[TWI-ONLY] Dimen Velum li(Toroman Trade Empire)

Postby Torom » Fri Dec 21, 2018 1:26 am

Hello everyone. Now that I have free time, I'd like to start up on something that I've been thinking of but never really worked in-depth on until now! May I present the Dimen Velum li!(or just Government of the Ocean in translation)

This is a fun little discussion thread for historical planning, and you're open to give ideas for interaction, fun stuff, and more. This thread is mainly a way to keep any ideas or suggestions that I will definitely forget.

Dispatch: https://www.nationstates.net/page=dispatch/id=1145710

So now, first of all:

What is the Dimen Velum li?
The Dimen Velum li is the Toroman trade empire lasting from the 1300s until around the mid-1600s. Unlike typical empires or expansion projects, these territories are not for the sake of acquiring more resources or prestige, but to expand influence on trade and naval security in the time period. Any holdings would be little more than poclets of settlements and cities along with their surrounding areas being guaranteed 'trade protection' from the numerous merchant republics and later the Kingdom of Lemov. This trade protection was both legitimate and in the form of fluke bombardments and blockades on cities.

How far does it spread?
I plan for it reach across the Western portion of the Southern Sea from small areas in Eastern Argus to the Southern coasts of Western Gael and the I.D., and mainly the few islands in the Western Southern Sea. These areas will likely be quite detached where multiple pockets of land can be separated by just one little patch of land or a hill, but it's not necessarily like that.

Is this thread just a way for you to gain territory for this empire?
Absolutely. Now give clay.

Tentative territories(unconfirmed):
Southern coast and islands of I.D.

Hello again, rival.

Isn't this the time frame when Toroman Reconquista against Helambu and Asahan hangates take place?

It would take place around the 13-1400s so pretty early. I planned that by 1421, unification will be complete.

On another note, the dispatch is ready.

You definitely have me involved in this, dear ally.

From 1373 (with the beginning of the Alliance) and 1707, you can have two (or more) major settlements for your (as you named it) Dara Tonarai.

I was thinking it could start off as trade posts, made up of garrisons, merchant enclaves, and merchant ports. Over the centuries, the garrisons would grow into castles, and the merchant enclaves would grow into cities. Over a few more centuries of getting rich off trade, the castles would transform into grand family palaces.

This would also be how the Levoman Townsiders come about (your bastard cousins). They'd settle in the merchant enclaves, and later the cities. They'd come to occupy most of western Townisde, and co-exist peacefully with the Ainur Townsiders.

I'm cool with that.

Especially since I kind of conquered it.

You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention. How can I get in on this?

I should also like to get involved, as about this time the Lortik Empire was more or less a vassal state of the Second Khas Kirati Empire.

I have two ideas:
  • Lortik corsairs raiding Torom’s commerce (Resolved however, I would like piracy though)
  • And, if Torom and AM are interested, a minor trade struggle/war over pirate mercenaries, over conflicts in trade, especially of ship timber, and perhaps an India-esque conflict involving local rivalries taking colonial sides (AM wins?)

I remember posting on here a while back, but I plan to use the EEI's rivalry with your trade empire as the catalyst for the Empire's expansion into the Southern Sea, not to mention we still need to flesh out the Tensin Trail.

Sorry, but you're quite too far to be involved, being all the way in the north, and in your nationbuilding I've noticed you use names from IRL and fantasy. If you have some way to reason to be involved in the Southern Sea at all during the 1400s-1600s, do tell, but may I suggest some revising of somethings especially your names. They feel too all over the place and confusing, so just tell me if you got anything.

That sounds nice. Hopefully AM's in on it.

Yeah, all the tags just disappeared all of a sudden. Mods maybe did something.

Anyways, that would be a good idea, but sounds like something better discussed in the Southern Sea Trade Wars thread(if it's still alive), but we can talk here on the Tensin Trail. What do u need to ask?

Below is my idea.

Since the early 1300s, Lortik corsairs, when not off fighting Magarati wars, had plundered far and wide, including off the coast of Torom. As the wealth and prosperity of the Demin Velum Li increased, these raids became more and more frequent, until Torom decided to act, in ____ (preferably around the early 1500s). A Demin fleet sailed to the port of Stagsted, where the house of Alfwine ruled, and defeated the Lortik fleet that sallied forth. With the burning of Stagsted threatened, the king surrendered the city, and was surprised by the ‘easy’ terms, which he signed, giving Torom a preferential trade deal.
Having established a foothold, and a base of operations against Lortik pirate’s nests, the Dmien Velum Li prospered even more, and slowly began buying out other Lortik ports, including the future capital of Gloria. They also establish a favourable trade relationship with the Kingdom of Angers, and managed to play of the Lortiks and Angers to their advantage.
However, as Lortik corsairs saw their ships and livelihoods sunk by aggressive Toroman fleets, they banded together. In the Great Pirate Battle of (date), a massive fleet of Lortik Corsairs fought a similarly large Toroman fleet to a draw. The Demin Velum Li agreed to stop harassing the corsairs in exchange for immunity. The seas around the Ilse were peaceful again… until the Khas-Kirati arrived.
Athara Magarat, in a similar fashion to Torom, albeit much more quickly, had also been establishing trade relations with Lortiks. Khas-Kirati officials began issuing letters of marque to Lortik corsairs who would hunt Toroman ships. Eventually one such ship was captured and war was inevitable. Both Torom and AM called on Lortik allies, and a number of bloody battles were fought throughout the interior of the Ilse. Eventually, the Lortik Overking cast his lot with Athara Magarat, and Lortik-Magarati armies expelled the Toromans from every port in Lortika. Torom watched its resources decline, and quickly discovered the with powerful combined Lortik-Magarati fleets, it could no longer win.
As a result of the war, many Lortik nobles fled to, and Athara Magarat established Lortika as within its sphere of influence. Only the kingdom of Angers maintained ties with Torom, and these did bring nearly as much wealth as the Lortik ports, for often such goods were sold through the Kingdom of Angers to Lortika itself, which had banned ships from Torom.

Sorry for the inaccurate names; I mostly just used nation names but I assume y’all will know which government/nation is appropriate. Also, I am not sure what the dates should be. Barnimer was colonised by the Chatha in 1671, so that seems like a good deadline which all events should end before, since Magarati dominance would have to have been complete before it could annex a southern portion of the Ilse.

Neat! If Torom agrees, I am fine with all of these :)
