Humanity's first step of colonizing the galaxy outside of Sol began in the Tiria about a year ago when the first colony ships made landfall on their assigned worlds. The goals of these colony ships are not all the same. Some are it is a military operation, a new business venture, a quest for science and to safeguard humanity's future. Whatever the reason the all of the colonies have strived to survive and gained a foothold in this oddly habitable solar system. From now on, it will be up to the colonies to whether they can survive in their new home. Who knows, there be a reason outside of cosmic chance for the system high amount of life-bearing worlds. If any secrets lie in the Tiria system, maybe the colonies will find it or just ignore it and continue their attempts to flourish in the system. The choice is up to them.

The Tiria System
Moon of Zeathea Colony
Alpinae

HAL Corporation Alpinae Colony CIO Alicia Green began her day hours before reporting to her office. It began with a continental breakfast, stretching exercises, followed by a half hour of Bao quan (leopard style kung fu) forms. Then meditation, a shower and a half hours practice on her viola.

She arrived in the office feeling healthy, centered and calm. She sat at her desk and notified SAIGE that her reports were ready.

SAIGE's holographic imaging system activated and displayed a map of the colony settlement. It's voice greeted the woman, "Good morning, Alicia. How are you functioning, today?".

"I am well, SAIGE," replied Alicia. "I am pleased to report that all initially planned projects have been completed. Again, due to Alpinae's terrain, food production is only 70% of an earthly farm, but we have a sufficient excess of 100% more than necessary to feed the colonists for this period. Rare minerals have given us a 20% increase in available energy and the mine is working at 100% efficiency. "

"Very good," replied SAIGE, "and the vast majority of the colonists are content?"

"Yes", answered the Chief Implementation Officer.

"Thank you ", replied Superior Artificial Intelligence Global Executive. "Here is our next project, a hydroponic farm. Allocate all materials from the mining operation and it will be finished in under 3 months. Bank the excess energy and food for later use.... Also, send the Exploration Team eastward of the settlement."

"I will inform the department heads, SAIGE," said Alicia.

"Thank you, Alicia," responded SAIGE. Then the A.I. dismissed her, so she could go do her job.

Grey Wolf Company
Selon, Tiria System

James Carter plows his stick into the icy tundra as a new wave of snow blows into his face. The winds were bitter and had a bite of frost, and the terrain was soft, but made travel cumbersome. As he finally reached the peak of the snowy tundra he could see it, Poseidon I, the first colony ship.

Well, really a colony ship anymore really. Afterall, its been a colony for little over a year. In fact, most flight mechanisms no longer work, so it isn't exactly space worthy anymore. Regardless it was home in James eyes, and begun making a steady speed back to the colony.

As he got to one of the gates a voice roared at him, allowing him to hear it over the roaring winds.

"STATE YOUR PURPOSE AND NAME," the voice beckoned.

"James Carter of the exploration team," he shouted.

"YOU ARE CLEAR FOR ENTRY," it replied.

A door opening revealing a small chamber, a airlock if you will, less so for oxygen purposes, more so on maintaining heat. Regardless the man rushed in eager ly awaiting warmth. As the airlock door behind him finishes its clicks and shifts, the door in front of him opens revealing a man awaiting his return.

This man wore a fine military uniform befitting a naval Commander of the United States Space Command, USSC. Clearly the superior of everyone in this colony. His hair was black and he had blue eyes. On his flanks were two USSC marines.

"James Carter welcome home," said the man.

"Well, if it isn't the Commander himself, Maddox Laggan," said James giving his good friend a hug.

"It's good to see you're back," said Maddox, "however weren't you supposed to return alongside your exploration team?"

"Aye sir, however with this blizzard our team was forced to stop. We returned hoping that you could perhaps provide a resupply for the days to come," replied James.

"Will do, however seems to me that you'll need some rest, before you return out there," said Maddox.

"Will do Commander," said James as he begun to head to his quarters.

"How is the production going?" Asked Albein to mines manager

"At an all-time high, thank God Castrio send us those machines" Replied the Manager

"Well good thing they are energy efficient, we have a limit for that"

"What have you said!" Shouted the Manager as they were walking by a very loud machine

"That good thing they a-"Albein was interrupted by a worker

"Titan closing in on 6th!"

"Evacuate personnel, secure machines!" Albein dispatched the command

The Titans, a pest, they were a huge problem, to say the least, they nearly killed 700 in Outreach ( First Settlement name ) but also halt our production, without minerals we will not be able to build farms and power stations, without those we won't be able to produce food and power, without power we can't produce minerals, it's a closed cycle that cannot be started by anything, we can't afford that.

"Sir the Titan is getting closer, we need to go!" Shouted to him one of the workers

"Right, let's go then"

Titan will be done feasting on minerals, OUR minerals, in about two hours then we will be able to get back to work, to prevent the start of the cycle.

On the board of train leading from the mines, Albein tracked the worker that warned them, his name was Gerald, all miners had their names printed on the back of their coats.

"Good work Gerald, if you didn't spot this Titan we would be dead meat" Gerald smiled but Albein didn't notice it, he continued talking, "I'll create a new job in the mines, spotter, you will be the first one, sounds good"

"Yes, Sir"

Tiria System
Arilia
Balka

"This is a good day Kiriaki, Yankul said to his second in command as he breathed in the warm ocean air. Today was the anniversary when the Argo first landed on Arilia. A celebration was in full swing throughout the colony and Yankul had just walked down the shore after giving a speech. The colony had landed on one of the bigger archipelagos and there is still room for expansion.

"It is a good day sir, and you sure you would not be down the shoreline near the party?

"I am sure, it is nice to be alone for a short while, he said and went to sit down. Sitting just close enough to the incoming waves to get his feet wet. "We have come far since we landed here despite how bad the storms here can be".

"I know that well enough sir, Kiriaki choose to sit down with Yankul and watch the waves. "Though we need to be careful, back on Earth the storms I remember how bad the storms because of global warming. Even Greece was getting some bad ones and I would hate it if we make this world worse because of us".

"I am in the same boat, Kiriaki" "I do not want to mess up this beautiful planet either". "We need to be better here and I hope the other colonies in this system share the sentiment".

"I hope so sir"

"Kiriaki, you do not have to call me sir all the time, especially done in the middle of the celebration".

"It is a force of habit, unlike you I was in the military before I was assigned to help run Balka".

"I remember and maybe now is the time to talk about......"

A loud alarm started to sound throughout the colony.

Kiriaki immediately got up and started to help Yankul up. "Another storm is coming and we need to get to the shelters". Kiriaki said in a focused tone.

'"I can get myself up and I had hoped we could have more time before a storm would hit us". Yankul got up and both of them walked to the nearest shelter. Entering it with the rest of the colonists and the celebration continued inside the safety of the shelters.

Solitude, Little Sibir

A grainy recording from the leader of the expedition. Sounds of feet moving, idle chatter, and carts moving are heard muffled from the hall over. Some radio in the distance softly plays archaic music of days in history, while the heating system slowly buzzes overhead.

"This is Scientific Captain Victor Aliyev, of the Eurasian Federation's mission to the Tiria system. It is January Sixteenth, at four AM Moscow time... The night's snow was very, very hard. The shipping doors were frozen closed... we had to pry them open. It took hours. We lost a large percentage of work today on that.

The major generator for the officer's bay began to fail... it stuttered, we had to switch to secondary heating until we could ensure it's operation. The structure of the operations center has already shone signs of decay, I am afraid of future malfunctions.

One Doctor Kunchuga who left three days ago to the northern wastes sent us his daily briefings... he is a week away from discovering what could be on the other side- progress is steady. His vehicles have managed well, no major issues so far. But I am concerned. The next great storm is imminent, and though he has appropriate supply to weather, I can't help but think.... No. No he will be fine. We must continue forward, triumph for our motherland at home. For the people fighting against the reactionary menace that consumes our home, we must fight against the ice and snow. God knows what may befall us if their colony has plans of expansion. We will need to begin digging defenses, but perhaps the conflict will not make her way to Tiria-"

"Oh?- Yes, yes, I will take some tea. Thank you Peter."

"We have adequate food for many many days, despite the inhospitable climate we can still make due. Peter has been a nice assistant, he has helped me through my illness well. We brought enough medicine for many many more sick days, although I am antsy for the next supply shipment. I hope it doesn't delay... All and all, we have survived another week. Morale is moderate- but as always, there are concerns, and all get worried whenever another thing nearly breaks. But we will get there. Perhaps once we can build up the colony, ship in advanced technology from Ukraine, we can be more assured of our situation.

But, the night grows darker, while the sun rises soon on what is left of our homeland... all we can do is hope we do well. For all of humanity.

I will record anything else of note this week in next week's log. This is goodbye then, and salutations.

Captain Aliev, signing out."

Chapter 1: Planetfall

"And when at last we are come through the holy void, the space between stars where only God is found, I yearn to look upon a new homeworld. A verdant jewel, our first step out of the cradle. Mankind was succored and weaned by earth, a babe grown to the flower of manhood in her loving care. But man cannot stay in his cradle forever" - Chaplain Ismail Federov, Address to Landing Faculty

Descent, Melody
15:00 Hours, Rotation 8-Upsilon, Earth Year 2134

Down through the pale blue atmosphere of the crystalline world the lander from the Initiative streaked, the noise of her passage a gathering storm. Through wispy cirrostratus she punched in her haste, a glowing comet of red and white and orange hues making its way with alacrity to the bosom of the world below. In her wake the clouds boiled down angrily, the turbulence of her passage disturbing the tranquility above the endless crystalline plains of glittering pearl and effervescent ice. At his impact suspensor in the command chamber of the Deliverance, Gregori's eyes were wide with awe as the world swelled to its full grandeur below.

The lakes, sky blue marked with violet. The seas, mirror smooth and like so much molten silver. It was a landscape which a man's mind could scarce imagine, let alone comprehend in its pristine majesty. And it was the gift to mankind, to the Initiative, waiting for sojourners to take their repose upon its peaceful shores.

A shuddering filled the immense monolith of gray and black, retrothrusters igniting at the pre-programmed routine of the landing cycle. The Russian's teeth rattled in his head as the reverberations filled body and blood, and then they slowly began to abate, the calamitous descent of the Deliverance arrested by the might of volatile chemistry and the resources of a dying world. Commander Asmodev smiled wanly at the raven-haired beauty in the gray mission jumpsuit across from him, as much to express reassurance for himself as truly display affection, but his heart still sang when his wife gamely smiled back, despite the pressure of the deceleration.

An automated voice rang out through the cabin, clearly audible even above the roar of engine and atmosphere.

"Landing projected in T-minus three minutes thirty seconds, and counting."

A few more minutes, after months of orbital maneuvers following the desynch, and then they would finally have arrived. Melody, the jewel of the Tirian Expanse, in more ways than one. Mineral scans from the lower atmosphere had been virtually unusable, the crystalline crust being so filled with dense precious metals and heavy isotopes as to make deep sensing hopeless. Still, a fecundity of riches was not something for which one should not thank God, however inconvenient that situation had been from a planning perspective.

More shudders, this one slamming the Slav down into his seat again, the true end of the deceleration from orbit. All of the colonists had had to be cleared for space travel, but sure as the sun rose in the east, someone would have blacked out again. Too much excitement, and pulling a few Gs, that was a poor combination for those of dubious health.

As sure as the sun rose in the east. Luckily Melody's rotation was appropriate for that. Gregori had heard some of the other landers disembarking from the Voyager would be heading to worlds where that would no longer be true. The Commander merely thanked the maker that the charter for the Initiative had been one of the first approved, and so the world the endeavor was landing upon was one that was, all in all, vaguely earthlike. Inhabitable, as far as he was concerned. Oh, the gravity was a few percentages higher than might be convenient, but that was an engineering problem, not one of drastic proportions.

And then it happened. A gentle crunch, and outside the tiny portholes of the Deliverance brilliant white mountains swelled into view suddenly. They had arrived, and it was time to get to work. As the computer released the restraints, the Siberian smiled, stood up, and stepped forward to enfold his wife in the most heartfelt hug she had had in years. A new home, for mankind.

One Year Later

The prefabs had been deployed, the small nascent settlement of Descent now a burgeoning metropolis, a tiny echo of the vast megacities of the Trans-Siberian State here on the virgin world of Melody. She had grown and thrived, the foresight of the mission to this distant world having supplied her with exactly what she needed to maintain her ongoing activities. With the basics down, and a steady stream of heavily concentrated metals and Earth-compliant foodstuffs entering the brilliant white quarters of the colonial triumph, the Commander finally approved an exploration towards the magnetic north of the beautiful crystalline world.

They had orbital scans, of course. But there were so many more things that could be learned about a world from walking it on foot, seeing it from the back of a rover. Into the low gemstone foothills the Explorers passed, their buggies and supply crawlers slowly disappearing into the lifeless but gorgeous terrain.

Monthly Status Report January 2134

By the authority of the Colonial Assembly,
Republic of Aurora,
North Sea Council of Nations

In accordance with the Alpha Protocol, the priority of the first post-landing mission month was the establishment of a self-sufficient industrial base from which expansion may be contemplated. All industries were to be made sustainable, in accordance with the criteria following. The industrial base had to be reproducible; all industries included within the base must be capable of producing the infrastructural support and capital equipment necessary for the creation of another industrial base like it. The industrial base had to be self-supporting; all industries must draw its maintenance, repair, input, and monitoring resources from other present industries. The industrial base had to be sufficient; all conceivable needs and base comforts of the colonial population were to be drawn from the industrial base. The industrial base had to be adaptable; the industrial base must be sufficiently flexible in the goods produced to fill any unanticipated future needs of the Republic.

It is the assessment of the Director of Industry that the first mission month was largely successful in establishing an industrial base that is sustainable in accordance with the criteria above. Local resources sufficient in both quantity and accessibility, when complemented with resource cycles drawn from the Colonial vessel were located for the production of capital equipment, consumer goods, and edible nutrition for the present population. Although resource cycles are non-reproducible, and thus unsuitable to rely on for a more permanent production structure, it is also the assessment of the Director of Industry that the capital goods produced by the present industrial base will soon make local resources of a lower accessibility available for extraction. The expansion of the present production structure to take advantage of these less accessible resources will be a major objective of the second mission month.

For this purpose, and to present the Department of Industry with more options with regards future growth and expansion, the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment was deployed to prospect for promising sites.

Physical living space for the colonial population and the basis for the information and communication structure of the Capital Administrative Region were established at the flat bottom of a largely silicate- rock and metallic crater surrounded by volatile ices, to ensure relative ease of access to both mineral and ice resources. The Director of Research and Development reports that the atmospheric composition of Aurora is not toxic, but marginally unbreathable. Leaving pressurised constructions without breathing aids are to be forbidden except in pressing emergencies.

Despite the relatively harsh living conditions of this early stage of the colonisation mission, no significant dissent or sociopolitical instability was observed within the Republic in this first mission month. Some friction between national communities were observed, but were well within anticipated anomalies and in any case were not more significant than those observed in pre-mission trials with the present colonial population. Provided that a successful industrial basis materialise as anticipated, living conditions improve, and confidence in the colonial mission consequently improve, a worsening of this situation is not anticipated.

During this first mission month, some radio transmissions, official and leaked, from other colonies within the system was detected. In accordance with the Alpha Protocol, all colonists were reminded to maintain radio silence whenever possible to ensure minimum detection of the Republic by other colonies. On recommendation from the Department of Foreign Affairs, it was decided that diplomatic silence would be extended for another month; the Colonial Assembly does not at the present moment consider the benefits from establishing open communications with the other colonies of the system to be sufficiently significant for such an enterprise to be beneficial. No other colonies on the planet of Aurora itself was detected; by all evidence, the Republic is alone on the planet. Nonetheless, the 1st and 2nd Rifle Regiments were stationed in the Capital Administrative Region to respond to any military threats should such appear.

Chapter 2: Prosperity

Industry is next to godliness. Do not be content with the unordered state of the world around you - man is called to be a steward, and a good steward orders all things so that they may flourish in their appointed time and place. Build. Innovate. Organize." - Fabricator Zukhov Borisos, Daily Exhortation 53 to the Miners of Complex Aleph

Descent, Melody
02:00 Hours, Rotation 11-Theta, Earth Year 2134

The pounding of heavy machines awoke the Commander from his sleep, and the restless Gregori pulled on a light jumpcoat before stepping out onto the balcony of the spire to take a look over at the construction. It was a suffering, really - this was the third night this rotation that he had been awakened by blasting the the boremine being emplaced just over towards the eastern horizon. The lights there illuminating the construction, for the work was continuing around the clock to blast through the tough crystalline sublayer, seemed almost like an early rising of the sun that Melody called her primary.

In some ways it felt wrong to exploit a world like this. But the mines that the Initiative was cutting into the landscape were as sustainable as could be feasibly contrived, and the sheer embarrassment of riches that could be rung from every kilogram of soil and stone extracted from the lustrous surface of Melody a wonder to behold. Humanity needed to advance, and it would advance on the back of a manufacturing marvel, the seeds of which were being sewn in the humble settlement of Descent.

Month 2, Day 1

CIO Alicia Green walked into her boss's office. It was the first day of the new 'month'. Alicia had already input the various reports that SAIGE would analyze.

There were the production reports, the use reports, the 'banking' reports and the report from the Exploration Team. The construction of the new Hydroponic Farm was proceeding on schedule, it was forty percent completed at this time. Also, there had been two hundred fifty births.

SAIGE greeted the CIO as she entered, "Good morning, Alicia."

"Good morning, SAIGE", she replied, "By the reports, it appears that all current tasks are being achieved as projected."

"Indeed", answered the Artificial Intelligence. It continued, although Alicia could not be certain if it was only being conversational, "I wish that I had the capability to monitor the Exploration Team, it could be very informative."

Then the machine said, "After the Exploration Team is rested and resupplied, they are to survey the grid to the southeast of our settlement."

"Of course, SAIGE," she answered. "Are there any other orders?"

"Yes, Alicia", it replied, "Please report to the medical staff for your IVF. The timing is good for you and you must also help the colony grow."

Alicia was surprised, but did not question SAIGE's order. "I understand" was the only thing she could say.

CIO Alicia Green exited the office and followed her orders

Tiria System
Esperia
BACV (Britannia Arms Corporation Vessel) Aegis

"Orbit complete, starting manual pilot systems." The ship's system announced as Lide Jackson stood on the bridge, watching the star slowly dawn upon the Ferrous planet of Esperia. "Bring up a report on the colony, full analysis." He said, directing the question towards the ship's automated system as the holographic screen displayed a loading circle for barely a second before full reports came up. The colony was steadily producing minerals, although the food situation was getting somewhat desperate. On the ground, the farms deployed couldn't provide excess for the colony due to the soil but they were still sustaining, just barely alive.

As he read through reports, an officer came into the bridge of the vessel. Saluting for a moment, Lide turned his head for a moment. "Sir, new reports from the ground, the expedition is ready." Nodding as he turned his head back, the officer saluted once more before leaving as Jackson sighed and sat into the captain's chair. He watched as cameras on the ground showed a ground team leaving the colony, heading east for new lands.

The ship in orbit, the Aegis was the first colony ship to reach the planet. Rather than deploying it as the main building, the Aegis instead dropped pods containing supplies and some pre-built facilities for construction. It continued to orbit the planet, serving as the main mothership for the colony and the mobile base in the case of any emergency that required them to evacuate.

Once again, as time passed over the sleepy planet, another day shall dawn once more.

"...to the ultimate abstraction which, of course, is that of the acting system. The most blunt division of objects in the universe might divide them into acting systems, that is to say, objects that do things, and the environment, to which things are done. In such a perspective the human being, the nation-state, the automobile, and the army division are all analogous to each other and can be collectively analysed. They all hold by evolutionary circumstance or deliberate design a purpose to be achieved, are immersed into an environment from which they draw resources and information, determines with that latter how best to utilise the former to achieve the purpose inherent in it, and maintains a definite internal structure and protocols of behaviour to preserve their ability to do these things.

One similarity between successful acting systems is that their information processing resource expenditure is relatively high. This is not to say that every such system is successful; readers can no doubt recall the bureaucratic swamps that many administrative organs can devolve into in environments where failure is not sufficiently punished. Developing an efficient acting system, thus, must involve two factors: one, information processing must be encouraged and two, failure must be discouraged. An electoral government fulfills both of these criteria.

Because the resource-gathering power of such an acting system is virtually unchallenged, the net quantity of resources availed to it is directly and almost solely dependent on its ability to determine which resources are and are not worth using. In order to maximise its ability to take action, correct or otherwise, an electoral government must have as precise and accurate information as possible on the resources it possesses or can acquire. Second, an electoral government is punished very harshly for its failure. The purpose of a government is to uphold the public welfare and elected governments that fail in this purpose, that are unsuccessful in improving the lives of many members of the public as judged by themselves, cease to exist and are replaced.

Thus, viewing the creation of an efficient and well-directed administration and civil service as the overall objective when designing from a systemic perspective a state for a society with no meaningful history..."

Grey Wolf Company
Selon, Tiria System

It was clear, that in early development in any civilization, that resources ultimate decide how fast a society is built, that reality didn’t part from the Grey Wolves. As military engineers construct the mining structure, they also set up the equipment too- allowing them to easily obtain the minerals below with ease. The Commander was pleased by these developments.

This will allow them to have the edge in advancing, beating those other colonies and taking the vast resources of Tiria themselves. As he receives the predicted statistics of this year, he orders the exploration team, to head east this year, to find new lands for this rich snowscape. If all goes well, they could easily rule Tiria all for themselves.
Energy produced, (10 x 1) = 10.

Pinkerton Settlement Site, Remnant
Mission Year 1, Mission Month 2

It had been 2 months since the colony ship landed on the planet Remnant. The planet itself was partially blown up and had made a hole and asteroid belt around it. On the surface of the planet that wasn't blown up was a savage deathworld that had resisted terraforming attempts and cut into the food economy. They had to rely on the manufacturing of bullets and the mining of the expose minerals. It makes a massive difference for the guardsmen to have a steady supply of equipment to fight the savage beasts.

The first thing that they needed to do is to try and build up energy and more industry for the sake of getting things working in the settlement and see about scouting the planet for any answers as the reason why the planet got blown up in the way it did.

Chapter 2: Prosperity
The Lineage of Grandeur

"It is not given to men to understand the greatest beauties of the universe. Science may describe what her poor attempts at comprehension make known, but it is one thing to describe, another to percieve in truth. Knowledge is a poor thing, to reduce to syllables and molecules and numbers the tapestry of the cosmos, and we poorer for trying to always render down the wonders of our existence into these components. A snowflake is more than just an arrangement of frozen latticeworks; a galaxy, more than a ball of stars. Words are impoverished cousins of experience: go, and see, and marvel." - Captain Alexsander Kremoliv, Explorator, Memories of the Wilderness

Grid-Square Designation Eta-Eta-Zulu-Foxtrot, Melody
15:00 Hours, Rotation 19-Mu, Earth Year 2134

The rattling in the rear of the rover was desperate, the Explorator reflected. Whoever had approved them for deployment onto the violet plains that stretched eastward away from Descent had failed to account for the peculiarly resilient nature of the soil here. Each rock could be felt as the wide-tracked vehicle crunched its way between immense quartz formations, and Alex only felt pity for the poor bastards that were following behind in the main crawler without the suspension of the drive-cabin to preserve their thoroughly shaken spinal columns.

"Entering Grid-Square Eta-Eta-Zulu-Foxtrot, 15:03." chimed the voice of the onboard AI, and the Russian man nodded to himself. The rough terrain aside, they were on schedule for their course. A good thing too, given the Zarya had slipped a track in the early hours of the twilight of Melody's rotation, and they had had to stop for repairs. It was an optimistic timetable, one the eggheads back home didn't really expect the little band of mechanized mappers and sounding rigs to stick to. But the Commander was a man of precision, and his subordinates aspired to be likewise.

"Stas, pull us over near that formation." intoned the captain, and the bearded driver nodded. With a twitch of his massive paws the course of the lead vehicle altered smoothly, and the great spire of blue-white stone reaching toward the heavens swiftly swelled in the forward viewscreen of the rover. The captain had chosen in for strictly geological concerns, but that didn't prevent him from being somewhat awed by the nature of the structure they were approaching. It was probably, at his lowest estimation, the width of a city, and it had to stretch at least half a kilometer into the air nearly straight up, a jagged tendril-mountain extending from the nearly-flat pale-violet soil like a spear thrown by a vengeful pagan god.

Alexsander reached down to the dashboard of the growling rover, and fiddled with several controls. Without satellites in orbit, relay communication could be spotty, but shortwave radios had proven adequate for the needs of the exploration teams so far.

"Vehicle Three, be advised expedition command has marked the base of the approaching crystalline structure for acoustic survey. Begin equipment prep cycles."

"Affirmative, Lead Vehicle." was the only response from the survey crawler, and the captain nodded. Good men, well-trained. The finest Russia had been able to offer, pioneers to tame the stars for the Rodina and the Initiative. All in a days work, as the tiny black ants of the explorers crew crawled over the breathtaking vistas of Melody.

The last month had been uneventful for SAIGE. The Artificial Intelligence often shut itself down when there seemed to be no news on the near horizon.

CIO Green sometimes availed herself of SAIGE’s teaching programs for managing the colony, after all, one of her functions was to assume the leadership role from SAIGE if an improbable event disabled SAIGE. Together, they made and fine-tuned the schedule for the improvement and expansion of Alpinae Colony One.

Now it was the first day of a new month. There would be new data input and the finalization of the plans for the new month.

“Good Morning, Alicia”, SAIGE greeted CIO Green as she entered the sentient computer’s office. Then it inquired, “How are you feeling, today?”

Alicia smiled. Her relationship with SAIGE was becoming easier. Sometimes she imagined that SAIGE had one time been a person whose mind had been uploaded into the computer.

“Good morning, SAIGE”, she answered. “I am quite well, thank you. I’ve input the reports from last month and the projections for this new month. Prospectors found, respectively, minerals and energy worth four units each. As expected, because of our food programs, the populace has been in both good physical and mental health. As a result they have been quite efficient in the production of energy and material giving us an increase of forty percent in both categories. The first Hydroponic Farm will be completed before the middle of the month has been reached and will come online at the beginning of the new month.”

Then Green asked, “Do you still wish to begin the construction of the Industrial Complex after the Hydroponic Farm is completed.”

“Yes”, replied SAIGE. “Building the Hydroponic Farm was a priority, but now the priority will be the mining and production of materials.

SAIGE changed the subject, “I have seen the report and images from the Exploration Team. My records lead me to believe that humans might find it quite beautiful. After the Exploration Team is rested and resupplied, have them survey the grid south of the colony.”

Then, as the A.I. had done the month before, SAIGE surprised the C.I.O. when it asked. “Alicia, did you have your ovulation cycle this last month, or will you need an additional IVF procedure?”

“I did not have a cycle during this last month, SAIGE”, the woman answered. “I believe it was successful.”

“That is good,” said the A.I. “I have been enjoying your success in helping me manage the colony. Should something happen to you, I should like to have a child with your potential available.” Then, “Please implement the new orders.”

Alicia had trouble processing SAIGE’s statement. It was praise coupled with, a maybe unintentional, statement about her mortality. But SAIGE was a computer and she had to stop anthropomorphizing it.

“Yes, SAIGE”, answered Alicia. “It will be done.”

Then she left.

Chapter 3: Destiny

"The inexorable birthright of man is bound up in his ability to use tools. And, insofar as he distinguishes himself from the lesser creatures of the cosmos, his ability to create tools to make other tools. We stand now upon a pinnacle of civilization which rests upon the shoulders of giants; men who made every tool, every hammer, every forge, every steam engine, every microchip which is the basis of our modern world. This is the essence of industry, and advancement, and we would do ill to forget it." - Private Remarks of Provost Zakharov to Manufactorum Council

Descent, Melody
20:00 Hours, Rotation 7-Upsilon, Mission Year 2134

Gregori weighed the small ingot of titanium in his hand, a small smile on his face. The din of the crucible did not phase the foreman, nor more than it bothered the Commander - vacuum sealed smelting with carefully controlled atmospheric input meant the immense furnaces of the Initiative were far more efficient than their counterparts in less developed land, and, though more expensive to manufacture, far less detrimental to their operators and the environment.

"Such a small thing. But the first fruits of our venture here, upon our new home."

Next to Commander Asmodev the man who oversaw the new facility nodded.

"The crystalline soil here is remarkable, really. We're seeing extraction rates fully 50% above the best I saw in Petrenkograd, and they had some damn fine ore sands. Out of the regolith and morraine of the nearby foothills? Don't even get me started. Melody might be the most mineral rich world documented... ever, as far as I know."

"Perfect for our industrial bootstrapping efforts then."

Next to Gregori the foreman merely nodded again. Hard to say much more, when the leader of the entire Strakhov Initiative offered such a noncomittal but benign statement. Oh, there were some concerns about food and energy production. The populace was only growing, as folks were wont to do, and some glitches in the grid had seen minor downticks in output from the fusion coils. But here, in the gleaming stream of metals that coursed day and night from the automated jaws of the factories in the foothills around Descent, lay the seeds of the future.

Pinkerton Tiria Branch, Planet Remnant
Month 3

For the first time in years, we look to the people and told them that things will be different. It brought a new light to look forward to when people come out of cold storage. We're still unsure what the future holds but Pinkerton will change.

Getting people out of cold storage from the ship was a surprisingly difficult endeavor. People knew what they were signing up when joining Pinkerton's only colony ship to the stars but they didn't expect the company to nearly go out of business and the settlement being near a giant fissure. The business was not a garden world, but a deathworld. One that the new people were angry about the prospect of being on a savage planet with an open wound but there was still merit to those who worked.

Allen knew that overseer of the last of the Pinkerton company had to do something and he did it well. A rousing speech was able to rouse the people to work harder and overcome bad history. This made them work on mining the large chasm of minerals that fuels the settlements building. The settlement also wanted to build an extension to the mining complex that was dug inside the chasm for the exposed minerals that make open up in the world.

It still brought it's dangers, People can still die and the cargo lift can malfunction but it was still better than nothing. They would have a major surplus that can be used to boost the industry and make large-scale manufacturing while the exploration team tries to find new things and answers to this world.

Tiria System
Esperia
Site No.1

Esperia Site No.1, the heartland and core of the crown establishment of the colony. The entire site was well developed with some high rise buildings overlooking the city while down below among the streets, poverty reigned nearly supreme. It was almost built in the glory and of the ideals of a sort of utopian dystopia, with the divide being the clearest among all the other sites. At its core, a massive spiralling tower stood proudly. In one end of the coil, housed the Britannia Arms Corporation while the other housed Yamabuki Corporation. At the top, it held the most important room in the entire colony, the governor's office. Or at least the vacant room considering how the government was based aboard the Aegis in orbit.

Watching over the city, Jackson, now in the tower, watched as the team found additional hidden reserves. Resources to help the colony, which was good. At his side, sitting in a sort circular flat seat was a girl. Dressed elegantly in religious wear resembling that of the orders of days past, with the hanging tails on the side of her dress resting on the seat while a veil covered part of the back of her head, complimented fully by her snow white hair. "SI-001, activate." He called out, as she woke up and came to life, standing up and dusting herself before moving over to his side.

"Issue this order to the workers, I want them to immediately begin building up industrial complexes, a new site is to be opened for this. Recall the expedition team and get me a direct line to Britannia Arms as well." As she bowed lightly, rings in her iris began to spin at random. "Orders processed." She said, voice void of life and emotion and she bowed once more. After a while, one of her eye's iris rings spun once more as a holographic screen was pulled up, showing only a soundwave display.

"This is Colonial Governor Lide Jackson reporting in. 3 months into the official establishment and so far things are going fine, that is all for my quarterly report." Before any response could be given, he forced the channel down as he looked over at the girl. She looked so similar yet so unfamiliar, despite being built in the likeness of his daughter. Her empty devoid eyes, but her elegant stance and manner both reminded and dispelled all notions of it ever being like his daughter.

"SI-001, return back to rest mode." As she sat back down on her seat, she closed her eyes once more as the supercomputer began to take things from here.
