World Cup 82

Sargossa - 'The Corsairs'

The Sargossan national side is experiencing something of a purple patch, following up a runner’s up spot at the Copa Rushmori with a run to the last sixteen of World Cup 81. A run which saw them send world number two Farfadillis home and then push eventual winners Vilita right to the brink, before losing out by the odd goal in seven. The recent Copa gave the coaching staff an opportunity to see fringe players in action as they look to revitalise an attack that has wondered on to the wrong side of thirty.

Head Coach

Rodrigo Defederico
Former international midfielder who starred in the SuperLiga, before plying his trade in Astograth. A former coach of the Olympic side who led hometown club Dunas Del Sol to the Copa Sargossa final in his first full season in charge. Has led the Corsairs to second and fourth place finishes in the Copa Rushmori and is looking for a third straight World Cup qualification.

Backroom Staff

Assistant Head Coach: Raúl Churín
Defensive Coach: Guillermo Lucena
Attacking Coach: Alejandro Tapia
Goalkeeping Coach: Armando Abad
Fitness Coach: Mario Sánchez
Team Doctor: Dr Carla Segura

Talent

GK: 1. Sergio Vega (30) – Dínamo Maturín
GK: 13. Carlos Ríos (29) – Sportivo Soluca
GK: 25. Roberto Penedo (23) – Dunas Del Sol

Vega and Ríos provide the international experience but it’s the youngster Penedo, given his league debut by Rodrigo Defederico when in charge of Dunas, who is set to be given the nod after an eventful Copa Rushmori and another solid league campaign.

DR: 2. Alonzo Zevallos (26) – Ciudad Soluca
DRC: 5. José Guerrero (29) – Ciudad Soluca
DC: 6. Alex González (28) – Oakstone (Eura)
DL: 3. Saúl Escribano (23) – Sportivo Soluca
DLC: 12. Fabián Parra (26) – Dínamo Maturín
DRC: 14. Enrique Muñoz (25) – Sporting San Marquez
DL: 19. Germán Montero (30) – Dínamo Maturín
DC: 21: Jesús Venegas (27) – Sportivo Soluca

Seemingly you don’t get a look in as a SuperLiga centreback unless you happen to clear six foot so expect an imposing wall of darker blue arrayed ahead of the keeper. Alex González is a classy ball playing central defender in the traditional Gozan mould and is will continue to sit at the centre of the back three. A move to Euran football can only benefit him and the defence as a whole. That’s certainly the hope, given the side’s recent propensity to leak goals. Muñoz has emerged as a defender par excellence domestically and is expected to edge out the long serving José Guerrero. Parra will likely occupy the third berth but he is being pushed hard by the reliable Jesús Venegas. Montero and Zevallos provide first choice options if wing backs are deployed or if the coach reverts to a back four. Although Zevallos attacking thrust has often seen him used on the right of midfield.

MC: 4. Sergio Espina (28) – Alianza Jucaro
AMR: 7. Diego Puebla (26) – El Nacional
MC: 8. Alejandro Vecino (35) – Dínamo Maturín
AML: 11. Carlos Álvarez (29) – Porto Alegro Azul
AMRC: 15. Mariano Carballar (26) – Sportivo Soluca
MC: 16. César Goyoso (23) – Sporting San Marquez
DMC: 18. Luís Vazquez (27) – Sportivo Cordova
DMC: 22. Ignacio Navarro (31) – Sporting San Marquez
AMLC: 24. Alfredo Valenzuela (27) – Dunas Del Sol

Alejandro Vecino hasn’t quite called it a day yet but he’s likely to be used sparingly and, as such, leaves a considerable hole in the heart of the side. Rafael Bustamanté’s failure to impress at the Copa in Mytanija sees the former heir apparent out of contention entirely. Instead it’s César Goyoso who will partner captain Sergio Espina in the centre of the park. Valenzuela provides nice balance on the left but faces competition from the pacy yet erratic Carlos Álvarez. Vazquez and Navarro, two midfield battlers in a traditional Sargossan mould, provide more defensive minded options and Carballar will challenge Alonzo Zevallos for a place on the right.

FLC: 9. Miguel Ángel Berganza (26) – El Nacional
FRLC: 10. Miguel Marí (32) – Dínamo Maturín
FC: 17. Fabián Guzmán (25) – Sporting San Marquez
FRC: 20. Matías Cáceres (28) – Ciudad Soluca
FL: 23. Andrés Saavedra (25) – Estrella Torreón
FC: 26. Tomas Murillo (24) – Alianza Jucaro

Much of The Corsairs’ recent success had stemmed from the fluid offensive play provided by the attacking trident of Iván Mayoral, Miguel Marí and Matías Cáceres. But with Mayoral’s international retirement and Marí no spring chicken either an injection of fresh blood was needed. Fabián Guzmán, a usual impact sub in the last campaign, will replace Mayoral as the centre ‘point’ and the domestic form of Miguel Ángel Berganza should see him start too. Saavedra provides a more conventional wide option on the left.

Style

Defederico credits former Sargossan great Ernesto Farias for his own tactical approach, a 3-4-3 system with a high defensive line and an emphasis on pressing and harrying the opposition into a mistake. He is also far more attack minded than his predecessor and his players are encouraged to get the ball from front to back at a rapid pace. Long balls are consider anathema, with even the goalkeeper encouraged to slide a pass to the defender rather than hoofing it up field. The system is relatively fluid, with 5-3-2, 3-4-1-2 and 5-4-1 all used to some degree, depending on the circumstances and opposition.

The SuperLiga is quite a physical league so challenges can often be described as 'uncompromising' and cards are pretty common. Gamesmanship, while never encouraged, is also not entirely uncommon. But diving is considered particularly stigmatic so Sargossan players are unlikely to be found doing it.

Venues

Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado
City: Soluca
Capacity: 108,879
Tenants: Ciudad Soluca, Sportivo Soluca
Opponent(s): Pasarga / Squornshelan Remnant States

The centrepiece of a major beautification development in the capital, the stadium sits within the Parque De Los Vencedores and alongside the Corazal River. Designed by Nethertopian architect Gert Naamloos and part financed by two SuperLiga clubs, the Sargossan government and Starblaydi sportswear giants ediraf it is a truly magnificent sporting arena. The Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado, as the ediraf Arena was rechristened when the naming rights deal expired, is the epitome of a modern football stadium. Consequently, it is the national side’s most commonly used venue. Unfortunately, the glamourous surroundings are marred somewhat by the Soluca crowds’ reputation for being both fickle and moody.

Image
Image

Independienté
City: Goza
Capacity: 119,354
Tenants: El Nacional
Opponent(s): United States of Devonta

The very antithesis to the modern Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado, and revelling in that fact. The internal facilities may have been kept relatively up to date at the Independienté but little has changed at the vast open bowl since its construction. The nation’s largest sporting venue and one that prides itself on the genuine carnival atmosphere produced on matchdays.

Ciudad Deportiva
City: Maturín
Capacity: 52,000
Tenants: Dínamo Maturín
Opponent(s): Crystalline Caverns

Although the name has come to refer to the stadium alone the Ciudad Deportiva is actually a whole site devoted to sporting excellence. Constructed as part of a government drive to boast sport, the site is also home to the national Track and Field Centre of Excellence, an aquatic centre, basketball and volleyball facilities and a state-of-the-art sport science clinic. The stadium itself is an impressive venue that is regularly voted as the top matchday experience by fans in the SuperLiga. The Sargossan record there too is very strong, having dropped points only twice in the seventeen matches played in Maturín over the years.

Estadio Silva
City: San Marquez
Capacity: 62,543
Tenants: Sporting San Marquez
Opponent(s): North Prarie

Like the Independienté the Estadio Silva is one of the older venues used by the national side. Set within one of the poorer districts of the eclectic southern city of San Marquez, in amongst the brightly coloured favelas and street vendors, a trip to the stadium is more a cultural experience than a sporting one for the foreign visitor. Some famous nations have taken to the Estadio Silva turf in the past, names such as Sorthern Northland, Candelaria And Marquez and Cassadaigua.

Bonilla Arena
City: Jucaro
Capacity: 74,475
Tenants: Alianza Jucaro
Opponent(s): Najaf

The quintessential rich man’s play thing, Alianza Jucaro are the nearly men of Sargossan domestic football. Bankrolled by the mega-wealthy Bonilla family the club have won three national cup competitions in recent years but have never claimed the league title they so crave. While the Bonillas have thrown money at the playing staff they’ve also invested heavily in infrastructure, including the stadium that bears their name. Set in the South Quays district of the port city, right on the waters of the Bay of Carrasco, it’s an imposing venue for visiting sides.

Estadio Del Sol
City: Dunas
Capacity: 31,359
Tenants: Dunas Del Sol
Opponent(s): Sorrentopia

The resort city of Dunas is a popular haunt for Sargossans and tourists alike, with its good weather, cheap booze and its waterfront of garish attractions. It’s an image the locals aren’t overly fond of which makes their local football team, the city’s other nationally recognised landmark, a source of much pride. One of the smaller venues used in this World Cup cycle, the Estadio Del Sol is located away from the neon glare of the strips nestled, as it is, in the quieter surrounds of the old town. Two of the previous five matches held in Dunas have seen Sargossa edge seven goal thrillers.

Petro Dome
City: Mercada
Capacity: 42,511
Tenants: Petro Mercada
Opponent(s): Gutulia

In a city so synonymous with Petro National, the Sargossan national oil and gas company, it’s no surprise to find both the local football team and the stadium in which they play blazoned with the Petro name. Oil wealth has yet to equal success on the pitch for the Incan side but that wealth may have played some part in the city replacing island rivals Torreón in the World Cup rotation two years ago.

El Torrigal
City: Torreón
Capacity: 30,000
Tenants: Estrella Torreón
Opponent(s): Fevhader

Controversially dropped from hosting duties during the last World Cup cycle, one of the nation's oldest and most picturesque venues returns this time around. Nestled in the mountain fastness of Torreón, high amongst the Chalaco Mountains, El Torrigal is the smallest of the venues but one in which Sargossa enjoys a formidable record. In the ten previous fixtures held in the University city the Corsairs have won eight and drawn two.

"Tenkyo National Stadium"
Capacity: 89,000

Originally designed as a multi-purpose Olympic stadium, it is now the home of the First Division football club FC Tenkyo. It is used as a main venue for all major Kandorese football events and sometimes used for other sporting events, concerts and even events such as markets and festivals. During natural disasters the stadium is often used as a shelter. Tenkyo National Stadium is one of the largest stadiums in Kandorith in both size and capacity. It is a national symbol of Kandorese engineering and is also featured on special issued coins.

Notes

After two years away from international soccer, Republican National Soccer Team, LLC reformed two years ago just as its owner and sole proprietor was awarded the title of Soccer General by Consul Kyle Bolton. Soccer General Rule Theriault held open tryouts throughout the FFR to find the best young soccer players and the hottest high school cheerleaders in the Federation and get them under contract to Republican National Soccer Team, LLC. After travelling across the Federation and holding 60 open tryouts, a total of 27 soccer players and 68 cheerleaders were selected for the team based on their performance, (in the case of the soccer players) game tape and discussions with their coaches. At this time, Theriault is unsure whether any of the players stand out above the rest but he is hopeful that they will be responsible to coaching from the first Soccer General in the history of the Free Republics and his legendary assistant manager Sir Koby Theodore, who shined so memorably in World Cups 68 and 71. While rumor has it that looks were a factor in selecting both the soccer team and the cheerleading squad, Soccer General Rule Theriault denies rumors that Nova Hellstrom-Hancock and Lucia Bolton had a role in selecting players for the soccer team, though he does admit that Sir Koby Theodore and Consul Kyle Bolton hand-picked the cheerleaders.

In the year since World Cup 78, the Free Republics fell into a civil war. Political tensions that had been brewing for a long time between the political mainstream and the progressive left finally boiled over at the Unite the Left rally in Goldberg, Nejax. The small college town, home to the University of Nejax, was the site of disturbing political violence as an extreme progressive ran over 5 people, including University of Nejax pitcher Jurgen Eberhardt, the ace of the school's baseball team. A wave of left-wing domestic terror followed, leading to the passage of the Stop Aggressive Violent Extremism (SAVE) Act which granted extraordinary powers to the Federation Investigation Bureau (FIB) to protect public safety. 32 Republics responded to this by seceding from the FFR to form the Confederacy of Leftist Republics, which quickly became a state sponsor of terror. In the months since, the Republican armed forces have lost battle after battle to the Confederates and the FFR has suffered from many acts of terror, some of which, such as the destruction of the entries into international tournaments of the National Baseball Team and the National Hockey Team have had serious repercussions for Republican international sports. Eventually, the Leftist Republics were defeated and their territory turned into extremist containment zones known as "Charter Societies" as part of an effort to end political extremism in the Free Republics.

As the civil war was going on within the Free Republics, the National Soccer Team somehow managed to qualify for the World Cup, shocking almost everybody throughout the multiverse. However, they did not lost all 3 of their group stage matches that year and very much looked like a fluke qualifier. Last year, the Republican National Team headed into the Independents Cup in Schottia last year, where they announced their return to respectability in international soccer by winning the tournament, albeit with a fairly controversial victory over Mercedini and a poor group stage performance along the way. Then, they managed to qualify for the World Cup again in rather ugly fashion, drawing their first 4 matches, going just 8-7-3 in qualifying and barely managing to finish 3rd in their group. After defeating Apox rather easily in a playoff, they proceeded to lose 2 more World Cup group stage matches before drawing Abanhfleft in a meaningless match on the final day. Last year saw the Republican National Team pick up 3rd place finishes at the Independents Cu, Cup of Champions and World Cup, all of which were held on home soil.

Turori: Citizen Squad

Head Coach: Klaillal Tuirma
Descendant of Season 4 Turorian Player of the Season and National team legend Cuolia Tuirma, Klaillal often partnered on the pitch with Restiia Mumamba as an "All-Around" player for the Turori National Team. After being brought up through the academy system at Kionao, Tuirma signed a professional contract with Colonial Sile in Vilita for Season 35, winning silverware in the first match, the Tropical Trophy triumph over Strike. Tuirma's stay in Sile didn't last long, however, coaxed back to the luxury of Arcticala Inlet to help in their Champions-Cup qualifying campaign of Season 38. Tuirma returned to Turori during Season 44 as a member of Mliona-Lpaka AFC. Tuirma retired from international competition after winning the 67th Cup of Harmony with Turori. Playing in a unique role throughout their career - being expected to be able to play every game, in every position - even Goalkeeper, if there were no subs left - resulted in a deep understanding of each position on the pitch and the nuances that made each position different setting Tuirma up to be a well respected coach, ultimately getting the nod as the head coach of Turori's National Citizen Squad.

The coaches will select the squad from the National Player pool. Players are listed below, grouped by position and sorted by projection 'Depth Chart' position where the top player listed is most likely to be named the first player selected for that position, and so on. Depth chart positions are determined by performance in pre-cup training sessions, as well as performance and average ratings in the Vilitan League competition and previous appearances for the National Team.

Note 'Caps" are shown are currently on record for Turorian Players on from the start of World Cup 80 due to federation budget re-allocations during this time period to the Cocoabo Enrichment & Enhancement Project (CEEP)

An'maude led Cedniavella to the 64th UICA Series 'B' Champions Cup title and then subsequently backstopped the 'Vellas to a runner-up finish in the Declasse during Season 54 and subsequent promotion to the Stellar Division. An'maude was also named Vilitan Declasse Division goalkeeper of the Season for the Season 54. While An'maude was impressive in the Stellar Division, leading Cedniavella to a top-10 finish ahead of rivals Cednia Beach AFC, the Turorian netminder was coerced out of Cedniavella to take over goalkeeper duties at Lonngeylin Coast as the heir-apparent to the aging Cilamara Issah. Was Vilita & Turori's #1 netminder on the championship winning AOCAF 56 squad.

Young prospect Disterfred pushed Inura Forests into the top half of the Season 38 Declasse, earning player of the season honors at the club and earning recognition as a serious propsect for the National Team. Disterfred was a member of the AOCAF 41 Championship Winning side, but did not start any of the 7 matches en-route to the title. When head coach Nycflala Kater took a back seat early in the competition during AOCAF 42, however, Disterfred had his chance to play as Vilita & Turori earned their second consecutive AOCAF title. However, Disterfred's domestic career took a negative turn when Inura Forests were relegated out of the Vilitan League, prompting a cross-country transfer to the Kionao Locals in the Declasse division. Despite the strong leadership of Lita Adjei and good performances in the UICA Competitions, Kionao was unable to get promoted and eventually Disterfred would move to Turoki Isle in order to get a chance to play in the Stellar Division. Having played his whole career in Vilita, Disterfred was eventually convinced to return home to Turori when the chance to play at Cednia Beach AFC was presented, Disterfred being named the replacement for retiring Vilitan netminder Jaqe Planst.

Cobrio National Football Team for World Cup 82

Image
CFF Logo designed by ediraf

((OOC: see this factbook for an explanation of terms used here))

ABOUT
The Cobrio national football team is operated under the auspices of the Cobre Football Federation (CFF), to represent the Independent State of Cobrio in international competition.

While the team has existed in some form for around eighty years -- it was formed during the 2220s while Cobrio sought to gain independence from Osarius, only participating in friendly tournaments and the Rabastor Unity Trophy -- it is only during the past two years that Cobrio's national team has been officially recognised by the World Cup Committee. The team's first game after official recognition was a 3-3 draw against Osarius at Tukari Kaita National Stadium -- a newly built stadium near Camaron, the official capital of Cobrio. This stadium also serves as the home venue for the national team.

Cobrio's debut appearance in WCC competition culminated in their victory at the 68th Baptism of Fire tournament, before a mediocre World Cup qualifying campaign. In the middle of that campaign, they also took part in the Cup of Champions (note: it did not go well for them). Lacking an invite to the Cup of Harmony, the team have been inactive since, only rocking up to compete at the rebooted Rabastor Unity Trophy this past summer.

((On an OOC note, it is perhaps of particular note that the nation of Cobrio has access to, and mastery of, some future tech. Not quite interstellar travel level of future tech, but concepts like full-brain emulation and near-universal healing methodology are very much real things in 24th-century Cobrio.))

KITS
The Cobrio kits are provided by ediraf and designed to represent the nation's deep cultural heritage. The home kits are primarily gold, but incorporate the adinkra -- traditional Cobre symbols said to confer various qualities upon the wearer -- and the other colours of the national flag (green and black).

The away kits are designed in a similar fashion to the traditional uniform of initiates to the zabamince wadanda, in recognition of the homour of being selected. They are almost all black, which is said to represent the void one must embrace when entering battle. The adinkra also feature along the hem, to confer their power upon the wearer.

The goalkeeper kits are primarily green, to represent the land from which the team hails. Cobre culture exalts the land, as it is from the land that all nourishment comes, in some form or another. Traditional beliefs also state that Olugun, the Father of the Irunashe, created man from plant material in the beginning. As with the other kits, the adinkra also feature here, on the sleeves, as a goalkeeper's arms and hands are considered most important.

Image Image Image

PLAYING STYLE
Cobrio generally play something akin to the classic "Osarian 4-3-3" but normally with a dedicated defensive midfielder (a "disruptor"; whose role is to break up the play primarily) and two fullbacks given license to push forward. Most Cobre players are fast, even the larger guys -- often deceptively so -- though this does not translate to "clumsy", be warned.

While some players are highly tactically astute, this is not the norm. The struggles in the area over the past couple of decades -- rebuilding the football scene after the lengthy war -- have led to a limited degree of football education for the majority of players. Particularly those who did not play for a big club (read: "who used to play in the Osarian Golden League"), and as a result, Cobre football tends to focus more on athleticism and instinct. Do not mistake this for a lack of tactical acumen, however. The team is exceptionally well-drilled -- having an ex-military man as your coach will do that -- and while not at the elite level (yet), it is important to note that these are still professional footballers of the highest level in their country.

PERSONNEL

Manager
Lt. Beresford Owusu
A former officer in the Cobre military, Lt. Owusu was hand-picked to oversee the training of the national team following his stellar work with Cobre Special Forces. It was believed that his skill at team-building and general command excellence would be the best foundation upon which to build the Cobrio team for their first foray into international football. Owusu is known for his tactical brilliance, though at times he might think of gambits a little too complex for some of his players to bear out as he had envisioned, meaning he often has to simplify things to the point they are not quite as effective. He demands that his players give everything they have, and then some more, but does not always recognise the need to rotate his squad. This can sometimes lead to the Cobre side looking tired after a number of games in quick succession, and playing well below expectation.

In the time since the last World Cup qualifying campaign, Owusu has taken the team on several excursions to drill them tactically and further deepen their bonds as a team. In addition, he has travelled overseas to study with foreign coaches, in an attempt to develop his own tactical understanding of the game. His preferred tactical approach has been said to be neither reactive, nor proactive. It simply is. Most notably, Lewis Armstrong has said that in Cobre football [under Owusu], when an opportunity presents itself, the team does not need to "take it", as things will happen naturally.

Squad

NOTE: Higher squad numbers denote lower chances of being selected for any given match.
In the event that Cobrio qualify for the World Cup finals, or Cup of Harmony, the squad will be trimmed to the standard twenty-three.

The Euran Football Association’s World Cup 82 Qualifying Squad

Manager: Daniel Belgrave (61, Eura)

Eura finished 3rd at the 80th World Cup, having been knocked out by Brenecia before beating Farfadillis for third spot. Shortly after Steve Thompson stepped down as Eura boss after a marathon reign, leaving Daniel Belgrave to take over at the age of 58. Belgrave has big shoes to fill and will be under a lot of pressure to prove that he is a worthy successor, and to challenge media arguments that his appointment represents Eura looking backwards to the past when it should be gazing upon the future. For his first tournament, the 30th Copa Rushmori, he picked a competitive but youthful squad to demonstrate his credentials as a developer of young players. His team was characterised by the kind of attractive football that the teams he played in lived by but with a more firm grip on the defensive organisation. After a promising start Eura stuttered and dropped out of that tournament.

In qualifiers for the 81st World Cup Eura came roaring back to form and avenged their recent defeat to Brenecia in the knockouts, but suffered a disappointing defeat to the Free Republics despite being a favourite for the tournament, and exited the 82nd World Cup and 31st Copa Rushmori in a similar fashion. Belgrave has done well to bring in new talent to the squad but there is a growing feeling that his style of management has not yet dealt with some of the underlying mental and attitude issues that have prevented Eura from winning their third World Cup title. Its no surprise then that he has taken the unprecedented step of naming a formal "pool list" alongside the main qualifying squad, applying pressure to established squad members to perform when it matters.

Assistant Manager: Mike Humphrey (64, Eura)

Matt Boyce retired alongside his friend and colleague Steve Thompson. As a replacement new manager Daniel Belgrave chose former Euran national team captain and vice captain Mike Humphrey, from the same generation of players as Thompson and Belgrave, taking him away from his current job as Euran Under 21's manager.

Eura's goalkeeping lineup has remained the same with Griffin, Belgrave and Bull being comfortably ahead of any competition. Griffin has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the multiverse for several seasons and recently enjoyed UICA success with the Moths. Belgrave has been living in his shadow to some degree but has got regular appearances. Ryan Bull has played more of a cameo role despite being the leading man at wealthy Brinemouth, but he cannot be too disappointed having only relatively recently come onto the international scene.

Defenders

2 – Scott Coles - RB - 30 - Ulsa
3 – Ben Hall - LB - 27 - Oakstone
4 – John Leach – CB – 31 – Ulsa
5 – Harvey Blake - CB - 27 - Spartangrad
15 – Charles Roberts - CB - 25 - Bastion
19 – Oliver Murray - CB - 31 - Holdenberg
21 – Jon Haines - RB - 27 - Sabrefell Moths (Nephara)
23 – Stanley Burns – LB – 21 – Holdenberg
25 – Samuel Hopkins - CB - 26 - Eastweald (Cosumar)
27 – Steve Fox - RB - 24 - Sabrefell Athletic (Nephara)

Defence has been the most improved aspect of Eura's play since Daniel Belgrave made it the focus of his efforts on appointment. Naturally this change in focus has come at the expense of other areas and not yet borne full fruit, but its a start. This is also the least changed part of the squad this time round, with the only player dropped from the last Copa Rushmori being James Lord. Replacing him in the squad is young Stanley Burns who played a key part in the shock title winning defence of Holdenberg during Season 38. His club captain Oliver Murray is promoted up the ranks but remains behind John Leach, Harvey Blake and Charles Roberts. Scott Coles remains international captain and rock of the backline.

Midfielders

6 – John Talbot - CDM - 30 - Spartangrad
7 – Oscar Coltrane - AM - 31 - Sabrefell Athletic (Nephara)
8 – Liam Armstrong - CM - 28 - Starling (Nephara)
11 - Anthony Townsend - RM - 27 - Ma Alameome (Farfadillis)
12 - Rhys Griffiths - AM - 25 - Revolutionaries
16 – Alex Wyatt - CM - 31 - Revolutionaries
18 – Harry Gravesen - CM - 28 - Spartangrad
20 – Moira Woakes (F) – AM – 22 – Crisisbless (Nephara)
22 – Dominic Miller - LW - 30 - Bastion
24 – Frank Bevan - CM - 25 - Holdenberg
28 – Harry Humphreys – CM – 25 – Raynor City United (Valanora)
29 – Freddie Wright – RW – 24 – Brigham

Traditionally the strongest part of Eura's team in the last decade, the midfield selection is conservative as usual - with one exception that is understandably hogging the media limelight. Moira Woakes is the first female player to be called up to what was effectively the Euran men's team until now, coming in for the retiring Tom Robson. Woakes, a 22 year old who played for the Euran Women's U18 side and then the "Men's" U21 team at the last Di Bradini Cup, has been a rising star in Euraleague for Carsby and recently secured a big money move to Crisisbless in Nephara. Her debut will no doubt be one of the most hotly anticipated moments in the recent history of Euran football. Just as significant is the fate of the current four established starters - Armstrong, Talbot, Townsend and of course Oscar Coltrane - who have come to dominate these positions but are now reaching the peak of their powers without having won major international silverware for a while. Many are beginning to suspect that this could be the cycle where Rhys Griffiths usurps Coltrane at least partially in the "heir to Sinclair" role. Meanwhile the uncapped Harry Humphreys and Freddie Wright have been called up as replacements for the dropped duo Harrison Burns and Sebastian Field.

Forwards

9 – Josh Holmes – AM/CF – 31 – Revolutionaries
10 – Dion Underwood - ST - 31 - Bastion
14 – Lofty Jones - CF - 33 - Bastion
17 – Brian Bond - LW/ST - 25 – Eastweald (Cosumar)
26 – Dean Sharp – ST – 30 – 1830 Cathair (Audioslavia)

If the starting midfielders are under considerable pressure to deliver at a major tournament then the strikers are in an even more precarious situation. Dion Underwood has thrived under Belgrave's counter attacking tactics despite his encroaching age. Josh Holmes on the other hand has looked less comfortable in the system and is also 31, while Lofty Jones is treated as a periphery player at times and is now 33. Therefore the expectation is that Brian Bond and Dean Sharp will play a major part in this campaign with both Holmes and Jones potentially being phased out after years of helping lead the line. Waiting in the wings are a number of capable reserves including the dropped Morgan Fox and the highly rated likes of John Fletcher and Tom Whittaker.

Reserves/Pool

Jeffrey Douglas – GK – 35 – Bastion
James Clements – GK – 29 – Oakstone
Ethan Cook – RB – 31 – Directus
Dean Steele – CB – 22 – FC Endeavour (Apox)
Jarrod Jenkins – CB – 21 – Falourr
Jake Newton – CB – 23 – Baskita FC (Pasarga)
Reece Lucas – LB – 23 – Ulsa
James Lord - LB - 25 - Holdenberg City
Harrison Burns - RM - 28 – Bastion
Oliver Naismith – RM – 28 – Lajuno
Sebastian Field - CM – 28 – Farrenton Athletic
Vincent Robshaw – CM – 22 – Unioneers
Nicky Keane – CM – 32 – Directus
Chris Ashton – CM – 25 – Lajuno
Clint Rogers – CAM – 21 – Spartangrad
Henry Patterson – CAM – 23 – Directus
Kasey Fuller – LW – 20 – Bastion
Damion Bowman – LW – 21 – Hornchurch
Morgan Fox - CF - 27 – Falourr
John Fletcher – CF – 26 – AFC Treason (Nephara)
Lewis Phoenix – ST – 23 – FC Endeavour (Apox)
Tom Whittaker – ST – 25 – Chenoworth Harriers (Nephara)

Preferred starting lineup

Note; does not take into account suspensions, injuries or any other change. At the end of each RP I post, I will try to give a team for the next match and formation type. If no such lineup is posted, assume that there have been no changes and use the lineup below.

GK - 1. R Griffin
RWB - 2. S Coles
RCB - 4. J Leach
LCB - 5. H Blake
LWB - 3. B Hall
CDM - 6. J Talbot
RCM - 8. L Armstrong
LCM - 16. A Wyatt
RAM - 11. A Townsend
LAM - 7. O Coltrane
ST - 10. D Underwood

Eura may sometimes play 4-2-2-2 with Coltrane shifted to the left and Wyatt benched for another striker, usually Holmes, or a 4-3-3 with a middle of Armstrong/Coltrane/Talbot and a front three of Underwood/Bond/Holmes.

Subs

13. D Belgrave
21. J Haines
15. C Roberts
23. S Burns
24. F Bevan
12. R Griffiths
18. H Gravesen
9. J Holmes
17. B Bond

Player Roles

Squad Captain: Scott Coles
Vice Captain: Robert Griffin
Direct free kicks: Oscar Coltrane (Right footed)
Indirect free kicks: Liam Armstrong (Right footed)
Right corner: Oscar Coltrane (Right footed)
Left corner: Oscar Coltrane (Right footed)
Penalties: 1. Liam Armstrong 2. Oscar Coltrane 3. Dion Underwood 4. Anthony Townsend 5. Scott Coles

Stadium

Eura play their international home games at the Bastion Arena, the 110,000 capacity all-seater stadium at the heart of Eura's capital.

Osarius Squad for World Cup 82

Team: Osarius National Football Team (aka "The Firebirds")
Style modifier: +1.5 (counter-pressing defence; possession-based attack)

Manager: Francesca Panico

Captain: Marios Mundi
Vice-captain: Belshazzar Qanbari
3rd captain: Storm Galdeira

Home stadium: Mount Crown Stadium, Burningham (cap. 98,000 all seated)
The Firebirds' home stadium is built at the foot of the imposing Mount Crown, on the outskirts of the capital city, Burningham. Fans are known for their extremely vocal support, and the Osarian national stadium has been described as a difficult place to play. The stats support this notion, as Osarius boast a superb record there over the past two decades. The most vociferous home fans are seated in a kop-esque stand built into the mountainside, with the huge, rocky face behind them adding to the intimidation. The pitch itself is usually made shorter, but wider than most, which is likely highly unfamiliar to most visiting teams. This is deliberate, as these odd dimensions cater to the short midfield passing and counter pressing style the Firebirds employ, as well as their frequent use of width. As a result, long-ball teams will likely find it difficult to find space behind the defence, but teams making liberal use of wingers will likely flourish. In a similar vein, a high offside trap (near the half way line, for example) will likely be more difficult to pull off, due to the speed at which a transition can occur -- with forwards still onside in their own half -- and limited space between defence and midfield.

My RP Permissions are pretty chill to be honest.
Pretty much anything goes, I only ask that you let me decide the severity of any injuries you decide to RP for me, please.
Send my players off if you must -- if its a player I really didn't wanna lose for the next game, I'll RP an appeal or something.
Oh and at the risk of sounding a bit "RAWR" ... do not kill any of my players or coaching staff (unless I say go ahead via TG).
Killing fans is okay though. Go nuts with that if you like.

I have a pretty clear tactical philosophy in mind for my team so I recommend at least skim-reading the next section, or the wiki page on the "Osarian 4-3-3" (Suzakudo: The Way of the Firebird), if you intend to RP the match in detail. Long story short, Osarius play in a style that is something like Arsenal's invincibles -- in that it's both possession based AND counter attacking -- while lining up in a Xavi/Messi-era Barcelona type 4-3-3 formation. It is unlikely a nation ranked outside the top 15-20 in the world could outplay them in midfield or win the possession game, but they are far from invulnerable, and have been overcome by teams playing even the simplest of tactical systems at times.

The team will generally attempt to control possession rather than engage in consciously defensive play; and "parking the bus" is a cardinal sin. When out of possession, the team will generally press high up the pitch to compress the available space -- because they are largely comfortable playing the ball under pressure -- and try to win the ball back as quickly as possible, sometimes over-committing, and leaving themselves vulnerable to a swift counterattack. Generally pacy defenders help to alleviate this problem somewhat.

Against stronger opponents, expect to see a more defensive positioning manifest itself, though. Fullbacks will be less likely to bomb forward, and the team tends to be more conservative in possession, often playing backward to draw the opposition in, before launching a devastating counter attack with pace. They will also slow down when ahead later in the game, but only so they don't unnecessarily provide opportunities to lose possession and/or concede. This doesn't mean they wont take the opportunity to score if it presents itself, though...

The front line of three is often very flexible, with all three (usually) capable of playing in any of the front three roles at any given time. Most of the time, the centre forward/striker will remain the focal point of the team's central attacking, though, whether they are receiving passes or moving to make space for the wingers.

The midfield will almost always be lined up in way that the three players form a sideways arrow (minus the shaft). By this, I mean that one will sit deep, one will push forward, and one will be a box-to-box type shuttling between the two. On the occasions no specifically named attacking midfielder ("AM" in the squad list) is used, typically it is an indicator that the manager expects a tighter battle for possession in the midfield zone, and it's likely two midfielders will be box-to-box, while the third midfielder is a more defensively-inclined (possibly even a "DM") option.

If there IS an attacking midfielder on the pitch, they will operate either as a playmaker, and most passages of play will go through them... or they will push forward from midfield a lot, getting onto the end of passes in the final third, and thus scoring a fair few goals. I'll try to highlight which of the two if I feel like it really matters. Typically speaking, if none of the other two midfielders is mentioned as being outright defensive, the attacking midfielder is a "playmaker" type.

Defensively, Osarian centre-backs are typically pacy and expected to have strong aerial ability and good positional awareness. The latter part is less important if a player is particularly quick, though. Almost certainly, one of the centre backs or the goalkeeper will be good at organising the defence. In cases where there is a notable lack of organisational skill -- typically in situations lacking experience -- there is a clear knock-on effect on the rest of the team. With that in mind, don't expect starting centre backs to be among the younger or less experienced members of the team.

The fullbacks typically overlap a lot -- considering how often the wingers change sides and become "inverted" (i.e. cutting inside the defender on their stronger foot, rather than pulling wide) -- and seem to operate almost as advanced as wingbacks (or even midfielders against considerably weaker teams) a lot of the time, making the system a sort of like a 3-4-3 when Osarius attack, due to the deepest central midfielder dropping back to a position right in front of the defence, to counter against a potential playmaker "in the hole" for the opposition. This can be a potential weak point if this player is small in stature, as they will often get drawn into the backline and thus, potentially mismatched against forwards.

If you did read the spoiler above, thank you! You don't have to stick to all of that, it just fits in better with the way I intend to RP my team (when I can).

Manager: Francesca Panico
A disciple of a coaching line that stretches back to Hugh Collingwood, and a Suzakudo devotee, Panico is the obvious candidate to manage an Osarius side returning to the international stage for the first time in generations. Her attention to detail will be crucial in returning the former World Champions to their previous status as a respected, if not feared, force in world football.

A preference for younger talent is evident in her selections, as she tends toward trusting the inexperienced players at her disposal to carry out her gameplan. A marked contrast to most Osarian coaches these days, and a clear influence of her one-time mentor, Ryan Watson (grandson of Benni Watson).

Mrii National Team
Image

For competition in the 82nd World Cup
Right: An artist's rendition of Solara Vol, star Mrii striker (in her Sabrefell Moths duds).
Style: 4-3-3, +1.5
Home Field: Haven, Maal (65 000). Located in the scenic old city overlooking the warm Atlantian ocean.
Nickname: the Reavers

Note that most players (and the majority of Mrii) are satyrs, as pictured, though with a variety of skins tones--mostly in various shades of blue, purple, and red. They're on average very tall, along the lines of human professional basketball players, and specialize in aerial play thanks to the elevated header control courtesy of their horns. Their stature also lends itself to a fast and aggressive attacking game, leveraging long strides, high stamina, and imposing presence to pressure and wear down the opposition. While there are certain Mrii who show a phenomenal amount of dexterity on the ball, they're generally the strikers; small, quick humans that can "get under" Mrii backs have been a problem spot for the team, as well as a generally weaker grasp of the defensive game.

The Reavers have made a name for themselves as a perennial presence in the World Cup Finals, but have yet to make much of an impact beyond that. With another long qualifying road ahead, there are questions if the current core has enough gas in the tank to keep that level of performance up--nevermind accelerating. On the other hand, the raw talent in the team is still astounding if they can find a way to tap it even further. This cycle is likely to be a turning point for the squad, no matter the direction.

Positional Breakdown
Keepers
It’s fair to say Mara’s got a firm hold on the starting gig. Despite Zilia’s utter domination of the MNL, one has to think being named to the A-League Team of the Year is a stronger look. The NT momentum also feels like it’s in Mara’s favor, but we all know how fickle that can be. In the third slot Kostin Bermat decided to hang up his international boots, to borrow a human phrase, and make way for the unheralded Kaara, who’s been making a better name of herself in Brenecia than she ever did in Bruul. Even if her club is a bit naff.

Backs
The back situation for the Reavers is always sticky and this cycle is no different. Finding the correct balance between threatening ball-handlers like Reina and hatcheteers like Maas to stitch together what can plausible be called “a defense.” Geraard is still calling the shots from the center and is very much transitioning into the trickster archetype that outwits rather than outbrawns; even as he slows he still has the strongest generalissimo's acumen to keep the caps rolling. Karii is still a promising talent but had a rough go of things starting in the AOCAF, for the time losing the spot to Westhold’s rookie surprise Wehi’katal. The dryad is a deft tracker and nearly impossible to shake, which helps make up for the much less imposing figure he cuts compared to his satyr teammates.

Midfielders
A surprising youth option has cropped up as Veryn split time winning the United League, but on short notice he’ll mostly be along for the ride to see if he can acclimate to the squad. Malia Polandre keeps plugging along as the workhorse she is, providing what creativity to a fast a direct formation. Malia Yonen is quickly settling into her role as the new midfield bruiser, but she manages to bring some silk along with the steel and provide another solid front-to-back link. Tia is the classic link-up with Pia and a constant thorn in the side of whoever she sets her sights on. Hilda manages to hang on in the reverses for the situations where someone absolutely, positively needs to get merced while Revan Mor finally gets a call-up after years of solid but unspectacular play on an excellent Angels squad. A minute-eater that specializes in stifling the game with a lead.

Strikers
The Mrii bread and butter, and by far the most competitive position. Solara’s a lock, no questions. Her ability to flip seamlessly between straining any defense to holding up play for ages to making opportunities appear at random is the hallmark of the Reavers. Aldo has made a very strong case as an autolock as well, through his years of consistent contribution and continual ripping up of the ANL. A solid poacher with a great sense of “right place right time” can get a lot done. Tali’raia’s spot is a bit more tenuous as the talent levels even out--though her unique brand subtle technical play is often a refreshing change of pace to the other two running defenders over. Jorm is still in good standing with Don despite being rather quiet the last few cycles--he’s best described as the backup Solara, with a chunk less magic but a bit better ability to get stuck in (without drawing ref ire, at least). Lasser and Mako both fill the sort of quick, hard-hitting supersub role and are probably the most direct competition to see who gets booted out of the final squad. Finally, but certainly not least, is Portia. The former Alchemist who walked over the MNL and still didn’t get a call-up has finally forced the issue by taking the Nepharim First Division Iron Fist; with the juicy prospect of linking up to recent teammate Yonen in the cards, it’s possible that she’ll crack the first eleven in the near future.

EURAN OCEANIA TERRITORIES
"The Expats"

World Cup 82 Qualifying Squad

National Introduction

Kit: Blue with combination livery of Euran gold and Syndicatian white. Alternative kit is the same colours are Syndicatian or "Revolutionaries" green.
Stadium: Flynn Arena, 96,500
Style Mod: +4

The Incorporated States of Euran Oceania Territories is a parliamentary federal dominion of Eura, formed of the Euran zone of the former Inevitable Syndicate and the Whittorian Islands. It has a population of just under ten million people which is quickly rising, making it a beacon of diversity home to Syndicatians, Whittorian refugees, Euran migrants and others. It has possibly the world's largest artificial crater, which dominates the landscape west of what is now New Fligsive, the capital of this new entity. Its home stadium is the The Flynn Arena, where Eura beat Polar Islandstates 4-2 in the famous 66th World Cup final. Few would have predicted that the colours of red, blue and gold would become permanent there but its happened, and the stadium is now back in good condition after an expensive refit to return it to the 96,500 capacity it held previously. Previously a wooden stadium, the current iteration of the Flynn Arena was rebuilt after a great fire destroyed the stadium during a game between Fligsive FC and Magnaeus City. Nowadays, it's a little more robust, having been the subject of many refurbishment projects over the years. The stadium was easily reachable on the Fligsive Metro before the violent overthrow of the Corvidae regime and the associated disaster in Fligsive. It now sports a combination of the old paint job as well as Euran blue and gold while the local club Fligsive FC are still in existence despite drawing lower crowds after the Mertagne exodus, though they do not play in the hastily cobbled together amateur EOTLeague.

Euran Oceania Territories formed a national football team not long after the founding of the political entity, a project conjured up by the Euran government Ministry of Sport to imbue a sense of cohesion among the diverse population of EOT. They played a series of friendlies against other "Eurasphere" sides from Endemia and Rushmore in a lengthy state subsidised tour. Their first games were defeats against Daera, Itor and the Ferguson Islands, before an unexpected 4-3 victory against Helving, despite their Euraleague star Scott Barnes scoring a hattrick. They then entered the 50th AOCAF full of excitement despite having a mostly amateur team, including serving military personnel, but were promptly demolished in the group stages by several teams. Now, with the citizenship laws relaxed to allow the growth of the Territories, the "Underdogs" as they have come to call themselves are suddenly confident that they might be able to pull off a shock or two. Their first manager was of top class pedigree - Tolgus Tregajorran, a footballing hero in Apox who is also well known on the international scene.

Tregajorran managed to persuade some former Apoxian internationals, playing in Eura and with no international allegiance following the temporary dismemberment of Apoxian professional football, to sign the relevant papers and make the surprise switch to EOT, as well as Euran's and other international exiles. After several years of bit part competition EOT competed in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time and in turn the Baptism of Fire, after the Sameban national team withdrew from the Endemian International Sporting Agreement and international football. They performed poorly at the Baptism of Fire, going out at the group stage, but put on a respectable showing in their qualifying group for the 80th World Cup. Tregajorran's unexpected departure and a chaotic period followed, ending with the controversial appointment of Euran footballing legend and cult icon Skorji Oslograd halfway through World Cup 81 qualifying. Immediately applying his "Skorjiball" approach - best summarised as an extremely aggressive and fluid attacking game interrupted sporadically by the manager doing something inappropriate - the team secured some noteworthy results but remains very much an underdog competitor. Oslograd's dream is to turn them into the living embodiment of "the way of the warrior" and to qualify for the World Cup. The recent AOCAF was the first tournament where Olsograd was able to demonstrate his own approach to the game in full but the results were mixed. This will be Oslograd's first full World Cup qualifying campaign in charge, and with Champions Cup winners in the ranks and an icon in charge, expectations will be that the Expats should be challenging for the top half of the group.

The Squad
Shirt number. Name - Age - Position - Caps - Goals - Club (Nation)

Goalkeepers

1. Bart Jones - 34 - GK - Burdoc Ridge (Audioslavia)
13. Tammy Barton - 27 - GK - Fligsive FC

The same keepers as usual, because this is all the Expats have right now. Jones is decent enough, but Barton is not good enough at international level.

Defenders

2. Timwise Gerduns - 27 - RB - Revolutionaries (Eura)
5. Kurt Strong - 28 - CB - Revolutionaries (Eura)
6. Alex Charlton - 33 - CB - Brigham (Eura)
3. Jesus Moreno - 27 - LB - Dangerford (Eura)
15. Marvin Walsh - 20 - RB - Holdenberg City (Eura)
19. Freddie Law - 25 - CB - Foxhampton (Eura)
21. Jason Potts - 20 - CB - Ulsa (Eura)
23. Danny Lawrence - 29 - CB - Ulsa Rovers (Eura)
25. Jack Ream - 26 - RB - Fligsive FC
26 - Ewan May - 33 - LB - Lemmitania State FC (Audioslavia)

Oslograd continues to insist on a back three of Gerduns (playing as a centreback), Strong and Charlton. They lack pace but are strong and experienced. Jeusus Moreno’s career is undergoing a recovery that sees him back in the side when Oslograd opts to switch to a back four, while Freddie Law, Jason Potts and Marvin Walsh are knocking on the door of the first team.

Midfielders

4. Samuel Freeman - 31 - CM - Farrenton Athletic (Eura)
7. Peter Chadwick - 30 - CAM - Holdenberg City (Eura)
8. Willem Ajax - 32 - CM - Bastion (Eura)
11. Kasey Fuller - 20 - LW - Bastion (Eura)
16. Louie McKenzie - 29 - AM - Callodown (Eura)
17. Edward Pollard - 31 - LM - Lajuno (Eura)
20. Joel Conway - 23 - RW - Creed United (Nephara)
22. Peter Brooks - 27 - CM - AFC Whittorians
24. George Richards - 22 - CDM - Pascal Mashu (Hinode)
26. Mark Little - 24 - RW - Fligsive FC

As was the case at the most recent AOCAF the midfield is EOT’s strongest area despite a relative lack of depth (they are so short on squad players that the roster is unchanged in midfield from the AOCAF). Samuel Freeman, Peter Chadwick and Willem Ajax are all in their early thirties but trusted immensely by Oslograd (for now at least) and are the backbone of the squad. Kasey Fuller and Joel Conway are the exciting pacey youngsters. Louie McKenzie, Edward Pollard and George Richards may all get game time. Mark Little and Peter Brooks are unlikely to feature against anyone other than the weakest sides.

Forwards

9. Pierre-Louis Le Tonnelier - 25 - ST - Farrenton Athletic (Eura)
10. Tom Duffy - 27 - CF – Ulsa (Eura)
14. Garret Ramsey - 24 - ST - Harkdown (Eura)
12. Paul Hooper - 24 - ST – Dartmoor (Eura)
18. Ulysses Zimmer - 28 - ST - Hornchurch (Eura)

Inexplicably EOT have a Champions Cup winning starting striker among their ranks. Tom Duffy's unanticipated glory with RGS Athletic has made him an undroppable centreforward despite his arguably modest talents. He’s even earned himself a move to Ulsa to play second fiddle to the far superior Romikk Valgard. But Zimmer and Hooper are unquestionably down the pecking order in the new front two which features Le Tonnelier, a fan favourite with a rebellious personality and noticeable beer gut but the ball control and flair of Craig Sinclair, and Oslograd's pet - sorry, we mean prodigy - Garret Ramsey as the first choice substitute. This is Ramsey's third national team. Yes, you read that correctly.

Preferred starting lineup
Formation is...good lord, who knows. Really depends what side of bed Oslograd wakes up on. But the absolute madman will likely play a 3-4-3 of sorts, but really it’s more like a 3-2-5. If they are losing and need to score, they tend to stick with that. If they need to defend a lead Oslograd tends to be rather all or nothing, and will throw on the most defensive formation possible at short notice.

GK - 1. B Jones
RCB - 2. T Gerduns
CB - 5. K Strong
LCB - 6. A Charlton
RCM - 4. S Freeman
LCM - 8. W Ajax
RW - 20. J Conway
CAM - 7. P Chadwick
LW - 11. K Fuller
RS - 10. T Duffy
LS - 9. P-L Le Tonnelier

Manager: Edward Rose

Edward Rose was a former defender of the Grodian team. He was appointed as the manager of the team just before the ILFA Premiership replacing Ian Wissa. He successfully lead the team to the third position in the ILFA league and also got the team till the Round of 16. We have many expectations from him.

Assistant Manager: Leman Dres

Leman Dres is also a former Grodian player. He won 56 caps for the team. He is currently the manager of Communist FC in the Grodian Premiership and has led the team to two back to back league wins.

Team

Formation: 4-3-1-2

Basic Info

Nation: Ethane
Team Nickname: Red Kites
Style Mod: +1
Trigramme: ETN
Formation: 4-1-2-1-2 (narrow), 4-2-2-2 (Wide CAMs), 3-3-1-3 (1 CM, 2 wingers).

Staffing

Manager: Gavin Comi; 60
Comi swept in after Curtis Steeling departed the managerial role, making drastic changes to the team structure including the transformation of the team from an extremely defensive side to an extremely offensive side, to the annoyance of many Ethani fans. However, it turns out to have worked for him quite well as he's stuck to his brand of football - a style he uses the term 'Explosive football' to describe. He has led Ethane to a number of world cup qualifications, including their best result yet - the quarter-finals - in the last world cup. Comi intends to do just that again and try to beat the achievements of the last world cup. However, with the Ethanese regulations around the number of players in a world cup qualification squad relaxed, he has the freedom to choose a larger squad and play around a little. Somewhat inspired by the new assistant manager under him, expect to see Comi's side offering up a much more moderated - and more defensive - style than previous world cups; out with the gung-ho and in with the pragmatic approaches.

Assistant Manager: Daniel Beller; 38
A younger addition to the managerial department, Beller brings a much more pragmatic and reasoned approach to the team. Unlike Comi, Beller places a lot more focus on the defensive side of the game, while still appreciating the offensive side of the game; Beller's sides generally are much more neutral in their philosophy, especially when compared to Comi. Bailey's departure was viewed as inevitable by many pundits, with Comi and him not really clicking together, Bailey being sidelined in most decisions. Beller's appointment, however, was hand-picked by Comi and was met with widespread approval. Hopefully, Beller will be able to make up for Comi's more bullish nature and keep the team in check.

Offensive Coach: Edward Jules; 44
Edward is a new appointment, replacing Carlsting who had been a part of the management team since the start of Curtis Steeling's tenure. Carlsting decided it was time to try something new, and Jules brings expertise from the league system in Ethane to the role, which will help him succeed.

Defensive Coach: Adam Hurnley; 53
Hurnley has been around since the start of Steeling's tenure, and doesn't appear ready to leave yet. Despite some slightly lacklustre defensive performances recently, Hurnley hopes to bolster the defensive capabilities of the Ethanese squad alongside the new appointment of Beller.

Goalkeeper Coach: Jacob Reeses; 43
Reeses joined alongside Comi and has committed himself to at least this World Cup and the next Campionato Esportiva.

Physio: Keith Lambeth
Medic: Kerry Hanners

The Players

There have been some changes in personnel but also in the lineup and squad depth. An agreement with The Flame League has allowed for a relaxation of the regulations surrounding the number of players that can be in the international side, so the player depth for the qualification campaign is much greater than previous campaigns; the new cap is 50 players. Furthermore, with Beller's appointment, there is a renewed focus on defence. This has seen Comi experiment with some new formations, which we will probably get to see through the qualifiers. This may make some players in the squad redundant, but Comi is unafraid to play some players he is comfortable in the ability of out of position and to revert back to the old formation if some of the new formations don't work out well for the team.

Some of the new formations Comi has been trying out and will likely implement during the qualification period include the 4-1-2-1-2 (narrow) and the 4-2-2-2 (2 CM, 2 wide CAM).

Defence

GoalKeeper: Bruce Paul | 35 | Bourne River
Bruce Paul's meteoric rise, despite heading towards the end of his career, is undoubtedly deserved. While he has never been in a World Cup squad for Ethane before, he has been promoted to the first choice keeper by Comi for his abilities as well as his performance in The Flame League for Bourne River. Paul is an athletic goalkeeper who has great awareness. He is losing some of his athleticness and speed in decision making as he gets older - this will be his only World Cup - he still has amazing positional awareness and the ability to make a save you just thought wouldn't be possible to make. He's also a great collector of the ball, both collecting shots and collecting corners and free kicks, eliminating some of the threat from set pieces. Bruce Paul has had a remarkable few seasons in The Flame League, keeping 18 clean sheets this season and 20 clean sheets last season. These performances deservedly place him at the top of the pile when it comes to Ethani goalkeepers.

GoalKeeper: Israel Reinhardt | 34 | Old Sarum
Israel Reinhardt is a crowd favourite at Old Sarum, and you can see why. As well as interacting well with the fans and celebrating with them whenever they win, Israel is also a marvel to watch. He is a great aerial shot-stopper, and with his height can reach further than a fair number of top goalkeepers. Reinhardt is a great option for penalties and keeps his composure well, reading other players well too. Not great at distribution or collecting, and not exactly a good passer if tactics require passbacks in the team, but he is there when you need him.

GoalKeeper: Jeremiah Shepard | 29 | Blashpool City
Shepard, once at the pinaccle of the Ethanese team in this position, has let his performances slip recently. Poor performances in the past few seasons have seen Letson Town reject his services, opting to gamble on signing another top quality keeper than stick with Shepard. While Shepard was a great keeper with strong leadership qualities and a strong all-round ability in goal, including distribution and passing, he has hit a massive stumbling block recently and is suffering a massive crisis in confidence. The fact he can still make the team while performing badly just goes to show how good he is when he is at his best, but only 6 clean sheets in each of the past 2 seasons of The Flame League is just not good enough to get the top spot on the national side.

GoalKeeper: Isaac Chabalala | 31 | Rhayader
On the face of it, calling up Chabalala seems like an odd decision. He isn't exactly in a strong team, and doesn't offer much in the way of distribution qualities, or penalties. However, the talent of Chabalala is often overlooked because his team is so lowly in The Flame League. Isaac is actually probably one of the best keepers in The Flame League but struggles because he is part of Rhayader. Across the past season he has managed to make a number of astounding saves, saving Rhayader from losses throughout the campaign. He has been battered and bruised this season yet still managed to keep 11 clean sheets. Chabalala is a solid shot stopper, with a fast reaction speed and a long reach. His positional awareness is average, as is his collection. But he is good enough to make this team, and can offer much during the qualifiers to the team.

Left-Back: Cai Woods | 25 | AS Bezieres (VLD)[/color]
Woods is a young but skilled Ethanian football player. What he lacks for in strength, he makes up for this by his dedication to his training, and his speed with which he can control and run with the ball. His pace is what makes him ideal for his position in the national team. He can make a real immediate impact in teams, changing the defensive dynamic but also providing help down the flanks in attack. Woods had a remarkable season for Birdingstone United, scoring 3 and assisting 6 goals, as well as keeping 18 clean sheets. It's this solid defensive and offensive performance that has seen him lead the line at LB for Ethane in the World Cup qualifiers and his transfer to AS Bezieres (VLD) for 6.5 million.

Left-Back: Theresa Desantis | 33 | Sabrefell Moths (NPH)
A disciplined, defensive-minded veteran who will get her hands as dirty as the occasion calls for. Classy, if not dynamic, going forward. She has been playing for Sabrefell Moths in Nephara, though rumours of a transfer away are waiting to be substantiated on. She's one of the most iconic female footballers in Ethanese history, inspiring younger girls to follow in her footsteps. She is somewhat of a leading figure in the national team, although her role is beginning to fall by the wayside with her age.

Left-Back: Eric Morris | 27 | Bourne River
Eric Morris has been hovering in and around the edge of the national team for the past 2 World Cups. He had been hoping for his opportunity to step up and take the lead this World Cup in the lineup, but the stellar form of Cai Woods can't be ignored by Comi. Morris is quite a creative left-back in his style of play. He likes to play fast-paced football, with a general impetus to get the ball upfield rather than keep hold of the ball in possession. That certainly makes him more of a fit for the previous iteration of the national team's tactics, but he still has a place. Because he is quite a creative but malleable player, he can on occasion be caught on the break because of his general desire to bomb forward with pace. He is a good tackler though. Morris is a player that could probably play just as well in an LM position as well, although his finishing and shot power don't quite have the oomph that is needed to break through some of the top sides in the World Cup without a bit of luck. He had a good season for Bourne River, scoring 2 and assisting 3 goals, as well as keeping 17 clean sheets. Comi is hoping that when he plays, his performances for Bourne River can translate to performances for Ethane on the national stage.

Left-Back: Antonio Atanga | 23 | Rhayader
A surprise selection for inclusion in the national side alongside Isaac Chabalala. Atanga is used to playing in a back five formation as LWB, but is adaptable in his role to a back-four line. With Rhayader's narrow diamond formation in midfield, Atanga is often used as a pacey wingback, marauding down the flanks acting as a winger as well as a defender, providing an extra dimension on attack depending on the formation of play. With some of the formations Comi has been trying out he could end up playing a similar role but in a back four, which depending on the formation of play could end up leaving the rearguard defensively vulnerable. However, he is quite skilled at dribbling at pace and has a few skill moves up his sleeves, as well as an accurate cross and finesse shot. He is slightly unstable on his feet though and a little too keen to go to ground, both when being tackled but also in his overuse of slide tackles which makes cards a slightly greater consideration for him. When on the pitch, could potentially take free kicks. He had a reasonably solid season for Rhayader when considering their general standard within the context of the league. He scored 2 and assisted 1 goal, as well as keeping 10 clean sheets. This might seem low but because Rhayader is a very defensive, and lesser quality team, they often struggle to move out of defence for long periods of games, which explains his lower goal and assist count than expected.

Centre-Back: Ty Waldron | 29 | Old Sarum
Not the first name that came to the mind of most people when it came to selections at CB, but one that has been met with approval by most to replace some of the players who have reached the age where it's been decided they no longer have a place in the national team. Waldron is your typical bullish and strong centre-back. He isn't the paciest of players but does have a strong positional awareness to his game, and times tackles well. He also has good passing and distribution, rarely caught out. He also never really tracks forward so provides a good buffer even on the counter. Waldron is not afraid to get himself dirty and hurt to keep that ball out of the net, nor is he afraid to get sent off, if that is what it comes to. However, he is a rather composed figure so most of the cards he gets (only a few) come from tactical fouls. Waldron had a good season for Old Sarum, assisting 2 goals and keeping 17 clean sheets.

Centre-Back: Justin Crawford | 23 | Farrenton Athletic (EUR)
Crawford is a pacey player, as Comi likes, and is adept with the ball. He also loves to get involved on the counter and in set pieces. This can leave the defensive line at risk, as he does often stray from his position. However, he always has an idea up his sleeve and is very creative in his approach to the game. Crawford is hoping to truly prove himself in the World Cup and show that he does have what it takes to be amongst the very best.

Centre-Back: Nelson Romero | 29 | Loconstead United
Loconstead United had a rather disappointing season, finishing 8th after never finishing outside the top 4 previously since the creation of The Flame League 9 seasons ago. Despite this, Romero somehow managed to prove himself as good enough to make the national side for the 82nd World Cup Qualifiers. An experienced hand in defence, Romero is a relatively good all-around player in his position. He isn't remarkable in any aspect of his game really but has workmanship that sees him stick in, go for it, and really put everything he can into defending that goal, putting his body on the line. He is of a quick pace though, his passing is just about average, his tackling and positioning are just above average, yet because of the effort, he gives that averageness is better than the showy nature of some defenders who put in less effort. He is a brutish figure and is very strong, providing him with the ability to muscle people off the ball. He is willing to aid in attacks, although struggles in slower play with slower buildups and possession. He wanted to be transferred out but no buyers came forward so he is sticking around at Loconstead United for now, after finishing the season with 1 goal, 2 assists, and 13 clean sheets.

Centre-Back: Kyle Cooper | 35 | Bourne River
Despite reaching towards the end of his career, Comi still seems Cooper as an integral figure to the Ethanian national team, even in just a leadership role within the cloakroom. However, do expect to see Cooper play some matches in what will be his last World Cup. Cooper is good with the head and often referred to as an all-rounder, although elements of his game have deteriorated with age. Under Comi's previous system he would often get involved in the attacks a lot more, but now tends to be used only for corners and free kicks in the attacking department because his height makes him a prime target to get ahead in on goal. He is an average tackler, although dislikes going to ground in a tackle so only rarely slides. He is a very cool-headed player and likes to work with the team in unity, generally getting on well with other teammates. He can sometimes try to dominate in decisions though and can occasionally be seen as quite arrogant, especially by the opposition. He had a good season for Bourne River, scoring 1 goal and keeping 18 clean sheets.

Centre-Back: Joseph Fenley | 30 | South Saints
Fenley's inclusion in this side is very much not a surprise, considering Darien Fear's retirement from international football. South Saints consistently have the best defence in the league, and so you'd expect to see this represented in the international team. Fenley is a smaller player than Fear so doesn't provide the aerial protection that Fear used to provide. However, in other ways, Fenley is a very similar player to Fear; He is a consistent player but with an ability to pull a surprise out of the bag; he's not afraid to put his body on the line in games; he is a role model to younger players; and he is very raw emotionally, brittle yet manages to keep his cool in most scenarios while playing football because he is so incredibly focused on the task at hand. Fenley had a fairly decent season for South Saints, managing 12 clean sheets, although with no attacking returns. Expect to see similar performances from him in terms of little to no attacking returns.

Right-Back: Frances Towns | 30 | Old Sarum
Frances Towns, defensively, is one of the best players in The Flame League. However, she is often inconsistent and isn't quick. This creates many problems, especially as a defensive winger in the modern age of football where pace often holds much more importance. Towns is smart so her positioning makes up for most of her other flaws, and she just so happens to be in the right place at the right time most of the time. She's strong mentally and physically though so is hard to break through. Despite this, she also still tries to assist in attacks and does that quite successfully as well because of her great passing distribution and crosses. Across the past season, she managed to score 2 and assist 5 goals, as well as keeping 11 clean sheets.

Right-Back: Daniel Baker | 28 | Olask Islanders (COS)
Baker is a very defensive player and prefers a team which plays defensively overall. This is because while he is a strong player in terms of his tackling ability, vision, and has average pace, he can be overwhelmed if he doesn't have the same level of support in defence. He prefers playing a 5 man defence but can go with a 4-man defensive line. He is relatively chilled in his attitude, but if the manager is pushing a tactic he disagrees with, he will sometimes very vocally oppose it, and sometimes refuse to play that tactic if he doesn't like the manager (aggressive, pushy managers are the type he dislikes). However, once he gets to know a manager well, and he gets on the manager's good side, then he is one of the best allies a manager can have.

Right-Back: Zakariya McArthur | 25 | StoneHedge Rovers
Zakariya McArthur will fit well into Comi's visions for the RB role. He's pacey so can bomb forward and provide an extra dimension on the wing in the attack, but also puts in a lot of effort so quickly tracks back to prevent counters. He commits, but not too much to leave him way out of position. He has accurate crosses, powerful shots. He reads the game well and knows when to cross when to go in for a shot, and when to stay back for the counter. He knows when to go in for a tackle and when to just block. He just isn't very good in pressurised situations, so he will need to step up to perform well in this national side.

Right-Back: Joshua Cook | 32 | South Saints
He is a solid, consistent defender, and having made a mistake, tends, for the most part, to not repeat that mistake again. However, he can sometimes be duped in some tricks. Not so good on the attacking front, he does tend to be used more when the team is on full defensive mode, but he has started to help out in the attack on occasion when the manager demands it. Not so good on the headers, he tends to press up against the corner kick taker, or not take a place in front of goal for them. He has got a good sized kick to him, and can sometimes be seen switching the sides of the pitch that the ball is on, to confuse the opposition, and open up gaps in the opposition defence, also helping on clearing the ball, and distributing. He had a reasonably good season for South Saints, with 2 assists and 2 goals, and 10 clean sheets.

Central Defensive Midfielder: Devon West | 31 | Blashpool City
Devon West is a reliable and well-mannered player, who holds great respect for all players, team and opponents. This is reflected in the way he plays: he quite often won't be fully abrasive in his style nor will he take a brutish approach. Instead, he acts as a conduit for the ball, but also as a presence in midfield. He is good at reading the ball, especially passes, making him good at interceptions, and he can make good tackles here and there; although he isn't the strongest player so won't really be forcing people off balls. He in nature would not work dropping back into a CB role if the team were to go more defensive because his skill set involves manoeuvring which he is quite good at, positioning, and good distribution. He sometimes goes forward on the offensive as well. He is of average pace and height.

Central Defensive Midfielder: Max Lowe | 30 | South Saints
Max Lowe is integral to the defensivity of South Saints. He is almost a complete contrast to Devon West, offering up a much more brutish and strong presence in midfield to support the defensive line. He is not the most adept at passing but does have some smart passes up his sleeves, however he often likes to play it safe. He is also of average pace but is much more defensively minded than West, staying back on attacks and reading the game for interceptions and strong tackles. He would also suit being dropped back into a CB role if required to.

Centre Midfielder: Leyton Underwood | 29 | Letson Town
One of Ethane's best midfield assets, he is a powerful force in the domestic league, scoring 7 goals and assisting 29 last season on the back of 10 goals and 36 assists the season before, winning him the highest assist tally for 2 seasons straight. Leyton has a remarkable mind focused on attack, getting the ball forward and making advances towards the goal. He has pace, as well as the set of skills required to do well in the centre of midfield - passing, dribbling, the authority to dictate the game plan and the pace of play. He is a strong leadership figure within this squad and well respected, both in the team and abroad.

Centre Midfielder: Alexander Dyer | 26 | Northampton (AVN)
Dyer is a tactical genius in midfield, using his tactical knowledge to beat the opponents. His wit and concentration make up for his lack of pace, where he ends up taking a more distributory role in midfield, acting more as a playmaker than an attacker himself; Underwood often plays a more free-roaming role while Dyer holds the fort down in midfield. He is slightly more formulaic in his style of football, which can be a detriment when an opponent does the unexpected, and that does mean he is slightly more readable than other players, but he does have enough variety to offer up significant plays. He also has an eye for goal when the chance is open and there isn't a better option (he is an unselfish player). He generally advances on set pieces.

Centre Midfielder: Lewis Mickey | 26 | Johnho United (DAR)
Good awareness, positioning, passing, dribbling. Poor in the air. One of the only Llandudno Players who don't deserve to be relegated. 4 goals and 11 assists across the season. Can't tackle well, and his timing is bad, so prone to picking up a yellow card here and there. However, he knows when to play safer so generally doesn't get many red cards.

Centre Midfielder: Jaheim Zavala | 21 | Carredington
Had a good season with StoneHedge Rovers, scoring 4 and assisting 11 goals. Zavala has a really attacking impetus to his game, dribbling and moving forward and always trying to force the pass on. He has good linkup play between the defence and offence, and is not afraid to try out new things. Occasionally drifts too wide leaving the middle open, but also covers for wingers well. Pacey. Doesn't offer up too much in defence, but working on his defensive game. A very youthful player with a very bright future.

Centre Midfielder: Edward Hunter | 31 | Bourne River
Hunter's playstyle is less focused on attack. He is more used to a distributive role, often directing the game and managing it from midfield. He is tall, but surprisingly notably hard to get around, providing good effort on the defensive. He is smart positionally and is not afraid to go in for the tackle, which is generally well-timed.

Centre Midfielder: Milo Anthony | 28 | Newton Castle FC
Anthony is a very agile player, quick in his movements and passes. He can often catch a defensive player napping with a pinpoint accurate through ball. He is quick to the ball as well, providing a presence in midfield. He isn't exactly the player you'd call on for defensive responsibilities though, despite him mucking in on occasion.

Centre Midfielder: Alexander Kjaer | 22 | Loconstead United
A youthful player who has a lot to offer to the national team now and in the future. His attacking returns have been just above average - 5 goals and 4 assists across the season - but his play provides lots of promise which will hopefully now be unleashed following his recent transfer to Loconstead United from Rhayader. Kjaer is a calm and collected player but has lots to learn still. He puts the effort in, but he often doesn't know how best to approach a situation, making him prone to the mistake here and there. However, he is very much zippy and agile in midfield, especially when turning and shooting, providing a link-up threat or even an attacking threat himself when on the attack, especially effective on the counter.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Josh Montoya | 25 | Oakstone (EUR)
Montoya has a real ability to play and carry a team if needed. He's one of those players you can rely on to deliver when everyone else is having a bad game. Even if he's having a bad game he has that moment of genius that can make all the difference. Montoya is a mature footballer, showing wisdom and intelligence in his style of play and technique. He also has a deadly pace which allows him to rocket past defenders and tear opposition teams open. However, his main skills lie in his passing ability. His awareness allows for deadly through-balls and crucial passes, although when things aren't working out he can get a little frustrated and his performances drop a little. He can struggle under intense pressure, and is more injury prone than other players following a severe injury near the start of his career. He is also fairly reluctant to tackle because of this and doesn't offer much defensively.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Andy Obrien | 21 | Letson Town
Obrien made a significant impact in Letson Town's season, helping his team to their second consecutive league title, scoring 13 and assisting with 15 goals. Obrien is an immature player who hasn't fully developed the skill set and smartness around their play which older football players generally have. However, he is dedicated and much more willing to put energy and time into training and into the game, making him an important player to have on the field because of how willing he is to get involved. He isn't necessarily fast either, but he is a great playmaker, and completely unselfish. He is solid at positioning, passing, and dribbling, which allows him to work and coordinate an attack from the front effectively.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Seth Vaughan | 27 | Birdingstone United
His 10 goals and 13 assists were significant in Birdingstone United's season, propelling them to one of their best finishes in The Flame League. Vaughan is a bad-tempered but genius player who can often provide that crucial pass into the box. He often drifts wide for crosses and drops deep to collect the ball again and move it upfield due to his quality ball-at-feet skills, be it through skill moves or just generic dribbling and passing. He can be quite selfish, but is not stupid to squander a game because he wouldn't pass to someone else. Quite an independent player so doesn't generally integrate in the team community, although he does have a lot to say in the dressing room.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Ed Morin | 29 | New Sarum
A strong natural leader. Strong and ambitious. Always looking for that pass through the defence. Good at long-balls. Can occasionally be caught in possession. Strong work ethic, but often doesn't track back fast to help defend.

Left Midfielder: Iwan Roberts | 25 | Makosile United (VIL)
He may not have the strength of some wingers, nor quite the same crossing abilities as some of the better wingers (although he can still whip some decent crosses in), but what he does have is pace. He is one of Ethane's quickest runners, and he has a decent dribbling ability, making him ideal for a team focused on attack - either counter or just full-out - with the core idea to rip apart and stretch the opponent's defence. He has this ability to draw the defence out to him by coaxing them before charging round them - one of his trademark moves.

Left Midfielder: Christian Ali | 33 | Wofford Town (APX)
He isn't slow, but he isn't as fast as he once was. However, his great placement enables him to play an important role in the team, as does his crossing and shooting ability from distance.

Right Midfielder: Kyle Ford | 21 | Oakstone (EUR)
With 11 goals and 20 assists across the season for Bourne River, Ford offers a lot for the national team and is one of Ethane's most notable players. His style isn't founded on pace like some of the other players on the international team, although he is relatively fast and is working on improving his pace. Instead, he prefers to build up and keep possession. He is a strong dribbler, and has great awareness, especially in regards to crosses and through balls, the like which can tear open defences. He is also not averse to switching play a little and coming into the centre from the wing in an attack on the defence, letting the odd shot off here and there.

Right Midfielder (RW): Rigby Headley | 30 | Spartangrad

Offence

Striker: Mohammed Hope | 28 | South Saints
Hope is a very useful player to have on your team, specialising in long shots with his accuracy and vision proving integral to his striker talents. He is an impactful player. He is also good at headers - perfect for corners and free kicks. 22 goals and 5 assists across the season has put him right up the top of the pecking order when it comes to Ethani strikers, and he will want to cement his position as Ethane's best striker. He has a powerful and accurate shot, which can often catch keepers off guard.

Striker: Scott Burgess | 21 | Loconstead United
Burgess is a very fast striker, allowing him to breakway and rip apart defences with his speed and surpise. He is especially effective on the counter attack, but is also very useful as a point striker, because of his vision and his short-range shooting abilities. He is weaker at long-range shooting, and is not the greatest at headers. However, he is a strong team-player, and fully dedicated to his team.

Striker: Declan Smith | 22 | IFK Aldenskoett (COS)
Smith has a real eye for goal and always seems to know how to turn every play into an opportunity on goal, even when it seems there is no chance on goal. He can score goals from anywhere and any moment, it's almost magical. His assist number is a lot lower because he is always looking for goals, sometimes meaning he ignores an obvious opportunity that a teammate has to score, making him seem a little selfish. However, he is always trying to do what is best for the team in his own eyes. He can dribble and move well with the ball, although he isn't the fastest striker in the world. However, he does have good vision and knows where to move to shoot and to receive a pass. This makes him a dangerous player to be facing.

Striker: Samuel Mitchell | 29 | South Saints
Mitchell is a natural star and is great with the press. He has decent pace, which brings him the ability to zip round opposition players, to get the best shot on goal. While his finesse and technical ability when with and without the ball is certainly not fully developed yet, he has the passion, determination and ability to get the job done, which speaks testaments to the great player that Mitchell is. Mitchell is at the height of his career performance-wise and will be for the next few years.

Striker: Lukas Cole | 23 | Falourr (EUR)
He is more of a team player and passes the ball a lot more than other strikers such as Smith. Sometimes, he can be too unselfish, harming his own goal tally, as he misses what could have been an easy goal for himself to pass the ball to someone else. This can also lead to mistakes in passing the ball, resulting in his team missing out on a goal completely because of a mistake. He is a relatively fast striker. However, he is weak on the ball and can easily be pushed off, so needs a little more space to shoot than other strikers. Doesn't like being under pressure too much.

Striker: James Rodriguez | 28 | Vegai F.C. (VLZ)
He is generally good in 3 aspects of play: heading and playing off crosses, shooting from range, and dribbling.

Striker: Denis Classie | 22 | Old Sarum
Classie is a smart, but back-to-basics, young striker. Acting as a target man, he can take it anywhere and make any turn needed. He's good with the head, both feet, or any part of the body needed, and is good running on to the ball with through balls, especially in one-on-ones but also good at longer shots. Basically, he doesn't do much else.

Tactics

4-1-2-1-2
While employing this formation, the team will be more focused on defensive responsibilities, but also on keeping the ball. Attack build ups will be more gradual, with an emphasis on keeping the ball rather than shooting no matter what. The aim will be to dominate the midfield and force the opposition out wide, where the wingbacks can deal with them. When on the attack, the defensive wingbacks will swarm up the flanks to provide a wider dimension to the attack, while the CDM will hang back to provide an extra man in defence, dropping back to a CB role in extremely defensive situations.

4-2-2-2
This formation will feature a much more heavy emphasis on getting the ball into the box to the two main strikers rather than keeping possession of the ball. The wingbacks will largely stay back, although will drift up a little. The centre-mids will provide an avenue through the centre, while the 2 wide CAMs will be used both as CAMs but also as wingers to put in crosses and provide cover on the flank, providing an extra dimension to the attack. In situations where the focus is much more on defence, one of the CMs can move back into a CDM role, or the formation can revert back to the 4-1-2-1-2 with a more defensive focus.

3-3-1-3
The 3-at-the-back formation will be used during times where there is a particular focus on attacking - either when chasing a game or against a team struggling to score.

If swapping from the 4-1-2-1-2, the wingbacks will switch to wingers in midfield (LB->LM; RB->RM). The CAM will push forward to become a third central striker while the two strikers will move wider. The CAM may be used either as a False 9 or an ordinary CF. The more attacking inclined CM will move into the CAM position.

If swapping from the 4-2-2-2, the LB will become the LM, the RB will join the defence. One of the CMs will drop out to the RM. One of the CAMs will join the strikers either as a False 9 or an ordinary striker, while the other CAM will move central and remain CAM.

The playstyle in this formation will be the trademark Explosive Football, although the idea is that Comi is trying to transition away from this and take a more pragmatic approach so this won't be used that often.

Eastfield Lodge Roster for World Cup 82

Image

Demonym: Eastfielder

Eastfield Lodge is a pretty glorious nation, somewhat situated in Northern Rushmore - in reality, there's a very small island (acting as a transport hub) which hosts a portal linking the NSverse to a small bubble universe, wherein the rest of the Imperial Commonwealth is located (barring a couple of nations, but they’re linked up in other ways). The IC part describes the fact that there are several empires contained within one superstructure – divisions which are somewhat reflected in the convoluted league structure.

Those of you who know this nation well however will wonder what has happened to the Whoniverse (the universe of Doctor Who, the TV programme). Don’t worry, I will (hopefully) RP what went on. To those who don’t know, this nation used be in the NSverse, but due to the acts of a lone madman from The Holy Empire (mad, or pitiful, the legends are a bit shaky), Eastfield Lodge almost vanished from existence, leaving behind a small island (now in Rushmore), attached to a portal connecting here to the Whoniverse. Things happened, the portal became unstable, and we had to form a bubble universe, and as a result, the resulting temporal shockwave both wiped out all electronic records, and did some weird stuff to people’s ages (hence why some names in the team may seem recognisable).

Anyways, because of the initial portal, whilst humans are the overwhelming majority of the populace here, don't be surprised to find several other races and much advanced technology here. Some more historical information can be found here, in lieu of a factbook (NB: a lot of the information there is inaccurate though, TG me for clarification).

Back to the nation itself, Eastfield Lodge is probably the best place to live in the entirety of Rushmore, according to the WA at any rate. Amongst the accolades heaped upon are: Most Compassionate Citizens, Most Beautiful Environments, Happiest Citizens, Most Dedicated Public Healthcare, Healthiest Citizens, Least Corrupt Government, Longest Average Lifespan, Lowest Crime Rates, Nicest Citizens, Largest Public Transportation Department, Safest, Smartest Citizens, Most Popular Tourist Destinations, Best Weather and Largest Welfare Programs. Also of note is the fact that, in a region containing Saintland, Eastfield Lodge is the Most Devout nation, with Islam being the national religion, and that we have the Highest Police Ratios, so do not be alarmed by the sheer number of police officers.

Lodger City Memorial Stadium
Location: New Lodger City
Capacity: 150,000
Description: The home of Eastfielder football, the stadium was built on the ruins of the old capital of Eastfield Lodge, Lodger City, which was flattened in a double disaster (severe floods from dams bursting and an explosion from an unknown source, killing much of the population of the city and rendering the city useless. Administrative functions were transferred over to Lodgertia, the city began to be rebuilt, and it was decided that this stadium would be one of the monuments erected in place. The inside walls contains inscriptions of the names of all the dead – just under 9 million. The stadium used to play host to the two classic giants of EL football – RGS Athletic and VLC FC - until both had their new stadiums finished; it is now only used for internationals and cup matches.

Parliament Stadium
Location: Lodgertia
Capacity: 80,000
Description: Formerly the second largest stadium in Eastfield Lodge (until King Iqbal II and Vorgan Park were completed), behind the Memorial Stadium in New Lodger City, it was built in the centre of Lodgertia, the capital of Eastfield Lodge, and the Imperial Commonwealth. It was named due to the fact that the Parliament is based just a few hundred metres down the road; in fact, the original stadium was actually joined to the Parliament building, as an area where MPs could watch or even engage in sport with the public, as well as being a designated protest site. However, with Lodgertia becoming more built up, it was decided that the stadium needed to be built up as well. It is home to Lodgertia United and Lodgertia City alongside being temporary hosts of RGS Athletic and VLC FC (when Lodger City was being rebuilt), and in the past has hosted several international matches, including the final of SBCC 27 and a group in both stages of Market Cup 4.

Manager: Jane Williamson
Age: 49. The first female player to play for the Eastfielder national team back in the day, the former RGS full back became the first big Eastfielder coach in another country, as she went and became the assistant manager for the Chromatika national team, and quite successfully, up until that nation's disappearance from the world. And quite fortunately, she landed in this rle after the retirement of her predecessor, although things haven't started auspiciously for her so far, opting not to ring any big changes to the team's system for her first cycle. Very much a man manager as opposed to an astute tactician.

Assistant Manager: Robert Andrews
Age: 49. The former national team striker, who had over a century of international appearances to his name during his career, was specifically recruited by the previous manager, his old friend and ex-teammate Shabeen Ahmad III. This is his first major job in football since his playing retirement, but his ability to calmly analyse situations even under immense pressure has earned him some plaudits from those in the know, and as such could prove to be a vital asset to the national team going forward.

Formation: 4-1-2-3
Image

The formation is a weird variant on the classic basic 4-3-3. Here, there is the one holding midfielder, and the other two are pushed up to play just off the ST as attacking midfielders, whilst the WFs are also slightly tucked in from a usual position. This allows them more of an equal choice of either cutting in or going out wide for the cross, which may be met by the other winger or one of the midfielders. The front five can drift to other positions at any time, just to keep defences on their toes. Defensively, the AMs will drop back and slightly out wide or into the middle as required, and are decently proficient at dispossessing the ball and using it well. The DM is mainly there to guard the defence, and is adept at picking out a pass (short or long), and helping to dictate plays. The CBs are as standard, but the FBs are given the freedom to roam forwards as far as they can get away with, and more often than will get involved in attacking plays, with some crosses from both deep and closer in.
In terms of goal scoring, the ST will get the bulk of the goals, with good contributions from both the AMs and the WFs as well. The WFs will get most of the assists, followed closely by the AMs, then the ST and DM.

If I do RP, I will include the line-up for the next match in my RP post, along with any suspensions/injuries. If there is no line-up, look through my posts and check for current suspensions/injuries, but otherwise it’s fine. Also, if you're RP'ing any part of my match, please use the full name Eastfield Lodge at least once, it helps me find the RP.

NB: As the people of EL are extremely compassionate, and very civilised (despite what you may say about the religion), it would be uncharacteristic for the coaches/players to lose their temper, dive deliberately (jumping out of the way of bad tackles and falling awkwardly doesn't count), to be sent to the stands (if the ref is clearly very biased however...), spit, argue with the ref or fight. Players will also tend to inform the referee about mistakes/clarifications in judgement regarding throw-ins, fouls given but with no contact and goal kicks/corner kicks (plus other bouts of honesty - up to you).

Saint Émelie Roster For World Cup 82

Following respectable showings at AOCAFs LVI and LVII as well as World Cup 81, Saint Émelie are back to try and improve on their first cycle in international football.
Les Insulaires narrowly missed out on making the knockout stages of their first AOCAF. Despite a win against South Toronto and a heroic 4-3 win against Vilita & Turori in their first ever international, a 2-0 loss to this year's hosts Mriin condemned them to third in the group on head to head record. They fared much better in the most recent one however, making the quarter finals and beating Farfadillis 4-1 in the process.
Amélie Martín returns to manage the team whilst Florian Bastereud, the match winner in that epic first international, regains his captaincy.

Team Information:

Style Mod: +2
Nickname: Les Insulaires
Team Colours: Blue and white
Captain: Florian Bastereud
Formation: 4-4-2 (diamond)

The Team:

Head Coach: Amélie Martín

46 year old Amélie Martín was the lady tasked with managing the team for their world cup debut and still has a tough job on her hands. She now has the experience of an AOCAF, Baptism of Fire and World Cup qualifying cycle to call upon, but the squad is still lacking in game time compared to most of the region and the Ligue D'Ile is no suitable preparation for a tournament alongside some of the world's best.
Martín played for around 15 years in that league before making the switch to management. The Saint Émelie FA believes that she is therefore the person with the most thorough understanding of football on the island and is as good a person as any to continue the island's progression.

Assistant Coach: Jacques Barre

Alongside Martín will be the experienced head of Jacques Barre. The 58 year old also once played in the Ligue d'Ile, but finished early due to injury and 'not being able to run like he used to.' Since then, he has managed 3 of the island's teams, getting to know many of Saint Émelie's best players in the process.
Despite his increased experience relative to Martín, Barre lacks the dynamic approach to management preferred by the island's footballing authorities. His tactical mind will however provide a calm word in Martín's ear when needed.

Team Doctor and Physio: Antonin Gardinier

Gardinier has little to no experience with sports injuries or fitness management, but as the island's best general doctor, was picked to make the trip to the Equestrian States as he would 'have to do.' He has a fairly hands on approach to medicine and players will probably be hoping they remain injury-free throughout the tournament due to fear of a good prodding and Gardinier's tendency to opt for surgery when possible rather than when necessary.

Goalkeepers:

#1-Hubért Joubert-age 32-Stade Barbotteau
#12-Caroline Chapelle-age 24-CA Le Goutiér
#23-Robin Patenaude-age 27-Racing Montmirail

The experienced Joubert will be Saint Émelie's number one throughout the cycle. The 32 year old has established a reputation as the best all-round goalkeeper on the island and has particularly impressive distribution with his range of kicks and throws. He is also solid with crosses, but his shot-stopping skills will recieve more of an examination against international opposition compared to at home.
Caroline Chapelle is very much the understudy in the team. The 24 year old is an excellent shot stopper, but is less experieced and ultimately deficient in the areas where Joubert is strong. This may keep her out of the starting lineup for now, but she is here to learn and will almost certainly take over the starting role one day.
Robin Patenaude is decent by island standards, but is really only in the squad as injury cover and to have a nice time. If Saint Émelie actually end up playing him, they will be desparate and will probably lose.

Wide Defenders:

#2-RB-Charléne Forestier-age 23-CA Le Goutier
#5-LB-Max Lestiénne-age 28-CF Savenay
#13-RB-Paul Gasquet-age 25-Stade Barbotteau
#16-LB-Chloé Travert-age 21-Stade de Saint Marie

Saint Émelie's selection of full-backs is also a mixed bag. Max Lestiénne is the only player over 25 of the four players chosen, but the additional domestic experience will probably count for nothing in the international arena.
Saint Émelie's teams generally try to play with quick full-backs, using them to push up the pitch and provide an additional option for attacking players. This usually requires high fitness levels and will be even more testing for the players against better-quality opposition.
This is provided by a youthful lineup that includes up-and-coming Le Goutier player Charléne Forestier as well as 21 year old Chloé Travert, who despite her young age has already become one of the talents in the Saint Émelie league to watch in the coming months and years.
Rather like Robin Patenaude, Paul Gasquet is very much just along for the ride, but will provide reasonably coherent cover if needed.

Central Defenders:

#3-Daniel Bouchard-age 32-CF Duport
#4-Mignon Laureille-age 29-Stade Barbotteau
#14-Emeli Pied-age 27-CF Soufriére
#15-Claude Leclerc-age 24-CA Le Goutier

Saint Émeli's central defenders are the polar opposites to their wide counterparts. Big, powerful and not afraid to put in a strong tackle, they are certainly up to the physical challenge posed by any opposition, even internationally.
Daniel Bouchard and Mignon Laureille, who is anything but sweet, are the epitomy of this and despite their lack of pace, sitting deep and heading stuff out of the danger zone has become a common practice.
Their slowness will almost certainly be exposed by stronger opposition, but their prescence may frustrate, for a little while at least.

Midfielders:

CDM-#6-Florian Bastereud-age 32-CF Dupont
RM-#7-Florence Caseille-age 24-CF Savenay
CAM-#8-Simon Pelletier-age 30-CF Soufriére
LM-#9-Mathilde Laurent-age 26-CF Riviera
CM-#17-Laurent Michaud-age 25-Stade de Saint Marie
RW-#18-Emeli Fontaine-age 28-Stade Barbotteau
LW-#19-Tomas Cousineau-age 20-Racing Montmirail
CAM-#20-Jadine Dupont-age 26-CF Le Goutier

The midfield diamond is probably the most experienced of the Saint Émelie setup, although everything is of course relative. Florian Bastereud is the key component, with the 32 year old both the team's captain and midfield enforcer. The wings are also important however. Play in Saint Émelie requires fast movement of the ball to negate some fairly rustic pitches and will often be fed out to the wide players. Florence Caseille is a massive talent on the right whilst Mathilde Laurent is now an established name on the island and can deliver a fantastic set piece.

Simon Pelletier is often the intermediate between defense and attack, but has a keen eye for a through ball, both over the top and through the middle of a defense. He is probably the team's best chance of scoring from distance as well. The 30 year old has scored many times in the Ligue d'Île from outside of the penalty area and will look to notch a few more in the coming international season.

Forwards:

#10-Marine Fouché-age 29-CF Savenay
#11-Dominic Trion-age 25-Stade Barbotteau
#21-Marizanne Proliné-age 23-CF Riviera
#22-Sara Katjanović-age 28-FK SavaFluss (in Mattijana)

Sara Katjanović is very much the star player in this Saint Émelie side and is also the only player operating outside of Saint Émelie. The third-choice Savafluss striker has a Mattijanan father and a mother from the island and fortunately, can handle both the Mattijanan and French languages.

As a player, she is a real poacher. Diminutive in stature, the 28 year old knows how to find the back of the net and knows where to position herself to do it, complementing the pace and crossing style from the wingers.

Dominic Trion joins Katjanović up top and brings a very different skill set. Big, tall and handy in the air, he is much clumsier than his more agile partner, but even though opponents may know his game, dealing with it could be more of a challenge.

Tactical Notes:

Saint Émelie's isolation means that the style of football has deviated rather a lot compared to the rest of the world. It is in fact rather agricultural, with a lot of physical challenges and strong aerial play.
This means that the team will inevitably pick up cards. No malice is meant, but the physicality of the team will mean that injuries may occur.

Otherwise, Saint Émelie's style of football is actually fairly easy on the eye. Quick passing from front to back as well as movement on the wings is the game-plan and when it pays off, it looks great.
When it doesn't, it looks like an incoherent mess and if fans wish to be realistic, this is probably what they will get for the most part against some high-class defenses.

Your Visit to Saint Émelie

Image

If you're planning on visiting our island for the upcoming world cup qualifiers, there are quite a few things you should know before you arrive. Saint Émelie is a very different country to many of the ones you may have visited and its isolation also causes many quirks. This page will give you all the information you need to survive and even enjoy your trip here.

Getting Here:

Saint Émelie is situated in Eastern Atlantian Oceania and is part of an archipelago of islands, the majority of which are uninhabited. It is equidistant to its three nearest pieces of claimed land, Penguinata (part of Paripana), northern Falcania and the kingdom of Corelia.
Getting to the island is undoubtedly a tricky task. There is only one airstrip in the country, in Port D'Émelie and known simply as L'aéroport, and the runway is only long enough to accommodate regional flights. If you wish to arrive by air, you may need to make one or even two stops at regional and local hubs before your final flight to Saint Émelie, particularly if you are visiting from outside Atlantian Oceania. Powered flight is a phenomenon only introduced to us after gaining status as protectorate of Mattijana and as a result, facilities remain underdeveloped.

Despite this impracticality, air travel is the fastest way of getting here. You can also travel by boat from surrounding nations to the docks in Port D'Émelie, cutting out one of the air stops, however this will be incredibly time consuming over long distances. In theory, it is possible to swim, but this will probably end in death by exhaustion or due to incapactiation by a jellyfish or other marine creature. We therefore do not reccomend this mode of transport.

Getting here will not be the most enjoyable part of your time away, but it will be worth it.

On Arrival:

On your arrival in Port D'Émelie, the capital city of Saint Émelie, there is little you will have to do. Immigration is incredibly lax due to the islander's laid-back attitude, lack of visitors and the fact that if you happen to be an international criminal, there are easier places to go to do your thing. Do not be alarmed or confused if you are allowed into the country in mere minutes, but then have to wait an hour for your luggage to emerge. This is completely normal and due to the lack of mechanisation in the baggage reclaim system. Also do not be alarmed if your luggage contains dents or is damaged. This is due to the heavy-handedness of the baggage handlers and it is recommended you bring a hard suitcase and do not bring fragile items.

There is only one banned item in Saint Émelie. Guns of all kind are not permitted onto the island and will be screened for before you leave the airport or docks. Screening is not done using x-ray scanners or the like, but by cracking open your suitcase and having a good rummage. For our convenience please leave your suitcase unlocked before it goes on the plane or is presented to officials at the dockyard. This process is also partly responsible for the delay in presenting you with your luggage at the airport. Nothing will purposfully go missing, however if you don't trust us, or more legitamately those handling luggage at your country of origin, place valuable items in your handluggage.

Accomodation and Eating Out:

If you're looking for a plush five-star hotel, Saint Émelie is not for you. If you instead enjoy a collection of small guesthouses and bed and breakfasts, it is ideal. These will be found dotted around the major settlements on the island and vary in quality. Some places will offer very basic facilities and food whilst some will be very well-furnished and offer a large and varied breakfast. Prices will also vary, but will most likely offer good value for money compared to your home nation.
As with hotels, if you require a top of the range gastronomic experience, you will not find it here. What you will instead find is a number of seafront bars that offer an excellent range of fish and seafood, as well as the local selection of drinks. Animal meat is harder to come by, but mainly consists of goat and chicken. Many locals will also frequent these places due to the lack of tourism, so establishments will be friendly and offer food and particularly drink at good prices.

Food specialities include prawns, scallops or lobster with a variety of different sauces. Many bars will offer a choice of sauces to go with each type of seafood. Fish dishes often include cod, sea-bream and tuna whilst goat and chicken are often found in curry-style dishes with local vegetables and spices.

Local beers, spirits and cocktails provide the bulk of the drinks menu. Soft drinks of pinapple, grapefruit and watermelon juice are also available among others, and are infinitely more trustworthy than water sources, which are probably best avoided for hygiene reasons.

There is no official drinking age in Saint Émelie, it is simply up to parents to decide when a child is allowed to consume alcohol when together. This can either end very well or very badly depending on the responsibility and alcohol consumption of a child's family.

People:

People are people, and it is of course important to remember that individual personalities and values will vary, however the culture of Saint Émelie is very rich and is ingrained in the majority of islanders.
Fairly few foreigners visit the island and those that do are largely Mattijanan, so visitors from elsewhere are treated with curiosity and may attract attention in the streets, particularly if you are of a different ethnicity to the dark-skinned Saint Émileans. Despite this, natives relish the rare chance to meet someone from a different country and will be incredibly chatty, particularly in bars. The language barrier may be an issue. The official and most widely-spoken language is French and although English and Mattijanan are being spoken increasingly more across the country, vocab and grammar skills are still very limited. Brushing up on your French language skills is recommended before your trip and although the Saint Émelie dialect is much different to universal French, it will help you get by.

The general attitude on the island is likely much more laid-back than in your home country, so don't be worried or annoyed if it takes a lot of time to get what you wanted, or if you see something going on with incredible inefficiency. It's completely normal.

Saint Émileans are also very proud of their country and any insult to their food, culture or way of life will be taken very personally. Try to refrain from publicly moaning at things taking a long time to happen, islander's lack of professionalism or indeed anything else. However if you want to vent your frustrations in private, who are we to stop you.

Where to Go:

Your first port of call in Saint Émelie will be the capital city of Port D'Émelie in the north of the island. Calling it a city is a stretch as it will probably be the size of a small town in your homeland, however in Saint Émelie terms, it is a metropolis.
There are few actual attractions in Port D'Émelie, but it is a great place for to walk around. There is a charming mix of wooden and stone buildings, often brightly-painted, and the large market is a great place to pick up fresh fish, fruit and meats. Away from the docks, the seafront is lined with bars which are a great place to sit, have a drink and watch the world go by.

Away from Port D'Émelie, there are still places to go. Just down the coast is the village of Le Goutier, renowned across the island for its sports. Watersports such as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are all possible in the surrounding seas, whilst the beachfront also plays host to the island's top beach volleyball and beach football tournaments.

A short, but bumpy bus journey to the opposite side of the island will see you arrive in the town of Savenay. The town has a quieter feel compared to the hustle and bustle of Port D'Émelie, but has its own charm and is home to numerous traditional art museums and quirky coffee bars. There is also some beautiful rugged coastline to be found a short walk outside the town, which will be much less populated than beaches around Port D'Émelie or Le Goutier.

The Football:

The Saint Émelie FA has announced that two venues will be used for the upcoming world cup qualifiers, both of which are situated on the Port D'Émelie side of the island. The biggest is the Stade Duport on the outskirts of Port D'Émelie. This is a 7,000 seat stadium and home to club side CF Duport.

Image

The ground is somewhat delapidated, but is functional. If you have a sensitive bum, it is reccomended you bring with you a cushion as seating is fairly hard. Stalls and outlets selling classic Saint Émelean snacks such as prawns, peanuts and whitebait will be available on the stadium concourse.

The other stadium is a more left-field choice. La Stade de la Plage in Le Goutiér is named not because it is situated next to Le Goutiér's famous beach, but because it is on it.

You must be wondering how the clever locals have managed to grow some grass on top of the beach, or perhaps you might ask whether it is made of artificial grass. Well you need not wonder as the answer is revealed by the golden colour of the playing surface. It's a sandy one.

Whilst we admit that this is unusual, CF Le Goutiér have always played on sand and there are a few differences from your standard beach football pitch. First of all the pitch is the size of a standard grass pitch, which sounds incredibly tiring. Please bare in mind however that instead of loose, lumpy dry sand, the surface is damp and packed down to make for easier running and passing.
Saint Émelie will play barefoot for matches in Le Goutier and it is recommended that your side does the same. Whilst footwear is not outlawed, it may be impractical, you will have sand in your boots for at least the next 5 matches and it will hurt if you step on our player's tootsies.

Local supporters will be heavily partisan and probably very noisy. As in bars and general public places, locals will be keen to chat about your home nation and the game itself, but any arguments about a particular decision will see you heavily outnumbered. Actual violence is rare, but insults towards members of the Saint Émelie team will not be taken kindly, unless the crowd decide they don't actually like that team member any more.

Typical matchday food includes peanuts, pinapple and seafood such as prawns, whitebait and sardines. The usual range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available at stalls on the concourse and just outside of both stadiums.

Tactics
The more complete the circle next to the player's name is, the more adept at his role he is, compared to the position's other possible roles
Image

Ichi Tuzzio is much more of a strategist than a purist, and it shows in his approach to tactics. This is perhaps the (believe it or not) least attacking tactical set-up in the history of the Farf national team.

In goal, Íüé Tgô will be your traditional sweeper keeper. He will try not to be too messy with how he deals with the ball, though. Don't expect him to try to dribble past two or three defenders. The defense will consist of Kósa Bajnok, Ezequiel Marchiondo and Moisés Fermández. Bajnok will be tasked with starting counterattacks with precise long balls and also defending the massive hole in defense that this formation leaves. He's not that good with the ball on his feet, truth be told, but he is fantastic at reading the game and has great physical presence, which alleviates the pressure on the Farf defense considerably. Marchiondo and Fermández will help him out defensively, but they'll still prefer to play wide. The two of them will be extremely tired by the end of any match, since they'll be running up and down the pitch the entire time, as well as trying to keep as narrow a defensive shape as possible. Fermández will look for the underlap since he's right-footed. Marchiondo will look to overlap for the same reason.

The midfield will be the traditional Farf midfield of one holding midfielder, two offensive ones and two wingers, but with a twist! One of the offensive midfielders has become a traditional centre midfielder, and the holding midfielder has been given some attacking duties. The wingers have both been assigned more defensive roles, though they're still attacking ones. In essence: Sürgân t'Öéséné will be playing the fancily-named role of segundo volante. He'll be responsible for recovering the ball as any other holding midfielder, but he'll also look to arrive late at the box and go for perilous long shots or some smart assist. Groaré Sasca will be your classical centre midfielder, though, as a natural offensive midfielder, he'll have to adapt. On the left wing, Wçêíl will be running up and down the pitch, while coordinating his attacks with Fermández. He'll try to run down the flank consistently and go for crosses, though he's got a pretty dangerous right foot so you can expect him to suddenly cut in, too. On the right wing, Eleonóra will be expected to just sort of do his thing. Defend as much as he can at his age, and then use his still-impressive pace to get in as many corners as possible, as well as the occasional run towards goal that he likes so much. Faragó rue Cazade will operate in offensive midfield as a so-called shadow striker, also known as false ten. He will basically be a striker that plays deep, looking for spaces traditionally left unexploited. He'll also look for killer passes to cause further headaches to opposing defenses. Probably the most important role in this set-up, along with the segundo volante and the false nine.

Speaking of the false nine, he will be none other than Xíxì Êns, Farfadillis' best player, fresh off a triumphant AOCAF Cup run which saw him destroy defense after defense. He's rather minuscule, but it's hard to get him off the ball. As a false nine, he creates space for his teammates by dropping deeper and confusing the defense. He's fantastic at creating chances, so watch out for that. Also very good at finishing them, so overall a very troubling player to face, specially in this set-up. Finally, his partner up front will be (besides rue Cazade) Oskar Holsteiner, a forward that has everything needed to score goals. His job will be to finish the job whenever the ball gets to him.

The team will look to play a vertiginous game, with few passes wasted on recycling possession. Farves live to have the ball at their feet, but also to do something exciting with it. Expect them to press, counterpress and generally look desperate to recover the ball. The further up the pitch you manage to go with the ball, the more in danger they are. However, if you do lose the ball while attacking them, they'll almost always try to start a counterattack. They're very adept at it with their direct passes and astonishing pace, so try to make your chances count. Finally, the three-man defense will obviously use the off-side trap, as it's a natural choice with such a high defensive line and three players.

When holding a lead, the team will be much more eager to recycle possession and wait patiently for a goal. In that case, passes will still be direct, but less so. When chasing a game, though, expect some of the most urgent football the Multiverse has to offer.

As a final note, the players are quite versatile and can and will switch roles for periods of time at some point. Players likely to switch with each other are Êns with rue Cazade, Wçêíl with Eleonóra and, specially, Wçêíl with rue Cazade, with the former being a considerably shadow striker and the latter being actually a winger.

The bench consists of players of similar characteristics to the starting eleven, with the exception of Wìjìnì, who can play basically anywhere up front (including the wingers) and Lancelot Mojica, who can play anywhere centrally.

Coaches & Staff
Image
Manager - Image Pearly White (Earth Pony - Female) - 48
Appointed interim manager of the national team by the Hoofball Association following the resignation of Twilight Striker - the Ponies' long-time boss of some 12 World Cup campaigns - Pearly White secured the position on a permanent basis with a number of impressive performances against higher-ranked opposition in her first games at the helm, including a stunning upset of then-defending world champions Vilita in the 3rd Cup of Champions. Since then, Pearly White has done nothing to give her employers any doubts that she's the best pony for the job, leading the Equestrian States on a Runner Cup title run without dropping a single point and reaching the 4th Cup of Champions semifinals before capping it all off with a second round appearance at the World Cup finals.

Image
Assistant Manager - Image Dreamy Skies (Pegasus - Female) - 44
Not very long ago, Dreamy Skies was a rookie manager taking the reins of Second League club Whitetail Foresters. Her arrival had a near-instant impact on the club's fortunes as they were promoted to the United League the following season and now regularly contend for UICA berths, an incredible improvement in such a short period of time for a team once known largely for producing talent which was then poached by bigger clubs, at the Foresters' expense. When Pearly White first took charge of the Equestrian senior team, she managed to convince the HA that the still-young pegasus would be a strong addition to the Ponies' coaching staff, and thus far it has paid-off spectacularly. Players routinely praise Dreamy Skies for her enthusiastic optimism and superb work ethic which makes her a popular figure in the locker room and on the practice field.

Image
Assistant Manager - Image Lunar Dusk (Bat Pony - Female) - 44
The newest addition to the national team staff is Lunar Dusk, somepony few Equestrian hoofball fans were aware of just a few years ago but is today one of the best-known coaching talents in the Pony Lands. Like Dreamy Skies, Lunar Dusk's managerial career started in the second tier with Crystal Fair HC, a previously unremarkable side from the Crystal Empire which she transformed into a legitimate force within a few seasons thanks to a focus on quickly developing the Grounders' budding young stars into hoofballers capable of hanging with the best. After shattering numerous Second League records and earning promotion, Crystal Fair survived a relegation battle in their first ever United League campaign, broke into the top half the following season, and last year defied all expectations to come within a tiebreaker playoff of ending Crystopolis City's previously unchallenged monopoly on the Crystal Empire's Champions' Cup berth. With Lunar Dusk's undeniable talent for inspiring young players alone makes her a valuable addition to the staff, but her brilliant tactical mind makes her appointment by Pearly White a no-brainer.

Image
Goalkeeping Coach - Image Fire Blossom (Unicorn - Male) - 53
Responsible for training the Ponies' goalkeepers is Fire Blossom, whose exploits as a keeper in the old Equestrian Premier League earned him much respect amongst early Equestrian hoofball fans and eventually a job with the national team. Fire Blossom's prophetic praise of a teenage prospect named Gentle Breeze and his subsequent push for her initial selection to the senior team for World Cup 62 qualifying have since earned him a reputation as a natural judge of potential, not to mention a considerable amount of credit for Gentle Breeze's many successes.

Image
Scout - Image Diamond Star (Unicorn - Female) - 51
Originally chief scout under Twilight Striker with the Canterlot Royals, Diamond Star was later hired for the national team by the Royals' and Ponies' manager to help identify young Equestrian players with international potential, and the unicorn scout did not fail in her task. Among the current national team stars first scouted by Diamond Star are Thunderlane, Cloudchaser, Rainbow Blitz, and Pristina Shine. Now the manager of Stalliongrad HC, Diamond Star has seen her national team role diminished, though she still provides valuable advice to Pearly White regarding her observations of potential internationals within the United League.

Image
Scout - Image Golden Hooves (Earth Pony - Female) - 62
A veteran member of the Equestrian States staff, Golden Hooves has been around the national team for what seems like forever, her longevity speaking to her performance as a reliable scout. While fellow Ponies scout Diamond Star's focus lies primarily upon United League players and her evaluation of their potential with regards to the senior team, Golden Hooves is responsible mostly for scouting Equestrians on foreign clubs and assessing the Ponies' opponents and how their players compare with those available to the Ponies.

Image
Fitness Coach - Image Craig Jackson (Human - Male) - 51
Hired in the midst of the injury plague which characterized the Ponies' World Cup 63 qualifying campaign, Craig Jackson was the first human member of the Ponies' staff and has done well to keep Equestrian players' injuries minimal in the years since then. While fitness coaches generally don't get much respect or attention from the press, Jackson's gift for keeping players of various biologically-diverse species in near-perfect health throughout grueling tournament schedules which can push them above and beyond their limits is certainly nothing to be dismissed as trivial.

Team Strategy

Image
Note: Players' names and numbers may not be updated, see roster for details.

The Ponies' most-used formation is the slightly modified 3-5-2, preferred by former manager Twilight Striker because of the strength and dominance of the Equestrian midfielders. Thanks to the versatility of the Equestrian States' players, the formation gives the Ponies the ability to shift quickly from the offense to the defense and vice-versa. More recently, however, the Equestrians have begun to shy away from the 3-5-2 in favor of the 4-2-3-1 in order to strengthen the back line and keep their opponents guessing. Aside from the formations themselves, the Equestrians have a number of definitive strengths and weaknesses.

First, the Ponies are among the world's fastest and most durable teams, using their natural advantages to tire out opponents. With those two traits as the defining characteristics of the Equestrian style of play, the squad excels at producing chances in the latter stages of the match. But while the attack dominates the second half, opposing squads have occasionally found success going all-out at the start of the match in an attempt to build an insurmountable lead.

Another area in which the Equestrian States has traditionally dominated is in the aerial battles for headers. While the Ponies are generally shorter than their opponents, the team is often credited with impressive leaping abilities (particularly among the pegasai players). Controlling headers makes the team lethal on corner kicks, and opponents looking to defeat the Equestrians must limit the number conceded to the Ponies or else face a barrage of dangerous short-range shots from the Ponies' attackers.

APOX WORLD CUP 82 ROSTER

Manager: Luxulya St. Cleer, Aged: 43
Assistant Manager: Sverre Devold (BYN), Aged: 45
Style: -0.5

Spiel: Its the third time that the World Cup returns to Apoxian shores, will the Apoxian national side be able not be knocked-out in the Group Stages like usual when we host the biggest football tournament of them all? Well probably not, but this remains a strong side, even if their form in the last Campionato and pre-WC friendlies isn't all that great. Alpha Gandhi has now retired from international football - with a slight tinge of (largely due to events outside his control) what if? hanging over his career. There are strong players all through this team though, with Tregatta Spitfire moulding into the teams unquestioned first choice in goal now, while the ageing Imhotep Jekyll continues to anchor down the defense. The chosen midfielders of Menheniot, Townsend and captain Palmisano have many tournaments of experience playing with each other now, while up from Marcy Blake-Tatum has been given the prestigious number 9 shirt - previously worn by greats such as Dravid Scott, Tolgus Tregajorran and the aforementioned Alpha Gandhi. Will this finally be the tournament where an Apoxian side is found in the Quarter-Finals?

Luxulya St. Cleer has seen great success with her 4-1-2-3 formation and so it is of little surprise to see her sticking to it for another cup. The first team is pretty settled, although the spectacular form of Jarls Magarhatery in midfield means he is likely to see quite a lot of gametime this tournament. Up front, the young dynamic paand ir of Cassiopeia Quintero and Clarissa Ephraim-Garza are the currently preferred wide players, with the excellent domestic form of Marcy Blake-Tatum in the last few years seeing her get the nod in a starting role over the experienced Lucan Palmisano. At the back, there may be some rotation.

Home Away

Manager
Tobias Möller Image
Age: 56
There are few managers who would have had the mental fortitude to endure what the Marauders endured last World Cup cycle and still decide to stay on to the job and even keep on after the World Cup. The Marauders really lucked out to get a man as loyal and as driven to prove his doubters wrong as they have in the Pasargan Tobias Möller, with the former international striker looking to guide this hodgepodge of players into true World Cup contention, so long as the hero quartet can continue to live up to their name

Assistant Manager
Wisdom Tracey Image (F)
Age: 38
Tracey is far more defensive minded than what Vanorians are used to and would much prefer to see the side playing in a diamond midfield, but with the VSC saying that she will be considered for the job once Möller resigns from the position, she is content to be patient and help sure up the Marauders notorious backline faults in an attempt to build up her own profile.

Keeper

1 Sean Smørdal, Starling Image
Age - 26
Sex - M
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 181 lbs
Tall, athletic, and with reflexes that would make a cat proud, Smørdal is thought to be the solution to the Marauder's question between the pipes and solution to what has been an age old problem for the side. Deciding to leave the Eternal Empire's shores for that of Nephara is a decision that will be heavily scrutinized back home for years, but if the young keeper can come up good for the national team shirt, the Navy Wave will embrace him with open arms all the same.

Defenders

2 Iben Fjørtoft, Raynor City United
Age - 26
Sex - F
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 158 lbs
Iben is a quick defender that typically plays on the right side for her the Rockers but can play more centrally if needed to. She is a quiet force that doesn't like to get forward unless she absolutely needs to, preferring to be that agile cover defender that allows the more offensive minded midfielders to get into the attacking area.

3 Seve Vásquez Image , Mar Sara FC
Age - 30
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 175 lbs
A former Sunrisian, Vásquez has been in Valanora for over seven years and was quick to answer the call when the Marauders were in desperate need of professional players for the World Cup Finals after the Calling happened. He has fairly good pace for a man of his size but his main strength is battering opposing attacking players out of the box with the force of a rampaging oxen, though he is not quick to temper, making him well suited to the Marauders' style of play.

4 Lauritz Soltvedt, SC Rinaldi
Age - 30
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 173 lbs
Another one of the stalwart defenders from a long line of them being produced by the Gunners. Soltvedt is deceptively fast for his size and has a good acumen for the game as well, making him a well rounded defender that should do the job quite well when called upon.

Midfield

21 Espy va Drake, 1830 Cathair Image
Age: 775
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 159 lbs
After becoming a folklore hero for the lower class of the world, va Drake has made himself one of the living legends of the game after help leading the side to a title in World Cup 53. He has traveled far and wide while plying his trade, donning kits for no less than five countries clubs. Seen as the driving force in the middle of the park alongside Hawk, it is up to the opposition to try and figure out how to deal with the brilliance the winger and his other attackers have rather than them to create magic.

6 Yuki Hatsune Image, FC Capri
Age -26
Sex - M
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 147 lbs
This young midfielder was born in the Sunrise Islands but came to Valanora at an early age and has really blossomed over the last three seasons to a versatile midfielder, though he prefers to play a little further up the pitch in a more attacking role. He's got an accurate shot from long range and can mix it up with most other players in the middle in those fifty-fifty balls, though he would prefer to leave that part of the game to the defenders and more defensive minded midfielders.

10 Laborious Hawk, AC Izotz Zubia Image
Age - 739
Sex -M
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 213 lbs
Words do not even begin to define his talent, his talent defines words. He was awarded one of the spots that the Vanorians have in the World Cup Hall of Fame, with it being very well deserved, as he has and continues to earn everything he has been given every single day. Hawk simply strives to be the very best footballer, captain, and teammate that there can be, with the hunger for perfection driving him forth on and off the pitch.

8 Ilglerdiriel Lithvathar, Raynor City United
Age - 745
Sex - F
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 149 lbs
Lithvathar is much like va Drake, a floater who is dynamic in attack but with enough speed and sense of the pitch to make up on any sort of defensive lapse. Yet unlike her flankmate, she is not nearly as skilled, but do not let that fool you, in a moment of magic she can undress an entire backline and set up more prolific scorers with easy chances.

7 Faeron Soldarian, 1830 Cathair Image
Age - 653
Sex - M
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 163 lbs
Soldarian continues to live in the shadow of more well known players both on the national team and with his club. Despite this, Soldarian is seen by all on the squad as the emotional leader and the linchpin the in the middle that allows the more attacking minded midfielders being allowed to play their game.

Strikers

9 Allandren Fresco, Ibini FC
Age - 528
Sex - M
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 167 lbs
Fresco continues to lead the line of the attack, being the tip of the spear that is the Marauders offensive movement. By now most teams know of the striker's pace and near laser guided shot, however the striker still somehow finds ways to bring in the goals.

11 Marie Skaar, Mar Sara FC
Age - 30
Sex - F
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 148 lbs
A break out season with the Flames, being the third leading scorer in the Premiership as she helped lead them to an unexpected title sees this little lass nab the starting position after not being part of the pool at all two years ago. Her speed and agility is her greater asset, able to both outmanuever and simply run past her defenders with relative ease. What she has in speed though, she lacks in shot power, with the majority of her goals coming from inside the six.

Subs

With the fallout of original manager, Jon Merritt, still looming across T.V. City, the Blue-Reds of Qasden sought to renew their love for the beautiful game under former Filindostan assistant manager, Cralt-Nirlo Fox of Qusmo. Under Cralt-Nirlo, the Qads defied numerous odds to not only finish 2nd in their group, but qualify for the World Cup 81 proper without the means of playoffs, more-or-less making them responsible for the demise of Drawkland's perfect record. Competing in Banija, the Vans took home their first proper win, a 3-2 victory over Cassadaigua. While they started hot, however, they got cold immediately, dropping points to both Vilita and Valanora, costing them to bow out once again in 4th place. With the dismal end of a beautiful beginning, it came to no surprise that an anger-fueled fanbase ditched the new manager after failing to so much as garner a single victory in the following AOCAF competition.

Weakened like the bipolar fans they are, Qads sought comfort in the solace of David Bjarnasson, a Mercedinian madman managed his nation to glory in the 72nd Cup of Harmony. With him in charge, the Vans were reignited for the Vanorian-Apoxian held WC82. In a qualifier that not even Zachary Sols could imagine, TQ lasted 18 matches with a single loss handed to them, finishing a strong 2nd over sides such as Eastfield Lodge and surprise competitor, Brusseldorf. Travelling the Cawln and Barbury, the Vans stunned the world by defeating not only the bus lovers of 95X, but also handing the mighty dragons of Cosumar a 4-1 loss, allowing Qasden to win Group D despite a hiccup to Nephara. Now approaching Dwile, can the Blue-Reds keep their hot streak afloat in the knockouts? Will a Mercedinian do what no Qad could do and win the World Cup? All that and more are waiting to be discovered, right here, right now, at WC82: Here Be Dragons!
