H. M. BOARD OF TOURING

The Board of Touring is proud to welcome people from around the world to the beautiful islands of Great Nortend.

About Great Nortend
Great Nortend is a small island country comprised of three major islands: Lesser Erbonia, Greater Erbonia and Cardoby. It is a kingdom, currently reigned over by King Alexander the Second, with three constituent nations: Nortend, Cardoby and Hambria. The de facto language is mostly English, however there are some pockets where Murish and Barardian are still spoken. There is a population of 32 million people, mostly fairly religious, and unafraid of hard work. The capital city of Great Nortend, and of Nortend itself, is Lendert-with-Cadell, which is also the largest city in the country whilst the capital of Hambria is Rhise.

H. M. BOARD OF TOURING

The Board of Touring is proud to welcome people from around the world to the beautiful islands of Great Nortend. The Kingdom of Nortend, Cardoby and Hambria is a country of contrast; from balmy summer days in the corn fields to magical winter nights at Christmas, a holiday in Great Nortend is unlike any other in the world. Only in Great Nortend can tourists see the Three Towers of Lendert, Sulthey Cathedral, the University of Aldesey, Stole Park, and the Palace of St Michael'sgate, as well as explore the green countryside of Nortend, the picturesque Monmorian alps and glaciers, the charming sea-side villages and towns of Cardoby, and the enchanting broadleaf and mixed woodlands and moors of Hambria.

Nortan curiosities
Little electricity use
The most dramatic difference between Great Nortend and other comparable Western European countries is the lack of general electricity use and most modern amenities using it, such as television, refridgerators, dishwashing machines and computers. Electric light is becoming popular, and is widespread in many homes and businesses in cities and towns; however, gas still provides nearly all street lighting and coal and wood meet the heating needs of the population. Holidaymakers will be interested to notice how Nortans manage tasks which in their home countries, would be performed using electricity.

A unique currency
Great Nortend does not use a decimal currency. It is near unique in this respect in this current day and age, and the only country that still uses the venerable system that Charlemagne himself promulgated. The Nortan pound marten is divided into twenty shillings, the shilling into twelve pennies, and the penny into four farthings. A penny purchases a lot as well, unlike the comparatively worthless pennies and cents of many world currencies. The Nortan pound marten is the most valuable currency in the world, with one pound being worth around 120 US dollars or 90 British pounds sterling.

No metric in sight
Following on from the Nortan pounds, shillings and pence, tourists may not be surprised to learn that the metric system is not used in Great Nortend. Instead, the traditional Catherinian system is used, said to have been designed by Queen Catherine the First herself, by combining and unifying the various disparate measurements together into one single, cohesive system. Luckily for English-speakers, the terms and relations are quite similar to the traditional English system of measurements, meaning that the common units of inches, yards, miles, feet, pints, quarts and gallons are all used with approximately the same values.

A classic dress sense
Many tourists have likened the peculiarly Nortan dress sense as a mix between Victorian formality and 1950s English casual. On the city streets tourists may be interested to see businessmen in frock coats and bowler hats, barristers in wigs and robes, ladies in elegant coloured dresses and children in blazers. That is not to say Nortans don't wear more informal clothes, and indeed, sporting coats, casual shirts, blouses and skirts are often worn in the country by men and women respectively. However, holidaymakers will be hard-pressed to find T-shirts and jeans being worn; the former is considered essentially underwear and the latter a sort of avant-garde import.

Ports of entry
The most popular port of entry into Great Nortend is by aeroplane, at Royal St Christopher's Airport, which is the only civilian airport on all three islands. It is located on the Isle of Dalwater, a peninsular only twenty-five miles from Lendert-with-Cadell.

If arriving by ship, most commercial sea liners dock at either Faunslaughter, Rhise or Sorredge. All three are on the national railway network, and most liners have connecting boat trains scheduled. Therefore, no matter how one arrives on Great Nortend, one can be sure to be able to quickly get to where one wants to go or needs to be.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for your enquiry and kind offer of opening a representative office in Odakyo. We currently are not looking to open any offices abroad; however, we are open to accrediting travel agents as official Board of Touring accredited agents.

In response to your query, Great Nortend has no 'national parks' per se officially designated as such. The closest thing to a protected national park would be Royal Forests. A Royal Forest is an area where the Forest Law is enforced by Crown appointed foresters, wardens or 'verderers'. Though traditionally they were established to provide wood, sustenance and good hunting for royalty or royal foundations, nowadays they are more often considered public common land for the use and enjoyment of all. There are thirteen Royal Forests, which are: the Forest of Rhighton, Forest of Clerkinweld, Berringham Forest, Lournwood Forest, Bunterwood Forest, Swannelwood Forest, Forest of Allord, Forest of Cannorly, Forest of Anerburn, Forest of Pinbury, Forest of Stenmoor, Middle Forest and Old Forest. Most of these forests are very ancient in age, however in sections are reserved for the use of the commoners residing near or in the forest for pollarding. Commoners also usually have other rights, such as the right to graze their cattle, pannaging their cattle, collecting firewood and cutting turf.

Another somewhat analogous concept is an Countryside Preserve, established under the Preservation of the Countryside Act, 1944. A countryside preserve is a designated area of land that is particularly remarkable for either its beauty, natural history significance, or distinctive culture. They are administered by the Royal Society for the Preservation of the Countryside which is tasked with ensuring the maintenance of the area's natural landscape, features and cultivation relevant to its classification. This involves coordinating with local parish vestries, town councils, and local lords, landowners and tenants, by providing funding for improvement works, eradicating foreign weeds, and promoting the preserves for touring and visitors.

Please do not hesitate to write again, and I hope that your queries have been answered.

I beg to remain, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant.

An e-mail to boardoftouring@government.gn

To
The Great Nortan Board of Touring

Sir/Madam

I am contacting you as a representative of Condé Nast La Mize, a travel magazine based out of St. Louis, Mizialand. We are planning an article on Great Nortend for the purpose of which we have the following questions for you:

  • How far has the concept of "Victorian Morality" influenced the society of Great Nortend?
  • What problems, if any will prospective tourists face regarding the use of electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets etc.?
  • How far can a person travel with only basic working knowledge of heavily French, Dutch or German accented English?
  • We have noted that there are no rights on "Freedom from discrimination based on race or religion". Thus how safe is Great Nortend for Mizia tourists who are a. atheists (35%) or Non-Christian denominations (42%); b. of Bengali and Maghreb (the largest minorities) descent (5,5%) ?

I thank you for your time and hope for a speedy response to the aforestated questions.

Dear Mr Bolier,

Thank you, Sir, for your e-mail to the Board of Touring dated the 22nd day of February, 2019. I am pleased to be able to offer you a reply to your four questions.

1. “How far has the concept of "Victorian Morality" influenced the society of Great Nortend?”
The general concept of “Victorian Morality” as it influenced the society of the United Kingdom during the reign of Queen Victoria, with values of restraint, ethics, lawfulness, cleanliness and godliness, is somewhat applicable to Great Nortend, which has had a far longer history of such values. Even in the 17th century, many foreigners wrote of the polite and tender society with a focus on self-improvement, resilience and a good work ethic, backed by church morals and Christian ethics, which to this day remain fundamental pillars of Nortan society. Being not a researcher of Nortan society, I am unfortunately not able to give you a more in-depth answer.

2. “What problems, if any will prospective tourists face regarding the use of electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets etc.?”
Larger electronic machines such as laptop computers may not be brought into the country, however smaller machines such as portable cameras and mobile telephones may be. The main problem with them will likely be of electricity supply. Electrical power is mostly only used for domestic lighting purposes, and is quite rare outside of the larger towns and cities and tourists may find it difficult to find a place where to supply their electronic contraptions with electrical power. Most hotels in towns and cities do offer rooms especially for tourists where portable cameras and the like may be charged up; however, the supply may only be available at certain times.
A secondary problem which tourists are likely encounter is the lack of public Internet access or mobile telephone signal. Great Nortend does not have normal provisions for mobile telephones or the widespread personal use of the Internet, other than mobile satellite telephones and satellite Internet access. If tourists feel it is necessary to use their mobile telephones or the Internet on their own computers, the Board of Touring advises them to purchase satellite alternatives. Alternatively, telephone access through private telephones and public telephone kiosks is available, the latter for a small fee, and Internet access is available at most branches of the Royal Library.

3. “How far can a person travel with only basic working knowledge of heavily French, Dutch or German accented English?”
As Great Nortend is almost completely monolingual, excepting the scholarly and ecclesiastical use of Latin, and some native Gallican or Romanesque languages, a grasp of the English tongue is essential if any person wishes to travel in Great Nortend. At the very least, the ability to use common phrases is required. Accent is unlikely to be a major problem in the major towns and cities, as the standard Nortan accent is fairly easy to understand owing to its similarity to Received Pronunciation and Cultivated Australian pronunciation and regional accents are heavily dulled in such metropolitan areas. French is also widely understood, as well as the rudiments of Latin. In rural areas it may be difficult to be understood, or to understand the local accent and dialect.

4. “Thus how safe is Great Nortend for Mizia tourists...?”
Great Nortend is one of the safest countries in the world, and is welcoming to foreign tourists who wish to visit. Whilst the Board of Touring cannot guarantee the safety of any person visiting, it can be said that it is exceedingly unlikely that any person would be physically abused or battered. The fact that there is no statutory provision for the protection against discrimination based on race or religion does not mean that Norchmen are inclined to violence on these grounds. Indeed, violence in public is exceedingly socially unacceptable, and towards guests reprehensible. As a precaution only, it would be advisable that tourists not openly declare their irreligiosity or adherance to other religions, and especially not attempt to proselytise others in the way of other religions as it is a statutory crime. To shew politeness, it would be too recommended that tourists not loudly converse in their own languages nor act in a potentially offensive manner. Please do note that phrases used in Nortan English, such as 'Arabian', 'Mohammedan', 'Chinaman' and the like do not necessarily carry the negative connotation they may have in other places.

I hope that I have answered your questions to your satisfactorion, and humbly praying that you will honour me with a copy of your article after publication, I beg to remain, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant.

I have two OOC questions, if that's okay.
What inspired you to make Great Nortend?
Despite existing in 2020, your country is far behind in technology compared to a normal MT nation. Are there any specific IC reasons for that?

I'd also like to sincerely compliment you on the depth and quality of your factbooks and general worldbuilding.

Factbook completion will occur when hell freezes over and this nation is basically what happens at 3 AM when I overdose on Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Game of Thrones. Trans rights or you're getting kneecapped.
Center-right largely-absolute monarchy populated by the majority-pagan descendants of a mix of Vikings, Iron Age German rednecks and the odd shipwreck survivor coming into its own on the world stage during the final stages of a 32-year watershed moment under the watchful eye of an emperor who was never supposed to be one. Strict MT, current year though lore posts are generally asynchronous. Brettain is a catchall demonym, flag waifu by Polish Prussian Commonwealth, NS stats not canon.

1. I had invented countries since I was in year 3 with my friends, although back then they were populated by non-human creatures. I first saw NS later on, but I didn't get the appeal of answering questions. However, later I joined after a friend did, and though he's left, I'm still here.

2. Yes, there is an IC reason. It was a response to the rapid industrialisation which began in the 19th century, resulting in a romantic agrarian response towards preserving the “Nortish” ideal. This had the support of both landowners and workers, given that the landowners would lose income and influence if their “serfs” left the land, and the workers would lose a guaranteed house and income if they left for the cities. The Parliament passed various laws, such as the Farming Practices Act, which banned the fuelled mechanisation of agriculture, and reasserted the traditional chamber law doctrines relating to corporate tortious liability. Combined with strict limits on the creation of companies, which generally do not grant members limited liability, technological development has been limited to those fields which the Government supports (which results in the issuance of royal charters of incorporation with limited liability and fault-based tortious liability).

Thank you for your compliment!
