A Cold War in March [MT/PMT][IC][CLOSED]

A Cold War in March
Many have tried to subvert a united Asia. None have succeeded.

The Pan-Asiatic States stands on the brink of economic prosperity. Opportunists hide in the shadows. On the 25th of February, the Anglomir Government openly denounced the government of the Pan-Asiatic States, calling the Federation a threat to humanity itself. Whilst not an unusual occurrence for the young nation, this was followed by the backing condemnation of the Kingdom of Kjalaara. Fearing the increasing exposition of the Federation would spoil trading contracts being effected by the administration and by several of its Federal constituents, the denouncements were returned and denied; leading to the Pan-Asiatic States calling for an embargo of the two nations, with the support of the Cardwidth Islands, demanding a resignation of the condemnation.

Furthermore, as midterm elections in the Pan-Asiatic States begin to close-in, the question of foreign policy dominates local discourse. Rumors are beginning to circulate that subversive actions are being taken against the democracy established in Asia. This has raised both dissenting and approving voices that raise an age-old question into the limelight; should Asia continue the World Revolution abroad, or maintain pacifism within its borders?

Nevertheless, for too long have the Pan-Asiatic States held a grudge against the Fascistic and Ultra-capitalistic elements that surmount it. Will the condemnations encourage Asia's enemies to find the strength to assuage political power in Asia after decades of peace? Or will this test of resolution prove one more time that Neo-Maoism is not a force to be trifled with, and that the solidarity of oriental peoples everywhere cannot and will not be broken?

History hangs once more in the balance, and great earth-shattering events are to occur, which may mark the end of the Federation's economic fortunes, for the greed of external forces has begun to seep into the shielding might of the black banner.

The Unitary State of Melanesia
Federated People's Republic of Pan-Asiatic States

Image

Another quiet afternoon on Melanesian shores was passing. Of course, a quiet afternoon for the people of the Pan-Asiatic States had very different connotations. A quiet afternoon meant Melanesian shores crashing into an open beach, whence protests continued to scream at each missile truck and battalion passing by the shoddy rural terrain, resisting armement. The State had only recently made ubiquitous deployments on the island, not combat-type deployments and certainly not large ones, but garrisons to protect the missile silos pointing directly at the United States.

But the island was also in that era of a nation, twice per four years, when all sorts of political folk cowered on grand stadiums proclaiming a glorious future. Sides were always taken, words always uttered, and political ambition always cheered upon. It was a vibrant democracy to say the least.

The dockyards were like any other nation's dockyards. The sailors were dim-witted, guards lazily lay on their outposts. Dockmasters were known to be corrupt, allowing all sorts of goods to flow through the small island's trading ports. Melanesia was one of the more rural territories of the Federation, away from the bustling urban scene which the nation tended to boast about. Melanesia was away from the quarrels of the capital officials, away from the stench of factory sweat which urban residents could detect from miles away.

The carts of ice cream rolled by the modest buildings of TImor-Leste, while fisheries remained hard at work. It was no heaven, it was no hell; but life went on under the red-yellow-black banner.

Two Datus hollered at the marching battalion. Abrupt footsteps and the rolling of Battletanks could be heard in the distance by the compound's foreign officials. Not far-off, encampments had been set by the Pan-Asiatic States Armed Forces; to the compound, they were as visible as tiny specks of dust.

Armored trains began unloading several pieces of artillery, and the whooshing of Aircraft resounded in the skies. The border around the compound was being fortified. But why?

State of Yurk, Yurk, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Oberkönigreich of Anglomir

Within a dark room, Mr Hunter Ungvarj sat, legs crossed, and chin resting thoughtfully between his index finger and thumb.
"Johnathan?" he called, rather loudly. The young boy came rushing from the adjacent room.
"Reichminister Ungvarj, how may I be of service?" he breathed, not out of breath from the running, but from the adrenaline. Disrespect could get a man killed these days, especially one in such a precarious position as himself.
"Telephone for the Oberkönigpräsident, and the other Ministers." He paused. "Actually, no. We'll only need Mengelel, Ironsytes and Roswell."
The anxious assistant held his breath. He knew better than to speak out of turn and inquire into matters above his pay grade. However, a certain name brought him a degree of concern. Ever the pacifist, he was all for the Party's propagation of their supreme aryan race - but he couldn't stand violence.
"Roswell, sir?"
Annoyed, Ungvarj stiffened, stood up, and straightened his posture.
"The Reichminister of War, yes. Roswell", he snapped. Gods, it was difficult to find an assistant these days truly loyal to the cause. Mengelel over at the propaganda sector really needed to up his game. He noticed that Jonathan was still standing there, seemingly paralysed.
"Well?"
The boy sprung back to life, a clumsily flailing as he gathered himself and rushed out the room.
"Of course, right away sir!" he called over his shoulder.
Ungvarj shook his head, rather bemusedly, as he sent a quick message to Homeland Security.
He supposed he'd better start looking for his next assistant.

State of Yurk, Classified Address
Oberkönigreich of Anglomir

The men gathered around the table, speaking only in hushed whispers. Within that room stood the five most important people in Anglomir. The Reichminister of War, Security, Foreign Affairs, Propaganda, and of course, the Oberkönigpräsident himself, Mr Eindride. As the Anglisch people continued their lives outside, a decision was being made that had the potential to alter the course of history for the world stage, or at least the success of their dreams for a global ethnostate. Black-clad guards stood outside the doors, AK-47 rifles held strongly at attention, gazes unflinching. They heard nothing, said nothing, and by all accounts, knew nothing. Even as the door burst open, and the dark suited men sombrely proceeded out, the guards moved not, and did not dare to question.

The stoutest of the five stopped, and raised a finger. Eindride was used to being waited on.
"Send it to the Oberkönigführer for approval", he murmured over his shoulder. "Regardless of what he says, after the drafting is finished, I want it circulated to all the governments in question, encryption code Omega Black. Understood?"
A nod spread through the group. They made their way outside, and, with a militant salute, parted ways.

A storm was brewing.

REICHMINISTRY FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Sent 8:37pm, 14/03/19

To: The Queendom of Kjalaraa, The Constitutional Monarchy of Deutschess Kaiserreich
Cc: Anglisch Reichministry of War, Anglisch Reichministry of Propaganda, Anglisch Reichministry of Homeland Security

Dearest governments of the fair Queendoms,

We contact you in a time of great tension. As you are no doubt aware, on the 25th of February, the Königsparliament of Anglomir issued an official denouncement of the Pan-Asiatic States and all that they stand for as filthy, Asian, communist regime. Their continued existence is a blight on humanity, and the one true pure race of blondafolk and fair of skin.

It is no secret that this March, a rare set of elections are fast approaching within the Asiatic Federation. With this, comes an opportunity. There is no doubt that the elections, like the country, are already corrupt and fraudulent. We are, hence, struck with the idea to bring about some pro-Aryan democracy within their ethnostate. Manipulation or interference with the elections have been identified as priorities for national security of the Oberkönigreich and its continued interests in the region within the foreseeable future. We recognise this may also be of interest to you.

Preliminary investigations by intelligence analysts have been unable to determine much. The general consensus is that on-the-ground boots will be required to successfully assess the situation in the States. Anglisch infiltrators are being briefed as we speak. Initial access points for agents are being determined; however, the current assessment indicates that Malenesian ports and costal compounds, and the recently acquired Asiatic territory of Devonta, are the favourable options.

We invite you to a further briefing in the Capitol City of Yurk, within the State of Yurk, Anglomir, to discuss tactics and planned operations for achieving optimal outcomes for this endeavour. The future of a utopian, communist-free white world lays in your hands.

Your response is awaited.

MR HUNTER UNGVARJ
MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
OBERKONIGREICH OF ANGLOMIR

Federated People's Republic of Pan-Asiatic States

The lights of the city continued to shine like a starry night, the capital skyscrapers towered over men like gods and titans; a perpetual reminder of the prosperity the revolution had brought upon the continent. Entertainment and delights, luxuries and commodities showered the urban areas, seemingly a surreal mix of socialistic aesthetics, nationalist symbolisms, propaganda posters, and semi-consumerist abundance. Neo-Manila, once nothing but a dusty field unto which the world's most powerful explosive had made a mark upon, was now not only the core trading port of Southeast Asia's vast territories, but a flourishing pearl of the orient-- the pride of the Federation.

One such luxurious establishment was the Manila Hotel, which overlooked salt-smelling seas. An ancient landmark that has stood the test of time that boasts Hispanic architecture coupled with modern utilities and impedimenta. Tonight, however, another such impedimentum was the sprawling security garrisoning each of the main atria, doorways and corridors.

Bo Phyo, or "Uncle Bo" was taking residence here. He packed his things dutily and orderly into his premium room's interior; filling cabinets with clothes and drawers with books. Bo was quite an eccentric man. Only decades earlier, he had been raising cattle in Cambodia. Now, he wanted to raise a nation. Thus, like many Indochinese figures, he took upon giving himself a rather filial name, and the people had loved him. His enemies despised him for it.

Reading Auf Afrikan Kolonialismus by the corner of the room was his campaign advisor, Tang Tai. A Manchurian of rather weak physique and impaired vision, learned in multiple languages, he calmly flipped the pages of Herr Josef von Schtlussdorf's Nederstjil book.

"Bo, you wouldn't believe what some of these Frievolker men have to say about Colonialism. It's both outrageous and intriguing at the same time."

"Hear, hear."
responded the would-be Congressman.

"Look Tai," continued Bo.

"You'd better put the book down and get some rest. The flight coordination, the toxic work week-- ugh. Phone your wife or something, I'm sure she misses you, and I'll go to bed as well."

"--Then you, Comrade Bo, best rest well too. Big day tomorrow, and you'll need all the strength you can get for that anti-militarization rally tomorrow. I've just gotten in touch with Melanesia, they say they'll continue theirs for another two weeks."
, retorted Tang Tai.

Tai packed his book into a satchel and left after a minute of checking if all his files were in place. Once he left, Bo took out a copy of the morning news, a tattered copy of the Nguoi Viet Daily News, with the Devontan territorial holding armament as its superscripted headline. He sighed.

"I have seen... A different Asia."

The Northern Chinese plains had been subject to heavy industrialization since time immemorial; be it under clique, Kuomintang, or Maoists. Another aspect of the North which remained constant was conflict. It seemed that part of Asia was always rife with some sort of dispute. Here, stars drifted directional, the sky moved like a senile dance in accordance to the will of the seasons.

A young Kazakh boy, no less than 13, lay in his bed within the thinning paint which shrouded hollow-block walls, lamenting the nocturnal sights through a small window. Suddenly, however, the thundering whirrs of helicopters approached the paddy fields, and the stars seemingly began to disappear as the shadows moved through the sky.

In a moment's time, boots began to thunder the soil of his settlement like drums orchestrated with the whirring of the chopper-blades. His parents awoke to the knocking of a Babaylan and a Datu. Their expression seemed eagerly interrogative, and when they showed their MSPS badge, all doubts of them having any other business was cast-aside. The family invited the men inside to sit by their fireplace, along with two aspirants of the Air Force and a Lieutenant.

"We'll be brief. Have you seen any... Westerners, or suspicious conspiratory activity around the vicinity of this agricultural zone, citizen?", asked the Datu.

"No, sir.", responded the tall father.

"Not even your common border-crosser? When was your last incident, if any? I'm sure there has been in this area though.", asked the Datu once again.

"The last incident was 2-- no, 3 months ago. A fellow from Xi'an, I believe."

"Ah, I see. Good night to you then, citizen. We'll be inquisiting your neighbours as well. If there's anything... out-of-place... contact your local station. And if there's anything to add, I implore you to do so now."

"None, sir. Please be on your way. It's late."
, responded the father. The son, at this point, who had fetched his two sisters from behind their rooms, was shivering in fear.

"Very well then, comrade citizen. I hope this summer won't be bad on your rotation. Stay vigilant.", said the Datu, abruptly leaving to take visits on surrounding households.

As the officials left, a visible feature of confusion, anguish, distrust, and annoyance seemed to settle upon the expressive faces of the family members. Each went back to bed with many more questions than they were initiated into answering.

Dear Mr. Hunter Ungvarj

We have received your message. We are reluctant to engage in a conflict only three years after the third Weltkrieg. More Germans will not die in a foreign land but the Kaiserriech is very concerned with the development in the far east. We have alerted several of our African naval basses to be on alert for possible threats and we will send a delegation to your capital to discuss further action. However, we will not mobilize the Whermact until we have been convinced of a great enough threat to the security of the Kaiserriech. We will not have more young German lives perish unnecessarily.
Signed,

Once known as Puerto de la Princesa to the West; Kota Pwertu had for more than a century now been the heart of Sampornese rule in Palawan. As one of the safest places in the region, Palawan has been known by many as "The Best Island"; upon which prosperity has ensued. Skyscrapers tower over the landscape, with little fear of natural hazards; as no storm nor volcano nor earthquake could ravage the island. However, now is not the time for greatness to be of the topic; and as the wind blows eerily, it becomes clear that new tensions are arising. Due to its high desirability and proximity to the Pan-Asiatic States, which has been quite recently the center of international attention; the citizens grow weary. With tensions rising evermore, the coast guard is on high alert, with multiple patrol craft scouring the local waters.

Once the heart of what could be known as the Moro nation, the state of Brunei holds an important place in the hearts of every Sampornese; as not only the site of cultural heritage, but economic success and prosperity as well. Indeed, do we speak of Padang Berawa; the location of which oil had been first discovered in Brunei. While the oil continues to flow however, a new wind brings an eerie chill to the hearts of the Bruneian Sampornese. Oil was Samporna's greatest export, and Brunei was desirable for this; and with the proximity of the Pan-Asiatic States, came the fear of a new colonial master under the guise of a different kind of socialism. One many Sampornese fear might seek to destroy their national identity, in order to make way for Pan-Asianism, a false ideology.

Mark Trosten, Anglisch revolutionary?

RIOTS TODAY in Saxony as local everyman Mark Trosten has come forward to lead an illegal public political rally, where he has preached the values of "true" egalatarian socialism. He has called for the abolishment of the Anglisch monarchy, citing their re-implementation in 2005 as an affront to progression in Anglisch society, and furthermore condemning the National Front as a syncretic far-right ultranationalist government who masquerades left-wing values to disguise their corporatism as syndicalism. His protest was carried on on a makeshift wooden lectern, assembled by himself and two close mates in the Craftsmen Syndicate, and gathered thousands of citizens in rousing chanting solidarity. Anglisch Secret Intelligence Service infiltrators filmed the entire rally under the guise of protestors, managing to positively identify many of the citizens present; already, rumours of disappearances concerning these indivudals are being suppressed by the Königsparliament. At the moment, Trosten rests safe in an uneasy politcal standoff - the proud and smug look on his face as his rally was forcefully dispersed implies he knows that now he is too well-known to assisinate without major public suspicion and backlash. Furthermore, he is being flanked by a continent of diehard supporters, who became infatuated with his cause after his rally earlier this morning, at all times. Time will tell as to whether this brief flicker of dissent will lead to further uprisings in the State of Saxony, and indeed, the Fatherland as a whole.

"I don't like it", mused the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hunter Ungvarj, as he paced back and forth in one of the many pristine and elegantly decorated rooms of the Palace.
"The timing is a bit... suspicious", replied his new assistant, a sturdy, solemn young man by the name of Antti Nöyetti.
"Combine that with the Kaiserreich's misinterpretation of the espionage proposal, and we've got a real problem on our hands", Ungvarj sighed. His brow furrowed. There was still time to clear things up.
"Alright," he began, "here's what needs to happen next."
Antti folded his arms behind his back and raised his chin, standing at attention.
"Contact the Kjalaaran government, tell them we're going ahead with the foreign intervention program ASAP, with or without them."
The boy nodded, and Ungvarj's pacing came to a stop. He rested his hands on the back of a regal wooden chair.
"The Kaiserreich needs to know that we don't intend to start a war. At least, not a traditional one. Make that very clear."
Once more, his assistant acknowledged his instructions.
"Lastly, tell Ironsytes to get the boys as the YKB off their ass and figure out a solution to this Trosten bastard. An anarcho-socialist uprising is exactly the kind of weakness the States can exploit." He levelled his gaze. "Is that understood?"
Antti was quite good at picking up the nuances of the job. He simply nodded once more.
"Good. Now get out of here, kid. We've got a cold war to start."
With an Oberführer's salute, the assistant was gone.
"A fucking cold war... never make my job easy, do you?" he muttered, quietly enough to avoid the bugs hearing him, as he stared morosely at an imperious looking portrait of Oberkönigfuhrer Austen Arcaeus Tylvik Agnor I. He paused to gather himself for a few more seconds, before stepping back outside into the Royal Courtroom.

There were appearances to keep up, after all.

The Secretary-General reviewed a few facets of global news from his desk. Mark Trosten's name and deed was a sure surprise to the elderly premier. It seemed so impeccable that the embers of the Anglisch worker's liberation would suddenly spark at a time when many capital officials connotated it having been snuffed-out a long time ago.

Taking-out a cigar, he looked anxious. There was something off-putting about this. Although perhaps too, it was a leak in the Anglisch system. Perhaps this was something he could exploit someday. Certainly, it would be something that would delight the Trotskyists. Nevertheless, he had more pressing matters to concern himself with.

Flipping the next page from Eastern Press Universal, nearly on-cue, he had found what sort of adversary he had been referring to. Melanesian student walkouts at protest against the militarization of the islands were happening once again, as if the insurgent rambling of those damned Trotskyists outside the Palace had not been enough to put him on-edge!

"Pundehadas. Ungrateful little bastards."

His hand reached for his telephone.

"Gregorio. You haven't been doing your job. You told me this would be a minor setback. Look at us. What good is Songun if the masses don't support us? I'm giving you one last chance. Abra out."

"To you, Comrade Walo!"

"No, friends-- to Melanesia! For peace!"

Whilst the archipelago region slept quietly in their cozy accommodations, young and disgruntled university students were plotting a very dangerous outcry from a local tavern. The clanging of 17 beers was met with resounding praise for a single man; a black-skinned, tall-statured 19-year-old in a tattered navyman's jacket. On his head was bestowed an olive cap, a crown of blazing idealism. On it, the colors of Melanesia, and of the indigenous peoples of Melanesia. This man was Gesupo Walo, and surrounding him were 16 workers from one of two factions; portmasters and university students. Gesupo was an aspiring Navy engineer, but his revolutionary flair, as an advocate of indigenous people's rights, busted him into trouble and out of college.

"I tell you, my friends, it is not my work. It is not my work!", half-drunkenly spoke Gesupo.

"We- *hic*, we'll be having a *hic* special guest for tonight's gathering.", continued he.

His friends looked at him with avid confusion.

"Who is it?", inquired one of the sailors.

"Politician. Guess.", retorted Gesupo.

"East Mel or West Mel?", asked another.

"C'mon, no hints, guess!", retorted Gesupo once more.

"Well, give us a district!", jovially asked a short tan-skinned student from behind the crowd.

"Komo.", answered a shady gentleman in a suit, invisible to the crowd until now, from the doorway of the tavern.

"Gentlemen," introduced Gesupo;

"Kumi-Kispe Maru. At your service.", finished the gentleman.

All were struck with awe.

The Unitary State of Melanesia

Agent Carlson pulled his low slung cap down further over his face. The crew, including himself, were all busily scurrying about the boat as they coasted the final few metres into the wooden docks. Shouts Anglisch and Mandarin mixed, as the men of the Oden, a 1990s rust bucket of a trading ship, made the preparations to tie down and anchor to shore. As he knelt down, his eyes furtively glanced upward, concealed by his hat. Skirting the place, he took in the beautiful Melanesian geography; the crystal clear water, the bustling nightlife of the port, lush green forests, and clear twilight skies.

It was a shame such a place had fallen to Yellow Communism.

Finishing the slipknot, he straightened back up, and cracked his knuckles. There were other boys on the boat, other infiltrators, but none of them had been informed who was with the mission and who was not. Standard protocol; protecting the others in case of capture. He cast his mind back to training at the YKB. No names, just numbers. No friends, just partners. No people, just tools. Despite his white skin, and he'd been favoured for selection for this particular mission due to his background in international studies, especially those of the Asian threats to the Reich. As such, he had a good enough understanding of local language, culture, history, and customs to know what goes on in these ports, and blend in. Taking a few subtle deep breaths, he composed himself.

The Obliteration of the Self may have been a Pan-Asian doctrine, but it was an adequate name for what was taught to Anglisch agents in the Compound.

Breathe in.
I have no name, forget my face;

Breathe out.
I live here in this other place.

And just like that, Carlson ceased to exist, and in his place stood Mari Alkatari, Melanesian-born and raised Anglo who'd been travelling this trading route since he was twelve years old.

He heaved himself over the side of the ship with one hand, landing with the slack and casual air of a seaman, and was about to get to work preparing the cargo to unload. However, something caught his eye.

Ah. They'd been expected soon enough, anyway.

Walking briskly down the docks was the dark of skin, olive-clad, uniformed greeting party.
Every mission he went on, he was reminded of the truth behind the stereotypes of the faceless yellows -
They did not look friendly.

Congressional Aspirant Kumi-Kispe Maru Questions Melanesian Militarization
Bagumbayan
March 17th, 2019

KOMO, Melanesia—once a quiet and sleepy city was first awoken by the thundering boots of Pan-Asiatic marches and their accompanying Missile Trucks, now wakes up to the daily protestation of citizen-activists to put an end to the increasing military presence on their island.

The military stunt conducted by the Federal authority, beginning since last month, was first part of the Secretary-General's initiative to re-arm the nuclear silos within the island, which in itself had been heavily criticized by anti-militarists, pacifists, and detente activists. However, unofficial reports now cite the spike of several long-range ballistic weapons to have exceeded normally mandated regional garrisons.

The statement of the Sixth Administration on the issue had initially been one in accordance to the Jucheist policy of Songun, that the operations conducted were being effected as a reactionary reminder to the United States of Asia's military readiness, after incidents involving convoy raiding suspected of having been American intent (although no concrete proof has been released by either side) were learned of by the Federation. The Secretary-General's strong-arm policy on international trade seemed to coincide with the Head of State's Trotskyist tendency in this instance, as legislative action to increase military funding over the past few months spiked.

Under the leadership of Congressional aspirant Maru this afternoon however, mass student walkouts were effected by the campaigning citizenry. The protests, which have been going-on since the beginning of March, are only expected to get worse. Plans for military testing and exercises to be conducted in several 'key strategic positions' as cited in a recently-publicized report by the Ministry of Defense has involved a large portion of the state's environmentalist advocators as well.

With the continued slander of Pan-Asiatic reputation by Anglomir and Kjalaraa, many fear that investors will seek to rebuke their assets in the Pan-Asiatic States. The question remains prominent, is the strong-armed agenda of the administration one worth pursuing to ensure that investments within the Federation are protected by the infamous Pan-Asiatic Armed Forces, or is the agenda ubiquitous and faulty, scaring-off the foreign sector rather than inviting them?

The Unitary State of Melanesia
Federated People's Republic of Pan-Asiatic States

The agents would be welcomed by sensory details which no textbook could possibly have taught them about. The hot night summers of the Melanesian countryside, the cool swings every once in a while; a luxury to the face of every inhabitant that would come and pass every once in a while. Such cool swings were akin to political change. The scorching mundane everyday life was spiced up by intrigue, a luxury for the highly political people.

The European-raced were scarce on the island, at least, fewer in population than had been in the early days. Where slaves were ported and raw resources extracted now stood the stench of fish in abundance. Where errs were once flogged, now stood statues of a seemingly cryptic, all-too-good-to-be-true revolution. Parks had busts of Marx; the murals of Melanesian revolutionaries and generals decorated the sidewalks.

Should the gaze of the agents wander off, one could set their eyes on State-Flags hanging by the main doorways traditional bamboo households and restaurants; almost akin to the avid American patriotism an ocean away, but with the aesthetics and ideological virtue of what was seemingly an upside-down world.

Truly, this would be the land of the foe; every province was the heartland of Neo-Maoism. Every citizen was a King, every worker was vital. For beyond the jovial and high attitudes of the barkeeps who would host bossa nova auditioners at this time of the night, beyond the friendly down-to-earth playfulness of district officials who would casually explore the commercial streets like any good citizen, and far beyond the tourist-like toilers of the docks, factories, and offices; were ideological zealots who could recede into a political animal when their ideals were threatened, an injustice made, or their family slandered. Such was the Pan-Asiatic States.

The agents would be surprised how casually they would be treated by the residents and villagemen. For them, white men were tourists. They heard not of the atrocities and senseless blaming of capital howlers; in the provinces, everyone was content.

That is, so long as their cover was not blown.

A portmaster would soon approach them, one whose gaze was as clandestine as the agents. One with eyes eccentric to the general residency.

The portmaster was a rough man, a fat Melanesian local; educated, for sure, but with a brutish personality about him. The agents could not have been informed about the details of the transaction for sure, other than what they were tasked to fulfill.

"Like we agreed upon.", muttered the portmaster. He handed Agent Carlson a plain black suitcase. Its components: a holotablet containing every piece of information they needed about life on Melanesia, from a group of co-conspirators yet unknown and a slip. Perhaps it was from the Neo-Kuomintang, perhaps another more niched for conspiracy. The slip contained an address, printed in fine text:

Storage Facility 25F, Svyatoslavovich Ltd. Storage Compound, Tanna Avenue, Timor-Leste

Further orders to set-up camp there were all included with the holotablet. Before they knew it, the portmaster had disappeared.

Carlson blinked a couple of times, and shook his head. That had gone far smoother than he had expected. As he looked around, the men of the crew who were not YKB agents - distractors - continued to work. It became apparent now who were his comrades in the field. They all acknowledged their team members with a nod, one of understanding of the danger they faced here - but also, the opportunity.

The first thing to do was to get away from the docks. Covertly, the Anglisch infiltrators made their way down the bustling waterways and slowly onto the coast. Bright lights from the lively town illuminated the night sky, the thousands of bugs and mosquitoes seemingly only an annoyance to these out of place westerners. Carlson resisted the urge to slap them off. It was important to act as if he had spent a decent portion of his life here, according to his backstory. He sighed, and wondered to what extent Anglisch agents ever end up using the bloody 400+ page documents on their 'identity' on missions such as these. His eyes flickered back from the creepy-crawly dotted sky to the streets and markets in front of him. No matter. He would do the Homeland proud. The Anglisch men began to split up.

The other agents mingled and dispersed with the crowd effortlessly, all of them disassociated from the others but moving in the same direction. They needed a spot to examine the holotablet. Eventually, Carlson noticed a fellow Anglo clandestinely slip into a dark outhouse behind a boardwalk kiosk. Without faltering, he headed toward it as well, black briefcase clicking, as if he had intended to go to this place all along. He opened the ramshackle wooden door with a creak, and stepped inside. The two nodded at each other. Without a word, Carlson sat down, albeit being a bit cramped, and opened up the briefcase.

Click.

The blue luminance of the holotablet cast shadows across their faces. Hesistantly, he stared at the screen, acquainting himself, before beginning to explore the information. It wasn't too long before he found what he was looking for.

Tanna Avenue, Timor-Leste.

He spoke to the other agent for the first time since entering the outhouse in harsh Anglisch.
"Get the word around to the others. Tomorrow, we move further into the states. We have a train to catch."

Jules Sevier Long-Range Missile Detachment Base, Fort Frontier, Frontier, Western Section March 20th, 2019

Image

The Jules Sevier Long-Range Missile Detachment Base, and the Fort Frontier complex as a whole, is the crown jewel of the West American Treaty Organization.

Here, are stored non-nuclear variants of Mahtah intercontinental ballistic missiles, Firestorm intercontinental-range cruise missiles -launchable from mobile platforms or from a hardened facility- and many more kinds of ballistic missiles.

When these missiles were first placed here more than a half century ago, it was hoped that they would serve as a testament to Brukean resolve in the fight against communism- standing shoulder to shoulder with the Royal Republic's greatest ally, the United States.

When Western Section declared independence in 1980 as a socialist state -taking Fort Frontier for its own- those same missiles were turned on the Royal Republic. The colony intended to destroy the colonizer. In those dark days, the government knew that protecting the Home Provinces would be a life-or-death struggle. It would seem an impossible task, to defeat an insurgent regime hell-bent on Bruke's destruction- and with the means to do it, thanks to sabotage from within (as was discovered years after the fact).

Tamru Negasi took the task head-on, serving with distinction as Security Minister from 1980 to 2003- throughout the bloody, brutal conflicts that were the Wars of the West. When the country needed him again, as the ripples from Western Section destabilized the rest of the region, again he answered the call, serving as head of the Royal and National Intelligence Service from 2005 to 2009- overseeing the work which led to the end of the Outer Region Secessionist Crisis and the Roseland War.

Now the threat was no longer disgruntled colonists, sectarian paramilitaries, or even those wicked men who would later be known as the Corporatists.

He was now Prime Minister, and the threat was unknown.

The Royal Republic tried to reach out to the world beyond its traditional allies: beyond its fellow members of the West American Union, beyond even the United States. It had done its upmost to abide by its own expectations as it reached out to the wider international community.

Yet the Brukean people watched on in horror as the People's Revolutionary Front- Defiant somehow escaped their Hügelland hovels and headed to Diyaristan, hoping to spread the revolution there and develop an international network with which it could regain its former strength. They watched on in horror as a vile fascist regime sent as-yet-unseen weapons of war to attack the homeland, demanding immediate surrender. Every man, woman, and child was evacuated, in accordance with plans drawn up decades ago out of fear of nuclear Armageddon. But that was not the end of the trouble: they watched in horror as Elvectica, with its advanced technology, was threatened by a coup which was the work of an authoritarian monarch, in sheltering dissidents- Bruke risked annihilation in the defense of democracy.

The United States, turning ever inward and not wanted to risk conflict so close to home, did nothing, with the European Union and Australia following suit.

Only the Royal Republic's fellow West American states came to aid it in its time of need, and together they stood resolute against capricious, tyrannical regimes who cared for nothing but conquest.

The Prime Minister did not want to be caught unprepared for the next invasion attempt- and he was sure there would be another. On his visit to Jules Sevier, he was accompanied by Nebiyou Gizaw, the Minister of Security, and General Zemichael Demeke, Chairman of the General Staff of the Royal Republic Armed Forces. The trio were joined by their counterparts from Western Section, the Federal Republic of Regions, and Roseland.

Several invasion attempts in short succession tend to make people worried about war. Accordingly, the Brukean military budget had been quadrupled, so much so that critics charged the planned buildup would come at the expense of social services and the safety net.

This visit was to view the testing of several offensive and defensive systems, to be deployed, as always, around the West American Defensive Perimeter. As the third of the tests were completed, there were three short siren blasts and one long one. For the past few days, tests had been ongoing, so sirens were nothing new.

The International Satellite and Missile Defense system had recently been upgraded, consistent with long-planned but until-now uncompleted efforts.

Just in time it seemed- because the Pan-Asiatic States were apparently re-arming nuclear silos with long-range ballistic missiles, pointed at the Americas- and by extension, the West American Union.

Only a few years before, West American Treaty Organization member states had debated amongst themselves whether the Long-Range Missile Detachment should be scrapped, along with the International Satellite and Missile Defense, as relics of a more perilous age.

To have missiles of their own pointed towards the East (which had been the original plan when Jules Sevier and the other bases were first built, and standing WATO policy up to today) would not be conductive to easing tensions. The decision was made: the L-RMD was to be stood down, and an offer of hosting a summit would be made, in the hopes of spurring some kind of detente between East and West.

Joint Statement from the member states of the West American Union:

We are deeply concerned at the prospect of Pan-Asiatic deployment of long-range ballistic missiles pointed at the United States- doing so would inevitably put the whole of the Americas at risk, the West American Union included.

We have, at this critical juncture, chosen not to have our forces in a state of prolonged readiness- as a sign of good faith and good will.

The security element of the West American Union, the West American Treaty Organization, at our request, will make sure that the Long-Range Missile Detachment stands down- the first time this has occurred since the program was created nearly 50 years ago.

With the goal of facilitating a lasting peace for the world at large, we will make our governments available to host a summit between the Pan-Asiatic States and the United States of America.

Signed,

President Bereket Abera of the Royal Republic of Bruke

President Jérémie Gagne of the State-Republic of Western Section

President Guy Romilly of the State of Roseland

Subject: Joint Statement of the Western American Union

SONGUN—an ideological crusade that is derived from the Four Military Lines policy implemented 1991, first in Korea, then throughout a nation learned of the unprepared-for catastrophes dealt by the Third Pacific War. The doctrine's aim was to arm the entire population, fortify the entire Federation, train every soldier to become a cadre and modernize the entire military sector. It is the idea that national independence, sovereignty and prosperity is dependent on being organized and well-armed. It is a tradition of this Federated People's Republic.

Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary! That is the dictate of Karl Marx. The Kautskyite advocacy of “disarmament”, which is addressed to the present governments of the imperialist Great Powers, is the most vulgar opportunism, it is bourgeois pacifism, which actually—in spite of the “good intentions” of the sentimental Kautskyites—serves to distract the workers from the revolutionary struggle. For this advocacy seeks to instil in the workers the idea that the present bourgeois governments of the imperialist powers are not bound to each other by thousands of threads of finance capital and by scores or hundreds of corresponding secret treaties (i.e., predatory, plundering treaties, preparing the way for imperialist war).

We reject any attempt to disarm revolutionary, Pan-Asiatic society. The Sixth Administration hereby inform the general public that a General Deliberation to concede or not was initiated at exactly 5:00 this afternoon, 21st March, in the People's Year 2019. The West American Treaty Organization's good intentions disregard the diplomatic, class-based disposition of the Pan-Asiatic States. An overwhelming 7 out 9 State-Presidents have voted non-concession, and to continue, instead, the militarization, training, drills, and experimentation of military assets in the Melanesian islands:

Melanesian Militarization Ceasure and Desistance; Executive Decree of 2019

(Aff.: Initiation of talks, Neg.: Continual militarization)

Ms. Maria Leonor "Leni" Gerona Robredo, TSSR: Nay
    Mr. Kerika-Rebia Kasi, USM: Nay
    Mr. Joko Widodo, FNN: Yea
    Ms. Mani Rojumanong, TIPRI: Nay
    Ms. Cho Nandar, BSSR: Nay
Mr. Nguyễn Phú Trọng, TSSR: Yea
    Mr. Xi Jinping, China: Nay
    Mr. Kim Jong-Un, DPRK: Nay
    Mr. Kazuo Shii, JSSR: Nay

Special notice must be given to the negative stance taken by the State-President of the Unitary State of Melanesia, Kerika-Rebia Kasi, who, under the powers bestowed upon her by the People, has initiated this special deliberation in the first place, leading the opposition to the propounded antithesis. Any concession or compromise of the Pan-Asiatic States towards its WMD programs, any foreign-influenced demilitarization, nor any quasijudicial action taken towards the disarmament of the Federal military will not be tolerated by the constituents of this democratic government.

With the goal of securing the sovereign interests for the people of Asia at large, we strongly oppose any summit short of the United States' admission and consequent apology of their plots to sabotage Pan-Asiatic trade in the Atlantic. We will continue to arm the proletariat for the sake of independent self-realization. We will continue to host Naval and Aerial exercises in the regions deemed strategically compromisable by the Ministry of Defense.

Finally, we demand that all nations concerned respect the democratic process of the Pan-Asiatic States. We stand resolute.

Wèi Rénmín Fúwù!

The Unitary State of Melanesia
Federated People's Republic of Pan-Asiatic States

It had been 5 days since last the agents had checked in with the homeland. Carlson and the others had covertly caught the train to Timor-Leste; or so he assumed. He, of course, had no way of keeping in touch, or knowing of the others' whereabouts - his only link to the homeland was a subtle paging device, encrypted to the extreme, and only wired for one address: the YKB Headquaters back in Yurk.

Cosak Tyjik had pulled the short straw to stay behind in Melanesia, and find local politicians sympathetic to the cause. He was armed with only limited briefing; the others had taken the holo-tablet with them. Working off his memory, and that of which he had picked up from locals, he found himself in a fairly indiscreet pub. Innocuously, he sat, hunched over at the bar, gripping a glass with both hands. If there was anything an Anglo could do, it was hold his liquor - but he was forbidden from even that, unless the situation require it. No, he was drinking some odd local concoction that was supposedly non-alcholic. "Revitalising juice", the baggy shirted bartender had told him. "Cleanses the toxins from your body".

The only toxins he needed cleansing of was the filthy Asian scum everywhere he looked. It was sickening, infectious. He'd been keeping up with the news, and heard of the declaration of commitment to re-armament by the States. It was not a good sign. With a sigh, he directed his gaze across the bar, and outside the window. A small dog was playing with a boy in the street, as many straw-hatted traders passed them by. He checked his watch. Resolving to stay there another 2 hours before moving to another pub he'd heard the local politicians frequent, he settled back in to his position on the stool.

"Uh, oi! Bartender?" he called, in somewhat clunky dialect. Ordering drinks hadn't exactly been high on the list of priority dialogue to learn back at the academy. "Another health juice, please."

It was going to be another long day.

Carlson checked the paper slip again. This was the place. Looking down the street, he saw a couple of familiar white faces loitering around. Good. The plan had come through. On the train, they had agreed to split up for a couple of days to divert suspicion, before rendevouzing at the Compound, or at least, on Tanna Avenue. He counted three men so far; one leaning against a pole, hands in pockets, dressed in simple local attire; another slowly meandering up the street, clasped knuckles behind his back; the last emerging from a ramshackle looking building, which he could only assume was some sort of bar or Inn. They had resolved to find their own accomodation, as far away from each other as possible, but still within reasonable range. For security purposes, of course, they were not to know the location of the others.

Carlson himself was putting on a bit of an act to prolong time, taking much longer than necessary to remove a pebble from his shoe and retie the laces. After examining the sole from every possible angle, then once again donning the footwear, he checked his watch briefly.

No sense waiting longer. With a discreet nod to the others, they began a clandestine, brisk walk from their various positions on the street. One goal. One place.

It was time to crack this bad boy open.

The Brukeville Times

For the Betterment of the Royal City and the Vindication of the Throne of Menelik

The View of the TImes: Government correctly balances economic benefits with security concerns in its approach to Brukean relations with the Pan-Asiatic States

There has been ever-increasing debate among policymakers and the general public over the direction of Brukean foreign policy given the leadership vacuum in the Americas, European indecisiveness, and an ascendant Asia.

In the latter region, the Pan-Asiatic States is clearly the dominant power by any measure. And given its openness to its trade and foreign investment, there are opportunities for Brukean firms in this astonishingly large market.

The Royal Chamber of Commerce has estimated that the Asia-Pacific region would likely be our largest market, whether in terms of imports or exports. The Royal Society for Chemical Manufacturers has identified potential opportunities for the export of biofuel and associated commodities, along with synthetic materials. The Institute for Creative and Cultural Progress predicted that the output of film, television, and music in the Tagalong, Mandarin, and Russian languages, which has long been stagnant, would increase to meet potential demand. The Automakers’ Association has noted that its members would be keen on opening larger manufacturing plants than can be operated at home. But foreign policy should not be decided by the interests of the business community alone, as recent events have shown. The reason of state transcends mere private interests and must reflect the interests of the citizenry as a whole- chief among which is national security.

Our first impression of the Pan-Asiatic States came from its involvement in Diyaristan, where until very recently the military was deployed to assist the democratic government in counterterrorism operations and combat the People’s Revolutionary Front- Defiant. Threatening our armed forces as they tried to stop the evacuation of the PRF- D’s ally, the Communist Party of Diyaristan, was an act of extreme hostility. To its credit, Neo-Manila has realized this and subsequently apologized.

The opening of a Brukean embassy has significantly eased tensions, and the Government rightly desires to use the opportunity to build better relations. However, we cannot be expected to move forward with this process if there continues to be hostility between the Pan-Asiatic States and the United States, who has been and remains one of our closest partners. The recent deployment of intercontinental ballistic missiles is not just an act of saber-rattling, but a very real threat to the whole of the Americas- and with the WAU's offer to host a summit between the two superpowers rejected, the West American region must be prepared for the worst.

The uptick in the military budget, mirrored by increased spending by our partners, has bolstered regional defensive capabilities, the prominent sign of which is the International Satellite and Missile Defense System- which according to WATO now has a much longer range as compared to previous versions of the system. As the RBAF has seen time and time again, facilities are just as important as arms. The Borderlands Military Base has been restored to decolonization-era capacity, and work has begun on a new military base at Llastres which will expand upon the converted and/or retrofitted facilities already in use- with facilities for all of the armed services. Taking into consideration the scope of investments by all WATO member states, and plans for substantial new spending in the future, Brukeans can rest assured knowing that they will be protected.

With the federal government finally under unified control, the Royal Republic has chosen the right path of remaining vigilant in case of attack while allowing for a much-desired return to normalcy. Despite present challenges, we remain hopeful that there will soon be a return to the path of peace, along with the prospect of deepened commercial ties with the Pan-Asiatic States.

The Dubian

News from the Dynamic City, for the Dynamic City

From the Editorial Board: The Royal Republic must continue to pursue closer relations with the Pan-Asiatic States- for the sake of world peace, a green economic order, scientific advancement, and cross-cultural understanding

Much has been made of current tensions between the United States and the Pan-Asiatic States, especially with the deployment of intercontinental ballistic missiles by the latter.

Hawkish figures in Parliament have argued that not only should we reverse the recent decision to stand down the Long-Range Missile Detachment, but that we should invest in a new generation of intercontinental ballistic missiles. While the Government has declined to refute these criticisms thus far, we are confident in saying that with the newly upgraded International Satellite and Missile Defense System on-line, such spending is both unnecessary and counterproductive. A build-up of missiles or other weapons would mean a return to the sort of militarism that led to the decolonization conflicts- which would certainly not ease tensions. The general level of investment in the armed forces, as already planned, is more than enough to keep Bruke safe- so much so that one could argue that this will only be possible with draconian cuts to social services.

Our country has shown a strong commitment to world peace by offering to serve as an honest broker between the two superpowers. Despite the rejection of talks, we are confident that there will soon be a change of heart- the risk of a nuclear exchange is reason enough to do so. We are sure that there is a strong sentiment among the Pan-Asian people in favor of peace, and we would even venture to say that there is substantial sentiment which opposes interventionism- as our own Kidan Zalelew witnessed just a few months ago. If the President and the Prime Minister would only remember the remarkably short time it took to establish diplomatic ties and open an embassy, and the positive response to these steps from Neo-Manila, they would realize that fears of a missile strike targeting the Americas are overblown.

While another world war is unlikely, there is a looming threat that no country can tackle alone: climate change. This requires a complete re-ordering of the international economic order away from dependence on fossil fuels- accomplished in large part by the deployment of green technology. As a world leader in the use and development of biofuels, Bruke has completed the long and arduous process of phasing out the use of fossil fuels in transportation- and is close to eliminating its use from industry. While the West American market has allowed the biofuel and synfuel industries to form -and grow to their current size- it is no substitute for larger markets. This will not only be good for the Brukean economy -the Royal Chamber of Commerce said as much in its most recent report on the bioenergy sector- but good for the planet as well. Greater competition with firms from Brazil and the European Union will inevitably lead to energy for transport, power, and other needs that is both clean and affordable. In a similar vein, sales of hybrids and conventional motor vehicles -which in this country have long used the Stirling engine- will surely lead to a positive shift in global transportation.

Along with a change in the international economic order, there must also be a change in international scientific cooperation. The Government is on the record as supporting any and all research in mitigation, adaptation, and geoengineering. Potential areas of joint research include solar radiation management, rainwater storage, bio-energy with carbon capture and storage, and cloud seeding. Our universities and other research hubs have already made progress in these areas with the help of partner institutions in Western Section, the Federal Republic of Regions, and Roseland- having support from their Asian counterparts would only increase the pace of new breakthroughs, whether in regards to climate change or other issues.

There ought to be friendly relations between the Royal Republic and the Pan-Asiatic States considering that there are rather large Asian-Brukean communities dating back to the Principality era. Nearly two decades before independence, as people from all over the world swarmed the gold fields of California, those who trekked further inland to seek gold found it in abundance throughout the Hills of the Antelope, in what is now Wusite County. Chinese miners, driven out by Americans, were welcomed by Prince Bruce, along with the then-dispossessed Californios. In a later era, when American farmers sought to exclude Japanese and Filipino immigrants from the bounties of the Golden State, the Kingdom welcomed them with open arms. Each community has been long-established, and are as Brukean as those of us whose ancestors arrived from feudal Ethiopia. History tells us that if we would only consider our commonalities rather than our differences, there would be peace not just between the two superpowers, but every other country.

We believe that under no circumstances should the Long-Range Missile Detachment be re-activated- at least not until this present crisis is over. Now is the time to work towards a peaceful, flourishing, and unified world.

The Commodore

With faith, with charity, with hope- we will carry on

To our readers: Beware of Greeks -or anyone else!- bearing gifts

As usual, the newspapers of record have failed to include the good people of Central Province in a conversation of national importance, this time about relations with the Pan-Asiatic States.

While the people of the Heartland are often divided on many things, we are all united by a desire to see a better quality of life for ourselves and our children- and that starts with economic opportunity. It is no secret that our economy has always lagged behind other provinces. Deindustrialization is not some trend to be studied in the abstract- it is our lived experience.

It took until last year, after decades of stagnation, for our economy to have consistently positive growth. Recycling plants were re-opening, along with chemical plants which had long been shuttered. The Toll Road had been widened, allowing for more goods to get to the Borderlands Highway and out of the country. The truckers of Wusite County saw their pay increase to a level not seen since the early 1980s. All of this achieved was because we -collectively, as a country- chose to invest in a place that badly needed investment.

This growth, welcome as it is, is fragile. The restoration of our economy was only possible because of increased demand from the greater region- Western Section chemical firms, Roseland machinery manufacturers, and FRR biofuel refineries all needed our goods and services. This was part of the virtuous cycle that began with the formation of the West American Union in 2000. For all its flaws, we can at least say that West American integration was mutually beneficial. But this is not true of all economic relationships- and that is what the politicians and the talking heads will not admit.

We will say what the representatives in Parla, civil service personnel, and media commentators refuse to say: our economy is far too dependent on the United States. Since independence, we have depended on American consumption of our goods, American tourists to visit our historical sites and places of entertainment, and American investment first to industrialize and then to develop the high technology sector.

To have commercial ties to the Pan-Asiatic States would mean economic devastation for Central Province, and a reversal of the progress we have made only so recently. We cannot stop consumers who would readily buy from sweatshops which make cheap -even if shoddy- goods by exploiting their workers, or our industrial firms that would become addicted to its immense natural resources- undermining our strict recycling practices which have made our country so self-reliant.

If peace comes -and that is still up in the air- and if our Government manages to negotiate a treaty whereby we open up to Pan-Asiatic goods and services, we will at best have exchanged one unequal relationship for another.

We say this in no uncertain terms: under no circumstances should the Government allow our firms and consumers to entangle themselves with a country where labor is exploitable, goods are dirt-cheap, and respect for the environment is lacking. To do otherwise would be economic suicide, and bring hardship to our province’s struggling communities.

The compound was a very secure and isolated facility, despite being at the regional capital. Timor-Leste, once a colonial heartland, was now a modern complex; with high-rise estates and commercial districts, a concrete jungle. The compound was akin to a hangar, with 20 or so isolated facilities, each uniformly 85-foot tall and 100 foot wide, seemingly in the shape of aircraft hangars neighbouring each other. The compound was surrounded by a tall wall, blockaded on all sides with shattered bottle glass, makeshift barbed wire. The compound was inconspicuous but large. Nobody dared mind what went on inside. The doors remained closed at all times.

Commonly, these facilities were for state-enterprises and foreign companies to store goods coming from across the Pacific. Retail stores, online shopping; they were neatly placed in those neighbouring facilities, each guarded by an automated system privately contracted from a foreign defense company of unknown origin. It had been assured, however, that those behind the screens would not interfere. They were either well-compensated, or gravely intimidated. Each warehouse could only be unlocked by a special keycard, included with the case given to them at the port.

The facility designated to the agents was unlike those musty ones surmounting theirs. Theirs was an operational headquarters, a home away from home; with rooms and structure. Anything and everything they needed were safely tucked behind corrugated iron. An entire armory of high-powered rifles, bed spaces with neat and clean linings, a communal kitchen; Anglomir's proud commodities. All had been arranged so they may do their job quickly, efficiently, and safely.

At this time of the month, protests had begun to calm down due to legal clamp-downs and organizing incapabilities; but the sentiment remained. Army personnel, grunts, wandered around during the night, off-duty. Sailors on liberty took to heavy drinking in the taverns. Young, instigative university radicals continued their distribution of pamphlets.

It may not take a while to put-together a contingent for uprising.

A strong wind passed by under shady grey clouds, and a terrible thunder shook the island. Rain poured unto the urban landscape. While the agents explored the grounds, the floors of the compound were suddenly littered of pamphlets; blown over by the tropic air. The print of an austronesian black man with a beard, stared at onlookers above from the scattered ink-stained parchments.

Anglomirian Provisional HQ, Timor-Leste
Federated People's Republic of Pan-Asiatic States

The Pan-Asian flag may have been flying over the compound, but the activities taking place beneath it were of another inclination.

The agents had been busy. Working quickly and efficiently, the Anglischmen had voted to send only a minimalist, encrypted message to the Fatherland from the comms room: "Contact made. Supplies obtained. Wait for 25th. Following that, they had spread out to divide and conquer. Before they had gone to bed that night, the 12 agents who had made it to Timor-Leste gathered around a table, in what they had jury-rigged as their designated 'war-room'. A long and sturdy oaken table adorned the centre of the area, with a projector shining maps of the surrounding localities and suburbs onto the wall. A couple of cords dotted the ground, and a cabinet with paper and pens was their go-to for note-taking and file-making.

The meeting was clandestine and brief. It was decided that two agents would occupy the HQ on a rotational basis - one to man the communications station and distribute live information and news to those in the field, as well as track the movements of law enforcement to the best of their ability, and the other to comb through news reports and the wealth of information on the area to devise effective strategies for an insurgency. With that, they retreated to their beds - familiar, utilitarian, and clean. It was nice to feel at home.

At 6:00am sharp the next morning, the agents were already in the streets. Some armed themselves with the wealth of propaganda leaflets they had been provided with in the compound, and worked to distribute them to everyone and anyone who would even hesitate when approached. Fast talking, quick hands, and a few well placed references to infamous local incidents between Federal Government operatives and the public went much further than they had originally thought. Before long, posters were springing up all over town, nailed into construction support beams, taped on doors, and covering windows:

    DOWN WITH CAPITAL TYRANTS!
    ...
NO TO WAR! YES TO PEACE!
    ...
OUR ASIA IS A PEACEFUL ASIA!
    ...
FERNANDO-LAWRENCIO IS AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!

The messages varied, but the message was the same. Murmurs began to spread through the backalleys - who was responsible for this? Maybe they had a point?
Capitalising on the sentiments, the agents were already found in every local pub; one could not go for a drink without witnessing a rowdy entanglement of off-duty soldiers, local labourers, and businessmen declaring their intention to bring a stop to the menace of the current government. From the back of the neon coloured bar, soft-spoken white men would look on, satisfied, and quietly marvel at how effectively a tactical conversation with the right drunk people could escalate a situation. Sometimes, the agents themselves would partake in the fray, making increasingly outrageous anti-military statements with each drink, each one to a thunderous cacophony of table-thumping and knee-slapping in solidarity.

Back in the war-room, the agents had been stock-taking their weaponry. Soon, particularly hardline anti-militants were being ironically trained in high-power weaponry in preparation for the strike on the 25th. To their own surprise, some agents found themselves genuinely making wary friendships with some of their recruits; perhaps these Asians weren't all bad? Within hours, the rough shape of a small paramilitary band of rioters had been formed. They could shoot straight, stand in line, and listen to tactical commands. Of course, civilian trainees, however angry with their government, were nothing compared full-fledged soldiers, and indeed, the Anglos had a plan for that.

Inserting themselves into the concrete jungle had seen many of the men encounter an off-duty soldier. A fake military backstory later, and a shared reminisce of a battle only one of them had really attended, the agents saw themselves in the good graces of many low-level military personnel. Some sold their weapons for a drink; some for a price. Some joined the cause with full intent of putting their armaments to use. It was kept on the down-low amongst the ranks, but word spread amongst the grunts, and before long, many armoured men were helping train the forces in the compound, mostly out of spite for their superiors.

It had been only three days, but an uprising was in place.

A sense of foreboding had fallen over the city. Most inhabitants of the high-rise forest knew what was happening today - visiting farmers and white-collars who were complete strangers not long ago now shared the quiet nods of compatriots. Where this insurgency had come from, most could not say, but from the shadows of Tanna Avenue, the Anglisch infiltrators looked on in a tense appreciation for what they had achieved. It had been hard work, but today was the day of the strike.

Maru was the name championed by the people, and revolution was their mandate.
