Massive Fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris

A substantial fire has ignited at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Much of the roof appears to be in flames at this point and appears to be spreading. It is currently unknown how it started.

Its truly a tragic event for the world as it is one of Paris's most famous landmarks and one of the most iconic cathedrals in the world.

Your thoughts on this tragic event NSG?

Artistic and architectural wonder on fire. I hope they can save it but I’m afraid that what is lost is lost. I’m deeply saddened. Notre Dame is a treasure.

I’m concerned about the heat of the blaze. What it can damage. I hope they get it under control soon.

It shouldn't be a problem provided the central steeple doesn't collapse. Even then it wouldn't be impossible to fix (Cathedrals have been restored after taking far worse damage), just much harder.

Sad news; hopefully the damage will be under control soon.

One consolation: this is a really major tourist attraction in a wealthy country, so a well-executed reconstruction is likely. Had it been a monument of similar scale and age in, say, Bangladesh, that would have been much less probable.

On a different note, now I want to watch that French musical again.

Genuinely saddened to see a pillar of my country's history and architectural genius go up in flames so violently. Props to the firemen that are on the spot working to preserve it. I'm quite confident that it'll be fully restored, but damn, these images are still hard to watch.

Incredibly sad to think of such an iconic building being damaged, but hopefully they will be able to bring the fire under control and the damage will be repairable.

I love architecture, and I'm always saddened when a treasure is ravaged by fires and other disasters. Sometimes in these cases it can actually have the positive effect of rallying people to reconstruct it, and it might counter the dithering over the maintenance of Notre Dame that has occurred in recent years.
