Civic Duty and Sausages Too(An Australian Election Thread)

Postby Shrillland » Mon Mar 18, 2019 7:13 pm

Although it hasn't been officially scheduled yet, the latest an election can be is on May 18, so here we are with the thread for the 2019 Australian General Election...and the New South Wales State Election on March 23 for that matter. May 18 is the latest day that the House of Representatives and half of the Senate can be elected together. The House is made up of 151 members chosen by FPTP and RCV while the Senate is made up of 76 seats(40 will be chosen) by PR and partial STV(the House requires you to fill the entire ballot). Current polls indicate that PM Scott Morrison's LNP(Liberal/National Coalition, which is permanent) is poised to lose in what could be their biggest defeat since 1983 to Bill Shorten's Labor Party(Australians use US spelling for the party).

As for New South Wales, we'll discuss that in the posts. Anyway, let's meet the major and minor parties looking to Parliament. All leaders are in the House unless otherwise stated.

Liberal/National Coalition led by PM Scott Morrison for the Liberals and Michael McCormack for the Nationals: Centre-right, Liberal Conservative, Agrarian(Nationals) Economic Liberals(Liberals)

Australian Labor Party led by Bill Shorten: Centre-left, Social Democratic

Greens led by Senator Richard Di Natale: Centre-left to Left WIng, Green Politics, Social Democratic

One Nation Party led by Senator Pauline Hanson: Right Wing to Far Right, Nationalist, Right Populist, Anti-immigration, Anti-Islamic

Centre Alliance(formerly Nick Xenophon Team), no current leader: Centrist, Social Liberal, Populist

Katter's Australian Party led by Bob Katter: Right Wing, Agrarian, Social Conservative, Economic Nationalist, Protectionist

United Australia Party led by Clive Palmer(Senator Brian Burston is Parliamentary Leader): Right Wing, Nationalist

Liberal Democrats, led by Senator David Leyonhjelm: Libertarian, Economic Liberal, Fiscal Conservative

And of course, there are a LOT of other parites that could get one Senator somewhere such as the Reason Party, Shooters, Fishers, and Farmers, the Animal Justice Party in fact, I'll just put up a list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_Australia

Since this is Australia, the poll's going to be a little different. There will be four options for everyone, and if you can, put down your preferences from one to four in your post(or don't, whatever really).

So, NSG, what's your choices?

If you don't know who you among the major parties, here's a vote compass to help you out: https://votecompass.abc.net.au/?fbclid=IwAR1Paqnj6nMPGZpDz0W9h5ViELmCOtpTf6tWVSePgtMBO493poVvZ1gVMk4

For me, it's Reason 1st, Greens 2nd, Labor 3rd, and the Central Alliance 4th. Labor's OK, but I'm more aligned with the Greens on things like closing the detention centres, rejecting Adani's coal mine, negotating a treaty with the Aboriginal peoples, and switching to renewable energy...though I also stand with Reason more on energy(some support nuclear power) and civil rights issues.

EDIT: The date's been set for May 18.

As for the NSW election on Saturday, I'll say Greens 1st, Labor 2nd, and Reason 3rd. Gladys Berejiklian has been bleeding the state dry as has the coalition for some time, and her war on drugs is turning into a holy crusade against music festivals, which is also giving NSW a bad reputation on a national scale.

As for how the vote will actually go, the coalition will lose the majority, but both will depend on crossbenchers if they want a government.

Nice to see an Aussie election thread.

I'm putting Coalition 1st. Hopefully they can get their shit together by the time the election rolls around. My 2nd preference is for the Liberal Democrats.

My top choices would be Katter's Australian Party or the Democratic Labour Party, but failing either of those I suppose I would support Labour.
Bienenhalde (mostly) represents my real political views.

The Coalition, largely by default, but I don't think I would completely mind the Labour party, maybe.

I'll never truly understand why Australian politicians need to put their names in the political parties they formed.

For most of them, forming a political party is merely an ego trip to say that they alone have the solutions. Even Hanson's technically done it, it's just no one calls it that anymore.

I'm going to troll all of Australia. I'm voting firstly for Clive Palmer, then for the Motoring Enthusiasts, then for Sex Party, because, screw everybody :p

In all serious, I'll probably vote for the Libs, because I like their policies, and I like ScoMo. But I'm getting sick to death of all the backstabbing within the Liberal party. If ScoMo wins, who knows how long he'll be in for. There are a few minor parties that I like, so I'll definitely use my preferences. Of coarse, with regards to my vote, nothing is set in stone until my ballot is in the box, and my vote may very well change on election day.

The One Nation party truly has the platform Australia needs to prosper. I'd go so far as to say that it is like medicine. Too many people don't like it for selfish reasons, but when taken- it will do the country a world of good. Taking Australia back on a real Australian destiny.

ALP in my local electorate, because they'll win and my member is good.

On Senate, probably Reason or Vic Socialists first, depending on candidates, and then Greens and Labor, again, depending on candidates.

Will obviously make it my personal pleasure to number every box so the Hansonites and their imitators are last, as I always do. I consider that my civic duty.

Egotism.

Personally I make it my policy to avoid such parties. I'm not big on demagogues, and demagogues with messiah complexes are worse.

My flag was deleted because it wasn't "namby pamby" enough for this website. People were supposedly too offended. I'm awfully upset about it. It wasn't no swastika flag. This is the same website that allows ISIS flags as a "non-offensive" alternative, apparently. Maybe it was because it showed Pepe the Frog with a Wojak in a headlock, and not because of the overall political message.

In any case, I endorse the One Nation party for Australia because it is the one party within their politics that will do as I want Australia to be doing.

Labor, and additionally, I'm not too familiar with the intricacies of Australian politics and the mechanisms of the electoral system, but that Fraser Anning character would be up for re-election, yeah? Could the people of Queensland swiftly vote out that literal white supremacist? That would probably be a good call.
