Anywhere Else But Here wrote:You know, people always complain about them, but I can't recall running into any serious bugs in Skyrim. The odd place where the AI struggled with pathing, and the occasional loading screen freeze (though those could have been down to mods). The only thing I ran into with any frequency was a purely visual glitch where the effects of spells (and flames in the world and such) would stop appearing. For such a big game, Skyrim is pretty impressive.

Well, it does have bugs, but the "lol buggy bethesda" meme needs to die at some point. I've played (almost) vanilla Skyrim since 2012 and only encountered once a lasting, problematic bug (the dragon falling from the sky) and it didn't even do nasty stuff like corrupting my saves and all. And on TW3 (da best RPG of all times, according to the internet) I've already encountered two game-breaking bugs in one single playthrough. Anecdotal evidence is irrelevant, I know, but Skyrim isn't that bug-ridden. It has bugs, yes, and Bethesda could solve them but doesn't because they're lazy, but Bethesda games are a far cry from what the meme makes them to be.

You acknowledge that anecdotal evidence is hardly proof anything, but proceed to make a point that relies on just that. Lel.

I agree that Bethesda gets maybe too much criticism relative to other companies, but the criticisms are fundamentally fair. Their games are super buggy, and I've encountered plenty of quest breaking bugs in Skyrim.

You can tell something is up when the Elder Scrolls Wiki consistently maintains a comprehensive list of bugs for anything gameplay related and even suggests strategies for getting around the really bad ones.

Fair enough, but I feel like the "bugthesda" meme is akin to the "dangerous australia" meme at this point. Is australia housing dangerous species that may or may not harm you ? Yes. Is it the most dangerous country in the world where all lifeforms are out to kill you ? No. The same goes for Bethesga. Their games are indeed buggy, but they're not that buggy compared to other open-world games. The facts that Bethesda stubbornly refuses to upgrade their engine and still hasn't solved its massive performance issues, or don't know how to properly write questsn for example, seems more concerning to me than the bugs.

Agreed. I think honestly the only real major bug I encountered in a Bethsoft game was in Oblivion, and it wasn’t that bad, just terrifying. I went to Water’s Edge after the Fighter’s Guild quest where the occupants are massacred, and instead of despawning, they were all floating in the air, T-posing, and then they slowly floated away, through the terrain. It was very, very horrifying for 12 year old me.

Now that's bugs turned art.

Honestly I'm eagerly waiting a cosmic-horror-themed RPG where bugs are in fact part of the gameplay.

Worst bugs ive experienced in a bethesda game was in Skyrim where not that long after the game came out i was unable to continue the companions quest line after the silver hand attack on jorvik(or whatever their longhouse was called) and it was just stuck there with the wounded companions and kodlaks naked body on the ground inside. Got fixed after a few months iirc

The other was that Markarth one i mentioned a good bit ago where all the guards kept trying to arrest me for the forsworn conspiracy after i did the quest, and it usually ended up with me fighting basically the whole city which was a huge pain in the ass, even if i agreed to go to prison, slept then left they would still try to arrest me for it. So i had to avoid talking to any guard for ages before that one was fixed. I ended up just ignoring the city for a while as some times they would immediately attack iirc before even trying to arrest me.

Other than that ive not much memory of a lot of major bugs, its usually just smaller ones like animation glitches, ragdoll bugs etc occasionally getting stuck somewhere as well.

I really think Bethesda has the worst testers in the industry. They rushed out the game without fixing bugs.

I recently got a bug where I could not become Thane of Riften as the dialogue for it would not come up.

No, I thought ESO was referring to Oblivion
