if it is real, then is great. in my country, there is nothing quite as this (it means the public spending goes, whatever licit or not, while it has been voted, or not).

There are articles available on most major news sites that list the specific departments that are closed, but it includes (but not limited to): the IRS, national parks, and housing. Payment of salary for some other departments will also be delayed.

The IRS is closed?

If the taxation system remains closed for too long...

The main immediate problem at least is that tax queries are not answered at all, rather than cash flow difficulties.

I should've expected so..

Dealing with tax-related citizen concerns? That shit's too unimportant.

But keeping the money flowing in? I most certainly should've expected they'd keep that open.

illegal immigration is clearly a problem

Please in the new poll, for if the government will be still shutdown tomorrow at 12:01 AM EST. 94% of you were right in saying it would still be shutdown today.

Did you miss the part where Dems approved 1.6 billion dollarydoos to increase security and the whole argument that the wall would be disastrously ineffective?

There is already a vast network of tunnels, and I heard there is this futuristic invention called the ladder.

Even if Trump got a wall of metal spikes like he wants, then he runs into the problem that the entire border is not flat terrain, so a wall from end to end is a geographic impossibility. That is, unless he wants to build the wall further inland, thus ceding American land to Mexico.

We don't need a study to see what a stupid waste of time and money this would be.

Part of the border between the US and Mexico is the Rio Grande river, as defined by treaty. Obviously enough you can't build a fence or a wall on the bank of a river, it'd fall over.

The other borders include the US border with Canada, the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, with the World's largest navy patrolling them, and there's also the Arctic Ocean, but Polar Bears have yet to manifest a major threat.

Are you expecting Congress to do effective studies? Love your optimism. Congress has commissioned a study on quails having sex while high on cocaine, and another on the effect of leaf blowers on lizards. They don't have time for this border wall stuff! (I recommend reading Rand Paul's Twitter Festivus, whole damn thing's hilarious)

Leaf blowers on lizards. What the fuck are we doing

Science.

And people wonder why we don't have the money to spend on actual priorities like the wall and infrastructure.

You don't spend money on walls or infrastructure because you don't want to, not because you have no money left after funding scientific research.

I was entirely expecting an unironic repeat of my own solution of copying the Berlin Wall in regards to the Irish border, just applied to the Mexican border instead.

Are you blissfully ignoring where Democrats do want border security. Plain and simple, the wall won't work. Time and time again, we've been saying most illegal immigrants enter the nation legally then overstay their visas.

I propose we build a dome over every airport and make Elon Musk pay for it.

There are ways around that if absolutely necessary. By itself a river isn't an insurmountable problem, though any solution would likely prove to be expensive. Also, I'm not sure what wall builders plan on doing with the Falcon Reservoir.

But let's say, for the sake of discussion, that the solution to the Rio Grande consists of building the wall a bit back from the river, which has the advantage of shortening the route by lessening the impact of meanders as well as resolving some of the river shore engineering issues. On the face of it, this seems sensible. But I would have thought an even more serious problem is that much of the immediate hinterland of the Rio Grande, especially in southern Texas, is prime agricultural land; any attempt to build a wall through these stretches would require precisely the sort of exercise of eminent domain that many members of the president's natural voting constituency would presumably find deeply problematic.

It's almost as if nobody knew that building a wall could be so complicated.

The Rio Grande is somewhat of a death trap. A lot of these illegals don't know how to swim well, but attempt to traverse the Rio Grande anyway. Many of them drown. I read a story a few days ago about how a Border Agent risked his own life saving one of the idiots from drowning in the middle of the night.

And there is clear historical precedent of being able to do it as well. The Inner German Border and Berlin Wall had several sections that intersected the Elbe, the Saale, and the Werra, and most of the time the solution was just a combination of placing the wall on the nearest stable riverbank on the East German side, and using boats to patrol the rest of the territory "sacrificed" to make the barrier feasible.

You would deport people back to a country they have never known, dont speak the language, dont know the culture, have no connections to whatsoever? Thats truly and utterly heartless

You cannot deport 11 million people its simply impractical.

Merit based immigration? So only the best of the best can come in? anyone and everyone else sorry you born in the wrong circumstances or country and slam the door.

We have thread for this in the diversity/multiculturism thread. Im not sure if this belongs here.
