Sorry if I sound pushy, but are the wiki admins aware that the site is down and, if so, is there an ETA on when it should be back up?

Hey, I'm wondering who currently operates NSWiki?

If so, I'd like to volunteer my time. I've used it in the past for meaningful information, and I'm aware that it is outdated in some parts.

I'd like to revive the Halls of Memory, and add quite a few people. Including Kandarin, Loop, and others.

I keep the site running but anyone should be able to edit it.

Apologies if this is the wrong place for this, but NSWiki has been down for around a week now, or at least, I get a "504 Gateway Time-out, nginx/1.4.6 (Ubuntu)" message when I try to load it.

Is there any update on when it might be back?

Hello old friend!

Also, as of a note, this seems like a common occurrence. NSwiki also seems to be running an obsolete version of MediaWiki, not very mobile friendly, and some of the things it has links to the NS++ development blog and suggestions are DOA. Does NS have plans to add updates or make general improvements to prevent downtime? Is there anything the users of NSWiki can do to help the stability of this NS resource?

The site has been down for a few days (I don't have any control over that, though). But I need some help.

I, along with Kenny, are currently the administrators at NSwiki, but in general we moderate, remove pointless articles and questionable content, and fix broken stuff. I don't mind doing it, though truthfully it's not exactly a demanding task in my opinion. I also contribute to that site as well, through articles, tables, and templates. And while I understand there are many more pressing needs on NS, and there are other things to attend to not limited to this game, I need some help. For the most part, when things are done on my behalf, it is through my own judgment. To my knowledge, there are no rules that really "carry over" from NS the site to there aside from the more glaring ones, like flaming, the likes. I have consulted the admins/mods here on issues in the past, but in general, it's kind of been its own moon on the planet that is the nationstates site. It's there, and stuff happens there, but outside of being in orbit around this planet, it doesn't feel entirely connected.

I know the history of NSwiki and I know how it came to be. I appreciate Elu in how he has maintained this site that thousands of users use to compile all sorts of information related to this game. I also appreciate the mods and admins here who have given me some of their time to help me sort through some complex issues. But, forgive me, I feel like I can't operate in the gray anymore. I don't know where this site fits in conjunction with the game. I don't know what the official stance of the NS site is when it comes to its wiki. I don't even know if we're in competition with other wikis around the game, or if we're the only recognized wiki. I don't even know if we're truly the recognized wiki. And that makes me sad, because I personally believe this site has so much potential.

Imagine if the wiki was more connected with the site. Gameplayers would use it to build on what has become a nice library of history and region happenings. Roleplayers would use it to better sort their nation and its leaders, government, whatever in a way that the dispatches and factbooks don't (while the dispatches and factbooks are good, I believe wikis are more suited for such things). GA and SC folks would use it to discuss votes and the hurdles these votes endured. It would become the quintessential "quick reference" to anything anyone may have a question on, like why Liberate Free Thought was such a fight, or why Macedon was the first condemned region, or who was in San Francisco Bay Area. Perhaps that's ambitious, but as a game, we've accomplished great feats, so I don't doubt the potential.

The old wiki was that, for what it's worth. And that was owned and operated at one point by a former mod.

I want this NSwiki to be more than a distant moon. I want it to be connected, to be officially recognized and to be cherished like the many things we currently cherish in this game. I want NS the site to officially operate NS the wiki. Of course, that likely means I'm out of a job, and I'm prepared for that. I wasn't promoted, I wasn't selected by the community or anything in that nature - I was chosen by the old owner cause I was active on the old wiki, and I happened to stay active when the site was transferred over to Elu. I'm willing to help in any capacity to make this wiki all it can be, cause I know it can be more and I know the integrity of the nations here would utilize it for things I can only imagine. All I ask, if I can indeed ask anything, is that once this is sorted out that the impetus felt as I write this post does not slow; rather, I really do hope it's given the attention and love it deserves from folks who are really into compiling and recording things we conveniently forget, as I do.

I hope this message finds you well, as I'm not writing this out of anger, but out of both thankfulness and uncomfortable concern. All the best.

I do not know how feasible such thing is but in CK2, a global RPG ish video game set in the middle ages, you have a button on top of a playable character. If clicked, it will lead you to their wiki sites if such exists. Perhaps something similar can be done?

I do however not know if it's in cohesion with moderation policies to directly endorse an outside source. Though I wish there could be such function to opt-in or opt-out for the players.

Hey Todd,

I appreciate the work you do with NSWiki. The members of my region and I used the site almost religiously until the dispatch feature was released. Once that was released we migrated some of our pages over the NS site proper. The reason we switched most our nation pages to dispatches was permanence. NSWiki.net going down without warning kind of made us less trusting of 3rd party sites. That being said, we still maintained several of our region pages.

Anyway, I still recommend NSWiki to newer players. It is perfect for collaborative projects. I think dispatches are best for nation facts, but region stuff and "alliance" stuff are perfect for NSWiki because they let multiple people contribute at once. Honestly, I think that is the real selling point of your site. I am not sure how to better integrate NSWiki with NS, but focusing on the collaborative aspect of the wiki pages would probably be your best best.

On my "Useful NS Sites and Utilities" dispatch, I have NSWiki listed. To answer your question about other wikis: I know of 3 other wiki sites. 1 was recently set to read-only mode, so you can't add to it. 1 is supposed to be kept strictly in character. And the other I don't know too much about. Like I said before, yours is the one I recommend to new players.

I hope you keep supporting NSWiki. I think it is a valuable service to the NS community, and I appreciate work you guys do over there.

From my understanding NSWiki.org is owned by NationStates. It shouldn't be treated like a 3rd party site. Maybe it needs to be integrated into NS? Unless NS has a specific reason they do not want to do that, which would be unfortunate, because I've always loved NSWiki and when you rely on it because it is owned by NS... and it goes down for more than a day it becomes frustrating for someone like myself who doesn't like factbooks or dispatches because they just don't feel realistic to me.

I'm not sure how relevant it is, but the wiki which went into read-only mode (NSindex) did reopen for editing on the 11th of this month.

I didn't realize it was NS owned. If that's the case, there should be direct links to the site on NS proper. I like the wiki sites because, as you said, they feel more realistic. Plus wiki pages generally have more links to other pages, so you can go down a wiki rabbit hole.

Awesome, thanks for letting me know. I wasn't following the situation there too closely. That's Charlotte Ryberg's site, isn't it? I'm glad she's opening it back up. I know she put a lot of work into it.

In regards to NSIndex, in my eyes, that's the only wiki site that really competes directly with NSWiki. I always preferred NSWIki, but I think that is simply because it came first. Both are really good sites, though.

I am concerned the current state of NSwiki.org, since the 504 error is affecting the 2008 NSwiki.net archive.

If you can get NSwiki back online, it would be useful to upgrade the MediaWiki software (which is currently at 1.32) and the extensions, and remove the unedited bot-generated pages, since it is needlessly inflating the number of articles and the database size. Afterwards, I would run deleteArchivedRevisions.php via SSH (which is like emptying the Recycle Bin).

I think this may not be the best question at the moment, but "When will NSWiki be online?". I have used it as my primary site of the NS wikias and the fact that as of writing this (25th April 2019, 08.32 CEST (UTC+1)), it's offline with the message "504 Gateway Time-out nginx/1.4.6 (Ubuntu)" kinda worries me.

[Edit: As a user of NSWiki], I'd love to see what Todd McCloud said become a reality. Yes, I think it's time to put NS Wiki under the official NS banner (or subordinated to Mr Max Barry and the site admins/mods). But I guess this can be a bit risky -- for one, it could upset the admins of other NationStates-related wiki sites, some of which are quite influential people in the forum communities

Edit2: That was the reason why I did choose to use NSWiki. Because it has the semi-official feel over other non-official community wikis

We're also having problems syncing nations to forum accounts. I'm guessing that both systems use a variant of our API authentication system ... and that it has currently offline or having problems. Admins have been pinged.

Hi, I don't know if it's working for some now but I still can't get on, I tried logging in just now and it still said that my nation didn't exist unfortunately. I tried both capitalised and not in case that affected it but neither worked. No one else has mentioned it in the discord yet so idk.

We updated a SSL certificate. It's possible you've got the old one in your browser cache. Refresh your cache (Ctrl-F5 on Windows machines) and maybe clear Temporary files (Ctrl-Shift-Del).

For me it's not working; I'm looking on the latest version of Chrome on Android.

On this page, all of the flags of each nation still doesn't appear - a problem which appeared since the issue of logging in came about.

Hello again.
I tried refreshing my cache and clearing temporary files however it still didn't work, I've also tried with my puppet on a different browser and it didn't either, it hasn't been working for Britonisea or Darkmania either so I don't think it's just me (although I don't know if they cleared their caches and stuff lol). Altogether we've tried on both mobile and laptop, over Edge, Chrome, Chrome Mobile and Opera. I don't know if the site's just lagging in updating the fix but in place or if something else is wrong but it's still refusing to let us on unfortunately.
