Qariki Prince Isimud Missing
Tuesday, January 6, 391 A.C.
Image
Image

QARIK CITY — The Royal House of Qarik reported 87th Prince to the throne, Prince Isimud, to have been missing for the past month.

Isimud is alleged to have fallen out of favor with the Emir of Qarik, Zaqar IV. He has not shown up in any of the past five televised royal family events, which has led to mounting suspicion that something dire is amiss in the Qariki court. The matter is of particular concern due to Isimud's responsibilities as honorary 'commander' of the Royal Qariki Armed Forces.

NGO Human Rights International has accused the Qariki government of 'continued violations of human rights', claiming Isimud's disappearance is another instance of 'state-sanctioned disappearances'. The Emirate's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not offer a comment in reply.

Congress Approves Qarik War
Thursday, January 8, 391 A.C.
Image
Image

SERONDEQUOT — Congress passed the proposal for intervention in Qarik following several days of debate, much to President Stardust's resounding approval.

President Stardust stated he intended to go forward with intervention regardless of the decision of Congress, stating the lives of the Euphemian servicemen present in Qarik were of 'greater value' to him than the opinions of politicians.

With the decision of Congress, war and a series of round-the-board sanctions against the Empire of Sanjar have been put into effect. A no-fly zone is also in the process of being enforced by the FSS Alexandria (CVN-115) Battlegroup.

President Stardust issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Sanjari Emperor Harsu to pull his forces out of Qarik, after which their safety 'absolutely cannot be guaranteed'. Though it is unclear what the Euphemian strategy in Qarik will be, Secretary of Defense Daniel Boingo publicly announced the President, at present, has no intentions to order a full-scale invasion of the Mederune monarchy.

Union Council entering debate over crisis in Qarik
Image

The Union Council in Novus Concordia has entered into an emergency debate regarding the ongoing Qariki Crisis.

Followed by the sudden Sanjari invasion of Qarik, the Euphemian Congress has passed the proposal for intervention in retaliation. The escalation between the two has led to widespread concerns over the various potential consequences of the Qariki War. In order to address the situation, the Union Council has immediately entered into a fierce debate over the matter after receiving reports of the Federal States' decision.

Union President Alexei has stated that the Union understands the current position of the Federal States in the ongoing crisis, and is ready to meet with his Euphemian counterparts to discuss the situation.

On the other hand, Union Protector Generalissimo Shen was still leading further debate in the Council by the time this article was published. While we have received no personal input from him over the issue yet. Union President has informed us on his behalf that the Protector himself does not approve of the unprovoked acts of the Harsu monarch despite the cooperation between the two nations over the past years in various aspects.

Before returning to the Council, President Alexei has stated on the Union Council's behalf that the Council will uphold their responsibility as the guardian of civilizations in making unbiased judgement over the matter, and advised the Empire of Sanjar to cease their unprovoked aggression at once.

NOUVELLES LUNES — The Marinian Government has validated with the Federal States of Euphemie that it will be a participating nation in the state of war initiating within the state of Qarik. Minister of Government Valéntoire Genscard-Thérlons Rapiers Herménégilde commented that the 1er Compagnie de la Mer (Company of the Sea) would be dispatched on behalf of the Marine de l'Étoile Marin (MEM) via the L0391 Merdemoiselle (Sea-Maiden), Etoile Marin's only amphibious assault landing ship and flagship of the MEM. From there, the company would support the Euphemian forces present there as an allied belligerent.

The decision was made without the presumed convention of Parliament, causing a difficulty in government orders. Opposition leaders voiced it as an unconstitutional course of action, though long term politicians confirmed it was within the right of the Crown to enact urgent military actions in the name of national defense or, under the terms of the United Association Compact, allied assistance. It is understood Princess Amilessi Fléau Côpetia III spoke with the ruling Coalition leader and Minister of Government in private when the news first reached the island, and approved on their behalf to allow an attaché be sent to aid the Euphemian division in Qarik. This decision was determined only after the procedures listed under the United Association Compact were validated beforehand by Euphemian officials.

The Merdemoiselle will depart from Masais Harbour on the 11th of January, officials stated. It is expected to arrive in vicinity of Qarik on the 16th of January, travelling with a complement of 250 men. The MEM has confirmed they will be basing a multitude of VBC (Véhicule Blindé de Combat) 6x6 vehicles of several variants, supplementing the 1er CdM with amphibious motorized vehicles. They are expected to contain several mortar carriages and anti-tank variants as well, but will mostly serve an amphibious assault purpose. Aviation aboard the Merdemoiselle is purported to consist of the AMI Pantheré (Aérospatiale Marine Industrielle) light assault helicopter and the AMI Dépliant medium logistics helicopter; both of which have been in service for some time now.

The Noble Parliament also suggested that a peace conference may be held at a later date to discuss the transgressions taking place in Mederum at this time. Princess Amilessi Fléau Côpetia III has also affirmed this is her wish for the region to achieve a peace desirable by all parties. Dialogues with the Novus Concordia Accords states and Sovereign States League are expected to initiate soon.

Sanjari Archprince Misharu Reported Dead
Wednesday, January 14, 391 A.C.
Image
Image

ARSLAN, SANJAR — The Sanjari Ministry of State has announced the death of Archprince Misharu following an unspecified 'incident' in the Eshtar/Great Qarik Desert.

The Archprince was considered one of the most powerful men in Sanjar, holding effective control of the Western Theatre Army, which was assigned to the invasion of Qarik. The F.S. Department of State responded to suspicions and accusations from various parties regarding the act, denying that Euphemie had any role in the death of Misharu.

With his death, the title of Archprince falls into a contested spot among the rather massive Sanjari royal family, which may cause a precarious situation considering the nation's strongman, Emperor Harsu I is currently in Etoile Marin for diplomatic purposes.

Union Embassy in Sanjar to cooperate with Sanjari military on Princess Apuulluunideeszu investigation
Image

The Union Embassy in Sanjar, at 21:30pm yesterday, has been ordered to cooperate with the Sanjari military for investigation regarding the recent disappearance of Princess Apuulluunideeszu. Who were kidnapped by unknown forces on the 14th of January and, by the belief of the Sanjari authority, hidden in the Union Embassy.

"We have nothing to hide, nor fear about the incident. The Embassy and the Sanjari investigators will sort out the misunderstanding between us and the Sanjari authority at once." the spokesperson said on the press conference today.

"It is not an act of submission or weakness, but simply a logical response to prove our innocence in something we didn't do, and won't do."

Union Protector Shen Xuewen, currently preparing for the NCA-SSL conference in Etoile Marin, commented that there is neither motive nor possibility for Tangaliro to kidnap a member of the Sanjari nobility, and warned against any foreign elements conspiring to undermine the relationship between the Union and the rightful regime of Sanjar that they are gonna fail.

At the end of the press conference, the Council spokesperson has also expressed condolence to the Harsu family over the death of Misharu on behalf of the Tangaliroan authority, wishing him to be able to find peace in his the spiritual realm after having served his country for his whole life.

Acasian Military Deploys Against Sanjar

WRITTEN BY: Neculai Alecsandri
DATE: Ianuarie 22 391 A.C.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Two days ago on the twentieth of January, Acasia's Northern Strike Force under Rear
Admiral Alexandru Butacu, who has since been promoted to Admiral for his except-
ional ability to defeat an enemy superior in numbers and weapons, launched an
attack upon Sanjar's navy in the Jade Sea. With the overwhelming firepower of the
Acasian air force behind him, Rear Admiral Butacu was able to destroy seven
enemy vessels and damage a greater number. Following their defeat, the Sanjari
navy fled to Tangaliran waters where they were apparently taken in for questioning
by Tangaliran authorities and to then be repatriated to Sanjar.

Acasian military spokesmen commented after the battle that supposedly Akhmanari
air force squadrons were expected to take part but did not engage the Sanjari ships
until after the battle had concluded and they were fleeing towards Tangaliro - and
even then, they only damaged one Sanjari destroyer, the ISH Zambiya (DDG-24).

Prior to the strike, the member-states of the Novus Concordia Accords voted on the
top of launching it. Acasia received enough gestures of support to carry out the at-
tack, though Tangaliro disapproved of an NCA member performing an attack on Sanjar.

In the aftermath of the battle, with the Jade Sea being clear of enemy naval presence,
the Acasian carrier Sieu deployed to the Jade Sea from it's home port at Ustya and
began launching strikes on strategic & tactical Sanjari military targets.

Euphemie and Acasia Collaborate on Undersea Excavation

WRITTEN BY: Veaceslav Cutovescu
DATE: Ianuarie 27 391 A.C.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————
Acasia's Department of Archaeological Affairs announced today that it had acquired the
funds required to perform an excavation which has been particularly controversial, for
the fact that many feel Acasia does not have the right to be excavating at the site.

The site is the wreck of the Euphemian submarine FSS Kingfish, a ballistic-missile sub
which was reported lost approximately around 6 or 7 A.C. Euphemian archaeologists
have expressed interest in performing an excavation on the site in light of evidence
which suggests that the submarine may have somehow sank without the hull being
compromised in any way. The Acasian research ship Anchetă will be used to bring in
underwater capsules to investigate the wreckage and potentially even send in a
human team of archaeologists to enter inside the Euphemian submarine.

Euphemie Withdraws from Sanjari Territories
Thursday, February 5, 391 A.C.
Image
Image

SERONDEQUOT — President Depeche Stardust announced the Federal States of Euphemie would withdraw from Sanjar following their resounding success in crippling the western offensive and 'upholding the invaluable defense of Qarik'. The decision is perceived as being in accordance with Euphemian promises not to invade Sanjar. Pro-Aenaran groups have denounced Euphemie's decision to withdraw, pushing for an Euphemian-Aenaran joint invasion of Sanjar. The Department of State has declined that the Federal States of Euphemie has any intention of invading or conducting 'regime change' in Sanjar.

However, Secretary of Defense Daniel J.D.T.E. Boingo, at a press conference regarding Euphemian withdrawal, also stated that Euphemie would aid its allies in Sanjar whereever necessary.

EFFECTS OF MANAEAN REBEL RAID STILL EVIDENT
WEDNESDAY, FEB 4, 391 A.C.

SIELIA, MANAE — The effects of a raid on the home of a Manaean military officer and destruction of an Aenaran armored platoon are evident, as more and more militants from the rebel group El-Hadhai pour into the city of Sielia.

Last month, the known Aenaran collaborationist and alleged human rights violator Givan Zaed, a Major in the Manaean Security Forces (MSF) and someone who held great power in Sielia, was found dead in his garage after a fierce gunfight with El-Hadhai rebels outside of his estate in Sielia. An after action report conducted the following morning by MSF and Aenaran advisers concluded that he apparently died in his car, several bullet holes covering his closed garage door and the front windshield of his personal vehicle.

Outside of Sielia, in the popular tourist destination of Karena's Ocean bordering Akhmanar and Manae, an Aenaran armored tank platoon was completely destroyed by El-Hadhai forces assisted by what appeared to be mercenaries. One of the notable deaths include Captain Halled "Hall" Maccabeus, an Aenaran tank commander.

Since the death of Major Zaed's assassination, Sielia has been repeatedly attacked by El-Hadhai forces in an event that has been known as the "Siege of Sielia." El-Hadhai have taken advantage of the void in power ever since the Major's death, as well as the killing of the Aenaran tank platoon, to further their advance into Manae with their newfound morale.

A bounty was placed on the mercenaries responsible for the destruction of the platoon by Aenaran forces, as well as the alleged assassin of Zaed, who is also believed to be a mercenary, though their origins are as of yet unknown. A representative from the Akhmanar Armed Forces has denied all Akhmanari association with the mercenaries supposedly supporting the El-Hadhai.

Demonstrations across southern Red Pine against Alvimian Occupation
Friday, February 20, 391 A.C.
Image
Image

MIDFORT — Almost 900,000 people took to the streets Thursday night against the Alvimian government in a historical demonstration against the occupation. The incident occurred after the Alvimian royal government announced it had raised its 30,000 settler quota in the region to 70,000. Euphemian citizens living in the occupied territories, in opposition to the regime's attempt to, in the words of deceased resistance activist Barry Walker, "wipe them from existence", have taken to the streets of Midfort, Manning and other nearby urban areas in opposition to the Alvimian government.

The Euphemian Workers' Union, in solidarity with the demonstrations, announced Friday morning they were to enact a general strike. While no official response from the Alvimian government has been delivered, various officials within D. Pedro XVI's government condemned the demonstrations as "gringo rabblerousing" and "illegal protest".

President Depeche Stardust, on the other hand, has announced that the citizens of Red Pine, whether they live under federal authority or are south of the occupation border, are 'Euphemian citizens', and their interests will be upheld accordingly. This has led to a significant uproar in Congress among the opposing National Republicans, who had in past decades attempted to pursue a policy of detente with the Kingdom of Alvimia.

The Free State Army, which has operated in Alvimia for the past two centuries, is reportedly experiencing a surge of new membership. The group of pro-Euphemian freedom fighters has experienced a general upward trend in recent years, as it came to a compromise with the splinter groups, the Provisional Free State Army, the New National Free State Army, the National Free State Army, the True Free State Army and the Red Pine Reunification Army.

While the Euphemian federal government has no ties to the Free State Army, it has often been accused of supplying the guerrilla organization by the Alvimian press. NGOs operating in the contested region expressed fears and concerns regarding a potential conflict between the two groups, due to the citizens of Red Pine holding a long-standing hatred of the Alvimian occupation.

Naval Clash in the Henderson Approach

WRITTEN BY: Jen Yana
DATE: February 6th, 391 A.C.

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————
In the early morning hours, the naval forces of the New Aenaran Republic and the Republic
of Siedunland traded blows southeast of Cabul. After a series of skirmishing engagements,
both fleets withdrew to their home ports, continuing to contest the sea zones directly
adjacent to their coasts. Both sides received a noticeable amount of losses, but retain
ocean-going capability. In the aftermath of the engagement, the Aenaran First and Second
Armies have been placed on full alert, with the reserve Third Army beginning mobilization efforts.

New Year War: Tensions with Rebellious Territories reach its Climax
Zhang Ping, People's Daily
14:18, February 22, 391 AC (UPDATED)

Image
PICTURE: Two ZTZ-70 MBTs of the People's Revolutionary Army Ground Forces in the Westernmost part of Qinzhou Province

CHIYANG (People's Daily) - The tensions between the Sinican government with the various rebellious cliques throughout the nation have reached its peak after the 9th and 11th Mechanized Infantry Division of the People's Revolutionary Army Ground Forces (PRAGF) were mobilized to the westernmost part of Qinzhou province and were positioned near the parts of the province which are currently under occupation by rebel groups.

The following day, the Popburo made a public statement that the rationale behind the mobilization of two mechanized infantry divisions to the area was for the purpose of the consolidation of order within Qinzhou Province, a province which currently has two separate territories in an active state of rebellion, commonly referred to as "Tianlei Clan" and "Jubian Tianguo" respectively. Additionally, the Popburo cited the One Sinica Law as part of the justification of the mobilization, referring to the very acts of rebellion as "a violation of Sinican law."

Tensions between the Sinican government and the separatist states began after Chen Ziqing, the general secretary of the National Collectivist People's Party of Da Liang (NCPPD) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, promulgated the National Unification Promotion Law of the People’s Republic of Sinica, which is commonly known as the One Sinica Law, after it passed as the 6th Session of the 3rd People's Collective Congress back in November 13, 375.

Two days after the Popburo's public statement, Chairman Chen issued a one-week ultimatum to both of the de facto governments of the Tianlei Clan" and Jubian Tianguo to cease their active rebellion against the Sinica and to capitulate to the Sinican government. The Chairman stated that "the most rational and pragmatic decision for the rebels to take would be the compliance to the rule of law which governs the land of Sinica, as it will benefit both sides and prevent damages to both parties."

Anti-Democratic Leader Jailed In Successful UIN Raid

TUYAL, SOUTHERN DAIMIEL --- Citizens in the city of Tuyal are celebrating in the streets, and across the entire country, following the capture and arrest of notorious anti-democratic politician and terrorist Hernan Campos. The arrest represents great strides in the fight against terrorism and anti-democratic values, as Campos was one of the most prominent anti-democratic politicians in the country and the leader of the banned Liberal Democrat Party, which aims to establish an authoritarian dictatorship while masquerading as a moderate liberal party. The party, which was banned in 386, had campaigned underground while under the leadership of Campos, who has also been linked to a number of crimes including illegal protesting and assaulting law enforcement officers.

The raid by the National Intelligence Unit (UIN), which had been investigating the case for months, took place in the early hours of the morning and led to the arrest of seven others from a Liberal Democrat safehouse in rural Tuyal, which was filled with evidence that the party was planning further campaigns from the location. Campos, and the other lower ranking prisoners, have been brought back to a maximum security prison in Camilea for holding, for a trial scheduled for next month. Because of the terrorism charges, the maximum punishment could be execution by firing squad.

"The capture of someone like Hernan Campos is a victory for the democratic principles of this nation and will help to protect the hearts and minds of our people and our children," said General Secretary of the United Front Coalition for the Independence of Daimiel Macario Alvarado, in a short address to the public on the afternoon following the capture. "Do not be fooled by Campos' attempts to say that we need to be more democratic or that we don't have democracy. That is simply propaganda. We have democracy right now, and people such as Campos simply wish to establish authoritarianism."

Aenaran Govt Website Hacked
Tuesday, February 10, 391 A.C.

OLYMPIAD — The website of the Aenaran FLC agency was hacked this Monday by an anonymous group.

The website was hacked this morning by an anonymous hacker or group of hackers who did so with the intention of spreading a message appearing to denounce President Atton Rand and his supporters, referring to leaked images distributed by the Siedunlander military yesterday appearing to show missile launchers being installed on top of skyscrapers in the city of Cabul, currently under attack by Siedunland.

The vandalism was quickly reversed in under ten minutes, but information on those responsible for the attack is unavailable, except for that they are opposed to President Rand.

AURUM, D.F. — A fight between PTR and PDA congressmen caused Alvimia's congress to close early, the physical altercation demanding the intervention of the Royal Vanguard to seize those involved and apprehend them temporarily. The fight arose from a dispute regarding vote counts, to which both sides had accused one another of filing invalid and fraudulent ballots.

Turmenistanian Animation: A Burgeoning Industry?

ARCADIA — The Euphemian state of Turmenista seems to constantly strive towards individual and unique approaches. Record viewership was noted for the debut of Turmenistanian animated television series 'Angel Underground', a total of 13 million views. The television series seems to have attracted positive attention from audiences both domestic and foreign due to its mixture of comedy, horror and action.

The television series follows ordinary high school student Claire Moore, whose daily life in Arcadia is suddenly turned upside-down with the invasion of an ant-like alien species called the 'Formicids'. The protagonist, through a compromise with a being called the Demiurge, becomes an 'Angel' and becomes Tsion's last hope against the alien menace.

The National Republican-backed conservative advocacy group, the Family Telescreen Committee, condemned the show's lavish displays of violence, gore and sexual themes. Despite this, however, the show seems to have an incredibly high viewership among youth, according to the Department of Communications.

Alvimian Congress Descends Into Chaos Amidst Voting

AURUM, D.F. — Just over a week after a fight between congressmen of the PTR and PDA parties in Alvimia's congress culminated in the detainment of eighteen congressmen, tensions have flared again. In the middle of voting for a proposition which would abolish anti-Euphemian segregationist policies, the entirety of the Aliança Nacional walked out of the building without warning. Shortly afterwards, another fight between members of the PTR and PDA began over the topic which resulted in last week's fight, though it did not escalate into a physical fight, members of the government AAGR joined the battle against the PTR, making inflammatory statements against the nation's farmers, including a statement by Congressman Carlos Peres Teixeira where he remarked "If you're too stupid to move to a city, you deserve to be poor!", in regards to which the PTR defended Alvimia's farmers. The brawling ended when the Vanguarda Real entered in larger numbers than they did last time, detained members of all three parties and closed Congress. The exact repercussions of the Aliança Nacional's walkout have not yet been decided upon.

Neworder's Inauguration

SERONDEQUOT — Here is a full transcript of President Neworder's inaugural address.

Supreme Justice Jovi, Mr. President [Stardust], Vice President DauCoin, Senator Lazarus, Speaker Palmer, Senator Ortega, Governor Whitesnake, and fellow citizens, neighbors, and friends. I come here humbled before you all due to the duty the Euphemian voters have affirmed to be our Nation's Manifest Destiny. The transfer of authority is rare in this world, yet common — sacred even — in this great Nation. With a simple oath, we affirm our commitment to the holy process of Euphemian democracy and look forward to the future with hope and aspiration.

There is a man here who has secured a place in our hearts, and most of all — in History for millennia to come. President Stardust, on behalf of our Nation, I thank you for your divine duty to Euphemie. To Governor Strickland, I thank your resolve and contest, conducted with great spirit and ended with benevolent grace.

I am honored and humbled to stand here where so many of Euphemie's holy Presidents have stood before me, and so many will follow. We have a place, all of us, in a neverending story, a story we continue but whose conclusion we will not see. It is a story of a new world that became a friend and liberator of the old, the story of a slaveholding society that became a servant of freedom, the story of a power that went into the world to protect but not possess, to defend but not to conquer.

It is the Euphemian story, a story of flawed and fallible men and women who were united, generations apart, by grand and enduring ideals and aspirations. The grandest of these ideals is a distinctly Euphemian notion that everyone belongs, that everyone deserves a chance, that no insignificant person was ever born.

Through our laws, we bring forth this notion into reality. Though we have halted, toiled, and sometimes delayed — we have persisted in this course without deviation.

Through much of the last century, Euphemie's faith in democratic ideals was a rock in a raging sea. Now it is a seed upon the wind, which will soon take root in many nations beyond our fair shores. Our democratic faith is more than the creed of our country. It is the inborn hope of our humanity, an ideal we carry but do not own, a trust we bear and pass along. Even after nearly 622 years, we have a long way yet to travel.

While many of our citizens prosper, there are others doubt the promise, even the justice of our own country. The ambitions of some Euphemians are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice and the circumstances of their birth. And sometimes our differences run so deep, it seems we share a continent but not a country. We do not accept this, and we will not allow it.

Our unity, our Union, is a serious work of leaders and citizens and every generation. And this is my solemn pledge: I will aspire, I will dream, I will work without hesitation or rest, to enshrine the sacred ideals of liberty and justice under my Administration. I have always believed that Euphemie was set aside in an uncommon way; that a divine will set aside this nation as a city upon a shining hill for a special people with a love for life, liberty and the pursuit of prosperity. We are bound by ideals transcendant of our backgrounds, above our interests. Every immigrant that arrives upon our shores who embraces our sacred values and ideals serve only to make our great Nation more, not less, Euphemian.

I come before you and assume the Presidency at a moment rich with promise. We live in a peaceful, prosperous time, but we can make it better. For a new breeze is blowing, and the world's desire for freedom seems reborn; for in the heart of mankind, the day of the dictator is over. The totalitarian era is passing, its old ideas blown away like leaves from an ancient, lifeless tree. A new breeze is blowing, and a nation refreshed by freedom stands ready to push on. There is new ground to be broken, and new action to be taken. There are times when the future seems thick as a fog; you sit and wait, hoping the mists will lift and reveal the right path. But this is a time when the future seems a door you can walk right through into a better tomorrow.

Great nations of the world aspire toward toward democracy, taking that step through the door towards freedom. Men and women of the world move toward free markets through the door to prosperity. The people of the world agitate for free expression and free thought through the door to the moral and intellectual satisfactions that only liberty allows.

We know what works: Freedom works. We know what's right: Freedom is right. We know how to secure a more just and prosperous life for man on Earth: through free markets, free speech, free elections, and the exercise of free will unhampered by the state.

For the first time in this century, for the first time in perhaps all history, man does not have to invent a system by which to live. We don't have to talk late into the night about which form of government is better. We don't have to wrest justice from the kings. We only have to summon it from within ourselves. We must act on what we know. I take as my guide the hope of a saint: In crucial things, unity; in important things, diversity; in all things, generosity.

Euphemie today stands a proud, free nation, decent and civil, a place we cannot help but love. We know in our hearts, not loudly and proudly, but as a simple fact, that this country has meaning beyond what we see, and that our strength is a force for good. But have we changed as a nation even in our time? Are we enthralled with material things, less appreciative of the nobility of work and sacrifice?

My friends, we are not the sum of our possessions. They are not the measure of our lives. In our hearts we know what matters. We cannot hope only to leave our children a bigger car, a bigger bank account. We must hope to give them a sense of what it means to be a loyal friend, a loving parent, a citizen who leaves his home, his neighborhood and town better than he found it. What do we want the men and women who work with us to say when we are no longer there? That we were more driven to succeed than anyone around us? Or that we stopped to ask if a sick child had gotten better, and stayed a moment there to trade a word of friendship?

No President, no government, can teach us to remember what is best in what we are. But if the man you have chosen to lead this government can help make a difference; if he can celebrate the quieter, deeper successes that are made not of gold and silk, but of better hearts and finer souls; if he can do these things, then he must. Then I must.

Euphemie is never wholly herself unless she engages in her divinely-ordained high moral principles. We as a people have such a purpose today. It is to make kinder the face of the Nation and gentler the face of the world. My friends, we have work to do. There are the homeless, lost and roaming. There are the children who have nothing, no love, no normalcy. There are those who cannot free themselves of enslavement to whatever addiction--drugs, welfare, the demoralization that rules the slums. There is crime to be conquered, the rough crime of the streets. There are young women to be helped who are about to become mothers of children they can't care for and might not love. They need our care, our guidance, and our education, though we bless them for choosing life.

The old solution, the old way, was to think that public money alone could end these problems. But we have learned that is not so. And in any case, our funds are low. We have a deficit to bring down. We have more will than wallet; but will is what we need. We will make the hard choices, looking at what we have and perhaps allocating it differently, making our decisions based on honest need and prudent safety. And then we will do the wisest thing of all: We will turn to the only resource we have that in times of need always grows--the goodness and the courage of the Euphemian people.

I am speaking of a new engagement in the lives of others, a new activism, hands-on and involved, that gets the job done. We must bring in the generations, harnessing the unused talent of the elderly and the unfocused energy of the young. For not only leadership is passed from generation to generation, but so is stewardship. And the generation born after the Second World War has come of age.

I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. We will work hand in hand, encouraging, sometimes leading, sometimes being led, rewarding. We will work on this in Serondequot, in the Cabinet agencies. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in.

We need a new engagement, too, between the Executive and the Congress. The challenges before us will be thrashed out with the Chamber and the Senate. We must bring the Federal budget into balance. And we must ensure that Euphemie stands before the world united, strong, at peace, and fiscally sound. But, of course, things may be difficult. We need compromise; we have had dissension. We need harmony; we have had a chorus of discordant voices.

To my friends--and yes, I do mean friends--in the loyal opposition--and yes, I mean loyal: I put out my hand. I am putting out my hand to you, Governor Strickland. I am putting out my hand to you, Governor Whitesnake. For this is the thing: This is the age of the offered hand. We can't turn back clocks, and I don't want to. But when our fathers were young, Governor, our differences ended at the water's edge. And we don't wish to turn back time, but when our mothers were young, Governor, the Congress and the Executive were capable of working together to produce a budget on which this nation could live. Let us negotiate soon and hard. But in the end, let us produce. The Euphemian people await action. They didn't send us here to bicker. They ask us to rise above the merely partisan. "In crucial things, unity"--and this, my friends, is crucial.

To the world, too, we offer new engagement and a renewed vow: We will stay strong to protect the peace. The "offered hand" is a reluctant fist; but once made, strong, and can be used with great effect. There are today Euphemian citizens--on Euphemian land - who are held against their will in foreign occupation, and Euphemians who are unaccounted for. Assistance will be shown here, and will be long remembered by the world. Good will begets good will. Good faith can be a spiral that endlessly moves on.

Great nations like great men must keep their word. When Euphemie says something, Euphemie means it, whether it be a treaty or an agreement or a vow made on marble steps. We will always try to speak clearly, for candor is a compliment, but subtlety, too, is good and has its place. While keeping our alliances and friendships around the world strong, ever strong, we will also maintain watchful eye upon those that may seek to wish us ill.

Tangaliro has created a 'civilization' that represents an exact contradiction of the sacred Euphemian tradition. It has introduced the religion of praxis and productivity; it has put the quest for profit, great industrial production, and mechanical, visible, and quantitative achievements over any other interest. It has generated a soulless greatness of a purely technological and collective nature, lacking any background of transcendence, inner light, and true spirituality. Tangaliro has built a society where man becomes a mere instrument of production and material productivity within a conformist social conglomerate. They seek only to wish us harm when they aid the enemies of our allies.

Today we affirm a new commitment to live out our Nation's promise to the values of civilization, courage, compassion, and character. Euphemie at its best matches a commitment to principle with a concern for the fate of mankind. A civil society demands from each of us good will and respect, fair dealing and forgiveness. We cannot let our totalitarian opponents dictate the future of life on this planet. Mankind deserves better.

We must live up to the calling we share. Euphemie at its best is also courageous. Our national courage has been clear in times of depression and war, when defeating common dangers defined our common good. Now we must choose if the example of our fathers and mothers will inspire us or condemn us. We must show courage in a time of blessing by confronting problems instead of passing them on to future generations.

Together we will reclaim Euphemie's schools before ignorance and apathy claim more young lives. We will reform Social Security and the Healthcare system, sparing our children from struggles we have the power to prevent. And we will reduce taxes to recover the momentum of our economy and reward the effort and enterprise of working Euphemians.

We will build our defenses beyond challenge, lest weakness invite challenge. We will confront weapons of mass destruction with an empowered, renewed Euphemian arsenal, those who dare bring terror and despair into the New Century will do so knowing the consequences. The enemies of liberty and our country should make no mistake: Euphemie remains engaged in the world, by history, divine destiny and by choice, shaping a balance of power that favors freedom.

We will defend our allies and our interests. We will show purpose without arrogance. We will meet aggression and bad faith with resolve and strength. And to all nations, we will speak for the values that gave our Nation birth.

The years and changes accumulate, but the themes of this day are fair and true: those of our Nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.

We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with purpose. Yet, this purpose is achieved in our duty. And our duty is fulfilled in service to one another. Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life. This work continues, the story goes on, and an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm — for Euphemians are embodied with great spirit, a spirit I intend to uphold in my Administration. We will choose the hardest road, we will fight to the death even when all is already lost — if it means justice. And so, there is much to do; and tomorrow the work begins. I do not mistrust the future; I do not fear what lay ahead for our sacred Nation. For our problems are large, but our spirit is larger. Our challenges are great, but our will is greater. And if our flaws are endless, then the love of God is without bounds.

The basic aspirations of the Euphemian Destiny are not mere abstractions, far removed from matters of daily living. They are laws of spiritual strength that generate and define our material strength. It is for this reason that, as my Administration's first action and sacred duty to its people, I announce the Federal military's intentions to bring about nothing short of reunification. No person, no home, no community can be beyond the reach of this call. We, and our brothers south of the border, are summoned to act in wisdom and in conscience, to work with industry, to teach with persuasion, to preach with conviction, to weigh our every deed with care and with compassion. For this truth must be clear before us: whatever Euphemie hopes to bring to pass in the world must first come to pass in the heart of Euphemie.

The peace we seek, then, is nothing less than the practice and fulfillment of our whole faith among ourselves and in our dealings with others. This signifies more than the stilling of guns, casing the sorrow of war. More than escape from death, it is a way of life. More than a haven for the weary, it is a hope for the brave.

This is the hope that beckons us onward in this century of trial. This is the work that awaits us all, to be done with bravery, with charity, and with prayer to Almighty God.

God bless you all, and God bless Euphemie.
