Hail Emperor Ciphra!

The humble crown of our New Emperor

Senatorial Prefect and an original founder of the Empire, Rex Ciphra, has ascended to the highest office in the Empire. On January the 20th, in full attendance by the Triumvirate, the Praetorian Prefect, the Revelators of the Most High, the citizenry of the Empire, and the general public, Rex Ciphra was crowned as Rex Ciphra Pertinax, Augustus of Mare Nostrum. The occasion was marked with speeches from government figures, kind remarks from citizens and diplomatic friends, and with general revelry.

Rex is one of the original founders of Mare Nostrum. In his time here, he has served as Senatorial Prefect, a Revelator of the Most High Gods, and as an active soldier in the Marian Legions, along with immense contributions to our community socially. His ascension to the Imperial Office follows the departure of Paulus Gaius. Rex Ciphra will serve as the third Emperor of Mare Nostrum. His position as Senatorial Prefect is succeeded by Lord Eros Anphedite.

Legatus Developments

Sigil of the First Class Urban Cohort

January was a rather busy month for the Marian Legions. The highlight of our month was our participation in the successful campaign of Politics Amino. In an operation headed by the Osiran Sekhmet Legion, the Marian Legion were a part of the update and occupying force. In recognition of the campaign, the Legion has released the Politics Amino Campaign Ribbon to all troops who participated. January also saw the Marian Legions participate as a piling force in St Abbadon, and in the attempted occupation of Grand Central. During this time period, the Marian legions participated in regular tag raiding and training operations.

In other parts of the Legatus, January saw the launch of the Urban Cohort program. The Urban Cohort is a domestic World Assembly Development Initiative seeking to recognize and reward those members of the region who have successfully joined the World Assembly and have endorsed the regional delegate. The Urban Cohort is divided into classes, recognizing those who have just joined the World Assembly and further recognizing those who have endorsed the regional delegate. The program is expected to continue in the following months, in order to continually reward and build the regional World Assembly base.

Political Planning

The signs on the road to the future are too complex for me

Not a month can go by in the Empire of Mare Nostrum without political intrigue dominating the news scene. The culmination of February saw both Tribunal and Delegate elections. The Tribunal election was a relatively calm affair, where Prefect Sarah ran unopposed and coasted to another term. However, the Delegate election was a fierce competition between three candidates. In the end, Lucius came out on top by a single vote and clinched the position for himself. The in-game transition followed quickly and he was officially delegate of the region within a week. Turning to the Senate, where elections occur at the end of March, another competitive race occurred. While six candidates successfully secured their seats, the last two are currently in a runoff race, both hoping to secure the final seat and to serve in the fifth Imperial Senate of Mare Nostrum.

Election shenanigans were not the only political events to occur in the last two months. At the beginning of March, former Senatorial Prefect Lord Eros Anphedite resigned from his post as Prefect and as a Senator; this forced the Senate into a scramble in order to replace him. Drinarius rose the occasion and served as Senatorial Prefect for the rest of the term and is expected to be reconfirmed as Prefect, while Ham gracefully accepted an appointment to serve the remainder of Anphedite’s term in the Senate. The Tribunal has seen its own fair share of scrambles, as Ham stepped down from the Naturalization Tribunate in early February and had to be quickly replaced, with Chelle23 taking the position. Furthermore, following the departure of Lord Anphedite, Shapirius dutifully rose to serve as the People's Tribune and filled the integral position. Finally, the ending days of March saw the Tribunate of Culture split; the newly created Tribunate of Role-Play being tasked with the creation and maintenance of forum RPs while the Tribunate of Culture will be more focused on activities, events, and other important regional hallmarks.

Contests in Context

The only award I got

If there’s one thing Marian’s like, it’s contests. Each month the Tribunal Prefecture has sought to hold a contest among the general citizens. In January we held a poetry contest which was won by Germanicus, with a poem lamenting the complexity of life. In February we held an art contest which was won by Khosrow. with a beautiful photographic submission. And in March we held a short story contest where a highly contested victory was clinched by Emperor Rex. His humorous take on the Birth of Christ successfully beat not one, but two contestants by a single vote.

• The Marian Legions spent February and March working under the umbrella of ANTIFA with operations in: DankMemes, Alliance of Absolute Monarchs, and The Red States.

Feriae Latinae
Please join The Empire of Mare Nostrum in the celebration of Feriae Latinae.

Where: The festival will be held on a Special Discord Server.
When: It will run from April 12th through April 14th.
Who: Anyone, Marian or Foreigner is welcome to attend*.

What
The Feriae Latinae (The Latin Festival in English) is an ancient Roman festival that was traditionally held in April. It was a celebration of the people and unity that created the Rome that we know. In Mare Nostrum it will be no different. Join us this week-end for a series of games, competitions, and festivities.

The House System
Participants in the festival will be sorted into houses named after the Roman Gods and Goddesses. Throughout the festival there will be opportunities to win points for your house by participating in competitions and by answering trivia, the winning house will be determined on the last day of the festival.

Planned Activities
We'll have a ton of trivia, games, and a movie night to culminate the event. We'll also periodically hold VCs and other mini-events to keep the Festival lively. This will be a cultural affair and will avoid the trappings of NS politics, so no boring lectures to worry about. We hope to see you there!

*We reserve the right to remove anyone whose presence would be deemed disruptive.

First off, I want to thank every single person who participated in this Festival! This was an absolute amazing affair and was an incredibly fun week-end. We've had dozens of games, hours of VCs, and in the end hundreds of points were earned by everyone participating. But, in the nature of competition. We must have a winner!

It was an incredibly tight race. House Vesta went to bed a few days ago, but Jupiter and Mars have been duking it out for a while. However, in the end it was Minerva that gave Mars their biggest challenge. By just three points. The winning house!

I want to thank all those who participated in the festival this year! I would like to give a special shoutout for those that stepped up and provided your artistic talents for the different competitions. Although we had a couple rough patches throughout the festival, I believe that it turned out quite well! Hopefully next time I will be better able to participate throughout. EMN has come a long way from its birth 8 months ago, and I believe this festival has helped us strengthen our bonds with our friends and helped us make new friends as well! I hope everyone was able to have as great of a time as I did. I’m excited for the next festival and the rest of the EMN future! Rex out.

While Vesta house was a bit sleepy for trivia and games, we really gave our all for the contests. I am extremely proud of the work they submitted! It's so exciting to see all that talent, I love it! We were the underdog house, unfortunately. Real life kicked Vesta's but at a terrible time. But that's fits into Vesta! The goddess of hearth, home, and family. We win in different ways <3

I want to give a special thanks to Salvarity. He really picked up the dropped ball on this and made the festival what it was. He absolutely shined and he deserves so much respect for that. I think we get lost in teasing and giving each other crap, we forget to give appreciation sometimes. I honestly am proud of everything he accomplished here, and I really thank him for his willingness to step up and get it done.

This being EMN's first festival, I think it went extremely well! It was such a great time to get everyone together, from inside and outside our region. It was a lovely time and super intense! Intense in a good, friendly competition sort of way! I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish!

Change in the Management

The face of our old/new management...

A lot has changed in the Empire since the last General Update. Some old people left, some veterans returned, and some even had the opportunity to leave and then come back! The Tribunal Prefecture was not spared from the changes and was reorganized under Drinarius, who became the Tribunal Prefect after defeating Eros in the May elections. As you may have already noticed, the Empire's executive now has two new departments: Regional and Public Affairs. The former deals with maintaining on-site activity, the latter with that which happens off-site.

The government saw an increase in activity near the end of June, most notably Public Affairs started organizing weekly VC with the members of the Discord. Despite that, Drinarius did not stand for re-election, leaving Sarah an open path to victory. She will thus be returning to her old office and to the political life of the Empire as the new Tribunal Prefect. Her extensive platform focused on, among other things, improving the way EMN handles on-site polls, developing the national RP, and reintroducing our monthly regional newspaper, the Vox Imperii.

New Imperial roleplay

Map of our proud Empire! Looks vaguely familiar, but I just can't put a finger on it.

Our Empire has a new RP, authored by Lucius! In the Imperial RP (what else could it be) our citizens get to play as either loyal* regional governors, ruling in the name of the Emperor of Mare Nostrum... or independent chiefs of savage barbarian tribes ruling in their own name. To repeat the comments of our Tribune of RP, one of those options sounds clearly better than the other. Our citizenry has shown excitement in this new RP and a substantial group of players has already formed. It will be the focus of our new government to capitalize on this and keep up the momentum.

Is it the time for the Sixth Senate already?

Oh goodness, look at the time! Our Senate is that old already.

The June Senate elections provided surprising results - Lord Eros Anphedite, the leader of the Populares party, failed to be re-elected as a Senator. The Populares initially ran on a platform that focused on bringing new legislation to the Senate, most notably their controversial project of the Bill of Rights. Meanwhile, their rivals (Optimates) argued that the Imperial Senate should instead work on fixing any loopholes that may have arisen in the (now quite extensive) legal system. It looks like the Optimates have prevailed in this struggle.

Following the short (but occasionally heated) discussion, Valt was elected Senatorial Prefect for the new (6th) Session of the Imperial Senate. The Senate almost immediately amended its Standing Orders, to establish the upkeep of our library of legislation as the responsibility of the freshly chosen Prefect.

It is no secret that the departure of Thomas Insaniac (better known as Salvarity) from the game caused setbacks in the Legatus Prefecture (our foreign affairs department).
