National descriptors unrelated to policies installed?

Postby Great Varia » Sat Dec 29, 2018 8:34 pm

Nothing urgent but it's been mildly bugging me how my nation is described on its page bc I'm not 100% sure how I got it. From what I've casually heard from others, not all policies generate descriptors and not all descriptors are based on policies installed. I'm specifically talking about three descriptors of what a given nation is "renowned/known/notable for" portion such as: The Democratic Republic of Great Varia is a small, environmentally stunning nation, notable for its state-planned economy, free-roaming dinosaurs, and absence of drug laws.

The only issues currently put in place in my nation are Socialism, Euthanasia, Cannabis, Gun Control, and No WMDs. And most of such descriptors seem to fit perfectly into these issues like "state-planned economy" corresponding to socialism and likewise "absence of drug laws" to cannabis. But I'm trying to figure out how I got three descriptors specifically: "free-roaming dinosaurs", "irreverence towards religion", and "stringent health and safety regulation". I don't hate them tbh and if anything they do sound realistically like a nation I would build; I'm just curious of the general mechanics and how I ended up with them bc they don't seem to perfectly match the other existing policies. Would anyone care to enlighten this newcomer?

My best guess would be that the dinosaurs are a result of my environmental preservation-leaning choices in solving issues while the latter two descriptors are, at least in part, related to the Euthanasia policy plus other irreligion- plus healthcare-related issue decisions I made.

The game tracks some flags internally that aren't displayed on the policy page (and conversely, some policies on the policy page aren't true flags but are decided based on your stats, which has been observed to often cause questional behavior in receiving or losing those policies). The national descriptors draw on some of those internal flags (and stats) that aren't displayed elsewhere, but that, to the game itself, are equally valid.

The dinosaurs are almost certainly due to explicitly choosing to bring back the dinosaurs with #474, and/or one of its followup issues about what to do with those dinosaurs (seems unlikely that merely putting them in zoos would lead to "free-roaming"). The other two descriptors you asked about seem likely to be stat-based, but I have no way of knowing for sure. I really wish the API had a q=notables shard.

It's not easily convertible to an API call because those labels are each individually buried inside layers of logic. There's no simple pool of strings we can make available.
