Yes and no. You don't need them, but they'll help for basic resources that you can't get from the ecumenopolis or ringworld (such as minerals).
And on a different topic, I just discovered a way to completely cheese the game: Machine Empire (just a basic ME), with Habitable Worlds and Primitive Civilizations set to 5x. You'll be absolutely swimming in planets because of your habitability buff, and you'll be able to roll over the entire galaxy (excluding Fallen Empires) by 2300. Administrative capacity is the only real issue, but because of all the tech you'll be getting from your tech-focused worlds, you'll be able to minimize the effects of being over admin cap and also increase admin cap through tech.

I apparently have the strongest fleet in my current game at 1.6k (which, considering how far into the game I am, is really bad by my own standards, which means its absolutely abysmal by everyone else's). I'm currently trying to build an L-gate quarantine system before opening up my L-gate.
Personally, I've always thought about playing full on Fanatic Purifiers with post-apocalyptic. Its freereal estateterraforming!

What civics are you running?
And I've long thought about running fanatic purifiers with Survivor, flavoring it as "our planet was almost destroyed by an alien invasion that we were only barely able to stop, so now that we're in space, we're going to make them pay". I think my next run might be either that or using Survivor and Shared Burdens to create the perfect Posadist utopia.

They did, (“Sons of Abraham”) it just doesnt really allow you to play as a theocracy still. CK2 focuses on dynasties... and the popes werent dynastic, save for a few bastard borns here and there.

Actually, as far as I remember, the popes in the early middle ages were quite dynastic, in a similar way to how merchant republics are represented in CK2. A few families of Rome vying for power in order to receive that sweet sweet tax on pilgrims. Wasn't until maybe the 12th century renaissance or a tad earlier that it became less secular and more influential outside Rome, but various dynasties continued to hold sway well into the actual renaissance.

Yeah, but they were all bastards because Popes were not allowed marry as head of religion. I do know that there were several dynasties, but they were all illegitimate at best. That’s atleast what I was told in history class.

I think I'll give them a try after my current game finishes; see if I can't rule Tibet as a Bön and then reform the faith into... something. Of course I'm a bit worried being right next China because Lord knows the Western Protectorate is OP as fuck.
Personally I avoid playing Tibetan rulers of that religion because it's a pet peeve of mine since Bön is just an extension of Tibetan Buddhism that pretends to be older than what it is. Rather than a separate religion which competes for the heart of Tibet in the medieval period. But PDX threw out a desire for historical accuracy a long time ago.
