What does YN's accent sound like?

Postby Hatterleigh » Sun Jan 27, 2019 8:14 pm

So, say that if your nation speaks english or a variant of english, OR if a citizen from your nation was to speak english even if it's not the native language, what would the accent sound like? Describe it in terms people can understand too

Hatterleigh is a fairly large country, so it has a few different accents, but i'd describe it as sounding between south african, australian, and north american. Sometimes it sounds a bit germanic.

When W1LLAN1ANs speak English it sounds like British English but with a hint of Icelandic and Swedish. W1LLAN1ANs don't often speak English because they have their own language, which is W1LLAN1AN.

The issue with questions like this is that no nation has a single universal accent spoken by everyone.

That being said, when it comes to the English language in Gandoor, the Standard Gandoorese Pronunciation is, as the name implies, considered the standard and neutral English accent as used. Pronunciations using Standard Gandoorese are what is taught in schools and most nationally broadcast news programming require anchors to speak using Standard Gandoorese as opposed to their natural accent.

The Standard Gandoorese Pronunciation sounds most similar (and in some cases is nearly indistinguishable from) the General American and Standard Canadian accents. One notable aspect of Standard Gandoorese is the fact that any loanwords from Japanese (and there are a lot, many of which are not used in other English dialects, especially considering that Japanese is one of our official language) are pronounced based upon the Japanese phonology as opposed to having their pronunciations Anglicised.

That's true, but when you're from country A, country B's accents sort of jumble together and are easy to group together

Well a common Hystarian has some English presence in their life with it being a major part of our History.
But it is known that we have a very cold and strait forward talk while some words escape our speech.
An English Hystarian accent is also known to have breathless talk and a refusal to use the nose to speak.

The standard accent taught for English in schools sounds vaguely Australian, but this is not the country's natural accent. In rural areas, where English is less practiced, the fact that Ashkerron is pronounced using Japanese-like vowel sounds influences the accent more strongly, although the standard syllabary has syllables that end in -SH and -L, and distinguishes between L and R. This makes the overall sound different. Some have described it as sounding like a cross between Japanese and Singaporean accent.

This is a matter which distinguishes rural and city dwellers. Among the opposition parties, who are largely cosmopolitan and 'internationalist', seeking for greater integration between Ashkera and 'the global community,' the rural accent is considered worthy of mockery.

The actual ruling class, the highly-educated employees of the technocratic state and its associated organizations, would never be caught speaking in a rural accent, but would also never publicly chide a rural member of society for speaking with a rural accent. Their attitude might be read more akin to, "Yes, yes, very authentic. Nod politely, then shoo him back to his farm so we can get on with designing this new hydro plant."

Toraians can't make the /th/ sound; it comes out as /d/ or /t/ instead. They can't make the /w/ sound either and it sounds like "oo-ah" when they try. Also, they don't use article words because no such words exist in their native language. They tend to use their chest voice when speaking, so it comes out "rumbling and resonant" as it is often described. Visitors will usually liken the Toraian accent to a Russian or German one.

It depends on which section of the Empire that the English is from. In the European territories, one can hear various British, Germanic, and Greek accents. Eireannian Americans speak in a strange combination of a Southern U.S. dialect combined with an English accent. In South Africa, they obviously speak in a South African accent that sometimes sounds more Australian. This is due to the lack of prior Dutch colonisation and having a few Dutch and German refugees resettled there in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Australia, speakers have an Australian accent that is closer to the original English accent. This is because Australia was not used as a penal colony in my canon and was therefore not as heavily influenced by Irish. The planetary colonies have a strange mix of Swedish and English accents.Throughout the rest of the Imperial realm, one can hear tons of local dialects of English.

Depends on where you're from in the Empire. The prevailing ones tend to be a sort of pseudo-Parisian due to the influences of the Kingdom of Amber, the Empire's "equivalent" of France, as well as a pseudo-Cantonese due to Lian's influence; and of course there's the Romano-Neapolitan Italian of the Alisonians. To say nothing of the dozens of others, the Empire is after all a confederacy of more than a dozen nations and even more tribes.

Great Nortend has very many varied accents of English and Broad Nortish, the term used to refer to dialectal non-standard variants of English. The standard form of English, General Erbonian English, is taught within the upper classes with a pronunciation known as Common Nortish. This form has non-nasal vowels, is non-rhotic, subtly trilled and does not exhibit excessive yod-coalescence. The consonant cluster 'wr' is also not usually reduced to a mere 'r', and thus in words such as 'write' or 'wrap', the 'w' is pronounced. Neither is the 'g' in 'gn' or the 'h' in 'wh', the latter of which is pronounced 'hw'. The cluster 'ing' is pronounced 'en' in the case of present participles, such as 'hunting', and 'ing' in the case of the gerund. The final 'n' in words such as 'autumn', 'solemn' and 'damn' is not usually pronounced, except sometimes before a vowel, as in the case of 'autumn as' which is pronounced 'autum nas'. CM does not feature the wine/whine or cot/caught mergers; however, the lot/cloth split is evident in some words, most notably in 'off', 'cross', 'cloth', 'gone', 'wash' and 'soft', as well as the trap/bath split.

This accent can be heard in the following clips: https://instaud.io/3eRD and https://instaud.io/3eRE. The words spoken are:

• Bath
• Trap
• Wrap
• Rap
• Gnome
• Gnat

Nikopol is huge, and there are very many different accents when speaking Ostspeak, and these translate to just as many accents when speaking English. This is because English is a dead language much like Latin was in the 21st century, and because Ostspeak is a Germanic language rooted in English (ultimately Ostspeak is just one dialect continuum of 55th century English) when speaking English people generally just speak it as if they were speaking Ostspeak.

The most common English language accent is therefore the most common Ostspeak accent, which is the Capital Accent - the Nikopolian equivalent of RP. It would sound fairly strange to a modern English speaker as it is an almost musical rendition of haphazard enunciation and hard consonants (from pronouncing it like Ostspeak) and the best way to describe it in 21st century terms is that it sounds like a Finnish person speaking Dutch on a holiday in Chile.

There is a variation in accents that exist throughout Yeremania. The Monterionian accent is nearly indistinguishable from the General North American accent. However the accents in the easternmost part (Eastern Yeremania) of the nation are opposite from those in the westernmost part (Arcadia). In Arcadia, every vowel in words are said more openly, and the vowels and diphthongs are strongly pronounced, and the adjacent consonants are weak in sound, in some cases voiceless. In Eastern Yeremania, it’s nearly the complete opposite. The vowels and diphthongs are more muted but the adjacent consonants are more dominant in the sound of the word.

Examples:

The word talk.

A Arcadian Native says talk as if it’s spelled tauk (rhyming with caught). In some cases it even sounds like tock.

A Eastern Yeremanian Native says talk as if it’s spelled tulk (sounding like bulk in a General NA accent) or sometimes even tolk.

A Monterionian says the word in a general N.A way, which is in between, where the al are evenly pronounced, as for most words.

The word own

Arcadia: oan (stronger o as in go sound)

Eastern Yeremania: oon ( oo as in moon sound)

The word merry

Arcadia: Marry (stronger a sound as in flat)

Eastern Yeremania: Murry

The word barrow

Arcadia: barrow (just like Monterionian and General N.A accent except a stronger a sound in some cases)

Eastern Yeremania: borrow, or in some cases even burrow.

The word also

Arcadia: auso

Eastern Yeremania: ulso

Another distinct difference between the two is that Eastern Yeremanians sometimes carry an r sound between words when saying something. So how they say “I saw it yesterday.” sounds something like “I sorit yesterday.” Arcadians say it like “I sau-it yesterday”, which is similar to the Monterionian accent, except the w sound is silent. Voiceless consonants are common in the Arcadian accent though not present in all cases. So in general, the Eastern Yeremanian accent sounds darker, more fluid, while the Arcadian accent sounds brighter, more open and dry. There are other state based accents that have a strong Scottish/Irish/French influence. The accent of Maple Creek sounds very soft, and stringy. The Survian accent is heavily Irish and German influenced. In Yeremania, people can easily tell which state someone is from based on their accent.

Now the French speaking Yeremanians speak a lot like French people, there isn’t much of a difference between Yeremanian French and Native French, though it’s still distinguishable, as Yeremanian French sounds less sharp. English speakers in New France have a French influenced dialect, and an accent that is a cross between Eastern Ontarian and South England accents.

In the Territories of Yeremania, dialects and accents are highly influenced by indigenous languages, due to the fact most of the population there are of indigenous descent. The remaining effects from the indigenous languages carries on into their accents.

The Thermodolian English accent is varied. Most Thermodolians who live in cities and speak English fluently speak it with an general American/Australian accent. While the more rural Thermodolians and those who don’t speak English well tend to have an almost Russian accent. Thermodolian English speaking broadcasters speak with an almost British accent

Most Eskaaians, when speaking English, have a vaguely western European accent. The letter "C" is not commonly used in Eskaai, so "C" may sound more like a "Khuh" sound. The letter "X" is not in the Eskaai alphabet, hence Eskaaians pronounce it as a "Zh" or "Huh" sound. The "Hard D" sound is used for nearly all words in English starting or ending with "D". "R" is a guttural sound: take the word "Rota", the word would be pronounced "Rh-oo-ta". Words with "Th" in them are pronounced "Tuh", so "Theatre" is pronounced "Tee-a-ter".
