OOC: no, this is actually my third nation - I started my first nation around 2011-12, and I don't remember its name. In 2012, I moved on to create Kayana, which lasted until mid-2014, when I got bored of NS. Then in October last year, I came back, and here we are.

'This is actually a little hard to answer, but if I have to guess, it's free-market capitalism, mixed in with some socialistic and environmental ideas. Ooh, I could give it a name for that!'

OOC: When did you first gain an interest in politics/nation-running?

(For politics, I'd say between 2016 & the American presidential election, due to me looking round Facebook right-wing accounts [of which at the time there were many, & still are], & seeing the most arse-brained comments I've ever seen.)
(For nation running, I actually can't give you a definite answer - I'm guessing around 2010/2011-ish?)

(OOC: Simply because it's really annoying to explain to everyone why I choose to be named without the Y, tl;dr someone took the name that I wanted.)

IC: "How did Astoria first get its sovereignty/independence/establishment?"

IC: 'Well, you see, originally Astoria was a monarchy, which controlled most of the island. However, in the late summer of 1643, the King of the day decided to impose taxes on all of his subjects, including the nobles. Delegations were sent from each corner of the island in order to try and persuade the King to reconsider his decision, though he refused. Keep in mind that the taxes were not adjusted according to each person's financial status, so if you were rich, you wouldn't really feel the pinch. However, like the majority of Astorians at the time, if you were a farmer, then the taxes took a big chunk out of your savings. As you might guess, both townspeople and country folk were not amused by the King's decision, which set off a popular revolt calling for the King's overthrow. On August 26th, he was booted from power, and unlike other revolts, didn't result in him being executed. The King still held some power in the new Parliament's decision-making, but would ultimately never prove to be a greater force ever again, and his descendants are still accorded that same little privilege. On August 27th, a new republic was declared, with an unprecedented new constitution. Thanks for asking!

(OOC: You may not believe it, but I inadvertently found it through our 'saviour' Max Barry himself - I'm not even joking! Let me explain: I was on one of those city-building websites, specifically this one. So one day in 2013 as I was playing it, I noticed a new user by the name of

herbshire

. I then introduced myself to him, and somewhere along the line of conversation, he said that he was the creator of this very site. I took one look at the homepage, and noticed the millions of nations counter, which looked rather suspicious. I later inquired whether he wasn't just one of those spambots which were common in the game's forum, and he seemed to convince me that yes, he did actually create NS. Intrigued, I then set up a nation under the name of Kayana, and well, here we are.)

'We think that they could be quite a good trading partner to deal with - though we are a little wary of the fact that they appear to not only have weapons of mass destruction, they also seem too have chemical & biological weapons.
However, (cut this out if you do not use NS stats) we have found out that the nation appears to use capital punishment, which, unless it was last used decades ago, makes us not only hostile to such a nation, but also, we will not do any sort of business with them, or let any of their citizens into our country ; and vice versa. This is because we don't want our citizens to end up like this - ie. we don't need them coming back in body bags.

'Well basically, the name "Astoria" is just the Anglicising of the state that was already in existince when the British arrived, called Akdalau. Apparently, they could not pronounce such a name, so they decided to replace it with a name that was slightly easier for them to wrap their tongues around.'
