E.U. Imposes Sanctions on Iran Over Assassination Plots

Postby Sneudal » Wed Jan 09, 2019 7:52 pm

The European Union penalized Iran on Tuesday over allegations that the country’s intelligence service orchestrated a series of assassination plots in Europe in recent years, including the killing of two Iranians in the Netherlands with ties to anti-government extremist groups.

In a letter outlining its justification for sanctions, the Dutch Foreign Ministry cited “strong indications that Iran was involved in the assassinations of two Dutch nationals of Iranian origin,” one in 2015 in the city of Almere and another in 2017 in The Hague.

European intelligence officials have also linked the Iranian government to unsuccessful plots in Denmark and France.

“In the Dutch government’s opinion, hostile acts of this kind flagrantly violate the sovereignty of the Netherlands and are unacceptable,” the letter said.

What do you think of this? Do you think it is the right move of the E.U.?

Personally i don't think it's right. Ofcourse Iran wants justice done to them, and it knows very well that the E.U. won't extradite them due to the death penalty, and thus they choose to take them out in another way. Now surely assassinating other people on foreign soil (or home soil for that matter) is not okay, but what i find far worse is the fact that the E.U. is harboring, and now also effectively protecting well known terrorists.

I wonder how the Iranians will react to this. What will their excuse be this time?

None really.

In response, Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, did not deny the allegations, but accused European countries in a Twitter post of harboring militants from the Mujahedeen Khalq, or M.E.K., a group that seeks the violent overthrow of the Iranian government.

Sweet, we now live in a world where we accept governments killing people anywhere they like because, really, there's nothing anyone can do to really stop them.

Well sure, but not generally so brazenly and for the general public to be so blasé about it.

Eh, have you already forgotten about the U.S. (and many other countries) hunting down terrorists in (among others) the Middle-East, or Israel hunting down scientists who happen to work for countries of which the names start with 'Ira'? Or does the Middle-East not belong to that world you were talking about?

Stop being dumb Iran. Trump is giving you perfect cover to lay low and make nice with Europe as the reasonable ones being put upon by a flailing man-child who wants to look tough. Is picking off a few dissident ex-pats really more important than normalizing trade and economic cooperation with Europe?

So what did those guys actually do, aside from being members of an organisation we used to call terrorist, but are now buddies with Trump and therefor fine ?

Bomb a school ? Shoot a cop ? Write nasty letters about the president ? What ?

The Mossad's been doing this since the early '60s. There have been no shortage of high profile cases.

A few have even been made into movies.

Well, that is up to Turkey, since it happened on their soil.
This happened on EU soil, so the EU imposes sanctions.

This is just like arguing that the U.S. should've improved relations with Afghanistan after 9/11 instead of starting to hunt for those responsible...

One of those killed in the Netherlands is widely believed to be the mastermind behind a terrorist attack that left 73 people dead (Dutch source, i'm afraid i couldn't find an English one that fast). The other one was the leader of a seperatist movement that has regularly committed terrorist attacks in Iran.

I'm not 100% sure on those attempts in France or Denmark, though i've read that one of those in Denmark was believed to be responsible for the attack on the Iranian military parade last year.

None are proven as far as i know, and reading this (It's in Dutch though) only confirms that nothing has been proven. It includes terms like 'almost certain' and 'strong clues'.

It is though, as his point was that Iran should just let it go. Same could be applied to the U.S.. Both suffered from terrorist attacks, and both didn't let it go and hunted down those responsible. Iran is no different from the U.S. in that regard.

I'm glad they refused to join the U.S. in their blindful hatred against Iran, as in the end Iran is no different from other countries. Still is the case even with these assassination plots.

It isn't though. The two examples are like comparing apples and oranges. The military and economic circumstances in each are entirely different.

Apparently we live in an alternate reality. Anyways, has anyone made a thread yet about the Swiss assassination attempt on the New Zealand Prime Minister over sheep wool competitiveness?

Both are completely unrelated though. It's about the message here, not the race and gender of the messenger.

Ah yes, let's coincidentally forget about Israel, Russia, Saudi-Arabia, the U.S., the U.K., France etc. etc.
