It's a shame. Any particular reason why they're mad?

In any case... I can hardly see mandatory vaccination for children as a controversial issue. Even if one accepts that one has the right to do with one's body as they please, irrespective of the impact on public health, doing with someone else's body what you please is another issue entirely. Surely children deserve the best decision to be made for them, regardless of who is making it. It's just that parents are most often the most familiar with their particular child and what is best for them. In this situation, though... refusing to vaccinate your children kind of proves a parent's incapability of making the right decision.

I don't know about mandatory adult vaccinations, though. If there's anything that might justify it, it would definitely be the public health impact, at least imo.

This is why we need mandatory vaccinations.

I'm speculating a lot here.

There's pretty much no other reason for it to occur.

If it turns out that it was just some unlucky immunocompromised people or people allergic to the vaccine, they should've been protected by herd immunity, whose loss can be pinned on anti-vaxxers.

I'll need to ask for a source.

Title is too long, so here it is:

Short extract:
AS HUNDREDS ARE QUARANTINED FOR MEASLES IN CALIFORNIA, DONALD TRUMP URGES AMERICANS TO GET VACCINATED
With a record number of measles cases reported across in the United States, the outbreak doesn't show signs of letting up just yet.

Earlier this week, UCLA and California State University at Los Angeles announced that hundreds of students, faculty and staff have been placed under a mandatory quarantine after two students, one at each university, contracted the virus and attended classes on their respective campuses.

At UCLA, the student reportedly entered two buildings, Franz Hall and Boelter Hall, over a three-day period to attend classes. The university learned of the measles case on Monday and began precautionary measures, CNN reported.

"Upon learning of this incident, UCLA immediately identified and notified more than 500 students, faculty and staff with whom the student may have come into contact or who may have otherwise been exposed," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block Block said in a statement. "They were also provided with detailed information about treatment and prevention."

As of Friday, the school told CNN that approximately 50 people were still under quarantine and would remain there until they could provide proof of vaccination or until the 21 day isolation period has expired. Only one student involved in the quarantine lives on campus and arrangements had been made to remove the individual from the dormitory, though UCLA did not give specifics of those arrangements to CNN.

-----

Even President Trump — who has previously expressed anti-vaccination sentiments — urged Americans to be vaccinated, telling reporters Friday, "The vaccinations are so important. This is really going around now. They have to get their shots.”

Primary source (where I got it from): https://www.newsweek.com/hundreds-are-q ... et-1407536

Other sources:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa- ... SKCN1S12V8
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/26/us/m ... ntine.html
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/measles-ou ... arantined/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYCA_gNYhFc
https://edition.cnn.com/2019/04/26/poli ... fFJFwZsnhk

So basically from the sources, two universities were put under mandatory quarantine for measles, and in turn, Donald Trump has urged the Americans to get vaccinated. Last source link talked about Donald Trump saying this.

Do you think the quarantines are a step in the right direction?

Personally to me, this kind of thing should NOT have happened in the first place. I would like to blame the anti-vaccination movement, who probably has once again screwed things up for everyone, though... I'm not sure, you know? I admit, I have went too far in calling them bioterrorists, or any of those words, but at the same time, I will call them a menace. The menacing movement that should not have existed in the first place.

I am personally in for quarantines and more education. No matter how much they ignore science, they can only be thwarted with real talk and MORE science. You know the saying "Blind them with Science"?

Here's to hoping that the number of measles cases decline and eventually, measles can go back to the grave it once occupied.

EDIT: I forgot to say it before, but if you're in California, please do be careful!

I'm speculating a lot here.

It's practically the only reason I can think of. This wouldn't have happened if the individuals were vaccinated.

In the UK, where similar problems are occurring, there has been speculation that because measles had almost been eradicated completely some people got overconfident and simply decided that vaccinating their children against it was no longer necessary...

2010s is the decade where technophobia became big and dangerous. Refusing to vaccinate, believing the earth is flat, believing that smartphones and social media are causing all the ills in societies, refusing to believe climate change is real, even believing that wi-fi is somehow killing you. All sorts of science denialism and technology-related phobias. Let's make the 2020s the decade where people came to their senses and started listening to the experts again.

To answer OP, a step to the right direction would be criminalizing anti-vax movements. They are a danger to the public and are committing child abuse when refusing to vaccinate their children. Discouraging others from using life-saving vaccines should be illegal.

I'm supportive of mandatory vaccinations. Executions of anti-vaxxers though would create myrters, and be a grotesque abuse of state power.

Executing anti-vaxxers will only make them immune to further executions.

Fucking Anti Vaxxers what will it take to get it through to them that vaccines are safe and not vaccinating your children for reasons other than legit medical reasons is stupid and harmful? I think the best solution is to one begin deplatforming anti vaxxers and promoting actual facts about vaccines as much as possible. We also make vaccines mandatory with exemptions only given for medical reasons and fines for those who do not comply.

We also do not let unvaccinated people into schools and if a child gets sick we fine the parents with more fines if that kids infects anyone else. And if it is a serious illness we seize the child and vaccinate and treat them while charging the parents with neglect and evaluating how fit they are to be parents. And if in the worse case scenario a child dies because they were not vaccinated we charge the parents with manslaughter and neglect.

Fucking finally Trump changes his mind and urges people to get vaccinated.

Still hurts that he did support the anti vaccine movement back in his campaign, creating the illusion of credibility for them.

Anyway, free mandatory vaccinations for everyone. Anti vaxxers are traitors to all mankind as is the rest of there anti science ilk.

Maybe there ought to be a public health campaign targeted towards newly turned 18 year olds. "Did you have stupid fucking parents who didn't vaccinate you, it's not too late, get vaccinated!" Put it on MTV with a trendy dubstep song about how it sucks to have measles.

Meanwhile Pakistan has halted its polio vaccination drive after a vaccination worker was shot dead. The third death linked to the campaign this week. Fake news spread on social media and hardline Islamists claiming the vaccination teams are cover for western spies are blamed for the hostility.

We don't know much yet, but most likely the CDC, as they specialize far more in epidemiology and containing outbreaks of hazardous illnesses than a university would.

How about we just make vaccinations mandatory?????

And if someone refuses, they get jailed (or fined) and the kids go live with the other parent of foster until the parent is out of jail and ready to get vaccinated

Or you could just vaccinate the kids and let the whole family get on with their lives. Throwing people in jail does not improve anything.

I think the solution is we send the anti vaxxers to California and call it the vaccine free state.

Besides the ignorance of anti-vaxxers, these types of situations are also strong cases for why it's good to have controlled and regulated borders. Making sure people are entering your country legally, and then making sure those people are also vaccinated. I think we could all agree vaccinations for immigrants at controlled points of entry would be a positive and help mitigate the damage, right?
