew out from the bomb and hit civilians, acting as shrapnel. The act was perpetrated by 5 men, one dead by suicide bombing, and another 3 killed by police. The last suspect was apprehended after failing to commit suicide. Mayor Joseph Sahana says that this is a sad day for all of Tumbuland, and wishes all victims of this attack his condolences.

President Varbanov increases taxes on poor, institutes mandatory public work programs.

"The most difficult choices require the strongest wills.", said President Varbanov earlier in a speech this morning. Our wonderful leader loves all of us, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the betterment of the country. Therefore, our glorious leader has income taxes by 5-10% varying on the income of citizens, and it mainly affects the middle and lower class. We understand that while this may make our lives difficult, it will go in turn to fund the wonderful social services that our gracious leaders work hard to maintain for us. The elite remains to enjoy low taxes, as they are symbols of strength and prosperity for all Asterian citizens. Please contact your nearest District Office to find more details about what the tax increase may mean for you.

The Government has also initiated what some economists are calling "Asteria's Five-Year Plan." Just as the citizens tithe to the government, the government must tithe to the citizens. Therefore, it is now mandatory for all homeless and extreme low-income citizens to work on public works projects, building anything from power stations to housing to infrastructure. Workers will receive temporary housing at designated District locations until they receive enough money to pay rent. Rumors have been spread at a salary up to $1,000, a life-changing amount for many of our citizens. We are glad to see that President Varbanov cares so much about our glorious country of Asteria. APSIA Economic Council Begins Full Scale Investigation Against HLR


Shortly after the Landersvich Conglomerate, HLR, diverted funds from a handful of known international criminals and handed them over to the AEP (of which every leader and most top ranking officials are also on the APSIAEC dossier), the economic council initiated a full scale investigation into HLR. Rubber Rafts in Raging Waters

As the fishing industry gradualy upscales, people are left with a nagging question: "What the hell is up with these boats?".

Commercial fishing has seen much growth since 1990, but this kind of growth hasn't come without its own problems. One visit to a local dock and you will see cutting edge top of the line fishing vessels, alongside cobbled together junker boats. The kicker, they will be working for the same company. No laws have been put into place regulating how modern a commercial fishing vessel must be, so many fishers joining a new team, or organized company, simply just keep their old out of date ships. Some companies have even offered higher wages for those who bring their own boats along with them (Labelled BYOB, bring your own boat). The people are split on this issue. Some say this is due to the lack of laws governing the market, while others chalk it up to economic inequality between the classes. The Yaheli fishing union has stated that it will be looking to the international market to secure modern vessels to supply to the people and modernize the scene.

Regional Congress of Carib passes "Drug Act of 1993"
In a controversial move, Administrator Sáenz of Carib pushed through the "Drug Act of 1993" through the Caribbean Regional Congress. While the decision was fairly divisive, Sáenz and his team are adamant about the positive effects this Act will bring to the Caribbean.

The Drug Act of 1993 officially legalises marijuana and unofficially promotes the growth of the Caribbean's marijuana industry. To be more specific about what this means for the average citizen, any citizen over the age of 17 may possess any quantity of cannabis ("within reason" as taken from the Regional Congress' official report) and any citizen older than 18 can apply for a Cannabis License, which allows them to grow marijuana in their own homes or as a business venture.

In addition to the legalisation of marijuana, forms of ecstasy were legalised though only for possession, meaning those manufacturing ecstasy will receive a fine or possibly jail time, depending on the size of the operation.

Sáenz has come under fire for wanting to turn Carib into, in the words of Political Rival Lucas de la Cavallería, "A drug-addled, lazy, crime ridden state ... If we're considering what else Sáenz has said about his vision for Carib, our state is truly doomed."

I am glad to announce that our meeting with American Federation military officers has produced positive results. The American Federation has agreed to send an initial force of 1,000 troops and slowly bolster the force over a period of time. This shall serve as a deterrent force to keep Niagara from interfering in the coup under fear of starting a war with the American Federation. Along with this, we have secured plans with a few top Army staff that should grant us roughly 75% of the Army to assist in toppling the tyrannical regime. After the recent visit from Queen Mary and the first ever Governor race going on in the Caribbean the economy has been awoken! Sugar and Coffee farming have continued to rise over the years but with the recent publicity other markets have been awakened. The cruise line Viver Bien which operates 3 ships have announced a 160% jump in bookings for the coming months. With the new money they plan on opening two more ships. One will be focused in the Caribbean while the Second will port in the Alician homeland, travel to the Alician resorts in Landersvich, and possibly tour the islands of Asteria. Bair Jolasnaro has also began construction of a new store in Puerto Rico. The store will be staffed and operating by February 20th. Congresswomen Tejador has recently dropped to 75% in the polls and Governor Espina has risen to 25% after recent economic gains. Tejador is still holding her comfortable lead.

Recent allegations from the APSIA economic council have stated HLR has been harboring the money for warlords, corrupt officials, terrorist and human rights abusers. Economic Councils Investigation into HLR

An HLR press release has updated the public, and the economic council, on their stance. The release indicates that the company, through private investigations, have found more funds and clients who are to be considered undesirable. The assets of the clientele have been frozen and the funds available seized. The amount of liquid assets seized is equivalent to 4.2bn Marks. Other assets, which equate to 42bn are tied up in bonds and funds on the ILE and ISEx; with a mean age of maturity of 15 years. HLRs leading council has announced the creation of the International Anti-Terrorism Fund (IATF). The funds will be managed by HLR and will be available to the APSIA. The fund will start with the 4.2bn marks seized, and the 42bn marks (present value) when the maturity date is reached. The fund will grow at the rate of the growth on the ILE - almost like a retirement account. Other nations may contribute to the fund - with the main focus of eliminating terrorist activities.

HLR council also stated that, "We are willing to work with the APSIA on the investigation pertaining to HLR - since no law has been broken, there is nothing HLR is concerned about; that being said, with hundreds of trillions of dollars in transactions a year, the investigation will take up a majority of the Economic councils time and resources for the coming years. Perhaps it would be more beneficial to solve the issue of terrorism - but what do I know." Fred Weasel also stated that "HLR is willing to help create a lasting solution to the issue - however, the company will not be punished for crimes it has not committed; we also ask, that at the conclusion of the investigation, the APSIA apologize for libel against HLR - which has caused PR and image issues."

The Ministry of Security has released a report detailing crime within Pavlovsk, along with a detailed list of how individual cities within the nation rank in terms of safety. The republic with the biggest decrease in crime has been Rybinsk, and the one with the largest increase has been the Ukrainian FR (likely due to the extension of the republic's borders in the recent past). Overall, minor misdemeanor have decreased across the nation. This is thought to be in large part due to the sharp decrease in restrictions on political speech and action, leading to far less arrests tied to political issues. However, major felonies such as murder and grand theft have seen an increase overall. The Ministry of Security states in the report that major felonies have seen an increased particularly related to organized crime.

Almaty was ranked as the most dangerous large city in Pavlovsk to live in, partially due to activity from Persian non-state militias active near the area. However, the data does not take the recent decrease in Persian militia activity into account. Crime experts speculate that Vladivostok to be the most dangerous city within Pavlovsk. The safest city in Pavlovsk according to the report is Daugava, with Helsinki and Rykovograd coming in close behind. Chekhov ranks in the 73rd percentile (with 100 being the safest).

Hong Kong Bank and Shanghai Bank Merge To Become The Hong-Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation







The Politburo of Songjiang and the Corporate Council of Hong-Kong approved the massive merger of The Bank of Hong Kong and The Central Bank of Shanghai. This will give the Hong-Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation the ability to print money in both Songjiang and in Hong-Kong as the The Central Bank of Shanghai served as the mint for Songjiang.
The HSBC has announced along with this that changes in Songjiang and Hong Kong currency will be following this merger and a likely union of currency will take place making trade between the mainland and Hong-Kong easier.
Along with this merger the HSBC has announced opening 100 new branches across Yahel over the next 3 months. Efforts to do the same in Pavlovsk are still ongoing.
