Hey, For A Highschooler, I'm pretty into Old-Era music, especially 60's and 70's Music.

So, I'm compiling a playlist of such songs for me to buy on Itunes when I have the chance. NSGers, Do you have any such suggestions?

Italian singer-songwriters 60-70 years: Fabrizio De Andrè, Francesco Guccini, Roberto Vecchioni.Probably you are not Italian, but still recovers these.There are real pearls in their 70s.If you really want to overdo it looks at the Equipe 84. Not Italian comes to mind Al Stewart.

so here's how I'm gonna help you

1.) improved op so the thread doesn't get locked due to it being a blog

I as a high school student enjoy music from the 1960-1970's unlike most high school aged kids what is your favorite song, band, solo artist, or style of genre from this era of music and why do you like it and has it helped you get through tough times. Or what could have been done different like in terms of themes, instruments, singers taken before their time, style and flow you get the idea. Plus if you could go back who from that era would you most like to meet and or change. Of course any song you like hit me up with a link if possible, I might think about buying it on iTunes.

Many of the above posts already mentioned some great artists from those decades but I'll repeat some of them anyway: The Beatles (if you happen to like them, I'd also recommend John Lennon's solo albums "Plastic Ono Band" and "Imagine", George's Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album, and Paul McCartney and the Wings), Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Bob Marley...those are classics. The band Shocking Blue is also relatively underrated. There are also some specific songs I'd recommend by artists which I don't really listen to much otherwise: "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits, "The Logical Song" and "Dreamer" as well as "Breakfast in America" by Supertramp, "Hotel California" by Eagles, "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot, "Two Sevens Clash" by Culture.

There are also great gems outside of the realm of English-language music. Harmonium is a great folky/progressive Quebecois band, their most (relatively) well-known song is "Pour un instant" but my favourite is probably "Dixie". Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) is a very talented Italian progressive band, their most well-known song is "Impressioni di settembre" but my favourite is probably "Celebration", which is one of their English songs. I'd also specifically recommend the song "Emmenez-moi" by Charles Aznavour. Finally, there is a whole genre called Anatolian rock, which was quite alive in Turkey during the 1960s and 1970s. Some of the greats from that genre are Barış Manço (some of his most well-known songs are "Dönence", "Gülpembe", and "Arkadaşım Eşşek"), Cem Karaca ("Tamirci Çırağı", "Namus Belası", "Çok Yorgunum"), and Erkin Koray (I'd recommend "Cemalim", "Krallar", and "Mesafeler"). There is a YouTube channel dedicated to the genre (note that some of these songs aren't available on iTunes).

Alright, I'm not going to out classic rock you all, so I'll go for parallel music.

1960: Miles Davis-Sketches of Spain, a masterpiece of 3rd Stream jazz and one of three collaborations with Gil Evans.

1964: John Coltrane-A Love Supreme, a lengthy jazz improvisation in several suites.

Also 1964: Eric Dolphy-Out to Lunch, free jazz album.

If you can handle that, then maybe you're read for The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra.

Now for the slow transition:

1969: Miles Davis-Bitches Brew, fusion pioneering album, before fusion became Kenny G and Dave Koz and shit.

Also consider Tony Williams Emergency! I listened to this a lot in High School and kind of forgot that...

1973 Herbie Hancock-Headhunters, saw this live. It was awesome.

1973 Mahavishnu Orchestra-Birds of Fire, if you're looking for more guitar heavy stuff with more rock than funk.

If you're so inclined, a rock guy reaching over to jazz instead of the other way around, Frank Zappa-The Grand Wazoo

For more accessible fusion without it being pap, Weather Report-Heavy Weather

And then the other stuff:

Funkadelic, my favorite. Same band, different take basically. Usually just listed as Parliament Funkadelic.

That's enough of a list that you probably stopped checking somewhere around Out to Lunch, but it's a little variety. Variety is good.
