TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF NSCAA

The 10th NSCAA Basketball tournament will be tipping off, and while we haven’t heard a whole lot of information from teams yet, we still expect a lot of excitement. This will be a special edition as The Arena at the Proving Grounds in Tundra Falls will be hosting the Final Four. After their outstanding run last year as a University, and winning the national championship this season, things are certainly looking up. Selfishly, I am most excited about Pocono City University qualifying for this tournament for the first time. The outstanding play of the three starting freshman, Dylan Chase, Blake Duncan, and Connor Hammel is what propelled them to this tournament, and if that trend continues, then they might have a national championship in their future. So glad to see them finally being better then the nerds of Pocono City Tech. Well, I don’t much more time to write now, so I will see you all later.

“Tell Cyan Industries we are very happy that alumni are helping out the cause. I would’ve went to Southport without the promised goods.” Chase replied.

“That is to be split three ways between you, Blake, and Connor.” Taylor insisted.

“Oh sweetie, don’t worry. We can split it three ways, I’m getting more then what they are getting with you, anyway.”

“Yes, Dylan, but no one can know about the money. PCU can get in serious trouble if it gets found out that Cyan Industries is paying you like this.” Taylor said.

“We have the hottest Rocket Report journalist on our side,” Dylan said, “Who else would break the story? Now, let’s forget that part, and enjoy the rest of our agreement.”

SOME INFORMATION ABOUT LISANDER COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Eligibility

In Lisander there is no Draft and access to professional basketball occurs differently depending on the team. There is a rule, inherited and maintained from the old "Amateur Senior Championship", which says that "all players on the court must have completed academic studies in order to maintain the high level of sportsmanship".

For example, at Académica Athletica Portia, a Superliga team formed and sponsored by Universidade Portia alumni, there is permanent space for youngsters who excel at UP. These have the possibility of joining the professional team, and may even have contracts signed in advance. This is the case of Marion Zimmer, Shooting Guard in his last year of University. He'll join the AAP as soon as he finishes this season of the NSCAA.

In other cases, players over the age of twenty-three, already hired by a team, enter college to meet the required criteria of graduation. Although they can register for the Basketball Division and play in the National Academic League Championship, they are not eligible for the NSCAA. The number of amateur athletes who have chosen this path in search of the dream to become a professional has been reasonably high in the first seasons of the Superleague, however, this number is decreasing, after all the number of people studying after the usual age is decreasing.

The rule states that all players on the court must have completed academic studies, but says nothing about "must have participated in College Basketball". Thus, there are still those who are (or have been) in university but did not participate in university teams, preferring to be in the basketball teams of the teams themselves, as well as those who participate in selective after finishing university. These are not that relevant to the information because they are not registered with the Basketball League Division of the National Academic League, do not participate in the NSCAA, except in cases of extreme necessity, for which they can be specially allowed.

Adaptations

The University Basketball in Lisander adopts the same rules as international pro basketball. To comply with the standard rules of the College Basketball, there are some modifications in the rules of the game: The period of the shot clock increase to meet the standard of the College; The key is reduced to the width of the centre circle and Mixed teams can now be assembled as an alternative to adding unregistered players. The latter measure is frowned upon in Lisander, since lisanderian men and women dispute most ball and territorial sports separated by gender.

Bobcats start strong

Belle Haven State's basketball team have more than held their own over the first few rounds of the multiverse competition which sees them squaring off against schools from 14 other nations.

Having swept their first two opponents, and having a bye in round three, the Bobcats dropped a one point decision at the Markham Center against fellow first timers Cavsar University from Drawkland. Coach Chris Meriweather has been pleased with the performance so far. "The team have shown the intensity and commitment that we had last year, and we didn't have the rust or nerves I thought might be a factor. We played at a significant disadvantage physically against Cavsar, but still had a chance to get the W. Their height overall was not something we are used to, but I think we adjusted pretty well as the game went on."

Meriweather also weighed in the effort shown by the UAC schools who are also involved in the 10th season of the tournament. "We certainly can put aside our rivalries to hope that the others (Coolville State, Endover and Osheana State) do well against the teams they face. So far, I think we have all done justice to our country's talent level and level of play with the results that have come through."

A brief overview of the UAC and the role of sports in college life in Baker Park.

The Universities Athletic Coalition of the Commonwealth is the governing body for intercollegiate sports, as well as the sponsor of several Olympic sports that lack national governing bodies. It is a full member of the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth and abides by the regulations of the NS Olympic Committee relative to eligibility for athletes.

Founded in 1929, it includes all 35 degree granting 4 year institutions of higher learning, who subscribe to the rules and policies laid down.

The concept of "scholarships" for athletic performance is not recognized here; any student who participates in a varsity athletic competition can have expenses related to the cost of their education subsidized by the institution. Higher education is funded extensively through the national government, so the cost of a 4 year college education is not an onerous burden financially for most families.

1st year students are ineligible for participation, except under certain circumstances, although they can practice and participate in team activities. "Redshirting" is another idea that is not practiced here; a student who is injured and unable to participate may ask for a waiver for an extra year of eligibility, which is granted more often than not.

Intercollegiate athletics are enormously popular spectator events in Baker Park, but the extent to which the "business" of sport is emphasized is quite minimal. Seasons are relatively short, coaching and support staffs are smaller than one might expect, and extra revenue (TV/media, sponsorships, etc.) is not large by standards that other nations might experience.

The NSCAA is back once again! Last time may have been a dud but it's time for Drawkland to make another stand.

This season, DNSN will be keeping up an unofficial and inexhaustive ranking for the Top 25 teams in the NSCAA, as well as highlighting key moments that you, as a Drawkian fan, will enjoy. Around every 4 games, we'll publish a new episode, and keep track of any important storylines as they occur. We hope you enjoy!

Our rankings are based on wins, point differential, conference strength, quality of wins, quality of nation, and other hidden factors. While they are no means perfect or meant to be The Rankings for the NSCAA, they are certainly a good starting point for those trying to identify the most solid teams out there. Especially if you're biased towards Drawkians. It's important to note that nations from the Eternal and Woodlands Conferences are not currently ranked, as none of them have played any games yet. These conferences, starting their games later and ending later, will have their teams integrated into the ranks once their games begin.

In a far first is Sadeg State University, of Drawkland. They're back baby! With a massive point differential, blowing out decent teams left and right, they're certainly a force to be reckoned with. Will they go undefeated? Nahh, but they're certainly looking like the cream of the crop. Pocono City Tech of Newmanistan is also putting in similar work, but their point output hasn't necessarily been up to snuff with Sadeg State. In third comes the University of Tundra Falls, also from Newmanistan, who managed to take down Drawkland's Old Mountain University on the road by 41 points. While Old Mountain isn't the biggest Drawkian threat, a victory like that cannot be understated. They also, helped by that game, have over 100 points in differential. Outside of the top 3, nobody else has achieved such numbers yet.

The first of the sub-100 schools is, surprisingly, the Free Republics' University of Republica, who managed a 19-point victory over Keisler College, another Newmanistani school. To be fair, this was a home game for the University of Republica, but Keisler is still the second-best team in the conference even after that blowout defeat. The first Dagan school on the list is the University of Concord Heights, from the Flying Drawk Conference. They aren't the only undefeated team in that conference, but their play so far has been superior. Pocono City University is 3-0 in that conference but they're lower in the ranks due to having played one less game so far. The final undefeated team in the Flying Drawk is the Northern Natanians and Nosts University, but their play has been a little shakier. +30 is the lowest differential of any undefeated team and lower than most ranked 1-loss teams.

Cavsar University is the second Drawkian school to be ranked, also undefeated and residing in the Pink 15 Conference. While they haven't been dropping teams left and right with no resistance like their fellow Pinkers in Pocono City Tech, they've assembled a good run so far and managed a last-second win against Baker Park's Belle Haven State, who were projected to be a decent team and are still in a good position in their conference despite the one loss and one bye. Loudon Empire University, another Newmanistani school, is the top school in the Big Seven Eight conference. They aren't the only undefeated team either, as there is a good amount of solid teams in the B78. In fact, that's why you'll see the 3-0 B78 team in Brattleboro Tech only a few ranks lower. They've handed Baker Park's University of Endover their only loss of the season so far, but Endover is still a solid squad with a +88 differential and ranked. The final ranked team in the conference is North Magootz State, the Griffins of Lycrabon, but their shoddy opponents played and point diff is what sends them lower in the ranks despite 0 losses.

Hampton Island managed to sneak into the Top 10 with the surprisingly powerful Madison College residing in the Royal Conference. While they haven't beaten "anybody" yet, they still have scored a respectable amount of points and lead their conference. Lower on the list you'll see the crop of solid undefeated nations which had an early bye, including Brat Tech (mentioned earleir), Corinth City University, Drawk Corps University, Concord Heights Beauty School, and Pocono City University (also mentioned earlier).

By now we're approaching the high teens and 20s, so these are more middling but still powerful schools that have yet to prove themselves but can still make a splash. One such school is Karnavati College, one of two ranked schools from newcomers Pratapgadh. Residing in the Pink 15, they have an undefeated record and a solid point differential, but they haven't played anybody major yet. Plus, as a school from an unproven nation, it's hard to gauge how well they'll turn out to be. If they keep winning, and slot wins against the better teams in the conference, they could become a higher ranked threat.

New Lakeland University of Cassadaigua were definitely a team to be feared in the preseason, but they suffered an unlikely 1-point loss to Universidade do Sudoeste (Lisander) on the road - a .500 team. Perhaps with wins against better opponents they can erase this blot on their record and move up in the ranks. The 4-0 University of Filindostan don't have a very good differential, nor a solid docket of teams played so far, but the 4-0 record is hard to ignore and why they're obviously in the Top 20.

Then we have the multitude of teams from the United 15 Conference. The United 15 have a whole bunch of 3-1 teams moving around the top of their conference. Corinth City, being undefeated but having an early bye, are the highest in our ranks. The rest are in this tough situation of "everyone has beaten one another." Banija's only ranked, the University of Moravica, are atop the U15 one-lossers because their only loss is to the still-undefeated Corinth City. Mar Sara Tech's only loss is to Moravica, and Southport University's only loss is to Mar Sara. The University of Northbury, who rounds out the Top 25, lost to Southport. It's like a beautiful food chain, and so far, the United 15 is looking like the strongest conference (that is all subject to change, but right now it seems like it'll be the bloodiest fight for the top).

The final school we haven't discussed is Maharana Pratap University, from Pratapgadh. While they're 3-0 in the Five Star Conference, they still have some work left to prove themselves, similar to their counterparts at Karnavati.

This rounds up the Top 25! Controversial, sure. Fun, absolutely. They aren't the end-all-be-all of the NSCAA, but we hope they'll serve as a guide to the most powerful squads as time goes on this season.

BC Olympia Lerna will start construction of its arena in the south of Lerna. Gymnasium continues to be expanded, in partnership with the University.

Armando Castar, 85, owner of 47% of Olympia's SAD, never tires of putting money from his own pocket on the team. Of course, the team of Savin, Allion and newly hired Leontzio Aspe (who leaves the University of Nortmer, Aristian Republic, direct to Lerna after two good appearances in IBCs 25 and 26) gives a lot of money to its shareholders, but it is not enough to play the club's ambitious new project: The nation's largest basketball arena, presented at a meeting with the board of associated members (which owns 33% of the shares), to the Lerna Community Chamber (Owner of 10%) and to the University of Lerna (owner of the remaining 10%)

Today, the title of the biggest arena in the country goes to the Nordland Metropolitano, which has a maximum capacity of 15200 for the games of the orange ball, but is a multipurpose arena, and can still be used for Rugby, Football, Tennis, Music Shows or any other sport. Giannis Salmakis Pavillion is expected to receive approximately 20,000 people, and will be located in the south of Lerna, in a region that is currently occupied primarily by sheds belonging to Castar companies.

"Our goal is not just to build. We think that building there will improve that region, which is an area a little away from the town. We want to create conditions for people to live, work and transit there. We are the capital of basketball in this country, so we need to have a good place for our basketball."

Asked about the maintenance of the Gymnasium, which served the city since 1945, as one of the headquarters of the team, Castar was emphatic.

"It's not goodbye, and it will never be. It will always be our home, my home." I played in that gym Our story is all there ... And that's why we keep investing to expand it. We want to return the Gymnasium to the university with twice its capacity, and the expansion from 6000 to 8000 places with the completion of the top bleachers is on schedule. Repercussion in the university team

We've seen the way our Baker Park teams competing in the NSCAA have performed so far. Of course I argued that we should've sent our top four squads, rather than the mix and match assortment representing the UAC. They wanted a cross section of the country represented, different size schools and the spectrum of educational opportunities on full view.
I'm glad that I was wrong; none of the four have been over-matched terribly, except the odd result here and there.

We have been in a period of growth for the profile of our domestic sports to a wider audience, and over the course of that period, we have reaffirmed our own biases, for lack of a better term; we have the athletic prowess that other nations do, we have coaches and training methods that are excellent and we can compete with the very best without embarrassment or shame.

Basketball is an excellent example of how Baker Park took something and adapted it to suit our national ethos; the emphasis on passing rather than dribbling as the primary way of ball movement, and the use of systematic patterns rather than a free for all approach to player movement are the two major differences between our style and many other nations.

There is still quite a way to go, and fortunes can change quickly, but right now, we are hovering near the top of the four conferences that the teams are participating in. No matter who we support, we should all take a moment and smile.

One year later,

We’re back in the NSCAA Tournament, looking to defend our championship. It’s been a great year for our school, and that goes beyond simply winning this tournament. Just beating out the other Cassadagan schools in NSCAA 9, especially UCH (University of Concord Heights) was sweet. People asked me, “who was your biggest rival in the last NSCAA tournament?” and I tell them that really, that rival was our own schools. We were in different conferences, but these added games gave another opportunity for us to get bragging rights. We didn’t win our home championship, but we could call ourselves world champions, something that no one else could claim. This year, we didn’t win the title, either, losing to the Brat Tech in the semis.

After winning, there was not much time for celebration. Really, it was back to the books. Ouor professors were mostly willing to give us extensions on projects and the like, but once we were back in school, the lost time caught up to us. New Lakeland is a tough school, I imagine most of the schools that are in the NSCAA will be, but things are strict here. My grades were not as high as I would have liked to have them, and my GPA slipped to 3.0. I have been able to work that up to a 3.4 as of right now, so I am happy about that and feel that I have learned where I went wrong last year. Hopefully we have a long run again, as a senior, its nice to have these added games to your athletic career. I do expect to go professional, but you can’t fall back on that, and in the end, I will be just as happy to have a degree from NLU then to play professionally.
