Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. I got it for Christmas but didn't know anything about the different translations, so now I'm reading the Martin Palmer version. No complaints though.

On a separate note, anyone have any books about the Sengoku Jidai they can recommend? I dunno if this question is allowed, but if it is, I'd appreciate some suggestions.

Engels' book is far more interesting than the title would lead you to believe.

I've generally found that true of Engels, he's quite overlooked. Unfortunately, I haven't read any of the books of the Engels you're talking about.

The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler. Chandler's distinctive style of descriptive writing is often imitated, but rarely equalled. The ultra cool, mostly amoral detective Philip Marlowe is a fantastic creation.
