And for that purpose, for a brighter future, we must make another change. The United States must respect the choices of the nations of the Middle East-and the choice of her people. If the maps are to be redrawn, not by international powers or conquest of war, but by the independent and sovereign choices of the people who make those lands their home, then it is our responsibility not to interfere, but to support, as a global community, the right of self-determination that all possess. When aid is requested, we will look to provide it within our means, seeking to advance, not our interests, but the democratic process-yet the choice is not to be made in Washington, nor in New York, nor Brussels, but here, by those who are affected by it
