2020 US Presidential Election Megathread I- It Begins

Postby Republicanana » Mon Dec 31, 2018 8:59 am

Today, Elizabeth Warren has announced her exploratory committee to run for President in 2020. Already, two virtual unknowns such as John Delaney (other than people in MD and political junkies) and Richard Ojeda (other than people in WV, especially WV teachers, plus same political junkies) are officially in the race. Julian Castro will be making his plans known on Jan. 12 in Texas. So, with all of the Democrats getting ready to run, plus the rumors of a GOP primary challenge to President Trump and even Jesse Ventura maybe as a Green, I think it is time to start the megathreads that will grace this forum for the next two years.

I'll write a substantial post after I find out this thread won't be closed.

Here's a short one: I'd love it if either Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren run, I'd vote for either, I just hope both of them don't run, cause if the progressive vote is split then a corporate Dem will win.

Can't we at least get one year without having to deal with an election just once in my life!?

I am hoping they don't close it, I was planning on making a megathread as soon as some serious contenders started making official moves, which we got today.

Sanders is the stronger general candidate imo. If he runs, Warren should respectfully bow out and coordinate efforts.

You have one big name declared. I would've waited for at least three.

Sure the constant election speculation really wears thin, but on the other hand the results of this election will have a huge impact on America and the entire world.

I was wanting to get the head start as it sounds like a good bit of candidates might declare next month.

I'm eagerly anticipating if any Republican will dare a serious primary attempt against Trump.

I hear that John Kasich is probably going to run as an independent. He has some pretty scathing words for the republicans apparently saying that if the party can’t be fixed he won’t support it.

He also voted against his state parties "heartbeat" abortion ban, and some other law (Some did get overridden with a veto proof majority)

Not surprised about Warren.

I respect her career as a former crusader for Consumer Protection, as well as her career as a policymaker. What I don't respect is her obtuse grandstanding this last year or so - it's become obnoxious, and politically, it's shot her in the foot.

I know Castro also has formed an exploratory committee. I'm neutral on him - I think that he may be a little on the inexperienced side, perhaps also too opportunistic, but I don't know of any major policy points on which he and I would vehemently disagree.

I think that there are potentially some terrible choices for the Dems in 2020, and potentially some incredible choices. Just hoping the DNC stays as neutral as possible for the primaries.

Yeah, this strikes me as premature in the sense that it'll be a lot more telling if everybody we expect to run jumps in over the next month, or if some surprising passes happen. It's also hard to game out candidates' strengths and weaknesses when the field hasn't filled out yet.

Of those currently declared? I like Liz Warren, but she's a paper tiger. Even on paper, there are obvious vulnerabilities and on the stump her style is going to come across as "condescending." Neither Castro nor Ojeda have any real business running for president, but they can if they want to.

Of those undeclared, Biden is the most interesting to watch. He may be more effective as a kingmaker than as a candidate, and I think he knows that. Of course, he wants to run for president, so there's that too. The party's smartest bet will be to go with a candidate who has some working executive experience, is relatively new, and can run credibly on ethics -- both in the primary and then as a seamless pivot to the general.

I’m just over here quietly hoping for either Klobuchar or Brown to run.

He might be, but his age is his biggest problem, given he'll be 78 and questions of his health will arise. The same problem arises with Biden as well. I think if they find someone that's young and has a mix of Sanders/Biden/Obama (or whatever combinations there are), they'll succeed.

Klobuchar is an interesting choice, and one that I'm actually considering. But on the whole, I'd rather not have a congress critter. Those seats are worth their weight in gold.

Klobuchar is immensely popular in Minnesota and has proven to be an effective Senator. Her electability aside, which I believe is high, she’d also likely be an effective and conciliatory President.

MN also leans Blue, I’m sure a hypothetical 2020 Special Election for her seat wouldn’t be particularly competitive.

That's sort of like hoping for snow in hell, I'm certainly not getting my hopes up. I have a feeling the DNC will push for a candidate who "gets it", and by "gets it", I mean someone who gets that the President has to do the bidding of Goldman Sachs, big pharma, the oil lobby, and the military industrial complex.
