Ephyral law permits prostitution as a valid trade. It is defined as the "sale of sexual affection in exchange for direct financial payment or long-term financial aid." Prostitutes in Ephyra are typically divided into two main categories, translated commonly to 'whores' and 'companions'. The former are the most common, usually female, and are a mixture of freeborn, freed (former slaves), and slave status. Both freeborn and freed prostitutes must register with local authorities as a prostitute, a process which permanently places the name of the individual on a register, to legally practice the sex trade. Once registration is complete, this is about as far as any extensive regulation goes. Registration requires the correct full name of the prostitute to be given, along with their place of birth, their age, and intended practising name.

The law stipulates that no female may be prostituted whether she be freeborn, freed, or a slave, if she is not at least of the age of menarche. The age for males is legally given as fourteen (14). Once registration of a freeborn or freed individual as a prostitute is complete, they are licensed to practice their sex trade, and may seek employment at brothels or will autonomously prostitute themselves. Slaves however, as full property of their owners be they individual or corporate, require no such registration and may be sold sexually so long as this is in compliance with other trade laws and age laws. Freeborn or freed prostitutes who are unregistered with the authorities when they begin practising will, if caught, be legally stripped of their present standing and sold into slavery. Any brothels utilising unregistered prostitutes will also be fined, encouraging compliance with these laws.

Any free prostitute is forever marked as such by permanent entry on the list, and also subject to both this legal and social concept of disrepute, often resulting in minimal protections for such workers. These protections are even lower for those prostitutes who are also slaves.

Prostitutes who work brothels are seen as superior in quality to those who do not, and are trusted to be more regularly checked for infections or diseases. Brothels however can themselves vary massively in quality, quantity, and price, with brothels catering specifically the upper-wealthier classes, offering 'trained' prostitutes of more exotic beauty and behaviour, whilst others may focus on quantity over quality, and opening themselves to a wider and more affordable market.

'Companion' is a term given to those prostitutes who through means of class or ability are able to avoid the more public and open service of lower prostitutes, and take part in what some consider 'relationships' with clients of particular standing in wealth and power. This manifests less a direct trade of money for sex, but rather as long-term financial upkeep for companionship which includes sexual services but is not exclusively limited to such. The Ephyral version of courtesans in effect, such prostitutes are often above the social disrepute earned by regular prostitutes, and their company may be sought after as desirable. The window of desirability for such companions however is often short, and such women will inevitably end up as the same type of prostitute they are considered superior to if they fail to acquire enough financial security during their window of opportunity. Companions are most often the daughters of more well off families, disgraced for one reason or another, and whose higher class education and upbringing brings the facade of sophistication to what is little more than a long-term rental of affection.

So long as the frequenting of a brothel belies no sexual weakness of indulgence and a lack of self-discipline in a man, there are no social repercussions for a man using the services of a prostitute no matter his status. Some however shun the practice as base and an excess even when exercised moderately, whilst others still succumb to that same indulgence, taking what little comfort is available in the embrace of whores that their self-imposed misfortune has denied from a wife.
