And for that purpose, for a brighter future, we must make another change. The United States must respect the choices of the nations of the Middle East-and the choice of her people. As the slow steps of recovery are made, we must not decide the course that they take, but those who are there, in the lands rocked by war, the survivors of the tumult, they must maintain that right. If society is to be changed, by the will of the people, not of dictators or strongmen, but the freely expressed will of the citizenry, then we will respect it. If the maps are to be redrawn, not by international powers or conquest of war, but by the independent and sovereign choices of the people who make those lands their home, then it is our responsibility not to interfere, but to support, as a global community, the right of self-determination that all possess. When aid is requested, we will look to provide it within our means, seeking to advance, not our interests, but the democratic process-yet the choice is not to be made in Washington, nor in New York, nor Brussels, but here, by those who are affected by it

Every foreign policy person everywhere is gonna see this as coming out in support of a Kurdish independence referendum

I would not be surprised if this RP ends with Greece doubling its borders after an invasion of Turkey

Reed actually may have just seriously undermined his entire middle east policy and created an even bigger problem

The Turks, if anything, have held back some support of the Islamic State because of the United States. A complete withdrawl, coupled with a new enemy in Turkey, could lead to an ISIS resurgence quicker than anticipated.

Well we might be calling Istanbul Constantinople again if that happens.

0% chance people like Brennan do not call for war against Turkey

I imagine that this will become quite a flashpoint indeed.

Part of the matter rests on Reed not sufficiently understanding the depths of the situation with Turkey in particular. For the response of others, Iraq included, the expectations are generally settled, but the complexities of the situation there exceed him.

There is, however, quite a second level to what has just been engineered that is not publicly known. That more covert aspect was one quite long in planning, though unfortunately left fully to the background after out-of-character issues.
