do capitalists want to be slapped?

Postby Socialist Workers Combine » Wed Apr 17, 2019 4:05 am

The idea runs that the capitalist class wants you to have no labour standards, low taxes low wage etc,. But what it the opposite is true? What if they actually want to be slapped? The last time they provided a living wage tax was 90-70% after given amount and they were competing with the Soviet Union, the economy and you could get a house, car and college.

Note that China has lower standards, but US is still ahead of China (except Macao).
Norway GDP is 12000 higher than US.

The Norwegian economy is an example of a mixed economy, a prosperous capitalist welfare state and social democracy country featuring a combination of free market activity and large state ownership in certain key sectors. Public health care in Norway is free (after an annual charge of around 2000 kroner for those over 16), and parents have 46 weeks paid parental leave. 9.5% of the population aged 18–66 receive a disability pension and 30% of the labour force are employed by the government, the highest in the OECD. The hourly productivity levels, as well as average hourly wages in Norway, are among the highest in the world.

The egalitarian values of Norwegian society have kept the wage difference between the lowest paid worker and the CEO of most companies as much less than in comparable western economies. The state has large ownership positions in key industrial sectors, such as the strategic petroleum sector (Statoil), hydroelectric energy production (Statkraft), aluminium production (Norsk Hydro), the largest Norwegian bank (DNB), and telecommunication provider (Telenor). Through these big companies, the government controls approximately 30% of the stock values at the Oslo Stock Exchange. When non-listed companies are included, the state has even higher share in ownership (mainly from direct oil licence ownership).

which method is better: work sweatshop for nothing, or slap them silly?

Norway is an example of having lots of oil, lots of land, and little population to share the gains over.

Put the Norwegian system in any other national context, with no big rich natural reserves to exploit, and a population density higher than a snowy forest, and it would crash hard.

Pretty sure that if capitalists wanted to be slapped they'd hire someone to slap them and call it a radical new wellness meditation technique.

Some capitalists are willing to admit they should be taxed more. Bill Gates even said he doesn’t deserve his wealth.

And he doesn’t, windows is trash.

Bill Gates is a pretty cool guy, and probably one of the only billionaires I actually like. But most billionaires do not act like him, unfortunately.

Non-question. Norway is an oil-based nation; Similarly-structured economies that don't have the oil advantage (think Denmark) rank below the US in GDP-PPP per capita, although I will concede that such rankings are subjective. Still, the only economy that is not a tax-haven or oil-maker and at the same time surpasses the US in wealth per capita is Ireland, and you could actually make the argument that Ireland fulfilled a tax-haven-like role. And this is factoring in the US's much larger logistical challenges related to the country's huge size and geographic obstacles, unmatched foreign aid, retarded mandatory spending system, poor neighbors which cause an inflow of illegal migrants who disrupt the economy, and a military that has unwillingly become the shield of all of Europe. With all those challenges and strains, the all-American capitalist economy still manages the stat I mentioned in the beginning. I'm thinking capitalists should not be slapped, although I also think having a low corporate tax rate does more for the economy than a low personal income tax rate.

America also has a huge amount of natural resources and it doesn't get blown up every 30 years like Europe used to.
Not that I'm saying your core point is actually wrong, but you can't say that America's successes are purely due to its economic structure.

GDP is 10k higher than Denmark, also doesn’t provide things Denmark provides. I’m not sure what natural resources Denmark has.

That's also correct. Having NRs with a pop of 5-7 million and 350 are very different things, though.

The threat of violence is the only thing that keeps humanity in general in line, this is true for all groups. When a democracy falls to oligarchy, state violence will never turn on them no matter how excessive their anti-social behavior. An external threat of violence (And an external force moving to organize internal revolt) keeps them in line.

The capitalists believe they have successfully removed all threat of violence against them, and so there is no need to be a part of society and constrained by its rules anymore.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

It's quite absurd to claim that those things not being completely tax-funded somehow makes them inaccessible to a vast majority. It's clearly not the case.
