I don't disagree, necessarily, but Ameri also has a point. Up to that point we hadn't seen that level from Quark on the show, and then suddenly he goes from like a 7 to a 15. There's a bit of a whiplash in that episode that makes it feel disingenuous.

I'd say 13 to 15. Quark is constantly displayed as a rather despicable individual, even if we can sometimes sympathize with him. For me, at least, his actions in the union episode are just a natural continuation of his established behavior and character.
Unlike Ameri though I think the episode was entirely merited and foreshadowed Rom's ascension to Grand Nagus. Quark represents the old Guard Ferangi, Rom represents the new. It's more of an allegorical episode about the change in Ferangi culture than a real propagandish piece about Unions and what not.

That's an interesting take on it, although I think that sort of interpretation relies a bit too heavily on the series's Ferengi story arc when considering episode-specific themes.

Also, the two of you should probably stop trading shots over each other's bows. Both of you seem to agree that purely political discussion does not belong here, so I see no reason not to simply stop making purely political posts beyond a desire to have the last laugh.

He's despicable by human standards. By Ferengi standards, he's a ludicrously generous employer. I mean the way Brunt talked, the very concept of vacations is very un-Ferengi.

And let's not forget the catalyst of that episode Rom giving himself an infection from jerking it too much.

That's fair. Quark is essentially a bridge that allows us to gain an insight into the backwardness of the Ferengi society we see early in the series. He gives us a relatively mild taste of it so that we can swallow the total absurdity of Ferenginar itself.

Exactly. Now I'm not saying he's a saint by any means. But he's not the complete, uncaring douchebag that episode wrote him as. I mean look at "Business As Usual". Only goes into weapons sales cause he's out of options. Enjoys it for a while. Then he sells them all out with no guarantee of himself surviving when he realizes he's dealing with monsters.

That's Quark. Greedy, kind of an asshole, but not evil.

Well now.

Looks like someone's plotted a course for the Threadjack quadrant and it's up to Captain James T. Berk here to help you find your way back.

Locking this thread for a few minutes and having a sift through the last few pages. Let's all sit down and have some tea earl grey hot.

It's one thing hijack a thread in order to have a shitfight. That happens fairly often on NS.

It's quite another to acknowledge the fact that you're having a bit of a threadjacky shitfight and then to continue on regardless. I'm still struggling to suppress a smile at the sheer cheek of it.

New Haven America, this is a *** warning for threadjacking ***.
Tarsonis, this is a *** warning for threadjacking ***.

You've both made your point at some length. Please end this spat now.

ANYWAY, new Discovery was, yet again, pretty old school Trek.
Since that's 4 out of 4 so far this season, I'm gonna say that season 1 not always being great (though I enjoyed it) just falls under the usual first season sucking tradition of the Franchise.

I liked the whole malfunctioning universal translator bit.
Never got why that's never been a big thing on Trek shows before, considering everything breaking on a ship is like a bi-weekly thing.

I hope they keep Tig Notaro around, cause she reminds me of Bones.
Plus the banter between her and Stamets could be fun, going by what we got so far.

But I suppose in a weird way Voyager was extremely lucky avoiding the Dominion war.

Well, there was a war going on. Chances are if no Dominion War, Nog wouldn't have been so fast-tracked.

Indeed. Plus, there's almost no room for advancement on Voyager, short of a more senior officer buying the farm. And furthermore, half of the ship is Maquis. They probably dumped all the less-knowledgeable Maquis on Kim. Tuvok was afraid of mutiny, so he probably kept as much of his staff Starfleet as possible. Hard to imagine that many Maquis having a lot of Starfleet engineering experience, so much of Torres's staff is likely fleet as well. Nav/helm is probably mostly Maquis, but that still requires some advanced knowledge. Apparently, aside from Kes, the Doctor never needed much help, so limited slots in Medical. All you have left is Ops and Science, which Kim headed. So anyone without enough technical experience to compete with a fleeter in any other department is left scrubbing plasma conduits, mopping up the holodeck, sliding their fingers up and down the transporter controls, looking out a window to make sure the visual sensors aren't glitching out, etc.

Your forgetting about Harry Kim who deserved a promotion so badly. I mean Nog got promoted quicker he joined the academy at the end of series 3 not long after Voyager went to the delta quadrant, came back to DS9 near the end of series 5 as a cadet, became an ensign at some point in series 6 and became a lieutenant in the last episode, all before Voyager came back. But I suppose in a weird way Voyager was extremely lucky avoiding the Dominion war.

Well, there was a war going on. Chances are if no Dominion War, Nog wouldn't have been so fast-tracked.

It is no surprise really, as the war resulted in catastrophic Federation losses. I don't ever remember a casualty number being given in any of the episodes though.

The Irradiated Wasteland of The New California Republic: depicting the expanded NCR, several years after the total victory over Caesar's Legion, and the annexation of New Vegas and its surrounding areas.

Not directly related, but why haven't I seen "AR-558, but instead of Vic Fontaine, its Fortunate Son"?
