Margrave Wladyslaw III of Masowia announces state visit to Jamesburg
Image
Left: Margrave Wladyslaw III; Right: Flag of the Margraviate of Masowia

A part of the announcements made by Margrave Wladyslaw III in his monthly appearance to the Masowian Diet (Masowian: Sejm) is that he plans to visit Jamesburg later this year, likely around May, to improve the “already good relations” of the two nations.

The Margraviate of Masowia (Teutonian: Markgrafschaft Masowien; Masowian: Margrabstwo Mazowieckie) is a landlocked nation, sandwiched between the much larger nations of Teutonia, Habsburg, and Muscovia, the latter two it considers threats. It was a marcher lord within the Holy Germanian Empire from 1071, and later on an ally of Teutonia when it pushed to dissolve the HGE in the brutal Two Decade War back in 1664. Today, it is a member of the Avalon Concordat, and as a result, maintains a good relationship with the Kingdom of Achsony.

Wladyslaw III is the son of the late Margrave Kazimierz V, who fought alongside King James against the Italic Empire more than 50 years ago. Wladyslaw, then an 8-year-old boy, was “quite fond” of the “equally childish” king. He also was a good friend of the late King Sigismund, seeing him as an “older brother”. Wladyslaw last visited Jamesburg 6 years ago, in 1813, for the coronation of Queen Freyja II. He also visited Jamesburg earlier the same year for King Sigismund’s funeral.

Wladyslaw already made arrangements with the Achson ambassador, Ulrich Müller, before he made the announcement. Ulrich telephoned the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which then passed on the message to both the Prime Minister and the Queen. Her Majesty was reportedly “delighted” with the visit, though the Prime Minister not as much. Nevertheless, the Achson embassy was phoned back with a reply gladly accepting the Margrave’s visit.

It is still unannounced what mode of transport the Margrave will take, although speculation suggests either a passenger aeroplane or the newly completed Trans-Evropian Rail (TER) which ends at Warschau and makes a stop at Jamesburg Central Station. Either way, the visit is scheduled for May this year, should there be no unforeseen events delaying it.

Deputy PM Frederick Butcher dies, murderer still not found

Doctors at the Goddess Eir Medical Hospital stated earlier today that Frederick George Butcher, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Achsony, has passed away after 6 days of struggling for his life in the intensive treatment unit (ITU) of the hospital.

Frederick Butcher was allegedly shot by Johann Otto von Pfalz, a member of the Hall of Lords and a “close friend” of Butcher’s, in his home office on the 19th of January. The bullet was lodged into his neck, puncturing his left carotid artery and barely missing his throat. He lost a massive amount of blood, and was already unconscious, although still breathing, when found.

He was rushed to Goddess Eir Medical Hospital, where he was placed in the ITU and given a blood transfusion. The bullet was extracted and the wound patched up with healing magic. Despite all efforts, his odds of survival were, at best, minimal. His brain lacked the blood it needed to function, and the amount of blood that was lost was too great. After 5 days, he was declared brain dead. His family decided to stop his life support today after the doctors told them there was no chance of recovery. He died aged 51.

The Jamesburg Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating the incident. According to their most recent report, Johann von Pfalz visited Butcher at his home on the morning of the 19th. The two spoke privately at his office until a gunshot was heard by one of the maids. When the maid went to investigate, von Pfalz was gone and Butcher was sitting on his desk chair and bleeding to death.

“I haven’t seen the two fight recently. Actually, they never really fought at all.” Says Johann’s wife, Margarete von Pfalz. “They were the closest of friends. I can’t believe Johann would do this.” She further adds. “Herr von Pfalz came in with a grin asking for Frederick, as he usually does.” Says one of Butcher’s housemaids, Bertha Wagner. “I heard a bang from his study. When I went in, Herr von Pfalz was gone. I don’t know how he could have escaped, there were no entrances except the door and windows.”

If you have relevant information regarding the location and/or destination of Johann Otto von Pfalz, please report it to the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Jamesburg MetroPol at (+10) 1002 1043.

“Mobile telephone” prototype demonstrated and patented by inventor Aleksandr Belov
Image
Left: A “mobile telephone” ; Right: Aleksandr Georgy Belov

The Royal Patent Office (RPO) in Barrow Ward, Jamesburg is one of the less busy government offices in Achsony. However, it is one of the more important ones, as it is responsible for giving patents to some of the most influential inventions in both Achson and World History.

Aleksandr Georgy Belov is a known inventor and entrepreneur. Coming from a small hamlet in the Tsardom of Muscovia, he and his family of failed merchants migrated to Jamesburg hoping for a better life. Despite his relatively lowly upbringing, he was granted a scholarship, and was able to study in the Jamesburg Academy of Science, specialising in communications technology. He is known for pioneering the first Magic-Assisted Telephone (MAT), which earned him his fortune. He is the owner and chairman of the Belov Telephone Company, the fourth largest telephone service provider in Achsony.

Mister Belov phoned the Office of the Head Registrar of the RPO the other night asking for an appointment, stating he made a “breakthrough”. The registrar, Karl von Ritterstein, was none too pleased that Belov was coming for the fifth time with another so-called “breakthrough”, the first four of which were more “broken” than “breakthroughs”. Nevertheless, he made time for him yesterday.

Belov brought a small, wooden case containing a pair of his “mobile telephones”. Present in the Registrar’s Office were Belov, von Ritterstein, an assistant of the registrar, and a photographer. Switching both on, he handed a unit to the registrar’s assistant and proceeded to go to the next room. After nearly a minute, the telephone the assistant was holding rang. Following Belov’s instruction, he pressed a button, and the words “You are a fool, Karl.” in Belov’s voice came through. Belov and von Ritterstein chatted for a few minutes before Belov hung up and returned.

The “mobile telephone” uses radio waves, similar to the radios used for both entertainment and communication, transmitted and received through the antenna sticking from the top of the device. Like a telephone handset, of which it is designed to be of similar usage, it has a microphone and an earpiece. It is powered by a battery, which can last for 45 minutes of straight use before having to be charged through an electric port or with electric magic, though the latter method is not recommended.

Belov was granted the patent, set to give him exclusive rights to the device for 15 years. He returned to his office, phoning the newsmen of Jamesburg, including the Jamesburg Telegram. Earlier today, he proudly showed off the invention and patent to the press, telling the story of its demonstration along with explaining how it works.

Hopes are high among the Belov Telephone Co, along with the public, that this will improve communication between people, eliminating the need for having to stay within reach of a telephone’s cord.

Federal Police Leader Kaitz Fähnrich
"Office for The Federal Police", 14 Royal City, Greater Polish Sector, The Black Party
Greetings, Government of the Achsony Kingdom, or whom it may concern,

I am writing this letter under great distress that the perpetrator behind the ruthless murder of former Prime Minister Frederick Butcher has not been seized and detained, and for all that is known, is still at large.

Frankly, there is no doubt that the only rationale behind Otto von Pfalz still being a freeman walking, is simply the appalling state of The Jamesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and the sub-par constables they employ.

Officers of The Black Party's Capital City Police, or as the international might know them, The Federal Police, have taken akin to the mysterious disappearance of von Pfalz, and have infact uncovered the possibility that von Pfalz's disappearance wasn't conducted by his own, but possibly with government backing.

As such, the Federal Police of The Black Party is more then willing to cooperate with the sub-par Jamesburg Metropolitan Police. Albeit, there won't be much contest onto who will be the key department in solving the case, if such cooperation was to occur.

I personally hope that the Aschony Kingdom heeds our contribution, not only for the safety of Jamesburg, but for justice at the Reichstag.

Formal Regards,
K. F~ , Federal Police, The Black Party

Wanted murderer Johann von Pfalz kills 9 officers, 1 civilian in fight in Grinsbury
Image
Left: The corpse of Richard Matthews; Right: Portrait of Johann von Pfalz

Johann Otto von Pfalz, wanted for the murder of Deputy Prime Minister Frederick Butcher, was recently seen and encountered in Grinsbury, a city west of the Jamesburg Metropolitan Area.

As the National Police Agency released Johann’s wanted posters all over Achsony, a civilian named Richard Matthews, a clerk at a nearby store having a leisurely lunch stroll in the central square of Grinsbury yesterday, saw a man resembling the figure in the poster. After reporting it to two nearby constables, they apprehended Johann, who then brutally killed the three in front of a horrified public.

Other constables quickly rushed to the scene, some attempting to control a stampeding crowd trying to flee while the others apprehended the criminal. As the public reached a safe distance, the police officers drew their pistols and a fierce battle ensued.

A debriefing of the surviving constables suggests that Johann was armed with a pistol, although mostly used an unknown form of magic, capable of slicing through flesh and bone, explaining why most of the dead officers had massive cuts akin to ones from sword slashes. The officers landed shots on his head and torso, but he kept fighting as if he was unscathed. He then apparently “vanished mid-air” afterward. Onlookers also said similar accounts. “He was unlike any mortal.” Says Christine Lee. “He soaked up bullets like they were nothing as he killed with an indifferent but disturbing expression on his face.”

Johann was able to kill 7 police officers, wounding 11 more before going missing. The Grinsbury Police Headquarters requested support from a Royal Achson Army garrison in Rothsay Barracks, around 18 kilometres from the city, to search for Johann, now considered “extremely dangerous”. Soldiers and constables alike had orders to “shoot on sight”, and armed checkpoints were placed around every major road entering Grinsbury, along with the surrounding area.

As of now, the checkpoints have mostly been lifted. Both the Police and the Army are still on the lookout as to where he might be. Civilians are advised to stay away from Johann if ever found nearby and phone the authorities immediately.

Split atoms likely responsible for destruction of Roma 57 years ago, say scientists
Image
An Eternal City No More, painting by Augustus Westdale depicting the destruction of Roma; painted 1788

The destruction of Roma, capital of the Third Italic Empire, during the One-Year War 57 years ago was an event embedded in the realm of history, yet its cause is shrouded in ambiguity. It was an almost apocalyptic event brought about by a “thermonuclear bomb” a mysterious weapon from an equally mysterious world, Earth.

It was a weapon used by the Goddess Freyja to level the city, thus ending the war and leading to the collapse of the Empire. It annihilated everything standing, leaving only a large crater and a cryptic curse preventing anything from living in the area.

All knowledge we have about the weapon comes from the accounts of King James, himself a resident of Earth. He described the weapon as an “instrument of pure destruction”, capable of “causing death even after its wrath subsides”. He never described how such a device was able to bring about such destruction, saying “that knowledge is best left unknown until this world is responsible enough”.

However, scientists at the University of Emden in Jamesburg say it might be caused by a burst of energy brought about by the splitting of atomic particles. Doctor Emile Toussaint de Bourgogne, a physicist from the University, theorises that atoms release energy when split. The larger the atom, the more energy it could release. If an uncontrolled chain reaction of split atoms were to occur, the energy could potentially destroy anything in its vicinity.

While it is practically impossible to test this hypothesis with the technology of our world, many scientists are still debating whether or not this is indeed plausible. It also cannot explain the looming curse around the area, causing harm to any form of life to approach it. However, it provides an interesting insight as to what may have caused such an amount of damage, if what both our Goddess and former King have said were indeed true.

Moscovian military aeroplane crashes in Sevenburghs, Habsburg; tensions rise once again

Tensions between the two great powers of Moscovia and Habsburg escalate once again after a Nikolayev N-2 scout biplane of the Moscovian Army Air Service (MAAS) crashed over the region of Sevenburghs the other day, close to the Moscovian-Habsburger border.

The plane was piloted by Junior Lieutenant Sergei Mikhailovich Vasiliev, who was killed because his parachute failed to open. It crashed near the small town of Királyháza in the Karpaten Mountains, just a few kilometres from the border.

When Habsburger soldiers went to investigate, they saw blurry overhead photographs of Habsburger Army border garrisons and troop columns, along with a map of the area with markings denoting where these photographs were taken. The aeroplane’s rotor engine had traces of blood and feathers, implying that it collided with a flock of birds while in flight.

Yesterday, the Inspector General of the Habsburger Army, Field Marshal Heinrich Josef von Hötzendorf, accused the Moscovians of spying in a press conference in the capital city of Wean, further noting that the “bloody bastards are ready to attack at a moment’s notice”. The marshal also ordered reinforcements for the border troops, along with the construction of rudimentary fortifications like trenches and barbed wire.

Just today, the Moscovian Premier, Konstantin Golitsyn, released a statement denying any sort of “pre-invasion reconnaissance”. According to him, the aeroplane was in the middle of a “routine training flight” before losing contact with ground control. He assures the Habsburgers, the “hot-headed marshal” in particular, that “Moscovia intends no conflict with Habsburg, so long as Habsburg feels the same.”

Habsburger and Muscovian ships face off in Pontic Sea; “all-out war may be imminent”
Image
Left: The Habsburger dreadnaught battleship Götterdämmerung; Right: Habsburger soldiers during the Habsburg Conquest of Bosnien

In the otherwise calm waters of the Pontic Sea yesterday, a heated encounter between the Habsurger and Muscovian navies occurred in the midst of ever increasing tension between the two great powers.

At 04:30 AM local time, a detachment consisting of three destroyers and a battlecruiser from the Archducal Habsburger Navy began patrolling the waters around the coast of Walachia in the Pontic Sea, a client state of the Archduchy of Habsburg. The Pontic Sea is shared by 7 nations, including the Tsardom of Muscovia who considers it an essential trade route. At 8:00 AM, the detachment came across the Muscovian battleship Nizhny Novgorod. The Habsburger battlecruiser Erzherzog Franz VI radioed the Nizhny Novgorod in Bayernish, essentially telling it to leave. The Nizhny Novgorod responded in Muscovian, saying it did not understand the message along with telling the Erzherzog Franz VI to leave.

The two ships faced each other, both unyielding. The Erzherzog Franz VI contacted the Walachian naval base in the city of Constanta for reinforcements. The entire Habsburger Ostflotte, including the famed dreadnaught Götterdämmerung, credited for single-handedly sinking 11 Alexandrian ships during the recent Habsburger-Bosnien War, was sent in response. Meanwhile, the Muscovian sent the entire Pontic Sea Fleet to the scene.

By 3:00 PM, each fleet was assembled in front on each other. Sailors on both sides were on their battle stations as the commanders, Admiral Hans von Lemberg and Admiral Vladimir Brezhnev of the Habsburger and Muscovian fleets, respectively, tried to initiate talks.

As of today, the two fleets are still facing each other. Army divisions gather in the Habsburg-Muscovian Border. Retired Persiranian-Achson diplomat, Iskandar Shahzad-Baumann, said “… from the looks of this, an all-out war may be imminent…” in her radio interview last night. Meanwhile, Secretary General Albert von Clausewitz of the Avalon Concordat announces the faction’s “neutrality” to the issue.

But for sure, there is a question in everyone’s minds: who will shoot first?

Great Eight to reduce quota on foreign scholarship grants for this year
Image
Left: The Royal College of Engineering; Right: The University of Jamesburg

It is often considered a great honour to study in one of the prestigious and world-renown Great Eight academic institutions. These centres of learning and excellence are the pride and joy of Achsony’s education system, producing many great thinkers and successful entrepreneurs.

To be able to acquire an education for free is an inherent right of every Achson citizen; however this does not extend to foreign students, who have a multitude of pricey fees to pay if they wish to study in Achsony. However, every year, the Great Eight schools grant a certain number of scholarships to fortunate foreign students, who are often excellent in their own right but lacking in funds, allowing them to study there for free whilst being granted generous stipends, along with educational materials and living quarters.

Each school has a quota on how many foreign scholars they accept; the spacious University of Jamesburg grants the most, numbering 250, while the smaller Koeln Institute of Technology grants only 35. To select only the best of the best, a test is given to willing students from abroad, and only those above a certain score may be considered for a scholarship.

Recently, however, the Great Eight’s Board of Directors decided to reduce the amount of foreign scholarships they would grant for this year. Two of the primary reasons being “to make space for Achson students” and “to put the budget to better use”. Rebecca Miller, Directress of the Dikeburgh Academy of Science, Magic, and the Arts, further stated “Avalon Concordat nations still hold priority for foreign scholarships, and the amount of grants for them will remain the same. Only other countries, especially poorer ones, will be on the bottom of the list.”

Romance Day a little more than a week away; stores begin selling chocolate and flowers

Romance Day, or whatever it may be known as in other cultures, is a holiday celebrated all over the world. Recognised by the Church of Achsony as the Festival of Romance, Love, and the Goddess, it is set at the 14th of February every year.

In this day dedicated to romantic love, couples eat dinner, provide gifts, and generally enjoy each other’s company. Fine-dining restaurants are very often filled with guests who reserve days in advance, so some couples may opt for a home meal. Gifts range from flowers, red roses especially, to jewellery.

In Achsony’s twist to the celebration, women traditionally gift chocolate or other sweets to men, whether he may be a colleague, friend, junior, superior, or loved one; affectionately hand-made chocolate for the person you like and store-bought “obligatory” chocolate for others. Men will then return the favour at the 14th of March, known popularly as White Day.

Stores all over Achsony have started selling Romantic Day goodies for any early shoppers who would like to avoid the rowdy crowds of panic buyers. Discounted goods are available for those wanting to save but still have someone in mind.

Habsburg and Muscovia attempt to reconcile, Evropia breathes a temporary sigh of relief
Image
Left: Muscovian soldiers in the border with Habsburg; Right: Iosif III of the House of Stalinovich, Tsar of Muscovia

After weeks of rapidly escalating tension, the great powers of Habsburg and Muscovia agree to settle their differences in a meeting rather than in the battlefield.

Yesterday, Muscovian Tsar Iosif III made a decision to contact the Habsburg embassy, offering to conduct bilateral talks to hopefully reach an agreement instead of fight in another war. This comes to the surprise of the Muscovian Privy Council, saying that this was a “rash decision” by the Tsar, conducted without “consulting” them first.

Nevertheless, the Habsburger Foreign Office, after gaining approval from Archduke Ferdinand II, agreed to a discussion. The talks are to be held in the city of Lemberg, part of the territory with the same name disputed between the two countries, currently held by the Archduchy of Habsburg. To represent Muscovia, Foreign Minister Dimitri Malashenko. As for Habsburg, Crown Prince Franz Ludwig, eldest son and heir of Ferdinand II.

Ever since the late 1600s, the two nations have had strained relations. They have fought against each other in multiple conflicts, the most recent being the War of the Silver Throne in 1767, the aftermath being a humiliating defeat for the Muscovians. Today, both maintain significant military garrisons in their mutual border, along with heavily regulated travel and trade embargoes.

With this gesture, the continent of Evropia has dodged a potentially damaging bullet. Although, we cannot say for certain what the aftermath of these talks may be.

King Massimiliano II of Napoli assassinated by Italic reunificationist
Image
Left: Photograph of King Massimiliano II; Right: The King's funeral in Neapel

Tragedy struck the nation of Napoli yesterday as a member of the Italic reunification movement known as Unitas has shot and killed King Massimiliano II.

The perpetrator, a 19-year-old university dropout named Bernardo Mussolini, claims to be a member of Unitas, a militant group seeking to restore the Italic Empire. The group has cells in most former Italic territories, including the Kingdom of Piemont, Kingdom of Paella, and the Republic of Latium, among others.

Meanwhile, King Massimiliano II is a staunch anti-reunificationist. His father, Massimiliano di Milano, was a Magister Militum in the Italic army until being convicted of treason by fellow official, Antonio Vedicci. He was stripped of his titles, wealth, and publicly shamed before he and his family were forced into exile. This caused the young Massimiliano II to scorn the Italic Empire. Massimiliano the elder later redeemed himself during the One-Year War by supporting King James and the Achson Army, who later put him in power over the restored Kingdom of Napoli, crowning him Massimiliano I.

Yesterday, the King held a parade through the capital city, Neapel. A warm and jubilant populace greeted the popular king. Bernardo Mussolini, who was said to have planned this for months, used the crowd as cover to get close and draw his pistol to the exposed King. He was arrested by the Napolish police moments after he made the shot.

A state funeral for the king was held today, headed by the new Napolish monarch, Queen Alessandra, the 18-year-old heiress of Massimiliano II. As for Mussolini, he is to stand trial a week from now. Because Napoli recently abolished capital punishment, Mussolini will likely be given a life sentence.

Achson National Football Team starts trial games for EFL’s 28th Biannual Tournament this year
Image
Achsony playing against Baguet in the IFA 1818 World Cup Semi-finals

The Evropian Football League’s 28th Biannual Tournament is coming. As announced last year, it is set for the month of November in the city of Bärlin, capital of Teutonia, marking the third time the city hosed the tournament.

Football fans all over Evropia are excited for the tournament. Just last year, the IFA 1818 World Cup saw the Baguet National Football Team as the winners, winning 4-2 against Hinomoto. Now, Baguet will be playing again, so many are excited to see their victory, although many more would prefer witnessing their defeat.

For now, the Achson National Football Team, who was defeated by Baguet in the World Cup semi-finals, is holding training and trial games in the Jamesburg Neostadium. Local fans can watch their favourite players pitted against each other, including the famed Despicable Duo: Roger Northumberland and Hans Erik Ziegler, the latter winning Best Player in the 1818 World Cup.

Will Achsony win its 4th EFL Championship, or will somebody else steal the crown? How will Baguet fare? Will new teams and players rise to glory? We will soon find out.

Theopolis up in flames; thousands homeless as fire ravages Alexandrian capital
Image

The capital of the Holy Alexandrian Realm, the bustling city of Theopolis, home to a little over 1 million people, experienced a great tragedy two days ago. A huge portion of the city was set ablaze, the same fire still raging as of the moment this article is published.

The fire is assumed to have started in a low-class residential district, mostly inhabited by those who work in the city’s manufactories. The city police said it is likely to have been caused by a dropped oil lamp. The fire easily ploughed through the mostly wooden houses, quickly spreading to the surrounding districts.

The city, unlike most other Evropian cities, lacked a government-funded fire brigade, as most fires in the city were put out by private firemen at the cost of the citizenry. As such, any organised response group was slow to assemble.

As the fire grew larger, God-Emperor Konstantinos XII quickly fled the city with his entourage. The phrase “leave the outcasts to the flame”, although likely apocryphal, was embedded into the minds of the city folk. Having their “living god”, already humiliated by the devastating defeat at the hands of the Archduchy of Habsburg, abandon them at their time of need further fuelled his rising unpopularity.

According to the most recent casualty reports, around 712 people have died due to the fire, with 1,113 more wounded. More than 80,000 residents are now homeless, some barely saving any personal possessions. The city’s industrial areas and inner districts are mostly unharmed. The fire has been mostly controlled, although Emperor Konstantinos has not returned as of yet.

Lizard tribe raids increase in frequency as summer peaks; Helheim requests more troops
Image
Left: Achson soldiers combatting a lizard raid; Right: Artist's impression of a lizardman

The Dominion of Helheim is the largest and the second-most populated Achson overseas possession. Being located in the southern hemisphere of the world, it has a rather different seasonal cycle. While it is winter here at home, it is currently midsummer in Helheim.

One would assume midsummer to be a calm, warm season to playfully frolic in the green fields. However, Helheim’s residents have come to fear it. While all of the continent is an undisputed claim of Achsony, most of its inner territories are out of Achson control. The warm climate, difficult terrain, and hostile wildlife make Helheim’s core difficult to tame; in contrast with the more calm and temperate coastal regions, which hold most of its 10 million residents.

However, this is not the greatest fear of the colonists. The local lizardman population of the inner areas has continuously launched raids into Achson territory. Armed with their rudimentary intelligence, stone-age tools, and deadly instinct, a lizardman can easily kill an unsuspecting human, of which they have seemed to develop a taste for. Due to their cold-blooded nature, lizardmen are most active during the warmer months, retreating to their caves on the onset of winter.

Recently, lizardman populations have dwindled, thanks to the efforts of the Helheim Colonial Corps. The HCC has launched expeditions to exterminate the lizardmen, deemed as dangerous pests. However, small pockets still remain, and have launched more daring and damaging raids into the frontier settlements compared to the previous years.

Yesterday, Governor-General István Báthory formally requested the Ministry of War to send additional troops to reinforce the HCC, stating in his telegram that “Achson lives are in great danger” and that “[our] current resources are barely enough”. The MoW has not yet given a reply, but reinforcements are likely to arrive, just like last year.

Teutonish politician proposes Avalon Concordat be more than just a “military alliance”
Image
Left: Heinrich von Braunschweig-Lübeck; Right: Rothsburg Palace, meeting place of the Avalon Concordat's Council of Representatives

The Avalon Concordat is the semi-official term used to describe the military alliance between Achsony, Albion, Hinomoto, Teutonia, and a few other nations formed in 1764. It was named after the HRMS Garden of Avalon, the first ironclad battleship of the Royal Achson Navy where King James, King Arthur II, Empress Hinoko, and King Friedrich IV sat down, had a cup of tea, and decided on the fate of their informal partnerships.

During the 55-year existence of the Concordat, it grew in membership. Starting with 7 members, it now has 24, its latest addition being the Republic of Baguet in 1802. Its roles have evolved too. Initially just a military alliance, it is now also a free-trade group and scientific association.

However, the Teutonish Foreign Minister, Heinrich von Braunschweig-Lübeck, submitted a proposition to Secretary General Albert von Clausewitz of the Avalon Concordat, stating “to promote the interests of the Concordat and its members, further integration must be pursued.”

While nothing has been finalised as of yet, many of the suggestions are broad in scope and considered by many to be revolutionary. Examples being “the opening of all borders to fellow member states”, “visa-free access and free migration”, “organisation-wide integrated standards and policies”, and “an integrated currency system”, among others.

He was met with both praise and criticism. Wilhelm von Koeln, our very own Prime Minister, called it an “outstanding move”. Baguetish War Minister and Senator, Philippe d’Anjou, on the other hand, said “it would put the independent operation of the member states in jeopardy”.

The Council of Representatives of the Avalon Concordat in Rothsburg Palace, Hannofer, Achsony would be discussing the matter, and deciding whether or not the suggestions put forward would be heeded or overlooked. While hopes are high for at least some of these to be implemented, fully following the plan would take a lot of resources and time.

Habsburg and Muscovia sign Treaty of Lemberg, may lead to possible rivalry with Avalon Concordat
Image
Left: Troops meet to shake hands at the Habsburg-Muscovian border; Right: Dimitri Malashenko and Franz Ludwig shake hands

Just a month ago, the two great powers of Habsburg and Muscovia were at the brink of open war. Tensions were high both at land and sea as the two nations wrestled each other for dominance over East Evropia, as they have done for the past half-century.

However, these tensions subsided. To the surprise of many, Tsar Iosif III openly announced a desire to talk with Habsburg regarding their situation. This led to the signing of the “Treaty of Non-Aggression and Cooperation between the Archduchy of Habsburg, the Tsardom of Muscovia, and their Dependent States”, or for brevity the Treaty of Lemberg, on the afternoon of 17 March 1819.

Officially, it declares a 10-year-long guarantee that either country would not declare hostilities with the other, along with the mutual reduction of military deployments on their shared border. However, the two primary signatories, Dimitri Malashenko and Prince Franz Ludwig, the foreign minister and crown prince of Muscovia and Habsburg, respectively, have discussed the formation of a military alliance similar to that of the Avalon Concordat.

While the action was a reason for celebration in the capital cities of Wean and Sankt Petrograd, this action was met with firm disapproval from the Avalon Concordat’s membership. Habsburg, Muscovia, and the Avalon Concordat are known to each hold various claims, big and small, on each other’s territory. A Masowian representative to the Concordat, Celestyna Jankowski, stated “Evropia lies divided in two, with my motherland right in the middle.”

The possibility that the Treaty of Lemberg will continue beyond its current state is very much likely. However, where it has ended an old rivalry, it has created a new one; one that might plunge the continent into war.

Freyja II and József Attila discuss formation of Magiarish government-in-exile in light of Treaty of Lemberg
Image
Left: Queen Freyja II; Middle: József Attila Báthory; Right: Archduke Ferdinand II

In 1526, the Magiarish Succession Crisis led to conflict between the then Duchy of Habsburg and the Kingdom of Magiary (Magiarish: Magyar Királyság). The old Magiarish king, János IV, died without an heir, which prompted György Báthory, a prominent Magiarish noble, to take the throne. However, the Habsburg Duke Franz I, cousin of János, disputed this. What followed was a 4-year war leading to the Habsburg rule over Magiary and the exile of the House of Báthory.

The exiles went on to use their wealth and status to put themselves in prominent positions around the courts of the Holy Germanian Empire, particularly around the Grand Duchy of Hannofer. Examples are the artist László Báthory, whose works include the Tree in the Meadow and the Razing of Panon, and Field Marshal Miklós Báthory, a general in the Royal Achson Army who fought alongside King James.

The House of Báthory is currently headed by József Attila Báthory, who is currently the only claimant to the throne of the now defunct Kingdom of Magiary, styled King Attila of Magiary. Living in the Báthory Estate just outside Jamesburg, the Báthorys are close associates of the House of Nero.

Yesterday, in a casual discussion over some tea, the Queen and József mentioned the souring of Achson-Habsburg relations over the Treaty of Lemberg. The Queen half-jokingly suggested the restoration of Magiary to József’s rule should Achsony and Habsburg end up at war, to which he nodded in agreement.

The Magiarish aren’t too fond of the Archduchy of Habsburg, as shown in the Noble Revolt of 1611 and the Magiarish Revolution in 1735, which both failed. József hopes to form a government consisting of his fellow Magiarish exiles, eventually moving to topple Habsburg and reclaim their lost lands.

A King without a Kingdom, József could at least lead his government from the safety of his Achson estate. For now, however, he can only dream for his people.

Wanted murderer Johann von Pfalz kills police officer in Achen before crossing Achson-Wallon border
Image

Johann von Pfalz, wanted for the murder of Deputy Prime Minister Frederick Butcher and 10 others, has been missing for the past month. Just yesterday, he was found in the city of Achen, near the border with Wallony, by a police officer named Nicholas O’Sullivan.

Nicholas reported the sighting to the Achen Police Headquarters through telephone from his Police Box before he was killed in cold blood by Johann in the midst of his telephone call. His superior, Sergeant Harold Edmundson, said his last intelligible words through the phone were “He’s here, I’m done for.”

The Police immediately went, bringing submachine guns and shotguns alongside their pistols and batons in anticipation of this known threat. However, Johann had already left the scene. The Army was called, and soon troops were all over the city searching for him.

However, a pair of Wallon border guards, Guillaume Cousteau and Pierre Beaubois, said to have witnessed a man “of his stature” cross the border through the unfenced wooded area. When they asked him to stop and show his passport, he merely “disappeared into thin air”.

Now outside Achson jurisdiction, the capture of Johann von Pfalz is now uncertain. However, many at home sigh in relief that he is now wreaking havoc somewhere else.

Civil war in Alexandria! Angered citizens rise against their God-Emperor
Image

In Theopolis, the disaster-struck capital of the Holy Alexandrian Realm, citizens gathered in front of the Divine Temple of Dawn, the largest place of worship in Alexandria and the official residence of the God-Emperor. God-Emperor Konstantinos XII himself had fled to his summer villa in the isle of Crete following the Great Fire of Theopolis a few weeks earlier.

The group, numbering the thousands, consisting of the urban poor and those whose homes have burned down, demanded to see the God-Emperor. The temple’s guards kindly asked them to leave. The mob refused, so more guards were called. A man amongst them attempted to climb the fence, and when he was shot, the crowd charged at the guards, overwhelming them easily. They looted the temple, and killed its entire staff of guards.

When news of the chaos spread, many rebel elements all throughout Alexandria decided to make their move; the KKA and the Greyshirt Movement, far-left and far-right militant extremist groups, respectively, being the largest of them. Large cities such as Athenapolis and Thessalonica fell to rebel hands as the weakened Alexandrian Army desperately tried to put up a fight.

Many nations, most notably the Archduchy of Habsburg, the Tsardom of Muscovia, and the Kingdom of Castillia have all sent aid to the rebels in the form of weapons, supplies, and even volunteers in an effort to ease the downfall of the Alexandrian government. Meanwhile, the God-Emperor’s forces stand alone, their initial advantages slowly but surely slipping away.

The Avalon Concordat, on the other hand, is indifferent to the situation. Achson representative Martha von Ritzenhaufe said “the incompetent yet self-righteous bastard had it coming” while Baguetish representative Jean d’Marseille said “we need not concern ourselves with non-members”. Needless to say, the Concordat will likely not act on the situation at all.

Achson Army announces newest rifle: the M1819; set to replace current infantry rifles by 1825
Image
Left: An example of the M1819; Right: A soldier during the M1819's field tests

After two years of development and testing, the experimental semi-automatic rifle by Brauneberg-Anderson (BA) Weapons has finally passed the rigorous and strict testing conducted by the Ministry of War’s Weapons Procurement and Testing Bureau. Officially dubbed the Model 1819 self-loading rifle, it is poised to replace the M1787 bolt-action rifles currently in service with the Achson military.

The BA M1819 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered in the same 8×60mm BA ammunition of the M1787. In contrast with the M1787’s 10-round built-in magazine, the M1819 has a detachable 10-round box magazine, which allows it to be reloaded with spare magazines alongside the commonly-issued charger clips.

Being a semi-automatic self-loader, it increases the firepower capable of being produced by the individual soldier at a given time. However, this comes at the cost of slightly increased maintenance. It has an effective firing range of 600 metres, which can be increased to 1,200 metres with telescopic sights.

An individual M1819 rifle comes at €12*, which is €2.5 more expensive than the M1787, which has led its critics to cite it as a “needless waste of money”. However, many of its initial users praised it for being “accurate, fast, and effective”.

The rifle will enter production in 2 weeks. The Ministry of War has placed an order for 200,000 units, hoping to phase out the M1787 fully by 1825. The elite units of the military will take priority in receiving the new rifle—the Jäger regiments, mechanised infantry, and the Corps of Mages especially so.

Freestead of Reiga officially joins the Avalon Concordat 4 months after formal application
Image
Left: Chancellor Jakob Obermeier; Right: Members of the Reigan Gendarmery march through the city's streets

The Free Stead of Reiga (Teutonish: Freie Stadt Riga | Muscovish: Вольный Город Рига) has finally been inducted into the Avalon Concordat as a full member yesterday. Secretary General Albert von Clausewitz announced in the Concordat’s headquarters in Rothsburg Palace that Reiga is now a full member of the Concordat, with the privileges and responsibilities that entails.

Reiga is a small nation surrounded completely by Muscovia, with the small exception being its coast on the East Sea. It started as a settlement established by the Germanic Order, eventually growing into a trading city controlled by the Hanse Merchant League. It changed hands many times, but mostly managed to keep its autonomy thanks to its wealthy merchant class. It is mostly inhabited by Teutonish people, with Muscovish immigrants and the native Balt Elves comprising significant minorities.

As of recent, however, the Tsardom of Muscovia has been a threat to its sovereignty. Over a year ago, Tsar Iosif III has sent a demand to the Reigan government to accept its annexation as an independent province in the Tsardom. Teutonia promised to guarantee its independence should Muscovia attack. In December 1818, the Reigan Chancellor, Jakob Obermeier, submitted a request to formally join the Avalon Concordat.

Grand Marshal Eugen Rommel, head of the Achson military and a proponent in its membership in the Concordat, called Reiga a “strategic point in the future conflict with Muscovia”, citing “a well-defended thorn beside the beast will distract its armies in a critical time”.

As world tension rises fast, will another member keep the peace or further the plunge into turmoil?
