you can just trace over real pictures at the same scale, it requires about as much skill as copying and editing some junior general templates but you get something that feels a bit less like stealing (copyright of the photos aside)
That is true, although it's harder to do in paint, maybe easier in photoshop. As well, you can maybe find a program that converts stuff to 16 bit or so, and just fill in the blanks yourself to make it look pretty. Although I have yet to find a good converter xD
