Which, in my opinion, would be disappointing. I always figured that part of the tragic irony of the GoT setting was how the various noble houses simply couldn't stop with their petty turf wars and dynastic squabbles despite repeated and unmistaken warnings that the big, supernatural threat was slowly but inevitably descending upon the world over the course of seven seasons. If it turns out that the mortals kick said threat's ass in 1-2 episodes and simply continue with the dynastic squabbles, it would kinda ruin the impression.

Also, it simply looks too much by the numbers. There's got to be some shocking, game-changing twist coming up, even if it's an illogical one (as if that would stop D&D).

I kind of agree and kind of disagree. You're right about the tragedy of it, but I also think the central question has always been "How can we improve this shitty, war-torn world?", so it makes sense to wrap that up last.

Maybe they just need more episodes for the undead plotline.

I dislike the undead plot line. However, I can see that there HAS to be some kind of epic battle now with major characters lost and the realm transformed from it so that it all pays off in some way (hopefully that's what happens in Episode 3, done and over with in a longer than usual episode).

However, I too, would rather half of the season re-focused on the politics and the dynasty wars and the scheming. Hopefully with a re-affirmation of the importance of the Game.

So with regards to the undead plot line I would be very disappointed if it was just wrapped up in episode 3 just like that. My theory is that the living will lose Winterfell and flea to King´s landing to try and convince Cersi to help which she refuses. Then we have some political scheming to try and oust her to deliver the message that humanity has problems uniting even when major threats are on the horizon. These schemes would fail but when all hopes seems lost the Lannister armies realizing the threat and under the command of Jamie revolt against Cersi and she is killed by Jamie.

Then the living set a trap in Kings landing after evacuating it by luring the dead in and using all of the wildfire there and the dragons if they are still alive to set the city on fire killing the Night King and the white walkers along with Bran who was used to lure in the Night King and maybe some other major characters and the Iron Throne is destroyed in the blaze.

In the aftermath the remaining living realize that the current system does not work and almost led them to ruin. So they set up a new system maybe something like the Roman Republic´s systems or something like that to show the message that humanity can come together and work together for the greater good it just may take some effort to get it to happen.

I feel like that would be a good end to the story.
I do be tired

Except why would Cersei allow them inside KL at all only to later say (“I’m not working with you anymore”); furthermore, she already pulled the "I'm pretending to work with you but I'm not REALLY" schtick once, it would get redundant (as would a double betrayal from Jaime Lannister)

Wouldn’t she just attack what’s left of the alliance after their defeat/loss at Winterfell with the Golden Company and Lannister army?

The problem I see with this scenario - the living retreat to KL and try to make their stand there - is that it's virtually at the other end of Westeros. By the time the AotD arrives at KL, it would have swollen to such massive proportions - The population of the Riverlands probably numbers in the millions, despite all the war crap they've been through - that any kind of resistance would seem futile anyway.
I earlier suggested that the NK might have deceived the defenders of Winterfell by flying over to KL to launch a surprise attack there away from his army but on second thought, that seems like an absurd idea and out-of-character for him. These human nations and their rulers mean nothing to him. He most likely neither knows nor cares who Cersei is.

It could be a purely strategic decision. If he knows that Winterfell has dragonglass, dragons, and is just generally prepared to fight the dead, it might make sense to go elsewhere and leave them to starve. We've been told multiple times about how KL has a huge population. Raising another undead army in the south before attacking Winterfell does seem prudent.

but it doesn't seem to be in sync with the tone set in episode 2 that a large, decisive battle is coming

I don't think we've seen the last of them. I mean, we still don't know who the Azhor Ahai is and the Great Other should probably be pissed at our girl Arya doing the NK dirty like that. I do hope D&D don't throw that part out of the window.

Damn, I'll savor that NK smirk.

Honestly super surprised at how many main characters lived, and how few non-main characters survived. There have gotta be, like, 100 soldiers left? 15 of which are named characters.

I was honestly disappointed with buildup to Arya killing the Night King. I wanted there to be more interaction between him and Bran, something that would've made the pay off of Arya killing him so rewarding. Now he's gone, with most of the major characters surviving despite the massive casualties, and I worry this is just going to turn into a morality play between the heroes who saved the world from the Night King and the incestuous bitch, her undead rapist bodyguard, her fratboy boyfriend, and a Maester reject.

Melisande was too good for us.
2289 A.D.
In the early 21st century Siberia was struck by a massive asteroid that brought untold devastation and the collapse of almost every government. An alien virus, capable of mutating its victims, was brought to Earth as well. Eastern Europe, Siberia, China and countless other regions fell to the mutant horde. Europe became a medieval landscape ruled by feudal lords. The Middle East unified into a single Sultanate over time and entered a golden age wherein they have learned to co-exist with mutants. The Americas, which have lost contact with the old world, have turned into a Mad Max hellhole.

The time has come to make yet another nation. You'll probably recognize me.

This episode was both amazing and underwhelming at the same time.
I don't know, I'm not a big fan of how Arya killed the Night King..a dagger? I don't know, just finishing the entire threat of the White Walkers here leaves a lot of things out, will we ever even find out what the White Walkers were, their purpose? And I'm not sure how Arya even fits in the whole Azor Ahai prophecy.
Probably if I would have been a show watcher only I would have completely loved it, and I do think that the episode was incredible overall, but from the perspective of the plot, the book reader in me is kinda disappointed.

....we know all of those already. (In the show at least) The Night King was a weapon created by the Children of the forest, to help them fight off The First Men.

True, but I would have loved to get a bit more information about what had happened in the previous Long Night. That's my bigger issue, considering what epic prophecies we had, Arya underhandedly stabbing the Night King with a dagger seems a little bit too.. simple?
I can't say that I was fully a fan of the idea of Jon killing the Night King, it would have been too obvious, but I was really hyped for the whole story of Azor Ahai having to kill a loved one, Lightbringer, everything.

MY DARLING BABY GHOST YOU SURVIVED (according to the episode 4 trailer)

Episode was really fun. Holding my breath during the entire ending, and Arya's whole stealth level at the library. Would have thought Jon would have been a little more useful but I guess the spotlight did have to go on to other characters. Arya FTW.

meh
Not enough people died. Simply based on what we saw, , Jamie, brienne, Sam and grey worm should all be dead.
The episode was to long. I understand why the lighting was done the way it was, but I would rather see what was going on.
