a) Brief description of your nation:Summary:
b) What languages are spoken in your nation?:Sagio-Gershauy is the conglomeration of two nations, the Royal Duchy of Sagio and the Gershauy Democratic Union, in 1820 but as it stands today is effectively a monarchist state with a Congress in place to pass laws and attend to the smaller minutiae of a nation’s workings. Overall it stands as a stratified society with a distribution of royalty, nobility, and peasantry, though nobles often take up the form as landowners and business owners only and hold little power politically, save for the power they have in what they own, and as such are not any more capable in politics than a peasant who holds the same finances. Of course, a peasant who holds the same finances as a noble is doubtless going to be rare but it is as it is. A strong family culture is prevalent in Sagio-Gershauy with the idea that one protects their own being nearly universal.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Originating as two nations, the Royal Duchy of Sagio and the Gershauy Democratic Union, a rebellious power, in approximately 1820 the two nations would unite peacefully. At the time, Sagio had come under threat from the south and required the war materials of iron, sulfur, and oak which lay in abundance within Gershauy’s borders. Likewise, Gershauy had come under a great famine set by the advent of the Chronau Plague which devastated their livestock and required the foodstuffs of Sagio, her fish and wheat. The union was seen as likely a temporary one, one which would end once the two crises were over.
The neighbors of the Dual State, as it would come to be known, did not agree. They saw the union as a threat, a likely precursor to military buildup and invasion. With the Dual State’s population, resources, and a war fighting drive the end result could be devastating. They began to mass troops for a preemptive invasion if such a drive was confirmed, began to marshal up the reserves to hold ground, and deployed their various navies. Sagio-Gershauy, of course, found this, thought it would be the probable demonstrations for a preemptive invasion, and so drew-up the reserves and began conscription. The former dual government of Sagio-Gershauy fell away as there was a rapid integration. Voy Au Aum Zijiune The Fourth, Queen of Sagio at that time, was a time-tested leader despite her age of fifty-four and as such took control of both states. Marshall law was enacted, mandatory conscription began, and the Union Congress of Gershauy was temporarily suspended.
Who precisely fired first is of great debate for modern historians. What is known is that a naval invasion of Sagio commenced in 1823 while at the same time Gershauy invaded west. Large swathes of land were consumed as the enemy attempted to raise their levies and maneuver their reserves while Sagio attempted the same. What is certain is that the naval invasion would be pushed back to the sea as the Gershauyan invasion would be pushed back to only a dozen kilometers from the original border. A war of attrition would begin and last ten years until, finally, a tentative peace treaty was drawn up.
From that period on, the Dual State experienced gradually improving relations with her neighbors. A time of vicious war was nothing new after all and, as such, times passed on and on with the relations gradually improving. Relations with Ghant were especially warm, due to their nature to keep the status quo. Many advancements to come of war would visit Sagio-Gershauy only in the guise of peace, her profits coming at many another’s expense, though despite this the nation maintained a small but modern military. They were protected, period historians would say, by a vast web of treaties and promises with her neighbors. An attack on the Dual State would have been suicidal.
In 1922, this was proven to be false. A revolution began, funded in part by

d) What are the major religions among your population?: Roman Catholic

e) What role do you see your nation fulfilling within the region?:f) Briefly describe your nation’s military:
Standing as a non-democratic and rather elitist, militarist power I would see Sagio-Gershauy as being an antagonist to most issues, especially in regards to the security of both Nekulturnya and Drevstran and the situation in the Kalakoran Republic. In addition to this, a gradual shift into democracy might bring a good deal of internal strife and as such would possibly lead into a civil war or further authoritarianism.Total Manpower: ~1,000,000
Annual Total Military Budget: $118,137,000,000
Summary:---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manpower: ~400,000
Training:Trained in large unit tactics, forest operations, and urban combat environments, Dual State soldiers are some of the more creative when it comes to difficult problems. With a far less structured hierarchy than other nations, far less strict than one might assume, Sagio-Gershauy forces are flexible in their employment. While they are less capable in amphibious assaults and things of that nature, defensive warfare is something drilled as a temporary manner. When attacked, it is nearly natural instinct for a Dual State soldier to want to invade the enemy. The basis of the concept is to place larger enemies at a strategic disadvantage early in a conflict, to destabilize their supply routes and major population centers at home, and as such the ‘butcher and bolt’ approach is heavily encouraged. Damage towards an enemy at home will incentivize their forces to wish to instead engage you. While this plays into the hands of total envelopment theory, most strategists within the Dual State would insist that sufficient speed, tactical ability, and determination would allow forces to outpace any sort of envelopment before it might be complete.
Technology:The realization that a soldier and his equipment, vehicles, and weapon must be of an adequate if not more than adequate nature has not stood unnoticed by strategists in Sagio-Gershauy. As such, a soldier can expect to be equipped with an armored vest to prevent rifle caliber bullets at range, and a strong helmet. Night vision is prevalent throughout the Army, issued to squad leaders under normal operations and to specific units if night assaults are called on.
The standard rifle for Sagio-Gershauy soldiers is the M21 Assault Rifle firing the 7.62mm round. While heavier than contemporaries, it’s ability to penetrate cover, light armored vehicles, and technicals has lent it well towards the use of the weapon. Equipped with a scope and flash suppressor, the M21 can become an ersatz DMR able to engage medium range threats. Equipped with a C-Mag, 120 rounds, and a tripod or bipod it can expand into a possible SAW to support the movement of allied troops. The variable rate of fire in automatic from the standard 120 rounds a minute, considered slow but still providing for a heavy recoil against the shoulder up to 600 rounds, a blazing fast speed that most would find uncontrollable. Most soldiers keep their rifles at 200 rpm settings. The variable rate of fire is a manual method which takes up a good deal of time, up to two hours, and as such cannot at all be done on the fly. The M21 fires in semi-automatic, automatic, and three round bursts.
In terms of vehicles, the Dual State has a preference towards armored, mine resistant IFVs, often armed with a light automatic cannon, which are commonly but not always wheeled in nature. Infantry formations are equipped with this style of IFV due to the requirement that there be quite literally no safe place during war; the Army is expected to advance, after all. Trucks are not used as often, but can expect to find service in reserve and levied units. Tanks are likewise heavily armed, with a 120mm cannon, and armored to withstand heavy blasts by virtue of composite armor and a layer of depleted uranium. Their speed, while not amazing, is still adequate to keep up with the IFV components. All artillery within the Army is self-propelled, though this is often in the nature of a cannon on a heavy truck mounting or mounted on an IFV, and is often of a lighter nature due to this requirement.

4x 530mm fore torpedo tubes
Description:
22x aft SLBM VLSDesigned as the solution to Dual State self defense concerns in the question of a nuclear first strike, the --- class solves this problem and more. At 10,000 tons displacement submerged the vessel is capable of long range deterrence patrols for up to 60 days submerged, with interim periods consisting of 20 days for replenishment and training. Having been upgraded in 2001, the class has the quieting technology of the later Jesiotr class and as such continues to play a cornerstone role in the insurance of national security. A mediocre speed due to the size of her hull and an underperforming reactor plant relegates her to a lesser view in the eyes of foreign powers, however. Recently, the vessel is rumored to be capable of using her SLBM tubes to move small payload satellites into orbit.

Description:
16x fore/aft VLSFirst built in 2006, the Jeriostr class of SSN is a hunter-killer submarine with a secondary cruise missile capability. With superior speed to many others owing to a unique hull shape, advanced reactor system, and a single, specially shaped 7-bladed screw, she’s able to surpass on official accounts 30 knots while submerged. The class is also one of the more quiet in the world. With buffering and a large hull, at low speeds she is comparable to many SSBNs for her ability to remain undetected due to the ability to then use natural circulation to move coolant instead of pumps. Unfortunately this comes at the cost of size, with the submarine being twice as large as many contemporaries, and at higher speeds she becomes more comparable to the many other underwater craft in noise generation. The class has superb ice capabilities due to the hull strength as well as bow-mounted diving planes able to retract into the hull. The class remains as one of the most active overseas.

Description:
12x aft VLSLaunched first in 1987, the Piasek Lanca class is a valuable addition to the Dual State Navy. With a new hydroelectric drive the ship was capable of more stealthy operations than any other at the time of her introduction. While the vessel carried less torpedoes than other contemporaries, a new VLS system had been introduced in her with the ability to fire cruise missiles while partly submerged. The system was placed aft, nearly giving the vessel an SSBN’s appearance. In addition to this, she was capable of ‘mating’ with a dry shelter vehicle, allowing for the deployment of swimmers and special forces.

Description:The Kolec class was envisioned as a heavier submarine of 9,000 tons capable of long ranging operations without resupply or rearmament while in enemy waters. As such, the vast majority of her hull space is reserved for stores areas. Reloads are extensive as well. Due to this increased size, they were the comparably loud in regards to other vessels, lacking many of the buffering other submarines might otherwise have. Also, their large size prevents an appreciable pursuit speed without sacrificing stealth in addition to crew endurance issues, and as such the class has been relegated to sector patrol duties. It is rumored however that the class can launch autonomous underwater craft in order to provide for a better sonar picture.

With it’s blocky superstructure, long lines, supremely cluttered superstructure, and midsection hangar and platform the 23,000 ton vessel is most certainly not a common sight. With two modifications the former quad-arm launchers have been replaced by two VLS batteries forward and aft of the superstructure and platform. With nuclear propulsion in the form of two reactors, one of the first Dual State vessels to be fitted with such, they are capable of cruising at a comfortable 23 knots and sprint speeds of 29 knots, though have been determined to be incapable of exceeding 30 knots. Currently the warships are among the most powerful surface combatants, able in surface, air, and undersea warfare; her VLS batteries can be armed with a variety of ASCMs, ASROCs, and SAMs, while an expansive hangar allows for the carrying of four AEW/ASW helicopters. In addition to this, the massive surfaces of her superstructure allow for similarly massive radars, increasing range and accuracy.

It is most common for the vessels to be seen leading smaller battle groups as they are most often employed as a flagship vessel in a fleet.

Often used to ‘show the flag’, the class is notable for it’s lower superstructure and bridge construction with a more aft placement of the main antenna mast. Overall the vessel has experienced good service, holding a 27 knot sprint speed with a more common 16 knot speed for economical maneuvering. The vessels are fitted with diesel engines, uncommon in the Dual State Navy, due to their limited stores areas which makes such nuclear reactors uneconomical to fit.

At 3,000 tons displacement total, the xxx class was designed for performance in littoral operations in an anti submarine role, as well as the ability to perform river transits to the southern areas. With a shallow draft and relatively narrow hull, the vessel is often likened more to a corvette were it not for the heavier batteries she carries. However, due to this several drawbacks towards the design have been identified. They lack the necessary stores, crew comforts, and crew compliments required for long endurance maneuvers as well as the fuel range and economy. The vessels are highly unstable in rough seas owing to their narrow profiles, with the xxx having been nearly capsized in 1979. Lastly, the vessels lack the necessary engine power to be true interdictors in coastal operations.

Designed for rapid brown water operations, the C-990 class is a new, dynamic hydrofoil vessel of 2,000 tons intended to respond to enemy coastal and amphibious threats before they expand. Capable of reaching a maximum speed of 44 knots, their concoction of heavy AAW/ASW weaponry and high maneuverability enables interdiction and air superiority with little restraint. Due to their size, however, the vessel is not suited for prolonged engagements whatsoever and refuels often if it’s foil method is utilized. While in displacement mode, the patrol craft can reach a maximum speed of 12 knots. In wartime it is envisioned that C-990 would perform rapid hit-and-run attacks, possibly with Tomahawk missiles, against enemy littoral forces.

1-3x MANPADSVarying in size, origin, and displacement the C-970 class is an ersatz design instituted in order to provide for a more capable coastal force during the 1970s when such designs were experiencing heavy delays. These vessels tend to hover at between 500 and 1,000 tons displacement, with the larger vessels of course carrying more weaponry, and overall many still hold much of their civilian appearances. Multiple fishing trawlers are in service, armed with the Mk 38 and other higher weaponry, while at the same time speed boats are in the same category. As such, their speed capabilities are also widely varied. Overall they act in a patrol and watch keeper role. In wartime, it is assumed that C-970 would perform irregular operations such as minelaying and ambush attacks, possibly without the benefit of their high visibility distinguishment from civilian vessels, as minelaying rails have been seen on some larger seagoing craft.
In order to distinguish the vessels from civilian craft, their funnels are painted with white and blue diagonal striping and their superstructure is painted navy blue with a white rectangle, measuring from the bow to a quarter of her length, and extending down past the waterline, is on each side. C-990 class vessels also fly the Dual State naval ensign. They are crewed by normal sailors and officers of the fleet.

Seakeeping characteristics can be considered good for the size of the vessel, being at 3,200 tons, and top speed is 20 knots. The xxx operates with a diesel propulsion system due to the perception that it would not operate far from land or in extended periods where such operations would negate the ability to refuel.

g) Critically discuss the strengths of your nation and how they may affect existing regional power structures:Military:
h) If asked to reduce the strength of your nation, how would you do so?
Civilian:Reduction of national size, population, military size in proportion to population size would be the primary methods for a reduction of national strength. I would rather keep the overall quality of life in terms of GDDPC as this affects culture, economics, and military individual quality.
IC Geographical/ResourceSagio-Gershauy has an abundance of raw materials such as iron, nickel, and copper which is overall concentrated in the southern half of the nation. Deposits of uranium have been found in the region, though this often requires heavy drilling and extensive mining efforts before such resources can be harvested. Silver and gold are found in smaller quantities and is not mined as often due to the geographical placement of such deposits within mountainous and heavily forested areas. The nation’s placement in having heavily forested areas allows for timber business to thrive, the preferred and common being a dark oak known as Sagio Sage (The name predating ‘sage’ as a cooking ingredient and instead referring to noble wisdom). This hardwood, while difficult to shape and cut properly, is extremely durable and hardy.
Regional History
The oceanic placement allows for a degree of fishing in both saltwater and freshwater cuisine and, as such, fishing fleets regularly make their daily commutes at both the southern lake areas and in the northern coast. Bass, trout, and salmon are caught in abundance while such things as squid, lobster, and crab are less common.
The degree of riverine terrain within Sagio-Gershauy has allowed for a degree of hydroelectric power which is rarely seen. Dams give the vaster majority of the nation it’s power requirements and are well known in the nation for their reliability. Reroutes and diversion routes are used in a good majority of these dams in an attempt to give fish the ability to move through or around them, while other dams have taken the other approach and instead built the dam on the reroute instead of the main, natural river. Power is also provided to the region via a chain of four nuclear plants built from 1960 to 1976 running the length of the river Trom which are partially underground due to a short-lived fear of a bombing raid crippling the infrastructure and killing millions via radiation. These plants are capable of powering specific areas in times of national crisis or, as per the norm, powering the grid as a whole.
a) What does your nation excel in exporting:b) What does your nation need to import?:
Sagio-Gershauy imports petroleum in heavy amounts as it lacks
c) What is your country self sufficient on?:
d) What is your preferred location on the regional map?
West of Nekulturnya and Drevstran, bordering those two nations from the Boreios Sea to the Periclean Sea, and extending out to the east to encompass both northern peninsulas. Sagio-Gershauy would possibly hold land extending coastally to include portions of the eastern banks to the east of the second peninsula and, to the south, coastally to border Uluujol. This is of course not required but would be preferred.
If an even smaller size is required then West of Nekulturnya and Drevstran, bordering those two nations from the Boreios Sea to the Periclean Sea, and extending out to the east to encompass the first peninsula, with some coastal land on the eastern banks to the east of the first peninsula.
