Jacob Kadesh was not far off from the twins, now and then sneaking a look at them, but too shy to do much about it. He was focused on a math problem anyway. The skinny but nice looking son of a senior civil service bureaucrat in the Ministry of Tourism, he was among a curious sizeable minority of Edomites among the collection of children of foreign diplomats and businesspeople. 'If a rifle fires a bullet straight up with a muzzle speed of 300 m/s, how high will the bullet rise? (Ignore air resistance)' he mumbled to himself, unconsciously sticking his tongue out against his upper lip as he often did while thinking.
Meanwhile, a thin, pale boy from Lazodiria named Rene Lamontagne with dark hair from Lazodiria along with a few other kids were playing some music to keep everyone relaxed. They played classical dances and folk airs that were sometimes cheery, sometimes melancholy.
Leah Koren, who taught history and civics, had been teaching at the Embassy School for 3 years. She was attractive, medium tall, slender, with brown hair that reached her shoulders, light brown eyes, and a triangular face. Like all the female teachers, she wore a long blue A line dress, low modest heels, and a cross around her neck. Foreign students were always treated modestly, though like most Edomites she had a minimal modesty taboo. She was also one of those teachers to whom girls brought their problems; she was upbeat and always willing to listen to the latest bad boyfriend story. Educated in Adiron during her teaching school years, she had what were often called ‘modern ideas’ but had been licensed by the church because of a need to meet general international standards. She was sad lately though; her husband had been fatally injured in Hostillia and she was a widow. In fact her leave of absence had been about to begin when this emergency happened. The school had been discreet though; only students who were good at spying knew anything. She walked nearby the students including the twins, giving comforting smiles and making sure no one was too nervous. Seeing one of the sentries outside, the teacher felt a moment of sorrow and her smile faltered. Then she cleared her throat. “Everyone stay away from the widows” she said in a clear voice.
No sooner had she spoken than the fire alarm went off. Her olive tanned features went pale. “Alright everyone,” she said, clapping her hands. “Please form a line and move in an orderly manner towards the assembly area.”
A number of the other students began to look alarmed, and the dark haired boy lowered his clarinet and said, “But...but….what if they’re just trying to lure us outside, to kill us there?”
Mrs. Koren said, looking suddenly worried even more, “We have no idea what is happening, but if there is a fire we must at least move towards a fire exist…”
“Madame,” said the sentry, in black tactical gear with a carbine, approaching, “Please do so but do not exit the building until we have determined what is going on. Kids, do as your teacher says!”
