Up Close and Personal: Altino

Wymondham's second article in the Up Close and Personal series talks to Altino, Pharaoh of Osiris, about politics, her plans for succession and her rise to the top.

Below is a short excerpt from the article;
Syberis announced his intent to abdicate in April of 2018 and Altino says that she did not join Osiris with the intent of gaining the delegacy and with regards to her reaction when Syberis announced his abdication, she had this to say:

“Uhhhh… Give me a couple days to think about it.” I didn’t really come to Osiris with delegacy on the menu. Lol. I was there to help Syb, but I definitely didn’t want to replace him. Osi’s been my home since I walked in the door, but it’s not my first parade in regional leadership. Regional leadership is exhausting, and I already knew that. But at the end of the day, I’ve always put what I thought was good for Osiris over what I personally preferred, so I accepted.”

Readers,

Our goal since the conception of NationStates Today has been to provide a consistent news source for everything and everyone in NationStates. Our goal has been to provide a news source for those who want unbiased but insightful coverage of events big and small. Our goal was not met on Saturday, January 19th, when a Saturday newspaper was due to be published.

Our writers and our readers were let down -- the hard work that our staff put in to ensure that the news was delivered to our readers was never rewarded. Our readers were never delivered the product of our staff’s effort.

We’d like to first clarify why the Saturday newspaper was not published. First, our Chairman, who is responsible for our web operations, general management, and other editorial duties, was and currently still is on an extended leave of absence due to a cross-continental trip. The Chief Content Officer, who creates the newspaper PDF and contributes to editorial efforts, was also on a leave of absence from Friday to Sunday, when most of the work necessary to publish the newspaper edition is done. Acknowledging this, we recognize that the lack of a plan to hand off the publishing efforts to our Graphics & Publishing Team and to appoint interim editors.

In light of this, we’d also like to talk about two changes that are being made to the NationStates Today operation. First, the “Saturday Edition” newspaper will be renamed to the “Weekend Edition” newspaper in order to give more flexibility to our writers and publishers. Second, we’ve appointed Precoixious, our former Chief Legal Officer, to the position of Human Resources Director and member of the Board to effectively manage incoming staff applications. Third, we’ve appointed Wymondham, our Osiris correspondent and Up Close and Personal columnist, to the position of Interim Gameplay Editor and Llo, our Leftist Assembly correspondent, to the position of Interim Politics Editor. The two will be helping out with editing gameplay and politics articles from our writers as we expand our operations.

As always, we will be publishing Volume 2, No. 3 of the Weekend Edition newspaper this weekend. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us on Discord.

To Whom It May Concern,

The Board has been informed by our Chief Content Officer, Brihimia, that he will be unable to produce our weekend edition for the time being. In line with that, I have made interim appointments with the aim of restarting weekend publishing as soon as possible, either in the same format as before or in a format that works better for our publication.

We are closing out our initial interviews for editors and will be making final appointments this evening or tomorrow morning. With that further organisation skeleton in place, I hope to return to regular article publishing as soon as possible - as I have stated before, my aim is to see 2 to 3 articles published on our website a week. Once the issue of publishing and editing has been resolved, I will propose the corporate charter to our writers for initial discussion and approval, followed by a public consultation. If approved in its current form, writers will elect 4 governors to oversee executive operations, and the readership will elect 1 such governor.

Furthermore, in line with the vote held in this channel on the 12th of January, the @Visitor role will now be mentioned whenever a new article is released. This is provisional, and I am considering alternate ways of doing it.

“This idea that UCRs and their members are an invasive species is one of the most ludicrous and appalling ideas I have read. Francoism stinks of fascism, and like fascism is a true threat to the game. They cannot seriously and effectively reason that UCRs and their people are a threat to them. Not when, in truth, UCRs and GCRs are the same. We both put governmental systems in place. We both worry about the security of our region. We both have established cultures. How are we different? It’s the same argument that fascism and Nazism brought forth to further their causes. As said by Hermann Goering at the Nuremberg Trials: ‘The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.’”

This is disgusting. I'm not a friend to the NPO and don't think I ever will be, but comparing the NPO to the Nazis and to fascists is beyond the pale. That it wasn't challenged by your reporter - then again, considering they are part of the NPO delenda est crew - is immensely disappointing.

Europeia should be ashamed of the words of it's president.

Okay, what? This is simply outrageous. I'm certainly no friend of the NPO, but this is crossing the IC/OOC line. Calling someone fascists due to an in-game ideology which they follow is just disgusting. No one here is fascist, and comparing the NPO, or any other group which is not fascist for that matter, to an ideology that killed millions is unacceptable. I don't like the NPO IC, doesn't mean I have to resort to calling them fascists (indeed, I get along relatively well with some NPOers OOC).

While Europeia is our ally and we do not currently have diplomatic relations with the NPO, I do not feel that I can let this comment pass.
I hope that friends can call out friends when they have erred.
Regardless of what the NPO has done, equating them with Nazis is going far beyond the bounds of civil discourse.
Doing so insults good people, trivializes the Nazi horror and calls one's judgment into question.
In the future, I would hope that regions can disagree without resorting to hyperbole and incivility.

I don't agree with the outrage here, NPOers over the years have often winked at, and toyed with Stalinist and ethno-nationalist themes. Their spokespeople have borrowed liberally from the same "anti-globalist," anti-semitic rhetoric that depicted people as rats in "the deep state"; they've also encouraged a culture of exaltation that even led one Emperor to resign, saying he felt uncomfortable that youth in the NPO acted much like the youth he saw in the Bosnian War.

The name, "New Pacific Order" is undoubtedly an unsubtle wink to Neuordnung, Hitler's "New Order," alternatively Neuordnung Europas, "New European Order."

Critics here are saying that NPO is allowed to lift from these sources and change a few terms, and not only do they not have to be held responsible for it, the people who point this out ought to be ashamed for equating them with the very source material they've emulated.

Let's play a game. It's called, what is Proper Francoist Thought and what is Mein Kampf? Plus some Stalin/Mussolini/Francisco thrown in for colour. I've replaced "jew" with "userite."

While the superiority complex imbued within Francoism is exclusionary and runs contrary to the values of Europeia and other User-Created Regions, my comments in NationStates Today went too far. I wish to apologize for conflating Francoism with Nazism. Europeia recognizes the steps NPO is taking in their pledge to end Francoism. Europeia will continue to promote the values of inclusion and respect among all willing to communicate civilly.
