Look up the Chinese 2020 plan, which is China's plan to "reintegrate" Taiwan by 2020, using force if necessary. Korea and Japan are only a deterrent if they get involved, which they may not with Taiwan as it would hurt their economies. While yes hoping for peace is the best option, hope in one hand and shit in the other, as they say.
