Shortform name: Ransuğaral — 蘭漾(Lanyang | Ranyang)
Real life culture influence: Eastern Turkic Khaganate/Tujue
Real life culture of former colonizer: Jeongmi sphere of influence/Vassal state
Population: 22.8 million
GDP (PPP) per capita: $36,400
GDP (nominal) per capita: $22,100
Military manpower (active/reserve): 55,000 active | 190,000 reserve
Language(s): Ransuğaralese (Sinicized/Koreanized Kyrgyz/Proto Turkic, Islamic and Russian vocab subbed out accordingly)
Nation description:
So for this Turkic/Kyrgyz based Sinju (on that big island to the west of Jeongmi) nation it would be rather forested and mountainous with mostly coastal and river settlements that popped up due to migration and trade. Rather temperate. Rather comfy.

The Turkic people groups came over as traders and would eventually assimilate the native Tungusic population over 800 years (500 to 1300). The first major unifying Khaganate appeared under the name of "Ran Qaghan" which may be where the name Ransuğaral came from. Alternative sources suggest it was an exonym by Sinju traders who came across the abundance of orchid-like flowers in the palaces of the Kaghans. It isn't clear, but the historical account does suggest that the namesake stems from Ran Qaghan (Lan Kehan, Ran Gahan), the individual who successfully united what would become Ransuğaral, and the Turkic words for water, suu. Eventually, the "pureblood" Turkic inhabitants which made most of the nobility and merchant class quickly Sinicized/Koreanized, adopting customs from Jeongmi (including scripts; Hanja and Hangul that replaced their Uyghur one) and mainland Sinju. However, they also Turkicized much of the sparse native population in the process, especially evident during the early settlement, contact, and eventual conquest of the region. In present day Ransuğaral these indigenous Tungusic peoples have pressured for recognition of their culture, language, and heritage.

Religious practices, however, are slightly different from mainland Sinju although not too dissimilar from northern Sinju (Jeongmi), Yoju (other Turkic and Mongolic nations), and Uju. Animism and shamanism, as well as worship of a henotheistic heavenly order, is characteristic of Ransuğaralese spirituality. The largest "organized" religion being some Dharmic faith although the presence is rather minimal. However, the government is somewhat cold to foreign religious movements, instead promoting the native, personal spirituality. For the most part Ransuğaralese are not very religious, but very receptive of natural spirituality which is reflected among its ardent support of ecological movements and preservation of nature. Ultimately this is a choice made so I can sub in Islamic terms in Kyrgyz/Proto Turkic with Sanskrit/Dharmic ones.

Mixed market economy, not as developed as mainland Sinju. IRL analogue can be Portugal/Cyprus/Poland. Somewhat oligarchic and controlled by political clans/dynasties. Currently would be governed by a nationalist, populist leader and their cadre albeit one that is rather progressive (environmentalist, anti-corporate influence, somewhat against the existing political dynasties) on some aspects and being a bit draconian in others (cultural chauvinism and some weird hodge-podge of mild xenophobic sentiment mixed with pan Turkic irredentism/militarism)

History would probably go:
Breakaway from larger Turkic/Mongolic Khaganate -> sea traders, sea raiders, and settlers on that island -> confederacy of various settler and native groups -> post 1400 unification and start of more rapid Sinicization/falls under Jeongmi's sphere of influence -> 1800s nationalist movements and modernization -> 1900s turmoil and some political upheaval -> 2000s contemporary era, populists begin to dominate in the new 10s

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tiandi only for Asian nations?

No. Tiandi is a diverse planet roughly the size of Earth, and is home to a multitude of unique cultures.

Why is the lingua franca Korean and not Mandarin Chinese?

OOCly, Korean is the most convenient for me as an ethnic Korean. Also, it's pretty cool having Korean as the lingua franca. ICly, history played out in ways in which Korean played a more significant role globally and Mandarin Chinese did not become the dominant language among Sinitic peoples.

Why can't my nation speak Korean/Japanese/Mandarin?

There are already other countries which speak that language. It doesn't make sense for several different countries to all be speaking the same exact language with the same exact standardization, especially if they are far away from one another. However, this is somewhat negotiable in that there can be different dialects and efforts toward standardization by several different countries.

Why can't RL country have been involved in my country's history?

Tiandi is a closed world; it does not interact ICly with the rest of the NS world or the RL world.

Why can't my Western, European nation have colonized?

European nations did not colonize in Tiandi's history.

Why can't I be a former European colony?

European nations did not colonize in Tiandi's history.

Why can't my non-European nation have heavy European influence?

European nations did not colonize in Tiandi's history.

Why shouldn't everyone in my country be using English as a second language? Isn't English an international language?

Not in Tiandi. In Tiandi, the British Empire and the United States never existed. Korean fulfills English's RL position.

Why can't I claim wherever I want?

In order to have the locations of countries, languages, and cultures make more sense, Tiandi has a cultural map that roughly shows the location of indigenous cultures prior to colonialism.

Can I claim in areas where there are NPCs?

Yes. NPCs are placeholders until player-controlled nations come along.

Are the borders on the map fixed?

No. The ones for NPCs are again placeholders. They are there to remind people that the rest of the world still exists.

What is the map scale?

1 pixel = 9 x 9 km

I was told I was seeing an older version of the map. How can I access the newest one?

Instructions are here.

Why can't my country be rich, large, and wealthy?

Not every country can be rich, wealthy, and large. Furthermore, in order to keep regional canon stable, different areas of the world have different levels of wealth and standards of living.

Does Tiandi use NS stats or NS stat calculators?

No. We make up our own stats, within reason.

Are puppets allowed?

Puppets are allowed in Tiandi. However, if nothing is done with it, we may ask for it to be removed.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: "Oceanic Communities"/"Free Zones" (自由區/海區/해역) - Haiqu or Haegu or Haeyeog
Real life culture influence: multicultural, native population somewhere between dayak, Taino/arawak and polynesian
Real life culture of former colonizer: Jeongmi? Meisaan?
Population: ~10 to ~15,000
GDP (PPP) per capita: not applicable
GDP (nominal) per capita: not applicable
Military manpower (active/reserve): not applicable (somewhere around ~2,000 militia, pirates and volunteers concerned with defense and whatnot)
Language(s): various, Cantonese and Korean common lingua francas
Nation description:
The Free Zones (aka Haeyeog) is, by all intents and purposes, a country. More accurately, it is a counter-society—a sociopolitical order diametrically opposed to the rest of the world. Sovereign, but not a state, thriving without authority. A supposed abberation in the modern world, the Free Zones are a loose collection of communes (more accurately, zones a défendre) over the ocean, consisting of a myriad of pirates, "debauchery-crazed degenerates", refugees, asylum seekers, rosy-eyed lovers of freedom and starry-eyed adventure-seekers. It is a country in a sense that is is a diplomatic entity, albeit a very inconsistent one. In short, Sea Gypsies for anarchy.

The islands in which the free zones currently stand was once a private estate under the nominal authority of a great power. Claimed by a private corporation under the good graces of the government in the immediate postwar era, the native populations of the islands became subject to repression, marginalization and sometimes straight up indentured servitude. Owing to the archipelago's land area and geography, however, the native populations managed to create a guerilla resistance movement (a la brazilian maroons) that caught the attention of radicals from the mainlands. In the participation of these foreign sympathizers, the drive to drive the corporation out of the islands mutated into a drive for the creation of a freed society, a beacon for victims of oppression all around the world. Resistance and occupation overlap, and after multiple efforts by governments and the corporation to retake the occupation, the efforts eventually halted. The occupation exists to this day, aided by international support and the diplomatic impunity through the Free Territories.

Lacking a central order, the zones adhere towards a polycentric system supported only by a semi-direct democratic chamber simply called the "assembly", a procedural measure only to convene at times of high urgency. communities actively experimenting with everything that may or may not work, from rogue science, local computer networks to social and economic theories. Inspired by environmentalist currents from the earlier foreign volunteers the various communities in their own way try their best to preserve what is left of the islands' ecological sanctity. Communities openly interact with each other and rarely interfere with each others' affairs. Other forms of social organization include cliques, militia, gangs, guilds and cooperatives. Among the most prominent include the Band of Poets, a collective of artists that organize events within the communes of Samgeung, the Red Trigram Militia (responsible for about 30% of peace and order issues in the islands) and the Kahadaliw, an indigenous priesthood that has garnered a local following among the new settlers.

Piracy (both in the torrent and raiding contexts), contraband, illegal drugs and other criminal are a common thing in the zones (much to their dismay, though they prop up a good lot of the network's economy and sometimes serve as their informal navies). In regards to piracy, particularly some raiding groups ported in the islands have made the zones deeply suspect in their activities. However, as long as the zones stand, the Free Zones continue to be a symbol of struggle and resistance against the state, capital and its cronies.

Are you willing to drastically alter your nation in order to fit with Tiandi canon?: I mean this is a given.

Gyokusen wrote:NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: 玉川/Gyokusen (Full name: 玉川天王国/Gyokusen Ten-ōkoku)
Real life culture influence: Japanese cultural influence
Real life culture of former colonizer: N/A
Population: 18.3 million
GDP (PPP) per capita: $66,742
GDP (nominal) per capita: $61,348
Military manpower (active/reserve): 80,000 active/250,000 reserves
Language(s): Japanese
Nation description: Gyokusen is nominally a monarchy with a Royal Family, but in practice it is a highly-liberalised parliamentary democracy where the King (国王陛下) serves as little more than a cultural figurehead, a remnant of an absolute monarchy centuries past, with a unicameral legislature and a Prime Minister as the head of government holding all executive power and influence. Culturally speaking, Gyokusen is increasingly culturally-secular with a growing number of irreligious citizens, but with the bulk of the population still following a syncretistic mixture of traditional East Asian religions with strong influences from Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and State Shintoism (owing to the ceremonial role of the Royal Family). The legislature regularly changes hands between the two main parties, the centre-right 民主党 and the centre-left 自由進歩党, and while nominally a parliamentary democracy, loose election regulations and highly-liberal lobbying laws means that Gyokusen is in reality a plutocracy, with elected governments dominated and heavily-influenced by a small number of highly-motivated and wealthy families (colloquially referred to as 家族), in particular five main family clans (遠山氏、松平氏、保科氏、竹中氏、小松氏) whose large family trust estates hold investment in vast areas of the economy, particularly in real estate, banking, mining, textiles and rare earth minerals production, functioning more as a corporatist and oligopolistic economic system in practice. Owing to the high-degree of control and influence wielded by the small clique of business trustees or 商議徒党, Gyokusen is a business-friendly country, with very low income and corporate taxes and no capital gains, estate, financial transactions and dividends taxes, no stamp duties on land conveyances, strong banking and financial secrecy laws and a very open immigration and refugee policy. Accordingly, the Gyokusen people are relatively culturally-open and comparatively-receptive to the influx non-Gyokusen foreign cultures, with the capital city of 桜京市 acting as both of a bustling financial transactions hub and a highly-diverse and cosmopolitan ethno-cultural melting pot. Gyokusen suffers from particularly-high rates of income inequality, which often generates some internal unrest and dissatisfaction amongst the country's lower-income citizenry, particularly due to the overrepresentation of ethnic minorities in the bottom 10% of Gyokusen households. The nation generally takes a non-interventionist stance on foreign wars and conflicts, its main foreign policy interests lie mainly in seeking to promote trade liberalisation and trade agreements with other countries, and attracting greater foreign investment into Gyokusen, all other foreign policy interests are generally secondary to these two.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Fayun
Real life culture influence: S. China
Real life culture of former colonizer: N/A
Population: 73.1 million ~
GDP (PPP) per capita: $44,000
GDP (nominal) per capita: $41,000
Military manpower (active/reserve): 150,000 (75,000 / 75,000)
Language(s): Hakka, Cantonese
Nation description:

The first unified Fayunese state existed as a vassal state of Tianqi, with power focused around several larger settlements and cities. After the collapse of Tianqi the Fayunese region continued to be ruled by the nobility, an intermarriage of both local and Tianqi Imperial traditions, but with power focused around the area of Kimsu. Through the various rivers and coastal settlements the Fayunese Kingdom established itself as a regional center of trade and commerce. Centralization under an Imperial system occurred around the 14th century in response to external threats and pressures. Fayun would establish itself as a moderate colonial power and industrial / economic power in the 1800s. The Fayunese Empire would last into the 1900s before collapsing during the Fayunese Civil War in 1914. Following the Civil War the country was ruled by a one party system under the National Republican Movement and its leader Fu Xinya. The death of Fu Xinya in 1963 exasperated already present unrest and instability in the nation's already weak political system. The Camellia Revolution (1963-1965) was a largely nonviolent transition of power which led to the establishment of a liberal, democratic government in Fayun. Since the 1960s the country underwent several periods of radical change in the late 60s and early 70s which resulted in the liberalization and opening of the country. Rekindled ties with the rest of Sinju led to a period of rapid reinvestment and development starting in 1969 and continuing through in the 1980s.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Jizhou Tianguo
Real life culture influence: Northern China
Real life culture of former colonizer: N/A
Population: 47 million
GDP (PPP) per capita: 29K
GDP (nominal) per capita: 34K
Military manpower (active/reserve): 400,000/300,000
Language(s): Jizhouese Chinese written in Jizhouese Orthography
Nation description:

Jizhou is on a forested peninsula split by a mountain range. It was once part of the Tianqi Empire. This is a matter of pride to the Jizhouese people who view themselves as the only true successor to Tianqi. Beyond dogmatically claiming succession from Tianqi, very little set Jizhou apart from her neighbors for much of its history. This could change in the late 17th century when after a bloody civil war, Jizhou implemented a system of Imperial serfdom to try and rebuild. While this system was at first very successful, it lead to a class of landed slave-masters forming that would gradually take power away from the Emperor. In the mid 19th century tension between the serfs and masters boiled over in a massive rebellion that led to the official abolition of serfdom, though this had little practical effect. Around the same time a civil servant wrote a book describing an ideology called distributionism. The distributionist movement rose up during the turn of the century and brought down the Jizhouese monarchy only to immediately descend into infighting as well as conflict with liberal democracts. These conflicts only ended in the 1940s when the New Order was established as the government of Jizhou that persists today.

The New Order is one of the most extreme governments in the world. It is a unique mix of ultra-nationalism, radical socialism, and extreme authoritarianism. Politically, it is an authoritarian democracy. The people elect a body known as the Legislative Yuan which functions less like a legislature and more like the Politburo of a Marxist-Leninist State. The people also approve the appointed governors and magistrates. In order to prevent the rise of the demagogues that had destroyed Jizhou a century prior, a system of examinations was implemented to screen candidates. The government consists of several hundred bureaus and councils that manage all affairs of state with every promotion based on the an examination. Another kind of democracy is the formalized petition system where 100 citizens can submit a petition to the local magistrate, who is obligated to send it up the chain of command if it cannot be addressed at their level.

The New Order has a unique economic system based around central planning. This was a rather limited affair when the New Order was founded in 1945, but has since ballooned. With the rise of information technology, Jizhouese officials now plan on abolishing money and transition to a fully centrally planned economy. Currently an average Jizhouese citizen gets 30% of their goods for free from the National Distribution System, another 40% from State-owned supermarkets, and the remainder from smaller private enterprises. Jizhou performs central planning on every level, with national, provincial, district, and work-place offices. All banks are state-owned in Jizhou.

Jizhou and the New Order's most defining trait is its unique view on social issues. It is most notable for its ultra-nationalist views. This includes promoting a NewSpeak form of Jizhouese. The Jizhouese government also created a new form of writing to make learning Jizhou easier, leading to a 100% literacy rate. The government has also placed very tight limits on immigrations and the influence of foreign culture. Jizhouese cultural supremacism is also encouraged. The New Order has also embraced feminism and full gender equality to increase the population pool for government officials.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Samanohuwa
Real life culture influence: Polynesian with a healthy dosage of Mahajapit Majahapit Mahapajit Majapahit.
Real life culture of former colonizer: Jeongmi or Meisaan maybe. Perhaps not as a colony but as a 'protectorate'.
Population: 36,620,758
GDP (PPP) per capita: NS$36,270
GDP (nominal) per capita: NS$29,209
Military manpower (active/reserve): ~120,000 / ~45,000
Language(s): Hawaiian, Marquesan, Samoan, Tonganese, [Colonizer language]
Nation description: "The Land of the Friendly Sharks", as the name of the nation and archipelago that is the Kingdom of Samanohuwa literally translates to, is a fertile and relatively new nation from a historical perspective - strong currents flow along the side facing the nearest continent in both directions, and the warm waters draw frequent storms, so much of was only colonized by humans in the third century BCE, when many other civilizations had progressed deep into the Iron Age. A network of hundreds of islands spread across thousands of square kilometers, ranging from flat and level atolls and rocky outcroppings in the east, fog-enshrined volcanic islands in the middle, quickly rising to the snowcapped tectonic massifs of Laninui in the west, the largest island by far in the nation. A combination of fertile soils, excellent timber, rare and exotic fruits and spices, and of course the large gold and iron (and centuries later, thorium) deposits ensured an excellent base from which to grow an economy from, and later a nation.

For the first several hundred years of the archipelago's history, it was little more than a collection of tribes alternately warring or forging alliances. It was Ahuahu that first started unifying the islands, and it was his unification of the island of Samanohuwa proper that is the reason why he is considered the nation's first true king. He began a long campaign of expansionism, which eventually led to Samanohuwa controlling about an eighth of the kingdom's present territory by the end of his reign in the middle of the fourth century. The next four hundred years saw periods of both slow and fast expansion, but it was under the reign of Kuitakui I that it underwent its largest expansion - reaching out to unoccupied atolls to the east and westward towards Lanuinui, where his expansion eventually halted around his fiftieth birthday.

While the differences between the other islands were relatively subtle from island to island in Samanohuwa, Lanuinui was quite different. Despite being larger than most of the others combined, it had been united for most of its existence. While the rest of Samanohuwa was predominantly of the native Samanohuwan faith (which would not be standardized until well into the fourteenth century) with some esoteric Theravadan Buddhism, Lanuinui was predominantly Hindu with more standard Theravadan Buddhism as the main religion. Samanohuwa had a single king, Lanuinui had an oligarchy of chiefs, princes, and kings. Samanohuwans often wore clothes only to protect against inclement weather or during dangerous activities (though some would even go into battle nude) unless they were priests, Lanuinuians would wear garments to protect their already worn cotton, linen, and silk clothing imported from across the sea. Lanuinui had population numbers and slightly better armor, but Samanohuwa had more soldiers, more experienced generals, and better training. Still, Kuitakui would keep appearances of peace while building up his armies and war fleets.

The conquest would go on for six long grueling years, and Kuitakui, slain by a favored general who had been tricked by a power-hungry priest, would fall on the last day of the war. The coming dawn would see the surrender of the government of Lanuinui, and for this the new (and current) capital of 'Aho'eiku was named and established, for the old one on Samanohuwa proper, Kaneloa had been severely damaged in a storm - it would eventually serve as the judiciary capital centuries later. The massive boost in income from the gold and iron so plentiful in Lanuinui's mountains would not be enough to undo the damage caused by the war, and Samanohuwa went into several centuries of tenuous stability. There was the king operating out of 'Aho'eiku, yes, but his power was nowhere near the level that it was before the war, and much power was in petty chiefs through whom the kings delegated power to save money. During this time, Samanohuwans would grow themselves an unfortunate (but at the time well-deserved) reputation as raiders and pirates.

For thousands of kilometers around, Samanohuwan ships became feared for their raids, stealing gold, women, and just about anything not nailed down, even the men. They reached as far as northern Miju, taking a sizable number of slaves from there and the lands beyond via either raids or trade. It was from here that the bulk of the black and white minorities both originate, as Samanohuwan law did not allow interracial relationships even among the slave caste. The whole time, the actual government engaged in trade with the lands to the north - conveniently and easily brushing aside the rampant piracy because Samanohuwan pirates simply did not raid that far north in that era. As tactics and technology changed however, the raiding slowed, eventually stopping near the end of the eleventh century. For the next six centuries, Samanohuwa would mostly manage to stay out of trouble - having a civil war in the twelfth and sporadic attempts to colonize both the mainland and Barujaya in the fourteenth were the largest exceptions. The power of the Moa (king/emperor/depends-on-who-you-ask) waxed and waned not unlike the tide as the nobles grew and shrank in power.

Eventually though, changing behaviors among sea tradesmen, changing politics, and a period of government weakness resulted in a rebound in piracy in an age when the whole sphere of Tiandi could be navigated. For a while, Samanohuwa let it be, much to the chagrin of the greater powers. Crime or not, it brought in money and it mostly didn't impact Samanohuwa. And when it did they could show to said greater powers that the Moa was 'doing something' by arresting a few pirates that tried to take out of the government's pie - especially in regards to slaves, which Samanohuwa by then took from nearly every continent that the world had access to. Foreign pirates flocked to Samanohuwa as well because of these policies, eventually founding the third of the largest cities, Leiovaki, as a virtually lawless city where crime and chaos were rampant.

A major pirate raid against a treasure fleet owned by the governments of [colonizing nation] in the middle of the eighteenth century was the last straw. [Colonizing nation] could tolerate it no longer. The war was short, with few casualties on either side, but it was enough for [colonizing nation] to force a treaty with the Moa that in effect made them barely above a protectorate. It wasn't all bad - liberalism was brought to the Samanohuwan government by this protectorate status, as well as proper industrialization later in the nineteenth. The Kaleoali'i, the unicameral parliament of Samanohuwa, was formed in this era, universal men's suffrage for native Samanohuwans was granted in 1810, expanding to women in 1895 and all races in 1901. The economy grew further, with mines and plantations appearing alongside hotels, railways, and larger shipyards.

However, as the years wore on [colonizing nation] grew more and more controlling of Samanohuwan politics and culture. Laws regarding what clothes to wear, what food to eat, who to eat with and when (and how), who and how to vote for whom, what gods to worship and how to do so, what to celebrate, when to celebrate, and how to celebrate it, laws restricting or outright banning certain relationships, such were the Outsider Laws as they were known. Temples were torn down or repurposed for [colonizing nation]'s gods, land tenure - which had already been slowly shifting away from stewardship to ownership - was cemented as such, laws on morality and trade rights were passed and quite strongly enforced.

Like in much of the rest of the developed world, nationalism began to rise as the nineteenth century began to end. Politicians who wanted to reduce or even end outside control of Samanohuwan affairs gained popularity in the Kaleoali'i. The end of [colonizing nation]'s rule came about in 1910 during what would come to be known as the Monsoon War, as it initially started as protests over a perceived lack of aid after a severe storm damaged Leiovaki. This swelled over the course of barely two months into a full-scale rebellion, which ironically ended up gaining support within [colonizing nation] when the startling degree of corruption was shown among [colonizing nation]'s governors who controlled Samanohuwa. As a partial result, relations between [colonizing nation] and Samanohuwa warmed up quickly afterwards. Even so, the new Moa, Loka II created a new constitution with sweeping reforms that eliminated or even reversed many of the Outsider Laws. Some who had grown to approve of them attempted a rebellion (the Fourth Month Revolt) but it did not last long.

It would be important - during the Eulhae [or whatever you're calling it without Akitsukuni] War, Samanohuwa became a target due to its rich iron deposits and plentiful locations for hidden naval bases and airfields. But it held its ground, and provided great help to the Allies, even participating in later counter-invasions during the war. For its efforts, it became a founding member of the Congress of Nations, and has secured its position as Relevant Clay. Since the end of the war, the Kaleoali'i has grown in power to be nearly equal to the Moa and the political climate has largely stabilized.

Tensions exist between the leaders of the more remote and traditionalist tribal councils of the mountains and the more modern-living peoples and politicians of the cities, and piracy remains a problem in the more remote fringes and near the outside, but the Samanohuwan Navy ensures it never becomes anything more than a regional problem in the more dangerous areas. Even on land though, crime is an occasional problem, which tends to go up during the dry seasons or when the tourism yuans stop flowing. Other problems include a decaying road and rail infrastructure in many areas, which ranges from 'pothole farm' to 'pray it isn't raining' outside of the larger cities.

Tourism remains a major industry due to the beautiful beaches (and equally beautiful citizens), but Samanohuwa is not lacking in other fields - agriculture, mining, medical instruments, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and most notably the arms industry - the Samanohuwan military, featuring one of the largest navies in the world and no army at all (on paper) and a very small air force (on paper, almost solely consisting of bombers and transports) uses primarily Samanohuwan equipment. Culturally Samanohuwa is distinctly Samanohuwan, but there is still evidence of [colonizing nation]'s rule here and there, especially in more urban cities. Far from considering it a shame, Samanohuwa is proud of and celebrates the pirates of its past, though most don't like to talk about the more modern aspects of it unless they're actively involved in it.
Are you willing to drastically alter your nation in order to fit with Tiandi canon?: Of course.

Link to map claim (optional): I don't see anywhere that fits precisely so I may end up making my own archipelago for Samanohuwa, if at all possible - somewhere near the southeast of Jungju as indicated in Nation Description, or perhaps to the south of the landmasses due south of Jungju. The question is do I want it closer for more pirates or more distant for less cultral diffusion and chance of conquest? Part of the problem is that Barujaya is in a really nice position for my idea, even if it's too land-y. Probable discuss on Discord y/n?

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Esa 崖瀉
Real life culture influence: Ainu, as well as a tiny Nivkh minority.
Real life culture of former colonizer: (if applicable)
Population: 19,201,000
GDP (PPP) per capita: $59,105
GDP (nominal) per capita: $54,120
Military manpower (active/reserve): 66,020 active, 236,950 reserve - the majority of the latter consisting of a paramilitary/police force.
Language(s): Hokkaido Ainu and it's dialects, along with minorities of Sakhalin and Kurils Ainu speakers. And the aforementioned Nivkhs.
Nation description: Esa-i, the Place of Pouring Cliffs, is so-named for it's stunning 'speckled cliffs' of Shiripa, iconic volcanic formations that line it's western coast towards Fusen.

Historically the region has been divided between the sedentary, urbanized coastal regions, and the wilder interior. Maritime and land-based trade has defined it's development, with the first Esanese governments emerging as prosperous city-states ruled over by simple systems of clan-based democracy centered on the patriarchs of great merchant families. In many ways the region served as the gateway between Sinju and Uju.

These petty principalities, although not politically united until the early-modern period, shared a common notion of the Esa-i as distinct, and over the centuries a few of the more powerful among them made claims to hegemony over the region as a whole.

Ultimately, despite the machinations of the coastal states, it would be the Chieftains of Shoya, a town on the Hur-pet river running through the Esanese interior, that would ultimately rise to prominence and unify the Esa-i. The Shoya state would enjoy a few decades of prominence in western Uju, until it ultimately declined.

Unrest rocked Shoya as industrial and societal advancements swept east from Sinju, and the Shoyan elites found it increasingly difficult to resist demands for meritocratic and representative government. The War of the Plum Groves was the final straw for the city's ruling classes, and from the ashes of civil war emerged a new Esa.

Today, the State of Esa (Esa-mosir) is a stable, wealthy liberal democracy with a tricameral legislature, and it is divided into 30-or-so federal subjects - which exist in a hierarchy, with varying degrees of actual autonomy. Although generally left-leaning politically, notable inequalities persist in society, primarily based on access to education - necessary to succeed in the competitive, rigidly enforced meritocracy embraced by the nation. The divide in prosperity between the coast and the interior - barring Shoya, the federal capital - also continues. Internationally, Esa is likely close to other democracies in the region, and although not a major military power it frequently takes part in international peace keeping and humanitarian efforts and is relatively pro-active for it's size - though budget and political will is always a limiting factor. Most of it's influence lies in it's persistent role as a center of Uju-Sinju trade, and as an international banking hub.

Are you willing to drastically alter your nation in order to fit with Tiandi canon?: Naturally.

NATION APPLICATION

Shortform name: Saelobalgyeondoen (literally "New Found")/Saelbalden (long name: The Kingdom of Saelobalgyeondoen/Saelbalden).
Real life culture influence: East Asian (Elite), Dutch (Commoner)
Real life culture of former colonizer: Korean
Population: 26,053,968 (1% Jeongmian, 5% Other Sinju, 13% Native Bannermen, 82% Native Commoner)
GDP (PPP) per capita: $10,301
GDP (nominal) per capita: $10,301
Military manpower (active/reserve): 375,000/0 (Serving in the military is a duty of the Bannermen nobility, and the commoners are only brought in if conscription is introduced due to emergencies. Every family must field a warrior for the state, and Sinju Bannermen are the elite of this army. Around 10% of the Bannermen nobility serves in the armed forces).
Language(s): Korean (most of the nobility, both native and Sinju), Dutch (commoners)
Nation description: The relevant history for Saelbalden goes back to 1702, when an eccentric Jeongmian prince, 5,000 soldiers and their families conquered and settled the lands of this nation. Before this, Saelbalden was divided into smaller nations ruled by native princes or dukes.

Due to the intense rivalry and paranoia of these states, this small yet advanced force managed to conquer them all. Their ruling classes were either eliminated or assimilated into the army.

Serving in the military became a mark of pride for the nobility. Saelbalden is still a martial state, where the military is placed in a high state of society.

A chunk of the natives were promised that, in exchange for learning and daily using Jeongmian and adopting Jeongmian customs, they would join a fledgling banner system. This native nobility is now Saelbalden's upper middle class, given estates and lower-ranking positions. These native bannermen are different from their ethnic kin, existing in a hybrid Jeongmian-native culture, and many do not even speak Dutch.

In order to ensure that the new ruling class would be able to defend its new regime, a banner system was introduced. There are five banners: Red (higher Jeongmian), White (low Jeongmian), Blue (other Sinju), Green (high native) and Black (low native). People are born into their class at birth, and one can only enter or ascend in the banner hiearchy if the Monarch allows it personally. Technically there is no requirement for race, but in practice the banners are incredibly segregated, with only one native bannermen family being in the Blue Banner. Banner families must provide soldiers for the military, and banners often operate and fight separate from the others, but will be integrated if need be. The more elite forces tend to be from the higher banners, such as the Red and White.

In the 1800's, Sinju peoples, no matter their race, were invited to settle. They were given estates, and an entire new banner, the Blue Banner, was created for them. The White Banner grew at a considerable rate during this period.

In 1843, the natives had enough of Saelbalden rule and revolted. Known as the Heerlik Rebellion, it was crushed, but it showed that this form of rule was taking its toll, and that the natives would not continue to tolerate it. The Twelve Uprisings, a series of twelve rebellions by natives, occurred between 1844-1889, and it weakened the Saelbalden state, with both the nobility and the commoners suffering casualties, and the economy was in tatters during this period.

At the fourteenth rebellion of this century, the Geohan Rebellion of 1892, the Saelbalden state had enough. In a display of force, they initiated the Geohan Massacres, where they would raid native settlements all over their realm and kill a quarter of their inhabitants. Further, the Saelbalden passed new laws restricting commoner movement and gathering, in addition to imposing punishments so severe for crimes, the nobility hoped they would not dare to rebel again. The commoner population decreased during this time.

As the commoners were chained to noble estates, their mobility was now a thing of the past. Any commoner who did not work for a month would be publicly flogged, and if they did not work for half a year, their entire immediate family would be executed. This reign of terror kept the commoners in line as barely free serf-like people, but they became extremely bitter and furious with the ruling elite.

The Fifteenth Rebellion, the Glorious Uprising, occurred from 1949-1960. Unlike the rebellions of before, this time it was a trickle few, mostly young nobles that lead this revolt, mobilizing their estate workforce into a peasant army that liberated any other estates they could take over. The Saelbalden Government, although publicly seeming as resolute and determined to fight on, was extremely frightened. Even when the tide of the war turned in 1957 in favour of the authorities, they lived in fear, fearing that the commoners would win the rebellion.

This forced some changes, albeit politically cosmetic in hindsight. The laws of servitude and the reign of terror were abolished, a legislature and a constitution were introduced, and the commoners got voting rights. However, the new legislature had two chambers: the Noble Council and the House of Commons. The Noble Council is the upper house, with half of its members being elected by the bannermen nobility and half being appointed by the King. The House of Commons is elected by the commoners, but despite this, the government is known to severely gerrymander voting districts and sometimes rig elections to keep the ruling system in place.

However, the commoners were placated for the time being. The economic and social reforms, albeit leaving the aristocracy in place, has drastically levelled the playing field, with both bannermen and commoners having equal access to free education, both lower and higher. Some commoners even have prospered economically and have been raised to the Black Banner, leaving some commoners with the hope that, if they succeed, they may also be noble someday. The aristocracy knows this, and only encourages this behaviour, even claiming that the ascension of the noveau riche is an act of meritocracy from the Monarchy.

Real life culture of former colonizer: Korean
Population: 33,254,100
GDP (PPP) per capita: $7,350
GDP (nominal) per capita: $1,238
Military manpower (active/reserve): 65,000 (active); 80,000 (reserve)

Nation description:
Dehqoniston as we know it today began as something of a confederation of Jeongmian protectorates. Taking advantage of Jeongmi's involvement in the Eulhae War, Dehqoniston unilaterally declared independence in 1935. Sparsely populated and underdeveloped, independence came at the hefty price of economic turbulence and political instability, and a succession of dictatorships rocked the young nation as it tried to find its way. As of 1997, Dehqoniston is more politically stable, having restored diplomatic and economic relationships with Jeongmi, but it still has a long way to go. Dehqoniston is functionally a unitary parliamentary republic, and would be described as "partially free".
