YN’s English

Postby Subhurbia » Tue Apr 30, 2019 11:24 pm

This is an addition to a couple of other threads involving English dialects.
Pick which choice YN’s citizens use in their English. If YN has multiple different English dialects, pick which one is the most dominant. If they’re is no dominant choice of speech, select more than one option if you want to. If YN’s people don’t use any pronunciation, vocabulary, or spelling, specify what they do use on the ‘other’ choice.

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English?

Not really. Andocarian English is very much like General American English, but with a different, more practical or standard vocabulary, and very slight differences in spelling, grammar, and pronunciation. In addition, Andocarians have a stronger tendency to use "Advanced English" in their everyday speech. For examples:

Instead of "Nice to meet you.", they say "Pleased to meet you."

Instead of "Just a minute", they say "One moment please."

Instead of saying, but/and, they say "however" and "In addition"

Instead of 'also', they say 'moreover'

Instead of saying 'I think', they say 'In my opinion'

Instead of saying "I'm listening", they're more likely to say "I'm all ears"

Instead of saying "I don't know", they're more likely to say "It beats me"

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English? Due to our nation's other official languages being Japanese and Russian, there are many loanwords from those two languages in Gandoorese English that are not used in other variants. (Indeed when it comes to Japanese, there are many examples of wasei-eigo [that is, Japanese-made English] terms that have been adopted into standard English, the aforementioned toire is one example with some other examples including: mansion for an apartment, spats for tights, soft cream for soft-serve ice cream, and CM for television commercial)

Approximately a third of all Hansdeltanians pronounce words beginning with "J" like "zh" or "Y." For example, "juice" can be pronounced as "zhuice" (like the French name Jacques) or "yoose", though the "Y" pronunciation is more common with names.

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English?

Xeloncaresian English is very close to British English in terms of spelling, some vocabulary, some pronunciation, and grammar. The Standard Xeloncaresian Dialect is known as Universal Xeloncaresian English, which is widespread across the nation. There are numerous English dialects, but these come from ethnic enclaves formed by immigrant communities. Xeloncaresian English uses basic, common vocabulary used throughout all dialects of English, plus vocabulary words used in both American and British English, such as fuel, and soft drink. Xeloncaresian English vocabulary is for most part very basic and straightforward and the dialect itself lacks color and character, due to the fact that it is meant to unify all enclave dialects in the nation. The pronunciation taught in schools mixes both American and British pronunciation.

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English?
After centuries of isolation following the Great Cataclysm, English in America split into many different dialects that, while mutually intelligible with other English speakers, can barely be called the same language anymore. American Standard, more commonly referred to simply as American, is the most commonly spoken dialect and is often used as a lingua franca along with Latin. American is often called Vulgar English as it's grammatical structure and spelling are, in some aspects, much different than the common form of English spoken in the U.S. prior to the Great Cataclysm. Pre-Cataclysm English, known as Classical English or Old World English, is still taught, but only among the clergy and nobility. While both the clergy and nobility use Latin and not English to communicate, knowledge in Classical English is necessary to study and interpret ancient American holy texts such as the Declaration of Independence or Constitution.

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English?

Words such as status and process are pronounced as "stay-tus" and "pro-cess" respectively. Though Veridys was at one point a colony and later a Dominion of Britain, the accent of its people sounds closer to that of American/Canadian English.
“The great revolution in the history of man, past, present and future, is the revolution
of those determined to be free.”

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English? Jacrainese English (informal English) often use subject-verb-object grammatical structure, similar to American Sign Language. In addition the spelling is uniquely distinct, having a tendency to often be spelled based on how they sound.

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English? Carradonian English is heavily British influenced in many ways including vocabulary. The standard accent however sounds like a mixture of South England Accent and Nova Scotian Accent.

Are there any special distinct characteristics about YN's English?
Not really. We tend to use posh words and extended words to make our sentences sound more interesting and less boring, as we may say. Also, we spell 'color' 'colour'. If ever you have a word that has 'or' somewhere within it, apart from or, it will likely have the letter 'u' after the 'o'.
