Rain pounded against the window as the old incandescent light bulb shine dimly on the wooden cabinet. The half elven maiden who by human years would be considered middle age but still young by elven standards recline back on the leather seat as the gramophone played a beautiful music using mainly string instruments. The half elf had her eyes closed as she allowed her mind to wander off, to make the music help Invision what sights her mental eyes will conjure.

Just as she was beginning to let herself be lost to the music a loud ring began to echo from across the room. Sibyl open her eyes and look through the darken room, getting up to follow the source of the ringing. Hearing it from her studies and office she open the door and enter the room. She look at her desk to see the source was the telephone being the source of the ringing.

Walking over she picked it up. "Hello this is Blackstone Agencies how can we help you?" She asked. From the other line she heard a voice with the same Albian accent coming through, she knew who it was right away. "I see you finally got a telephone line. I'm still getting use to these new confangile devices myself." Sibyl chuckled. "You'll get use go them eventually Arthur. Did you call to see if my line works?" She knew he wouldn't be calling her for something like that, not while he was still 9n his shift. "I'm afraid not Mrs. Blackstone. I'm calling because we need your help with solving an incident at a slum." Sibyl frown, she knew what he meant by incident. "Where is the location?" The detective reached for a ballpoint pen and notes and began to write down the directions. "I'll be right there."

Sibyl would hang up the phone as she walked up to the coat hanger and grab her long coat and putting it on. The next article of clothing would be her shoulder cape and withered feather cap. The half elf would go through her house and find the door that both lead to and out of her townhouse. Stepping out the small lamps shining with a ball of blazing Vash orb illuminated the darken street along with the other lamps. Sibyl ignored the rain landing on her as she climb down the steps and began to walk on the wet sidewalk to find a gunnery stop.

The various stone and wooden buildings in this part of the city rarely went past the five story mark. She saw men and women of various races walking on the streets like her but others were lucky to have umbrella with them. For Sibyl she gave hers to her daughter as she didn't mind the rain too much. On the road she saw wagons, rickshaws, and carriages being pulled by animals; some still appearing natural as the day they were born or were altered by Vim for improved performance. A few were chimeras or golems made in the form of animals. Yet some of the wagons and rickshaws that Sibyl saw were being moved by engines. Whether they were steam, electric, or those new engines using a new form of artificial Vim that mixes Vuk, Virl, and Vash to produce spontaneous combinations within the engines they made the previous wooden vehicles into metal constructs.

It took a while for those too see engines be used on them, for it was the carriages that benefited from the steam engine first after locomotives changed the world. Sibyl eye one passing by as right in the middle of the road an electric powered tram went by. Trams used to be drawn by beasts of nature and magic but when the electric tram was made most of them were seemingly replaced overnight. Most of the former tram operators either return to their old jobs using the new machines or were forced to work in the factories.

Hearing thunder rumbling from above she looked up to the darken sky, lights from the floating airships and distant skyscrapers being the only sources of light from the sky. Sibyl wonder to herself if the sky was truly black because of the weather or if the smog from the factory changed it to that color? It wouldn't be the first time that happened in the city. Sibyl's musing would come to an end as she saw a steam carriage stopping to drop off passengers. As she approached the vehicle the last passenger left and she quickly replaced them. After she gave the driver directions where to go the man waited for more passages before he began to drive through the road, steam bellowing out of the wood and metal construct.

As the gurney began its journey on top the cobblestone road network of Lumina Sibyl took out a small book she carried with herself to pass the time while using public transportation. She can hear the loud whistle of a steam locomotive as the beast of steel and iron went above her from the elevated steel bridge. The half elf tried to ignore the pain the machine caused her due to her sensitive hearing, however she still rubbed her forehead as she felt a headache coming. Eventually the headache and ringing from her ears would fade and looking outside she can see the buildings beginning to look more rundown and dingy, she knew she was getting closer go her destination.

The driver would stop and tell Sibyl that this was as far as he was willing to go. She thank him for the ride and paid him. As she exit the gurney the man quickly turn the vehicle around and left the neighborhood quickly as the machine can go. She didn't blame the man for not being here, these particular slums are rather infamous for the gang violence and murders that occur in here. Feeling for her revolver and dagger to ensure she had means to defend herself Sibyl walker deeper into the dark underbelly of Lumina, the Vim capital of the world.

Cadia, Status Ecclesiasticus

The Duke's palace was a magnificent one.

Cadia could perhaps be called "the city of palaces" and the Duke D'Orsino's was no exception. The high ceilings, white marble, and stained glass at times made the structure look more like the myriad temples that also dotted the capital of the Sacred Ecclesiarchy of Una's landscape but the sheer ostentatiousness of the Duke's ancestral home made its purpose obvious.

The party raging inside was drawing at last to a close. It was approaching three in the morning and everyone was eager to get home to their own palaces. As the guests wandered off in their drunken stupors, two figures remained.

The first was a woman that could only be described as beauty incarnate. From her clothes to her face, the young blonde woman seated was the very textbook definition of gorgeous.

The second figure was the Duke himself. A middle-aged man, he had a distinguished look about him that was handsome in his own right, but compared to the blazing sun seated across from him, the Duke was but a small match.

Both rose and the woman bowed and spoke.

"I had a wonderful time," she spoke in the clear and elegant High Cadian tongue. "I hope you invite me again." She flashed a smile that would cause any man to swoon.

The Duke returned her smile with a bow of his own.

"Any time you're back in Cadia," he replied. "May I escort you to your hotel?"

The Duke's eyes snapped open.

His head throbbed and he couldn't understand why he was there. He tried moving his head but realised all too soon that he couldn't. Not only could he not move his head, but his arms, legs, wrists, and feet were similarly locked in place. The Duke tried to let out a scream, but something was gagging his mouth.

"Ah, so you're finally awake, huh?"

A voice rang out.

A beautiful woman approached and entered his field of vision. Her body was bound only in an arrangement of leather belts, covering her more sensitive areas but extremely alluring all the same. It took him a moment to realise, but this was the same woman from the party.

Shock and horror exploded throughout the Duke's mind. How did he get there? What was this woman going to do to him?

"I hope you slept all right," she said in a soothing voice, like one a mother might use on a child. She caressed his cheek with her right hand and got close enough for him to smell her perfume. It had a sweet scent, but it did little to assuage his fears. In fact, the sheer strangeness of it worried the Duke further and he let out a fearful shriek.

"Now now, we've only even begun and you're acting this way?" It was now that the Duke realised that he was completely naked. The woman smiled, all the same, the same smile she used earlier but now instead of charming it disturbed him.

"I should probably start with my name," the girl said. "I am Venusta Navi of the Ordo Inqisito." At those words, the Duke 's breathing grew harder and his eyes almost popped out of his head.

"Yes, it seems like you understand now. You've been very, very naughty," she said in a childish voice that otherwise would have sounded very cute and coquettish. "You know what the Ecclesiarchy's policy on drugs is, and yet you use your title as a Duke and your position in the Cadian Assembly to smuggle and sell drugs." Venusta waved a finger like she was scolding a student.

The Duke tried moving his body to loosen the restraints but to no avail. Venusta merely laughed.

"It's no use, dear. You can't escape. No, what you're going to do is sing." The Duke stopped squirming for a moment and gave the strange woman a curious look. She nodded.

"Yes, sing. You'll be joining the choir." Venusta reached over to a table and fiddled around for a moment before she found what she wanted. She brought the object to the Duke's field of vision. It was a thin silver rod with a barb attached, less than a fifth of an inch thick.

"I had a friend who suffered from calculi," she explained. "So we're going to start with this."

The Duke realised what was going on and began to sob. Venusta again laughed.

"You're going to be here for a long time, my dear. We can't have you crying yet..."

Catherine Cierra

"Monsieur, where are you going, the night is still young." Catherine called out, slowly walking ahead in the dark alleyway. In front of her was a dead body, a tainted soul that had been polluted with the beliefs of this new world and new magic that took hold. As she prepared to step over it, she felt something. Life. It was coming from the corpse, a sense of warmness, of life. As she stopped with her foot raised over the body, she looked ahead. The man, 1 leg sliced off, was now limping towards the gate. Yet looking back down she saw that the body was slowly moving and twitching, a hand reaching towards her left foot. Raising her scythe, she hesitated for a moment as she felt her head pulsating.

After a second, she set the scythe down, only to bring her right foot down hard on the head, splitting it as she slowly pulled it out of the now split skull. That should've killed him. As she saw the man look around and struggle to open the gate, she charged forward, bring her scythe behind her as a purple wake appeared in her path. "Come now, let's dance!" She shouted as she lept up almost ten meters in front of the man, before bringing the scythe down straight onto his head. As it came down, her vision slowly changed to one of peace, she was in a garden, scythe replaced with a small spade and the man now a small pot. All around her was white, gone was the dark poorly lit alleyway in the dark underworld of the city.

"The roses have begun to bloom I see." Catherine muttered. From her point of view all she had done was bring down a simple shovel into the garden pot. Loosen the soil to aerate it, that was what mother taught her. As she dug into the pot, she slowly giggled, watching the roses bloom more and more until it appeared more like a bouquet. "Get a hold of yourself. You're on a mission." A voice snapped her back into reality as she looked at her hands. They were completely covered in blood, along with her body and clothes. Looking at the man it appeared that the door had been unlocked but he failed to open it in time, now he was dead with a scythe lodged into his head.

The truth behind the killings was that they were workers for a nearby company, specializing in goods powered by Vim. The tainted good that powered the now forsaken world, unlike the true magic that ran in her veins which purified the vim introduced into her body. The cult saw them as a nuisance, and thus she was called in. It was a little messy but nonetheless it was still a completed job. As she slowly ripped the scythe from the head, causing more 'roses' to bloom, she heard a scream. Turning towards the direction of it, she saw someone, figure indiscernible due to the darkness, running off.

That was her cue to hightail it. Holding her scythe, she sighed as she muttered a few incantations, causing her tattoos to lightly glow before she spun her scythe in front of her. Within a few seconds once the scythe finished 1 full rotation it appeared like she was being condense down as she shrunk and disappeared, back to another part of the city.

Yet again tonight, the corpses of workers in the seedy underbelly are found, brutalized and sliced up, just like clockwork.

Malius followed his target into the darker part of the city near the slums and pulled out a throwing knife. The man suddenly turned around and, upon seeing Malius, began to run. "This could've been easier if you hadn't run." Malius said to himself as he threw the knife, striking the running man in the back. He fell and Malius walked over to the man and pulled out the knife, causing him to yell in pain. "Still alive? No wonder my client payed me so much to make sure you stay dead." Before the man could respond Malius slashed his throat with a dagger and the man died. Malius wiped the bloody weapons off on the man's coat and walked off to meet his client.

"I hate the slums. They're so filthy and full of beggars. How do you stand it?" said the nobleman who hired Malius. "I stand it because people here are less likely to tell the law where I am when I give them a discount on my....services." The noble nodded and handed Malius a small sack full of money and left. Malius weighed the bag in his hand and let a whistle out. "Nobles may be pricks, but at least they pay well." he said before putting the bag into his pocket and, before he began walking, making sure his mask was one straight.

"City hall wanted to put some new lights around here some years ago." Arthur told Sibyl as the two walked up to the wrought iron fence. The the shoulder cape that covered the upper parts of his uniform flapped against the wind. His helmet doing little to shield him from the rain but he did not complain about it, he has grown use to working out in the rain.

"Apparently some of the rats there decided that it wasn't worth their time to waste any money on improving the lights in here. Especially sense some of the residence in here can see well in the dark." The detective was silent as she examined the fence, seeing a clean cut on one of the bars. "I see." She told him and she walked up the the bar to get a better look, running her covered nail through the cut.

Sibyl just got an off feeling about the cut, she felt the magical vibration of some form of Vim but this one was peculiar. "How much further, Constable?" Sibyl asked. Arthur looked at the abandoned home they found the body. "We're almost there ma'am." The man lead the detective to the building. Looking at the building Sibyl saw that it was a huge, ugly building with the rough-hewn straight lines typical of the neo-dwarven architecture - the kind put together by a still-beardless foreman and a dozen orcs and humans, to the tune of "hurry up", "faster", and most importantly, "as cheap as possible".

"Where was the body found?" She asked the constable. "On the stairs, between the second and third floor

Stepping inside Sibyl resisted the urge to shiver. The stove that was in the building was broken and the building lack the new heater devices that was sweeping across homes and high rises. The building was even darker than outside, enough that even Sibyl was having a hard time seeing. Yet in the dark she still saw a few more officers with one if them being a familiar gray skin goblin holding a lantern.

"Good afternoon Dickenwright." The goblin replied back the same greetings. "Have any if your informants provided any clues for us?" The goblin snorted. "Nah, all of them are as clueless as the rest of us on whether this is a lone serial killer or corporate sabotage." That news got Sibyl to raise a brow. The goblin looked at the response and chuckled. "I see you are unaware of our victim yet. The bloody corpse is another factory work own by one of companies, I think this time it was Photo Obscura company lost someone."

Photo Obscura, a company fame for making photography related equipment and kinotropes, the half elf wonder why worker from that company would be in here as most of the factories and offices own by the company are at the other side of the city? Dickenwright lead Sibyl up the creaking stairs and it didn't take long for them to find the corpse.

Looking at the cooling cadaver Sibyl noted that the worker was either in his late teens or early twenties, a terrible shame for the human to due so young. His skin was dark but it was now a shade lighter, his left arm was severed from the elbow and he had many slash marks on his chest with the final one being more of a stab on his face. "I don't think we need Dr. Wick for help on determining the cause of death for this one." Sibyl said as she frown at the state of the body.

Around body she saw blood stain punch cards made of camphorated cellulose scattered throughout the floor. "What was he doing with those punch cards?" Sibyl reach down and took one of the bloodstain cards. "We think he was trying to steal them. No doubt to sell them in the black market. Who knows what sort of trouble a clacker would have caused if these fell onto their hands." Sibyl heard Arthur said. "Well I doubt any clacker can work with those cards. If the blood didn't ruin them then the cuts on them sure has." Dickenwright uttered as he shone his lantern at the cards.

Sibyl can see that the bottom portion was cut by a blade, no doubt the cards were damaged during the attack. "You think those luddites from Evergreen did this?" One officer said. Arthur mused on the question. "Destroying Analytical Engines and Kinotropes is something I can see them doing and attacking a man to destroy the punch cards is well within reason for them. But they rarely engage in murder and a violent once as this."

Sibyl agreed as she doubt he was murdered just for the punch cards alone. Once more she felt the odd magical vibrations coming from his wounds. "I think Wick is still needed. I'm feeling an odd magical presence from his cuts. In Fact magic is rather heavy in this room. Our killer is a sorcerer." Sibyl stated.

"The man should be arriving soon." Sibyl was still inspecting the body, finding an odd smudge on the man's fingers. Lifting it up she found that under the dim light the black smudge seem to produce a bluish hue.

As the detective look at the fingers she heard the door open from downstairs and someone walking up, the sickly and ragged form of Wick coming from the dark. The dark bags under his eyes, the oily black hair, and pale chalk skin mixed with his thin and skeletal frame sometimes made Sibyl think that the human before her was one of the undead instead of a living human. As he covered his hand with a handkerchief to cover his cough he looked at the body, putting it away as he began to open his bag.

As the man began to check on the body Sibyl got down to check more on the area, to find anymore clues on what occurred during the murder and possible answers to lead her forward on her case. Outside the property police officers stand outside the iron fences with steam gurneys parked and clockwork automatons and golems patrolling along with normal cops.

Ana Asakku | Slums

"I don't... I don't know what I'm looking at here. What is it?"

Ana shrugged. Nothing like a little ambiguity to start a negotiation, right? The curator's office was damp and musty, as well as only an "office" in name. It was a canvas stall, with rickety wooden legs holding up a sheet of tanned leather. A number of odd trinkets were arrayed out in front of the stall, from clockwork artifacts to... well, whatever the hell Ana had brought in today.

"Look. Here's the deal. You bring me things I can sell, and I buy them off you. Whatever this is, is not saleable. I'd probably have to pay someone else just to take it off my hands! Wh- what's this thing here? Is it a tongue, or a quill, or what?"

The curator held up a jagged furred cable, long red bristles emerging from a shrivelled, limp stick within the mass.

"Seriously! Do you even know what this is? Where did you find it? Was it in a sewer somewhere, or- or- just... fuck it. Three biscuits. Final offer."
"Pleasure doing business with you."

The man slid a number of hardened crackers over the table, pawing them into Ana's scarred hand. He looked rather confused by the revolting mass before him, with pulsating nodules on one end and glowing fibres on the other. Had it been alive at some point? Was it alive at all? Frankly, it was worthless. But, he could cut it into pieces; create a number of more specific, more valuable chunks out of the whole. It was the only thing he could do, pawning off unidentifiable trash to people who actually had a use for it. This strange girl, the... creature with a disquieting appearance, was one of his more prolific suppliers. Mostly, she brought in weird trash. Dead animals, alchemical experiments, sewer-refuse, literal dog shit... but at least he only had to pay her in biscuits. She loved her biscuits. Christ, look at her go, chowing down on that... no-longer-a-biscuit.

"So... are you going to leave now? Or have you got something else?"
"What? Oh, yeah. Sure."

Ana finished obliterating her crackers (they were really good crackers) and packed up her stuff. Well, she said "stuff". What she really meant was a tattered sack covered in questionable stains, and a basket full of more mundane goods. Fruit, vegetables, bread and such. The marketplace was a real bizarre bazaar in the slums. People sold whatever they could. Want a bottle of champagne? That'll cost you twenty years of your life. Bread for sale! Only two dead rats per loaf! Would anybody like some rocks? The exchange rate of rocks and sticks is particularly good today. Would anyone like to buy a literal child? It's for sale, in exchange for a metaphorical child, or two hypothetical children. Weird magical sales like that really ran rampant in these parts of the city, especially during these particular weeks. Every year, at around about the same time, all the local gangs and cults would get together and beat the tar out of one another, creating an enormous number of magical artifacts; most of which were taken from their original owners as soon as they died, and passed around the slums like hot potatoes - eventually finding their way into the hands of someone who actually knew how to use them. Another, more obvious side effect, was that murders also happened. A lot.

Oh wow. Look at all that murder. You could... fill a bucket, with that much murder.

Ana wandered the marketplace, looking for what she needed. What would she eat tonight? Mushrooms and entrails? No, she wasn't that rich. Bread and more bread? That sounded more like it. The majority of lower class citizens subsided on a diet of vermin-based protein and baked goods, as well as the occasional turnip or gram of butter. Thankfully, Ana was one of the richer vagrants. This neighbourhood was essentially the rich part of the slums, where instead of eating bread, bread and bread, people could sometimes get their hands on literally any source of calories besides bread. Fuck, that's a lot of bread. That joke's old. I'm going to stop making it.

Despite the stares she got while doing so, Ana liked to wander the city. There was just so much to see, smell and do! The narrow, shifting passageways were her home. She'd known them her entire life, been among them for as long as she could remember. And as she brokered deals, filled her basket with greens and reds, looked up at the sky and generally followed her evening routine, the sky began to weep. Rain began to pour, and she began to smile, tapping her foot to an inaudible, ethereal beat. The Secant's pulse, buried deep inside her heart. Screw making it home in time; she was going to have some fun. Ana wrapped her goods in her frayed bag and... well... she walked.

She walked and watched, listening to the drizzle and patter, smelling the shit and flowers; and all was well in her little world.

Lumina

The mixture of cigarette smoke and fireplace vapour rendered the office of Chief Minister Hector Helmeni something like a cross between a bathhouse and a sauna with a broken ventilation system. With six men crowded inside, all of whom were smoking heavily and sipping away at potent absinthe cocktails weakened only by blocks of ice, what was actually a regular meeting to discuss the governance of Lumina felt more like a slow suicide room of sorts.

Hector Helmeni himself seemed to bear the most immunity to the smoke and the alcohol. 59 years old, he was a gigantic mountain of a man with a neck as thick as a volcano and a bushy handlebar moustache that, impressively, drew more attention than the numerous medals and aiguillette ropes dangling from his gorilla chest.

For six years, Helmeni had served as the 29th Chief Minister of Lumina, succeeding the demented and senile Zechariah Darst, who had clung on to the position for two agonising years despite his failing health, dying in that same office room at the age of 73 years old. Helmeni, who had just turned 53 when he succeeded Darst, was the youngest Chief Minister in 200 years, and quickly proved himself to be, through political skill, a sharp mind for economic planning, and sheer, ruthless, administrative zeal, one of the most capable Chief Ministers Lumina had seen.

The White Plague in the nearby Zirag Empire was to be the first major crisis over which Helmeni would manage the city.

"Our ambassadors in Magwel report that at least five hundred people have already succumbed to the disease", explained one of the other five men in the room, appearing to be significantly more sickly than the mountainous Helmeni despite being a decade younger. "At the moment, the plague is contained within Xihanul Province. However, due to Xihanul's proximity to our outer border, it is entirely likely that traces of the disease may pass through-"

"Waldheim has sealed off the borders of Xihanul", interrupted another of the five men.

"He has sealed the borders off because he does not understand how the plague spreads", Helmeni replied, taking a shot of absinthe. "The disease spreads through water. Locking the province down will not stop the disease, because there are six rivers passing through, two of which cut into Lumina."

The Chief Minister stood up, went one round refilling everybody's glasses, and then took a seat again.

"Sooner or later, it's bound to come here", he continued, sitting back down in his leather armchair. "Whether or not Emperor Waldheim seals off Xihanul is irrelevant. Sooner or later, he will understand it, as we do. So will the Grand Chamber of Davlars. In the most unpleasant of manners-“

“You’re being watched by the higher ups, Hector Helmeni”, said one of the other five, ominously. “You were elected to this post to create fresh young blood into Lumina’s leadership. You’ve done well thus far, but as of late, you have yet to truly prove yourself. Your nineteen years in the military are over. You are now Chief Minister of Lumina. Your duty shall be to make sure our city remains unmolested by the White Plague, whatever the cost.”

...

Prince Ilgr zu Rugnis of the Ziragi Empire turned 19 on the day that he discovered his older sister Mune asuli Rugnis could no longer walk. As with many times before, the tomboyish Mune, four years older than he was, who commanded an infantry battalion, had stopped over at the castle in which he lived to resupply.

It was a regular occurrence, and the fact that it was so gave Ilgr a chance to bond with one of his siblings; consequently, while he hardly knew any of his other siblings due to his father’s orders that they all grow up separately, his older sister Mune had become his closest friend.

The last six or seven times she came, however, Ilgr noticed something; she no longer dismounted from her horse. It wasn’t long before he learned the reason for that.

“Mother’s disease”, she had finally explained to him that night, as the two siblings sat inside the commander’s tent, inside the military encampment just outside Dort Zahaschur Castle, where Ilgr had grown up his whole life. Out of the view of her blissfully unaware men, Princess Mune had dismounted from her horse with significant effort and hobbled into the tent and onto her bed, assisted by two retainers, barely able to stand on her own without her withered legs, hidden under her trousers, trembled violently. “It’s manifested itself in me like this. Soon... I shall be invalid, on the bed... locked inside my own body.”

The sight of his once energetic and sprightly sister now withered halfway to a vegetative state, a sharp mind in a dying body, clawed endlessly at 21-year-old Prince Ilgr’s mind, even as he, accompanied by the one man whom he knew best, entered the citadel of Lumina, the great entrepôt and affluent centre of Vim trade.

“They didn’t recognise us”, Ilgr exclaimed, in surprise, to his old, one-eyed retainer.

“The disguises must be effective, then”, the old retainer bluntly replied.

The two quietly went down the streets, taking care not to stare too long in any direction. Both knew all too well that there was bound to be someone, somewhere, who would recognise something wasn’t right with the supposed travellers travelling under false names.

“Asta Laswald” and “Daird Elthe”, as they had called themselves (taking on Luminati pseudonyms upon entering the cosmopolitan city-state), were on an assignment, decided upon by the former of the two. Official documentation upon their entry from Xihanul stated that both were merely entering the city to do business, but in reality, Prince Ilgr of the Rugnis and his retainer Sergeant-major Mihail Kaen were seeking specifically a cure for the White Plague that had mysteriously manifested itself in Xihanul, barely days ago.

It was a task nigh impossible, considering close to nothing was known about the disease save for the fact that it was carried by water (and even then, there was disagreement among the physicians of Ziragi Emperor Waldheim III’s court). Legends told of rare, almost mythical herbs growing in the northernmost regions of the world, guarded by martial arts sects and dragons and other fantastical entities of the sort. Even if there was a medicine to the disease, finding it was another matter entirely.

There was, however, at least one person who was willing to try. Even if he had no idea how exactly to do so.

"We'll have to find people to join us."

Malius walked back to the small apartment that he rented and set the money on a table when he heard a knock at his door. He pulled out a dagger and opened the door a crack. "Yes? What is it?" Malius said. "It is time to pay rent, so pay up." It was his landlord, Ivanov. Malius smiled under his mask and pulled the dagger up to Ivanov's throat, saying "Ah come on, Ivanov. We're friends, remember? Friends don't need to pay rent." Ivanov put on a scared smile and nervously said "Yes, yes, how silly of me. No need to pay rent." Malius smiled under his mask again and closed the door. "Now that that's done with, I wonder if the police would accept a bribe. Not that I'll need to bribe them, but just in case." He then grabbed some of the money and put it in his pocket and took his mask off to eat.

Cadia

The Domus Inquisitionis was a stunning building. Modeled on the High Cadian architecture of over two thousand years ago, the structure dominated the skyline of Cadia. Only the Palace of the Manga Pontifex, the largest structure for worship in the entire world, was a more impressive building. Within the hallowed chambers and rooms was where the Ordo Inquisito worked to combat heresy and protect the Ecclesiarchy from threats internal and external.

Venusta Navi, an ordained Sacredos, prostrated herself before the Generalis Inquisitor himself, second only to the Manga Pontifex when it came to prestige and authority in the Ecclesiarchy. In the past many Generalis Inquisitors became the Manga Pontifex, but for two hundred years the current occupant refused election for a very simple reason: he was an elf.

Instead, he dedicated his long and nearly immortal life to the eradication of heresy and the protection of the Ecclesiarchy. All seemed well until the Vim Revolution changed everything and now the Ecclesiarchy, a symbol of immovable tradition, had to contend with a rapidly changing world.

"Arise, Sister Venusta," the elf said gently. The young woman sat upright and kept her head bowed.

"Your investigation and handling of the Duke D'Orsino case has produced great results," he informed her. "The Duke has renounced his past ways, and with his connexions we have been able to find and root out numerous drug rings within Cadia's holy walls. We expect by the end of the year the worst of this long nightmare will be over."

Venusta remained silent. She knew her superior did not give praise lightly. No, she expected what was to come.

"The Duke has also been so kind as to provide us with where the supply of Vim-based narcotics came from. Unsurprisingly, the source is Lumina. You are to be sent there post haste."

Lumina

Hector Helmeni kept a stoic expression on his face as he looked at the five men before him, the same men whose connection to the high powers that rule Lumina can quickly take away his position of power as easily as they have given it to him. "Do not worry gentlemen, I will do everything in my power to ensure the White Plague will never reach our borders. As we speak I already have a committee made to find solutions to our immediate problem. I also have our armed forces and police force on standby should we require their services to prevent infected refugees from enter the city. Our hospitals and clinics are already warn of the White Plague and all staff members of the facility are in the look out for anyone showing symptoms of the plague to quarantine them before it can spread."

With his speech done the Chief Minister awaited for the others to speak. Hector was aware that another issue plaguing the city was the series of murders aimed at factory workers working for the various companies that make up the Vim Consortium, powerful conglomerates who play a major role in the various Vim based industries and who make most of the Vim based products, their wealth and power having a large influence over the economy of Lumina. The death of those workers was a clear sign of someone sending threats to the Consortium and with them being so tied to Lumina it was also an indirect threat to the city.

But right now the matter of the plague was of grave concerns sense while one mad man with connections to luddite conspirators was something he will have to deal with eventually the damage they can infect will mean nothing of everyone in the city was dying from the plague.

As the prince of the Ziragi Empire and his loyal retainer walked through the dark and rainy streets, the glow of Vash powered lamps illuminating the streets, just as above the lights of airships and skyscrapers brought some light to the darken skies. They can smell both wet soil from the few patches of greenery grown in the city to give it a natural and pleasing aesthetic to hide the cold and industrial nature of the city. Yet some of the trees and flowers growing on small gardens show signs of either dying from the smog produced by the steam engines or mutated by Vim energy that hangs in the air like the smog itself.

The two would hear music being played by automatic orchestra machines, its inventor drawing a crowd who marveled at the fantastical device with some paying him to play new songs. An unseen arcane field kept the rain from touching the machine as it continue to play music to the delight of the crowd. They saw cooks on stalls calling for buyers to treat out their delicious meals and merchants wanting people to buy their wears. They even found salesman offering people Vim infusions and implants, promising to grant supernatural powers to ordinary mortals for a high monetary price.

The steam gurneys and wagons moved by along with drawn carriages and rickshaw, the whistle of electric power trolleys and trams at the center of the road could be heard as they altered all of their presence. The two found stairs leading both to underground subway tunnels and elevated railroads. There were even found ships going through the canals made in the city.

Of the rows of buildings made of wood and stone, reinforced concrete and steel, some surrounded by wrought iron fences, the two would see both natural and artificial workers constructing new buildings in a timely manner, mainly in them making it as both quickly and cheaply as possible. The two saw cranes being used for much larger buildings.

On top of some buildings they can see billboards, sheets of Vuk enhanced glass protecting the wooden pixel blocks of kinotropes as they change to show an advert for a company selling automatic, engine powered, pianos. Other ads were for other items such as foods, furniture, clothing, and even one advertising for an airship cruise for wealth families and individuals to take. Ironically some of the ads were for umbrellas and clothing made to deal with the rain.

From the crowd the two barely stood out, as many groups of humans and many other races throughout the known world walked on the city streets.

Walker
Lumina

Stepping out from a car was a strange being. A coat hung over the otherwise odd form, a small concession to the fact that even a machine needs pockets. Blue looked on the scene, what few police that were there being somewhat nervous. They were marked by little movements, by eyes that did not totally trust one whose eyes they could not exactly meet. Seeing someone’s eyes was something a person might feel could bring trust, that little glimmer that helped the gut decide the person could keep secrets. Walker lacked that, simply, and while it bothered him not at all one bit it did affect his coworkers. A few long strides through a puddle, metal clanking against cobblestone, and he was there.

“Walker,” muttered one, lowering his head just a bit in a brief nod, his hands shoved in the pockets. “Helluva scene today. Someone went to town. Got four dead, one with his head smashed-in. Credentials on them point to workers for a company not too far here. All the same company, too.”

“Not your regular troll attack then,” came Walker’s reply. His voice didn’t come from the head, either, something that just seemed to emanate in the air around him. It wasn’t a deep voice, nor one that was especially clipped by one accent or another. It lacked inflexion, lacked tone, lacked a humorous raise at the end or anything to denote a question. It was just a statement, and a true one at that. Bloody rampages were one thing. Calculated killings against a corporation, that was most certainly another. The attacks sounded brutal, overly so, but not undue. His hands shoved into the pockets, the robot strode forward, taking little time.

Passive gem viewed each of them, sensing for magical influence. Walker felt it, and it felt wrong. It felt tainted, destructive and destroying itself too, and though the mechanicus did not repulse he did not enjoy it. A grinding noise, the sound an engine might make if lubricant wasn’t provided, came from Walker, the being backing-up briefly. They came fast, the attacks rapid and coordinated. One person might have managed it, though doubtful. It wasn’t a bunch of clean murders, that was for sure. Best to wait for the coroner for a better sense of what, exactly, killed them. And so, motionless, Walker waited.

Sibyl thanked her mother for inheriting her elven genes as she searched through the wet soil for any clues not washed away by the rain. The wilted weeds told the detective that the soil was poor for growing anything regardless on how much rain galle on it. Yet the previously arid soil was now a muddy mess that made her job difficult.

As Sibyl wade through the muck she would find nothing. Disappointed she began to walk away from the backyard. When she began to walk she stopped, her ears picking up slight movement. She didn't turn quickly to face she was behind her but she did turn slowly to see what was the source of the noise.

With Walker he would see Dr. Wick walking towards him. "Inspector Walker." He greeted, his attempt at being polite tarnished due to his tired and sickly form. "You are lucky to have come in time, I was just finish my work. The victim was killed by a stab to the head. Oddly the victim suffered from a withered leg, still need to do more studies on that." The doctor said before yawning.

"I detected a strange form of magic on the victim, no not just magic. I sensed something was off with the victimless nature of those under his bloodlust. I think they are practicing some strange form of magic or they are using it artificial forms of vim. I just know that the weapon from the shape of the wounds is not your typical on attacking, these might be using magic to assist them."

“Doctor. Detective,” came the Inspector’s response, tilting his head in a nod. The man was tired enough to not really care on most forms of decorum, nor care for most forms of annoying factors such as small talk. Good. Walker liked the brevity in that. It was strange that the good Doctor thought artificial vim was utilized, though such a thing could explain the strange...feelings? Readings. The strange readings Walker felt on the corpses. They weren’t normal corpses, that was for sure. A shiver, a strange thing for any sort of mechanicus to perform, ran down Walker’s back.

“Agreed. Corrupted signatures were noted. This murder was planned, organized, contemplated. The victims were of the same corporation.”

I shall find the perpetrator of these crimes and dispose of him. Where have these killings happened, and were there any witnesses?" Malius knew where the killings were happening, but he wanted to know that his client would have information that he could use.

Ana Asakku | Investigation Site

Melancholy rain. Far from it. The soothing pitter patter of raindrops against the stones, the dull and vivid splatter as they fell from slanted rooftiles. There was music in the air and the smell of mildew, mixed in with the familiar scent of cured woods and rot. The city's taste was sharp on her tongue; a familiar and comforting sensation, despite all its disgusting attributes. It was the sights, the smells, the sounds of home. And, it was what made her feel so surprised when she spotted and smelled a far less... typical posse of men and women in the street, their reflections hard against the watery cobbles. Behind a rusty iron fence, topped with fancy sharpened points, there was a band of police. Not the untrained, regularly outwitted and often criminally negligent police typical of these parts - oh no, these were trained and well armed investigators. And among them, a woman caught her eye. A half-elf, by the looks of it. She seemed a bit out of place, now didn't she?

The perimeter was guarded by a few bored officers, each tapping an iron baton against their shins as they walked. A shared nervous tic? Probably just something they'd picked up from the actions of a senior instructor. The majority didn't seem too worried. After all, a seedy place like this barely warranted any real attention. It was merely a photographer's den, "Photo Obscura" as they called it. The hiss of steam and the clank of bronze was probably comforting to them. They almost certainly relied too heavily on their budget, bringing in automatons to do the work for them. But machines like these were crude, predictable creations. Hardly worth the money invested. She vaulted over the fence cleanly and rolled into some bushes, her curiosity coming over her. She'd faced off against the law before, and honestly, she'd never been too worried for her own wellbeing. The Secant was always as powerful as she'd needed it to be, funnily enough. Even so, divine protection couldn't save her from everything. Spiders, for example. God, she hated spiders - as common as they were in these parts of town.

She clambered up the side of the building, the steep and wet bricks leaving little room for error. Her claws dug in quietly, tracing bits of mortar off the side of the wall and leaving long white stains on her fingers. She crept along the gutter, careful to remain in the shade of the overhang. The building was fairly rectangular, with barely any decorations. It wouldn't be hard to spot her, as long as someone looked up. She hovered over Sibyl as she stepped outside, watching from the dark as the woman conversed with a detective. Perhaps this was a murder case? The smell of blood certainly indicated so. She dropped into the brush and waited for them to enter, hoping that she could learn a little about the case. After all, these streets were her home - and she demanded to know what was happening on them. Hopefully not anything dastardly, she thought. That would just be completely unwarranted.

Lumina

"We have now entered Luminian airspace," the captain's voice echoed throughout the first-class area where Venusta sat reading the paper. The young woman, who spent her entire life on the Adra continent looked out of the window. The vast array of skyscrapers, other airships and aeroplanes, and smoke plumes were an impressive sight and a far cry from the ancient cities and gothic look of most of the old Cadian Empire.

Within the hour, the vast airship landed on top of one of the taller structures. Airship travel, though common, was somewhat rarer on Adra where trains connected most cities. This one came from Alba, where Venusta docked a few days before. After the ship clamped onto the tall spire, a set of stairs descended where Venusta and the other guests made their way to the "surface."

Venusta followed the line towards the customs office where dozens of bureaucrats processed the hundreds of visitors. The Ecclesiarch's agent removed her diplomatic passport, stamped with the official seal of the Cadian Curia, and handed it to the agent at the desk who put it through computing machine. After a few minutes, he handed the passport back to Venusta and she was now officially inside the city-state of Lumina.

Jules and Jona
"Please bite down on the stick, Mr. Saxecoburg. This won't take but thirty minutes." Julian Yamada had been examining the leg of a man mauled by a pack of feral dogs, and concluded that it was in such bad shape that he was better without it. It was a shame, but nothing a prosthetic couldn't help with. Being an amputee was better than being dead.

It really pained her to hear the distressed sounds of patients. It was hard for her to have to hurt them. Fortunately though, that one hour of surgery always seemed to be worth it-as far as she knew, none of her patients she operated on so far had any problems after their operations. So it was always worth it.

"Jona, wipe him down if he gets too sweaty. I'm terribly sorry we can't do anything more, but giving alcohol to a man your age could be risky. Your safety is my main concern." Jules laid his leg on a cushion and sterilized the area at his knee, or where his knee used to be.

Suffice it to say, after an agonizing half hour of having to listen to John Saxecoburg's muffled cries, Julian stitched up the wound at the place where she severed his lower limb.

"There you go." She carefully dressed the wound and made sure to disinfect it throughly. "You should rest for a few days. Change your bandages and wash your stitches regularly."

"Th-thank you, doctor....You saved my life." her patient shifted to sit on the cot she had provided for him. "But....I don't think I can pay you yet...."

"Oh don't worry about it! Just...consider yourself in my debt. That's it. You can pay me whenever you're ready." Julian gave him a reassuring smile and walked out of his room to see his family, flanked by her younger companion.

"Jules"

"Hm?"

"Would you stop that?"

"Stop what?"

"Just allowing patients to pay us sooner or later. It's the reason why you're not making as much as other doctors. Heck, it's the reason why we have to tighten our budget all the time."

"Well....what am I, a loan shark?" Jules sighed. "Listen, Jona...some people are just....they can't afford it right away without selling their house or something else valuable. If they pay me little by little however, I still get the money and they pay off their debt without self ruin. It's a win-win."

"I hate to tell you, you're a pushover."

"Quiet, we're meeting his family. Now, we need to make a good impression."

Sibyl strained her ears to hear out for anymore of the mysterious sound but the patter of the rain hitting on the cobblestone, cracking cement, and rotting wood and rusted iron, made it difficult for Sibyl to get a good mental picture of the exact location of what was near the crime scene. As she looked around she would eventually shag her stiff shoulders. "Must have been a stray animal." She said as she turn around and walked back into the building in the back door.

Sibyl saw the ruined state of the kitchen. Dirty dishes stacked on a sink, harden food stains covered by withering maggots and flies on the plates or flying over it. The sink was leaking drops on one of the plates and like the heater stove the one in the kitchen was also broken. Sibyl found an old ice box in the kitchen, the cabinet doors barely hanging on the hinges and the wood rotten to the point that it was a miracle it was still standing. Unlike modern ice boxes this one did not receive the Vim updates to improve it' refrigeration capabilities, meaning it needed to rely on a block of ice that has long since melted due to the subtropical climate of Lumina.

The half elf went through the hall and rooms and eventually stepped out of the building to see an automata talking with Wick. Sibyl looked at the machine awestucked. She had seen many automatas before but with Walker's design he was nothing like she saw at the city streets and factories, he looked like a walking antique made to represent the Age of High Enchantment, the age of old magic. Yet she saw from behind the coat he had modern parts as well, merging both the old world and new world.

The detective walked to the robot as Wick spoke. "I will send the bodies to the Ministry of Magick. Surely the sorcerers in there might give us some clues on what we are dealing with." The doctor saw Sibyl approaching. "Ms. Blackstone, I was telling detective Walker here my results." Hearing those words snapped Sibyl out of her awestruck daze and a cold and professional took its place. "So what did you find? Why is the magic so... wrong?" Wick could tell that for the woman her half elf ancestry can sense the arcane energy coming out of the bodies and feel it's unnerving presence gar more than anyone in the room.

"My best bet is that an artificial form of Vim was used, one that might have been seriously flawed when it was being made." Sibyl look incredulous at the doctor. "I've been around artificial Vim before doctor, even around ones that were flawed in their construction. None of them produced this feeling." The doctor nodded at her statement, never doubting her knowledge on how Vim works.

"Yes on most occasions even a flaw Vim shouldn't cause this much uneasy, but most artificial Vim are made by mixing natural Vim in an alchemical process to create new forms. This has always been the nature of artificial Vim but recently some have been working on making new forms of Vim by mixing Vim with synthetic materials and magic. Most of these experiments usual results in failure, some disastely so. But a few have succeeded in creating synthetic Vim. So it isn't impossible." The doctor explained to the two detectives.

Sibyl fold her arms in front of her chest as she heard what the doctor said and thought of the implications and viability of his theory working. "It is an interesting theory Wick, but it does have one problem. Most of those experiments were done in research labs own by universities, companies, or nations. There is also the fact that most of them aren't even used as their properties are still a mystery even to the scientists who made them. It would be extraordinarily risky for an individual or group to test the properties of a synthetic variant of Vim by murdering a few workers since for all they know it would make for a terrible weapon."

The doctor didn't seem to show any strong reaction to his theory being picked apart. If anything, he just took out his napkin and blew his nose. Breathing through his stuffy nose he replied back. "I know my theory isn't full proof but that is what I have at the moment. As for the weapon I believe we are dealing with a single edge, curved, bladed weapon. With the fact that some of our victims had their limbs severed I believe the murder weapon is a longsword."

Sibyl nodded at the idea. "That makes sense. One can easily conceal certain types of swords with either long coats or capes, which now gives is an idea what our killer may be wearing. But doctor there is another weapon that also fits your description. A scythe." Wick began to chuckle at what Sibyl told him which resulted in him coughing. "A scythe? Surely you are joking?" The detective gave the man a smirk. "Conveyance. With that arcane discipline one can manipulate motion and distance, warping the very fabric of space to create magical forms of transportation, defenses, and weapons, or in the cases of thieves unlocking doors and windows. One can use that to conjure an item from another location and send it back once their use for it is done."

Sibyl explained as she lower her arms to her sides, placing on hand on her hip. "They could have used a scythe to give themselves a longer reach when chasing down their target." Wick look unconvinced at the theory. "Them chasing a target shows one issue with the scythe theory detective. Scythes by their designs are both heavy and unwieldy weapons. If they tried to kill anyone in doors they would have to worry about hitting the ceiling or walls. I don't think anyone would fuse over something like that when a sword is much more efficient."

Sibyl wasn't surprised that Wick would doubt her theory, even she herself thinks it is properstois. But she had a gut feeling that this theory was correct on some level. "Besides the bodies there us a bar with a deep cut on it. The shape of the cut could have been made by either of our weapon. Regardless the fact the weapon itself is Vim or magic powered means that luddite groups like Evergreen or radical religious groups like the Templars aren't responsible for this, their ideology won't allow them to experiment in making experimental Vim enchanted weapons."

The gnome looked at the mask, hiding his revulsion and fear behind a sneer, to show a strong mask of confidence to the killer standing before him. "Right now they have been in onevof the slums. I believe most call it "Blighttown". The companies like picking out new workers from there as most are desperate enough to do anything for food and money. So far no witnesses have been found, either our preparator is clever enough to plan out their attacks to minimize the chances of being spotted or they silence them as well and despise of their bodies, leaving the workers to be found to leave a clear message to the companies and state how they feel about these times." Franklin explained

"The police have already swarm on one of the murder sites. I've heard that with them is an Alban half elf woman who they call in as a "detective consultant" and the other is an automata who is an old relic from the age of high enchantment that was not only retrofitted with modern technology but even fought for legal rights to be a citizen. If I can be blunt in saying this I believe those two misfits have no place working with this city's fine police force. Solving crimes is neither the job of a woman or a relic."

As Venusta began to walk out of the customs office she would see a tall elf wearing a fancy suit and long coat waiting for her. The man's pricing amber yellow eyes looked down at the comparatively smaller woman's blue. The elf was born with the rare gene that made what would have normally been his lighter hair into one that was coal black.

"Welcome to Lumina, Ms. Venusta. I am Alvis, and I will be your guide." The man spoke in an accent that Venusta would have never heard of anywhere in the world. The accent Alvis has was one of the many new ones made due to Lumina's cosmopolitan nature. Yet she can pick up traces of Qintarra which fits as it was the most populous elven city in Numina.

"Let's go ma'am, we shouldn't keep our driver waiting for to long." Alvis said as he began to lead the woman do to the elevator. When they approached the elevators Venusta would see rows of wooden brown rooms with gray metal benches with green cushions on the seats and back, the room was blocked by a metal wall iron bars, standing at the side was a staff working for the building. Alvis walked forward and the worker took out a key and used it to unlock the locking mechanism keeping the sliding door in place. The worker rose the sliding door up and and allowed Venusta and Alvis to enter enter the caged door held in place. Once inside the driver enter in as well and pulled the door down. The man pulled down a lever and the metal room shock slightly before going down, the echo of machinery from above can be heard turning.

Once they reached the lobby they quickly came outside, Alvis shielding both of them with his umbrella. Venusta would see a black steam carriage with yellow linings and a red base waiting for the two. Alvis walked to the door and open it for the woman. Once the two were on the carriage the vehicle moved forward to their destination.

As they passed through the sights of the inhabitants going through their daily lives the elf asked the inquisitor a question. “If you don't mind me asking what reason do you have for this visit?” the stern looking elf asked.

As Catherine came out of the multiple warps, she was now on top of one of the roofs of the building. It was the one where she had previously ended the 2 workers for their sins. As she slowly looked down, she saw some officers now on the scene as they looked through it. She stopped for a moment as she heard someone coming close to her. As the footsteps slowly intensified, she felt a change in the air. "Catherine." Catherine closed her eyes for a moment as she gripped her spear. "We both know you're stuck here, and I don't like doing this either but listen for once." She turned around to greet the woman speaking to her.

She stood at a height of roughly 1.6 meters, nothing out of the ordinary but with her sharpened black stilettos that appeared to be combined with combat boots this gave her a good extra 3 centimeters of lift. With each step as she got closer from calling out to Catherine to now moving towards her, her ankle length black and white frilled skirt slightly swayed with each movement of her hips. Her attire could be described as that of a servant in some posh mansion, although the corset that was common was in reality a form of armor against Catherine, containing light amounts of enchantment. As the wind slowly picked up, Catherine could now see her face beyond the pale white hair that covered her face for a moment. Red eyes, delicate features, a more menacing appearance as compared to herself. This was definitely the woman in charge of her, The Herrscher.

"High command has a new job and-"

"Can't you do it yourself." Catherine shot back, as she sighed.

"You know that the High Order wants you specifically on the case. Now here's your next target. They've been a bother to us, a detective from the precinct that works in these regions. They're close to breaking the cases, make sure they stay silent. Besides, I already have another target and another for you once you're done. Finish the job soon by tonight, and make sure to return back and report to us. Now, get to work, and I bid you farewell." As the Herrscher bowed, she held onto her spear and lept over to the next roof, heading over to her next target. Catherine stood there reading through the file. Her name was Sibyl Blackstone. As she read through the file the order had on her. She closed it before promptly tearing it apart. Looks like she'll be busy tonight. Spinning the scythe once by her side, she warped over to the next roof as she continued onwards. Onto her next bait for her prey.

God had no right to forsake these humans while leaving his messengers behind. As repentance and to mourn, the Divine Judge raises her spear to the sky and screams an eternal vow to continue her duty for eternity

Malius nodded and said "Very well, I'll start in Blighttown. The killer's most likely to either be an effective assassin or a serial killer. Either way, when this is done your client pay's my fee." And with that, he shut the door and grabbed his knives before walking over to a second door leading outside, opened it, and stepped out. He then walked out into the crowded streets of the slums and began heading towards Blighttown. Eventually he made it there and decided to go to the small pub in the area to find any clues to the killings. He opened the moldy, wooden door and shut it with a bang. One patron got up to most likely fight Malius, but upon seeing the mask and knives sat back down. Malius walked up to the barkeeper and said "I'll let you live and give you enough cash to quiet you up if you tell me of anyone here in BLighttown besides me who would most likely kill factory workers."

The bartender, a half orc, just gave Maluis an annoyed look. "Most likely one of the gangs in here like the Boils or Razer Hands. Hell I heard a few of the organized crooks like the Sand Men who are killing them to take whatever infusion and implants they have. Hell it could be Evergreen, everyone thinks it's them." The bartender said as he cleaned his glass.

"Word on the street is though is that the person who is doing in the factory workers is a mage because they all had signs of being cursed before they died. Not really surprised, any mage with questionable morals comes here to prefer their experiments in secret since most people don't care what happens in here so long as we don't cause too much trouble to send in the police or army."

Venusta

Venusta raised an eyebrow at the elf but did not protest as he introduced himself to her and gestured towards the elevator. She merely gave him a polite nod and followed Alvis through the Customs Office. Venusta took in some of the interior design of the building but kept her focus on the task at end. Alvis was, after all, from his appearance and bearing a government worker and so she had little reason to suspect anything suspicious, but her training kept her on alert at all times.

As the pair exited the structure and reached the streets of Lumina, Venusta spoke for the first time since arriving.

"I am here on Curia business, to meet with the local Pontiff," she explained, her Cadian accent coming perfectly through despite her perfect command of the Alban language.

Blighttown
After a few hours of coaxing the old man's wife and reassuring the rest of the family that he was going to be fine and he would be able to be employed still, albeit restricted to mostly manual jobs without heavy lifting, Jules did manage to leave with a small sum of cash, enough to buy food and maybe lodging for the night. Jona sported a sour mood as they left, but it lifted a bit as he saw the family gathered around their patient, happy that he would be recovering.

"How long is he gonna last? It's not the cleanest place here. What if his stitches get infected?"

"Well....at least.....I mean, longer than if we didn't operate on him. I left dressings and supplies with them and instructions, so they do have the means of keeping his wound clean." Julian gave him an uneasy smile. "Let's get food."

They strolled along the cluttered and dimly-lit streets. Jona seemed more alert than Julian as they passed haggard, homeless men on the sidewalk and other seedy pedestrians-some with knives or other melee weapons by their sides. Jona took care to not make eye contact with them, and walked faster to keep up with Julian. He didn't want to get lost here.

It took them some time to find a decent restaurant that wasn't jam packed or serving morsels whose edibility was questionable. Jona felt his feet going sore below him, and he was well prepared to just sit down and go without dinner for the night (again). Fortunately, just as Jona felt like giving up, they came upon a small bar. It looked well-lit, not tood crowded, and had some semblance of legitimacy.

Jules ushered her companion into the bar and sat up at the counter. "So...you guys got any specials today?" Jules asked the bartender.

"I see." Alvis said as the carriage stopped due to a trolly going through the road. "I believe the closet church is close by. I shall take you there before dropping you off to the hotel registered for you." The elf said as he gave the new directions to the driver. "I have to say, I prefer the current pontiff over the previous one. That man was too stubborn for his own good. At least this one is willing to make compromises. " The elf said.

Eventually they would reach the church, which really resembled a cathedral more than a simple church. "Do you wish for me to accompany you Ms. Venusta?" He asked as he open the door, stepping out to shield her from the rain with his umbrella.

The half orc looked at Jules, giving her a grin. "You're sure you can handle our special little lady? Thersamillian alcohol are much more potent and of a higher quality than any of that Ziragian or Alban crap you probably drink. But if you insist than sure, but I won't be held responsible for what you do if you get drunk." The half orc went to the cabinet and pulled out a bottle written in Orcish. He poured the contents on a glass mug and have it to Jules. "Here you go girly, the best stuff made back in my home country."

Malius looked at the newcomer in the bar and then turned to the half-orc, saying "Well thanks for the info. Here." He handed the half-orc the money he had in his pocket to bribe any police officers and left. He then decided to try and find some local illegal mages and see if any of them would be willing to sell out their comrades for some "protection".
