It provided the labour for great civilisations; the Sumerian states, Rome, China, and Egypt, and for many thousands of years was socially and culturally accepted as a means to contrast the value of being free, and economically beneficial.

In the modern world, slavery has declined per capita. All nations in the real world today prohibit it, although many may tolerate its presence if it brings in profit. The general Western attitude to slavery is one of abhorrence, yet it should always be the case of consider the necessity of our ancestors. Our morals today may have crippled their societies then, and to understand slavery is to understand the necessity of it, and why it happens.

By which law or constitutional amendment is the right to own people as slaves enshrined and protected? | The founding laws of the Senate and Freeborn Landholders of Ephyra, established by Valaemedes Anogarios Artalos in imitation of the Bronze Tablets of Ephyra over two thousand years prior, deal with the legal rights of the citizen and the slave and are taken therefore to enshrine their legality.

For how long in your nation (and / or nations you are descended from) has slavery existed as a legal process? | The Freehold has had slavery consistently since its founding in 479 CE, however, the political entites that were the free-city of Ephyra under the Roman Empire and Republic, as well as the preceding political authority of Ephyra under Arconian rule and prior self rule as a republic, tyranny, and palatial Bronze Age polity, have all permitted slavery. To this end, one can consider slavery as a legal institution to have begun as far back as at least the 15th century BCE, but likely far earlier as matter of tribal agreement.

By what legal process must a private citizen or registered company complete in order to obtain valid ownership of another human? | Citizens and companies are free to privately negotiate the sale of one or more slaves from any citizen with the legal documents of ownership and license of ownership and sale. They are also free to take part in public and private auctions of people into slavery performed by third parties for state and private interests.

Soldiers of Ephyra have historically always been free to keep as a slave any man, woman, or child distributed to them as part of a conquest for their service, with legal documents of ownership provided following the conquest.

The Sphere of Commerce and Trade also permits trading and negotiation with registered foreign parties.

Does the forfeit of this process and the use of another human for forced labour constitute a crime under your nation's law? | Yes. Involvement in slave trading without the proper licenses and documents constitutes an economic offence and the misleading of the public with whom sale was intended.

How many for each free wo/man? | Of the total population of 265,000,000 within the Freehold, as of 2021, 10.2% of said number live as legally owned slaves, an estimate of 27,030,000, approximately 3x smaller than the number of full citizens.

What punishment (if any) is mandated for those who are involved with the business of illegal slavery? | Those charged, tried, and found guilty of involvement in the trade of persons held in illegal slavery have all of their property confiscated and are sold into slavery themselves. For men, this can see their children (legally property of the father), also enslaved.

For what tasks, jobs, and roles are slaves typically purchased for any by legal entity? | Slaves are purchased for a variety of enterprises. Whilst industrial development has made the process easier, slaves are sometimes used alongside the population holding Lykosian rights or foreign status for matters of farm-work or mining; slaves are highly coveted as domestic and personal retainers to both government staff and private households and individuals; whilst the largest individual enterprise seeking slaves are brothels and other establishments catering to pleasure.

Domestic slaves may perform any variety of work needed from cleaning, cooking, dressing, washing, gardening, sexual servitude, bathing, accounting, and so on.

Are there any occupations slaves are by law prohibited to hold? | Slaves cannot be 'employed' in any conventional sense, and when utilised are not placed into any positions of legality and are prohibited from doing so.

What are the rights of the master over the slave? Can s/he kill the slave at a whim? Is sexual abuse or exploitation of the slave permitted etc? | The rights of the master or mistress over the slave are absolute. Any legal owner of a slave is within their rights to kill the slave, subject them to whipping, branding, or other maiming, and utilise them sexually for their own pleasure or permit their use by another. There are however, exceptions to this.

Spousal property is not joint under Ephyral law. A woman, who legally remains part of her birth family when married, is not permitted to kill any slave owned in her husband's name except in self-defence. Doing so may lead to a charge of property damage. However, as both as his wife and a subject of his duty of care, she has all legal authority to inflict non-lethal punishment to maintain the integrity of the household in his absence. Wives are also permitted to offer sexual use of a slave to any guest, but are prohibited from any sexual relations with slaves themselves. This is considered adultery and subject to divorce and legal loss of rights.

On the flip-side, any slaves a woman brings to the house of her husband as either dowry or owned property remain fully under her authority to dispense with as she pleases (with again an exception to sexual use for the self), whilst her husband remains prohibited from killing them, with similar consequences in regard to a property damage suit. As head of the household however, he has full authority to dispense physical justice to ensure the integrity of the household, and may subject the slaves of his wife to such punishment. He may also utilise them directly, or offer them to others, for sexual use.

Conventionally however, citizen men and their wives regard the enforcement of slave behaviour as a joint enterprise and all one spouse needs from the other to kill a slave not owned by them is verbal consent, eliminating much of the legal obstacles entirely. In the case of divorce, the woman shall leave the house with her dowry and property including all slaves part of either, returning the dowry slaves to her parents and retaining her own. Any infliction of punishment upon a slave by a former spouse after this point is a crime of property, but no actions prior will count as illegal.

In accordance to or alongside this, what rights if any do slaves possess under law? | Slaves are recognised under law as property distinct from animals or inanimate property but this has little in the way of protection. If a slave is assaulted, raped, or killed by anyone whom has no legal ownership over them or authority to do so, then the man or woman who did so shall be punished but for damage of property, not a crime against a person.

Who is permitted by law to purchase a slave? | Any man or woman with the rights of commerce and property may own a slave. These include full citizens and those holding the Lykosian Rights. Foreign residents in Ephyra also have access to the right of commerce and property as they were vetted and accepted via immigration process. This consideration was made to allow foreign-born economic participation and also invite foreign businesses to establish themselves in the Freehold. Provincials, whilst not having the right to make contracts or hold property as a citizen, may still hold slaves under the treaty established with their provincial community.

Slaves cannot own slaves, although free slaves can.

How evenly are slaves distributed amongst the populace of your nation? Which class owns the most slaves etc. | Most slaves are certainly concentrated in the higher classes of the Freehold, the Senatorial class aristocracy and the families of the Old Blood. Many slaves are also held by enterprises like brothels, with citizens in general out of the total freeborn population owning the most slaves.

What type of slaves are in the highest demand? (Scribes, gladiators, sex slaves, personal retainers etc.) | Due to an often limited timeframe of use, and a wish to avoid the legal rights afforded to free prostitutes, sex slaves for brothels (known as bed slaves) in Ephyra are of high demand. These slaves are split into two categories, slaves for simple use, and slaves trained in pleasured arts. These latter slaves are vastly more expensive and in great demand.

However, domestic slaves are also a want for many private citizens, who view the obtaining of a slave for their house as a sign of success and wealth, especially when such a slave can assist or replace the wife's domestic obligations and place her into a position of higher comfort and provision.

By what methods are new slaves acquired by your nation for sale to the population? | Whilst not outright confirmed, it is very much believed that the Freehold sponsors or engages in slave raiding or trading agreements with neighbouring states of low stability and high internal conflict, with the Freehold paying either to abduct the people of a certain area, or is transported them discreetly for pay. The abduction of civilians from hostile states or secessionists has also occurred, with the 1940-1946 Great War seeing vast numbers of native Ukrainians behind Freehold lines rounded up and brought to the Freehold during Ephyra's withdrawal and leaving the territory to the administration of its ally. Many of these people were the survivors of the initial Ephyral invasion, during which widespread killings, rapes, and other acts were inflicted upon the population.

Slaves are also acquired via enslavement as a judicial process, sentencing for crimes etc. However, a final, longer, and more controversial way of obtaining slaves is slave breeding. This occurs almost entirely at the periphery of the Freehold's territories in isolated areas, and whilst not outright authorised by the government, is permitted. There, slaves are mated selectively to produce a variety of breeds and cross-breeds. Borderline human experimentation, the process does produce more slaves than it requires for the programme to exist, making it a net profit and ensuring its continued existence.

Children born naturally to slave women are also enslaved by default.

Are slaves drawn from any particular racial or ethnic group? | No. Although in war against a specific state, local tribal allies will be spared enslavement and even be entreated to a share of spoils of the target hostile population when victory is won. Different ethnic groups and races may be seen as optimal for certain slave professions. Eastern women, ranging from Arab to Central Asian to Chinese, have always provoked a feeling of exotic attraction, and such slaves present in a brothel often cost more to use for their rarity. African slaves are regarded as physically fitter for heavier labour. Various European slaves as better for domestic work. However there is no formal system and a slave's future is determined by who buys them.

Who, if anyone, is protected by law from being enslaved by any process? | No one. All people are protected by law from illegal enslavement, but no one is exempt from the legal process of enslavement such as criminal punishment. Indeed, the strong familial and communal nature of Ephyra can lead to the errors of one becoming a punishment for all. If a man of Ephyra builds debts, and is taken to court and enslaved by his creditors for sale alongside his property for the purpose of compensation, yet this does not meet the debt he has built; then the law permits all of his sons and daughters to be divorced from any spouse they have and similarly enslaved. This has no generational limit, and the infamous collapse of the Rahgyreon bank and its head family saw three whole generations of the family enslaved for the debts incurred by one man.

By what process can a slave be freed? | Any master can free any slave at choice, simply by signing a document of manumission identifying the slave, and giving it to them. A slave may also be freed in a master's will, but voided if the master is killed by any of his slaves for which the guilty slave is executed and all others sold.

For what crimes, if any, can a citizen of your nation be stripped of legal rights and sold into slavery? How does this impact his or her property or family? | Financial crimes primarily. Debts, tax evasion, fraud, terrorist financing, and various others. Non-financial crimes that would often see life sentences in other countries might see enslavement in Ephyra, although if particularly violent, they may be deemed too dangerous.

What sociocultural impact on values, ethics, and philosophy has the legal presence of slavery had upon your population? | For the Ephyral, slavery is the counter-example to the idea of freedom, and the concept of freedom of body, movement, and life, is held highly in Ephyra because alongside them in society and in their homes is the living, breathing opposite. Slavery, lack of self-ownership, subjugation to another's whims. This could be the fate of any Ephyral for the wrong act, and as a result, perhaps ironically, this slave-holding society holds freedom as one of its highest values.

Do any movements exist within your nation arguing and agitating for the abolition of slavery, or its replacement with indentured servitude? How popular are they? | There are some political movements that wish to see slavery removed, although none with an agenda of total abolition. However these movements are not popular due to both the Classicalist and Modernist (two most prominent philosophical groups in Ephyra) upholding the right to slavery enshrined by the founding of Ephyra.

Has slavery as a social and moral issue been the cause of internal or external conflict with separatists / rebels or foreign powers? | Yes. Two major wars have been fought, one with the Russian Empire and one with the Republic of Washington, both regarding slavery against their populations. Both wars saw a loss for Ephyra but not a capitulation; with Ephyra continuing the trade but at a reduced rate.

Has your nation had a history of slave rebellions? Which ones were the most prominent? | Ephyra has seen six Great Slave Revolts as they've been called, defined primarily by the large-scale nature of their rebellion. The largest of these was the last, where 30,000 armed slaves and over 100,000 unarmed men, women, and children rose up in revolt across two of the eastern provinces, sacked whole cities and destroyed towns, killing and raping Ephyral citizens as a target, but conquered populations as a by-product. Over 60,000 Ephyral citizens were killed, and the war ended after approximately half a year with the defeat and capture of the rebellion's leaders, their execution along with thousands of slaves, and the transportation of the rest into the mines to work to death.

Internally, there have been no conflicts over this. Unlike humans, who are quick to enslave each other, it is rare that we will enslave one of our own. Humans - and all biologicals, for that matter - are other species than us and are therefore literally like animals to us (the same as how humans see non-human biologicals). This makes it so that there is a "separation" not seen in human slaving societies. There is no "but they're [our species] too" argument to be made, because they factually are very different.

Malware is typically found in illicit software, which the most idiotic of our population will run through their mind-boards without thoroughly checking it with several anti-viruses first. The fact that only a stupe will be this careless makes it so that Decepticon slaves get no sympathy as individuals. HOWEVER, almost everyone (except the hackers) is highly insulted at the very idea of one of our own being reduced to being a "glorified human" - and is also concerned that the hacker may hide his malware in something less-obviously shady - so vigilante action against discovered hackers is swift, brutal, and inevitably fatal.

Slavery was not a widespread phenomenon. Slaves were only permitted to be owned by the king, as well as noble families who were specifically given permission to own slaves by the king. After the civil war, slavery was a symbol of tyranny and therefore abolished.

No movement argues for slavery as one of its core values but the Restoration Movement and the Royalist Party both hold the position that slavery and indentured servitude respectively would be within the rights of a monarch, which both parties seek to bring back. Both parties are deeply unpopular and are considered fringe parties and extremists.

Slavery ended as a result of revolution. Most people within Quaeg were discontent with the increasingly corrupt royal family and it was a matter of public knowledge that the rebels would abolish many of the corrupt practises of the royal family, including slavery.

No. The small number of slaves within the country meant that any attempt to resist would be futile. Some slaves took part in the revolution, specifically the ones whom the aristocracy freed after the noble families joined the revolutionary cause. When the conflict in the civil war first began, many slaves in the posession of the royalty and royalist families were culled over suspicions of espionage.

There has only been one instance of history in which slavery was present in Quaeg. It arose over time in conjunction with increasingly authoritarian and tyrannical rule by the royal families who, in response to increasing quality of public education and calls for greater dissemination of power to people, had become crueller and more corrupt in order to solidify their rule over Quaeg in uncertain times.
